I was initially drawn to the impressive dollhouse, but there are also so many other cool paintings, sculptures, and photographs here. The museum building itself is very bright and welcoming. Check out the courtyard, too, where there were some lawn games over the summer. We also explored the education center, which seems to have an ongoing activities for kids. Next time I visit, I'll check out the planetarium! read more

Mark Twain called the late 19th century the "Gilded Age." It saw the creation of a modern industrial economy, a national transportation and communication network. In the HBO drama "The Gilded Age," the characters are keenly aware that they live in interesting times, and this establishment was featured as Mrs. Astor's home. Built for millionaire banker John Bond Trevor and his family, Glenview Mansion has been painstakingly restored by the Hudson River Museum, which is a hidden gem located in Yonkers. Guided tours are offered to six fully restored rooms (Great Hall, Sitting Room, Parlor, Dining Room, Ebony Library, and Billiard Room), which my partner and I had the pleasure of today at $20 per adult and can be purchased on their website. Since his primary residence was in NYC, this 19th-century seasonal home was used from April to December each year and sits on a 23-acre estate. The owner commuted into his office on Wall Street in New York City, about 23 miles away. Upon entering the mansion, it showcases late Victorian with the colorful tiles on the floor, the high ceilings, and the furniture and fixtures such as the Tiffany and Co. grandfather clock, a Victorian recliner chair, or the storybook tiles over the fireplace in the Great Hallway. The original home featured a wraparound balcony that could be accessed through the Sitting Room, but it was later removed in order to lower maintenance costs. Besides the mansion, the museum is a complex of galleries that present changing art exhibitions, a permanent Hudson River School collection, a planetarium, an amphitheater, and educational spaces for all ages. The staff was friendly. The interior was very well kept and organized. With great views of the Hudson River, this is a relatively short day trip, which we can recommend. read more

Nice museum, kind of pricy for the size. As a family visiting with a young child we really liked the scavenger hunt & interactive exhibits. My son enjoyed the reading corner. Wish they had more for children available. Staff were very friendly. We even bumped into Ben Stiller on our walk around the exhibits, didn't have the courage to say hello. But it was a cool to see him there :) read more

I came to the Hudson River Museum to visit the Planetarium for the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Purchasing the ticket online was easy and checking in at the front desk for the armband was smooth. Given I had about forty five minutes until the immersive show, I stopped by their smart gift shop and viewed their collections of art, which, for a museum unknown to me before, has an impressive number and variation of art covering the 19th and 20th centuries. They have a new collection of local artists and another collection featuring African American, African, and Afro British artists' works. A number of installation works are featured throughout the museum with one room dedicated to a massive installation work of a bookshop. The Planetarium show of Dark Side of the Moon was truly immersive. Some seats are better than others, but the show was excellent. The graphics could have been better, given the state of the art of technology, but the experience was immersive and a person could find themselves dizzy from the imagery and dynamic movements surrounding you. The sound system is quite good too and was up to the task for that album; though, I was concerned during the preliminary time to allow people to seat themselves, that the bass and sub bass drivers could not handle it. Exiting the show allowed me more time to see the courtyard where a wedding was about to take place. The grounds are beautiful and the setting for this museum along the Hudson River is impressive. The museum is centered around the house of a man who made his money on the stock market. The house was built in the 1870s and was acquired in the 1960s. New additions to the museum are still underway. It would be worthwhile to see all the grounds, given the original owner had an interest in horticulture. Who knew all this was here... I am so happy we got a membership for the HRM! Now that we have begun homeschooling our little, we've been searching for field trip ideas and places we can take her for culture and supplemental education. The membership was worth it for us because we can use it for our family as well as other guests we might bring with us. It literally paid for itself in two visits to the attached planetarium. The planetarium is great. They change the shows all the time and some of them are tailored for our child's age. The host allows questions after the viewings and you're able to walk around the gallery before and after the planetarium shows. With the membership, you can visit as much as you want, all year long. The month we began visiting, they had a Frida Kahlo exhibit. The World Of Frida exhibit was operating until May 22, 2022. They also have days when they host events like the Fiesta de Frida: A Festival from Frida Kahlo's Cookbook, when they opened up their courtyard to visitors and had a number of vendors giving out free samples of recipes based on one of the cookbook's chapters. Although it was a windy and chilly day, there was a great turn-out and tons of adults and kids, enjoying music by DJ Apache. It was the first time out tot got to try chicharrones de harina and she loved them. The museum also hosts different family workshops where visitors can try their hand at making art they can take home. We have yet to try one as we have not had the opportunity to sit in on one that out tot would enjoy. I am sure they have had plenty but we never visited during one of those times or were not able to stay and attend. It seems that the 1230pm planetarium shows are geared more towards smaller children, under 10. The 2pm shows are more for older kids and adults, as are the 330pm shows. Having the membership means that you could ideally spend the entire day at the museum, visiting the exhibits, taking a tour of the Glenview home, relaxing in the courtyard, enjoying the workshops and watching every planetarium show they offer for the day. The membership also comes with opportunities to attend their fundraising galas and other invite-only events. We have yet to go to any but have recently been invited to purchase tickets to the upcoming fundraiser. This museum is an asset to this community. It's location has one of the most beautiful Hudson views and it offers so much culture to all of its neighbors. I wish we took advantage of it when we were still located in Yonkers. Despite moving away, HRM will be a staple to our family in regards to future family fundays. read more

A lot of middling contemporary art and no history of river at all. Also, the security guards were so mean! I saw one make a little girl cry when she yelled at her for her bottle of water. River model not open so maybe that was good? No views of river as shades closed to protect bad contemporary art. Pass! read more

This small museum is such a gem. It's a combination science and art museum located right on the Hudson River. I wasn't able to tour the historic house (keep in mind you need to book a tour to see it) but apparently it was featured on HBOs Gilded Age. The museum dates back to 1919 and has a good permanent collection at least judging from the selections they had on display when I went. The Red Grooms' The Bookstore art installation was particularly impressive. I did take in a planetarium show which was wonderful. The presenter was very knowledgeable and the show was informative and involved a lot of animations. I highly recommend this place for both families and adult art lovers. read more

First time here. My husband and I had the Ding Ding Chicken and it was Absolutely delicious!! No tables but they have bar stools in front of the windows. Makes for great people watching!! We will be back and definitely come for takeout as well. Staff is delightful too. A great find! read more

While my photos focus on the African American artist exhibit, this small museum has a lot to offer. Not only did they put on an EXCELLENT collection of African American/black art, but they had multiple other styles of art as well. Additionally, they have a planetarium, a tour of a classic house, and a section on the ecology of the Hudson River. Please note some of these were closed due to the pandemic. Ticket for an adult is only 8 dollars and there's on site parking, so I would say definitely worth it! read more

I spotted Glenview along Warburton Avenue as I approached, but trying to find the entrance, which doesn't come until further down past the parking lot, would not have happened had I not had GPS to guide me. First-time visitors may want to be aware of this. The parking lot is small. HRM is a nice little museum. I came for a tour of Glenview as I love visiting Gilded Age homes. I do not watch the HBO series, but apparently it has been filmed here. Glenview was my favorite part of the museum, and my favorite room was the Great Hall and its glorious staircase. It was a shame the tour was limited to just the first floor and that we could not see the kitchen or the billiard room. But I enjoyed what I did get to see. The price of the tour also includes admission to the rest of the museum. The rest of the museum has a planetarium, a learning space for kids, an amphitheater (open in good weather), and some galleries housing a mix of traditional and contemporary works, with rotating exhibits (and a great view of the Hudson River). What is displayed permanently is a collection of paintings from the Hudson River School, which I always enjoy viewing and have seen represented at other museums. HRM is a hidden gem that you'll want to be sure to visit any time you're hankering for a one-day excursion. Take the kids. Take your friends. Take yourself. You'll be glad you did. read more

It was the first time we went to this museum for their Lunar New Year celebration and it was awesome! It had lion troupe performance, Korean dance and some other traditional cultural dance. The museum itself wasn't that big, but I liked their exhibits. The description for the exhibits were very informative and easy to understand. It was not a bad choice to spend a few hours at the museum at all. The museum parking lot was relatively small and it wasn't easy to find parking nearby once the parking lot was full. The staff at the museum was very friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Came on a Sunday and started with the art workshop at 1pm which basically was a room with art supplies and some some young helpful staff to assist if you need anything. It was fine, my kids were busy gluing and cutting but it wasn't the guided programme we've encountered elsewhere. At 2pm we went to the planetarium which was the real highlight! The guide for the live show was fantastically knowledgeable and engaging. The museum itself is rather small and felt like it lacked a cohesive narrative. The Trevor house also is only a few rooms, as most of it is closed off. We'd happily come back to spend a few hours on a winter day and kids def have already asked to come back for the planetarium. read more

This was a cute little museum and a nice way to spend the afternoon on a day during school break. It wasn't very crowded and the admission was reasonable. We did the planetarium which we really enjoyed. It was our favorite part. The art collection they had on display was very modest. I enjoyed the collection of posters about WWI as I am a little bit of a buff on that war. We were really looking forward to the mansion but were disappointed to learn it was only a few rooms on the ground floor. We were really hoping it be a lot more. read more

I visited this museum during the late summer and enjoyed the attraction. I was part of a hiking group in the area and decided to check this museum out since I was in the area. I like that it wasn't too crowded so you can walk around without bumping into other people. There were a few exhibits that were cool. My favorite part was the mansion that was attached to the museum and part of the admission price. The views from the museum were beautiful. I came to this museum for the video game art exhibit and LOVED it. First off, don't miss the entrance from the road! It sneaks up on you. It is only $6 to enter the museum, which is a steal considering all of the content inside. I won't give a review of the specific exhibit since it is no longer there. I wished I had discovered this place earlier. After looking for something to do on a nice late winter weekend, I saw that this place was only 25 minutes away from me, had great reviews and the prices were very reasonable. We decided to go at about 1:30 PM on a Saturday. After getting off Cross County Parkway and driving through some not-so-nice neighborhood, we found that this museum seemed to be in a little world of its own. The parking area had tons of spots and we were surprised to see how empty it was for a nice Saturday afternoon. Though we did notice in the parking lot that there was a minivan with its side door wide and soon after we got into the museum they announced that another car's trunk was open... given the area, I was a little nervous after hearing this but the security guard seems to be informative and concerned himself about the incidents so I was sure they were keeping a watchful eye on the lot. The front desk attendant was very nice and patient with all of our questions. The fees were very reasonable with general admission $6 for adults and $3 for children and the planetarium pricing for each show being $4 for adults and $2 for children. The planetarium shows were at 12, 2 and 3:30. There were lots to see in the museum. Lots to learn there. Some interesting Civil War/Abraham Lincoln stuff in the main area and the galleries. There is currently a Lincoln exhibit there now which is great. The Paper Macheed BookStore was amazing. Lots of details and I could only imagine the countless hours it took to make it. The Mansion is also great. Lots of history there with many preserved items including old rare books and furniture. Hearing a music box in an old dusty large house does get creepy but it was super cool. When walking around, pay attention to all the small details including the tons of individual books. It is only one floor as the upstairs is closed off for offices. There is also a section downstairs dedicated to the Hudson River. This was the science section of the museum as it not only gave a brief history of the river but had tons of information on the animals and plants that live there. They made this section interesting by having little stamping devices and giving blank cards in the beginning so as you progress through the section you acquaire stamps from each subsection. I learned a lot here. The planetarium was great. About 5-10 minutes prior to the show you line up right outside the planetarium. Just before the show starts a staff member is there to check your ticket and let you in first come first serve. The rear seats are the best as you can see more, otherwise you will spend a lot of the time leaning your neck back (which can become annoying throughout the hour-long show). The show itself was very informative. Having learned this stuff in grade school (25 years ago), it really took me back. The presenter was nice and knowledgeable and although when I first heard that the show was "45 minutes" long I grunted a bit, she was able to hold my attention throughout the whole hour that it ran. I would definitely like to return for another show. The museum store was small and had lots of science things (astronaut ice cream) as well as some beverages. There is a small learning center on the other side of the lobby that we missed but I heard that they had some crafts for the kids. All the staff members were great throughout our visit. This is really a hidden gem in Yonkers and I recommend everyone to visit given the price and all that this place offers. read more

A real jewel of a museum. Combination art museum, science museum, planetarium, and historic home, it literally has something for everyone. The art museum section presents a wide variety of shows which never cease to impress me (currently has a Bakelite exhibit up, total hipster kryptonite, but being in Yonkers, not a one in sight on the opening weekend). The science part is really just an exhibit on the ecology of the hudson river, which is really well done and interesting. I have never been to the Planetarium, at my age, they would probably think I was a weirdo. The historic home is a great victorian. There are also some great views of the Palisade cliffs across the river. Can be reached quite easily by Metro North trains from NYC (about a 5 minute walk from Glenwood station). It would be fairly easy to reach by car, but a gps would be helpful in this section of Yonkers. If you go, ask the desk clerk for directions down to the waterfront JFK park, which is about a 5 minute walk and is really pretty. Also, the surrounding neighborhood has some really nice old victorians to check out. Just don't walk to far south of the train station since it gets pretty dicey that way. read more

Not bad for a local museum. Maybe I'm spoiled by the gigantic museums in NYC but seeing everything in an hour is quite disappointing. The current exhibit of "Paint box Autumn" was nicely displayed on the two floors with painters from the 1800's up to today. The planetarium was closed but we looked at the few displays which included meteorites and telescopic lenses. The Bookstore exhibit was a very colorful, walk-in exhibit. We walked through the educational Hudson River area and even got to watch a staff member feed the seahorses. Did you know there are seahorses in the Hudson River? They're not native but come from the Caribbean on the Gulf Stream. That was probably the highlight of our visit. We always end with a look in the gift shop. The stuff they had there included fancy gift items for adults as well as children. Many different types of kaleidoscopes, big and small. Drinks and snacks were sold, to be eaten in the lobby where there were a few tables and seats. We didn't see any Victorian house? Not sure what the other reviewer was referring to. Last but not least, the staff was extremely friendly! I'm used to mean security guard but they smile and say hello. I had a wet umbrella in my hands and the guard politely asked me to leave it the coat room. This was like a large walk-in closet with some lockers on one side and hanging rack on the other. No one watching over your stuff. read more

5 Stars if you have kids!! Small local museum with limited space and art work but they've made the most of it. During my visit they've had the African-American Contemporary art works. I don't know if it's a permanent display. They have more security guards than actual visitors so right off the bet you realize that this museum is a hot spot for kids. They have a planetarium and a riverama exhibit. What was very impressive to me was the actual historic mansion. You can walk around the house and see the antiques, and more artwork (although during my visit, the second floor was closed so call before going) The price for entrance is very affordable and for planetarium show, you only have to pay an extra$1. Over all if you have kids, I would highly recommend it. Otherwise, check it out if you're in the area. read more

A little gem in the YO! They have great exhibits & just updated their wonderful planetarium. They have early planetarium afternoon shows just for kids & a great series about local constellations called, "The Night Sky." My parents took me here as a kid and now I love seeing my two little ones enjoy it. Come & check it out. This is one museum that doesn't get the traffic it deserves! read more

A nice change of pace in downtown Yonkers. Artwork includes both a permanent collection and exhibits that that change regularly. The real draw to the museum is the mansion that hides behind the portion of the museum you first see. Glenview was once a private residence, then became the museum. The house is decorated in a manner that was believed to be true to the time when the Trevor family called it home, and now houses a very large dollhouse filled with exquisite detail and furnishings. The "Red Grooms' Bookstore" is life-size art display, where you can enter the display and be a part of the work of art. The gift shop has a number of educational souvenirs and general items relating to the Hudson River and Yonkers, but there was barely anything unique to the museum. The only choices I saw as true museum souvenirs was a children's book about the dollhouse (Nybelwyck Hall), and a couple of postcards. read more

Underrated museum in my hometown. The landscapes and vintage photos are beautiful. They frequently have new exhibitions. The new planetarium is fun for the kids and the Glenview house is a trip! The riverama is also cool, many people in Yonkers have no clue about the wonders of the river next to us. Last summer they had a series of performing arts programs in the amphitheater that were very fun. They seem to have a good lineup for this summer as well, check it out Friday and Saturday nights. There is plenty of parking at the marina next door and the shows are free! I've also been here for the Family Arts sessions they have on weekends, we all had a great time doing arts & crafts. read more

We went to the museum today with a four year old and a six year old. We had bought tickets to see the planetarium show that was supposed to be for 4 year olds and up. The planetarium is a wonderful space and the visuals were nice, but the show would be appropriate for serious adults....certainly not for children of any age. By the end of the hour long program we were the only ones left in the theater which should tell the very nice young man in charge of it that there was something amiss. It was, to be honest, just boring. After the show we went to do arts and crafts in a lovely space that was run by teenage volunteers. That was a huge success...the girls who were volunteering were well trained and helpful, the project was fun, and the supplies were plentiful. Elaine read more

I love that it is conveniently located near my home. The exhibits are changed every month and there is a planetarium show on Fridays. The gift shop has a few nice souvenirs and books. The Glenwood Mansion behind it once belonged to the Trevor family. It is now part of the museum. Inside you will find antique Victorian Era furnishings and actual belongings of the Trevor family. The view of the Palisades and Hudson River had a nice topper to this location. Check it out, if you have not done so, yet. read more

Great for adults and children...my kids 9&4 had a blast. Glenview residence is also worth it. Great 19th century mansion. It's a nice little museum that is easy to get through in short amount of time and appropriately priced. It's nothing grand but it's hidden gem is it's extensive history display of the Hudson River which is interesting and unique due to the fact you are standing real time on the river you are learning the history of. read more

We were able to host a small cocktail reception (~120 people) for the National Convention of our Youth Organization. Masha, Ecka, and the staff were all super helpful, accommodating, and flexible in making sure our event was a success. This included access to the courtyard, the Gallery, and a planetarium show which was very interesting. Everyone loved it saying it was a very cool unique venue for gathering. Highly recommend! This is a great little museum which some very nice paintings and exhibits. The attached Victorian house was my favorite. The dollhouse in the mansion is interesting and today's George Washington exhibit was better than I expected. The place is easy to get to, has lots of free parking, and it is not crowded at all. The staff seemed quite friendly too. You will be impressed, and at $6 per person and $3 for kids under 18, you will get your money's worth. read more
