I found a bat in my spare room late one night, I'm pretty sure my dog carried it down from the attic as it was on the floor and she was staring at it. I sent my brother a picture (I didn't know what it was) and he wanted me to remove it myself but I was too freaked out so I didn't, figuring he could deal with the removal the next day. The next morning it was not where I left it! The previous night I had shut the door, left the light on and put a towel under the door. I called HVWS that same morning it disappeared, and they were able to come the next morning and said it would be $135 (tax included) for an inspection (to see if I had a bachelor bat or a colony) and that would include removing my bat if we could find it. Which I thought was incredibly reasonable. That day, my brother did come over and tried to help me find it, we tore the room apart. No bat. My brother said it probably left and I didn't think this was possible as we could not find areas it could get out without moving fixtures. So after he left, I turned the light off for the first time since the bat had appeared just for the heck of it (leaving the towel under the door as it had been). Within a few minutes I heard flapping!!! I couldn't believe it! Now I knew I had to somehow stick my hand in and turn the light on, since it kept flapping around and I knew it would fly around all night crapping on everything I owned. I called my brother and he couldn't believe it was still in there and also did not offer to come back to deal with turning the light on. My fear of the bat was overridden by fear of all my things covered in bat feces by morning (I use that room as a wardrobe and it is loaded with my clothes and accessories) - so I did turn on the light crazy fast (my wrist went unscathed and it stopped flapping (I didn't go in again)). The next AM Neil from Hudson Valley Wildlife arrived right on time. He and I looked in the room some (no bat), then he did his inspection and write up. During this time I turned off the light in the bat room (the room it is in is very dark in daylight because of the window shades I have) and prayed I would hear flapping, but I did not. I was so nervous Neil would leave, and the bat would remain. Neil had already told me bats know it's not night despite the darkness of a room. The reason I am so impressed with this business is once he went over the results of the inspection (during which time Neil showed me some holes I could plug myself where things could get into my house - he also told me to get gutters and some other work done before worrying about protection against a bat colony (turns out my bat was a bachelor (woo-hoo!!!)), but I couldn't really celebrate with my bachelor bat hanging out in my wardrobe room unaccounted for still)... Neil said he would help me look for the bat in that room until he had to leave for his next appointment in Troy which was 10 am - he had got to my house at 8 am. My experience is not many business owners are willing to dedicate this much free time to helping a customer without charging something for it. The $135 single bat removal is the lowest price you will find, a lot of places give free inspections but charge upward $225 for a single bat removal. We tore that room apart again and eventually I saw the bat!!! It was hiding underneath a stuffed dog I use for my pin collection (everyone asks if I still have it - I do, I learned so much about bats over the time with my bachelor bat house guest, including that bats are meticulous animals and constantly preening themselves). Neil got his gloves, and he was able to humanely capture him and said he would release him back to the wild (Neil and his girlfriend fostered baby bats at one point in time). He got the little thing from his hiding spot - and if anyone reading this has a bat they are scared of, let me just say I felt so much empathy for this little creature by the end. When I saw him hiding he didn't even react, just stayed all hunched up. He had to have been starving by that point, too. Unless they have rabies (they die real fast with rabies, if my bat had rabies it would have been dead within a day) my experience has taught me not to freak out as they do not fly at you or toward the light even when they are trapped. Knowing what I know now, I would just go in a room and open the window if I was back in this situation (it would still freak me out not knowing whether it was in a room or not though, I wanted it gone because all I could picture down the road was finding it's lifeless body in a purse or something. I am an animal lover and I do not like to see anything suffer. So as long as your bat does not have rabies do not be scared, and definitely call this business my experience could not have been more positive and I was incredibly impressed with the degree of professionalism and expertise. Like other reviewers on this site and others, I woke up to a bat circling my bedroom in the middle of the night. I've had bats in other houses before so, after getting over the scare, I opened the window, turned off the light I had turned on to see what it was, and left the room. Then I got to wondering how exactly the bat got in and that's the part that really worried me. Reading around online, I learned that this type of event can be a sign that you have a bat colony in your attic. I called HVWS around 6 AM and Matt answered the phone and made me feel confident that the bat was gone from my room so I could sleep in the room for the next two nights until they could do a bat inspection. Luckily for me, there was no bat colony. But there were a number of places the bat could have found its way in through so Matt took care of making my house bat-proof. And there'd been squirrels above the mudroom for a little bit so I had HVWS take care of them as well. No more bats, no more squirrels, but just before the final removal of the squirrel trap, I discovered a return of some small snakes into my basement through the bilco door area. Another company had supposedly taken care of them last summer, but there they were. Matt and Neil screened off the space under the door through which they must have entered and didn't even charge me for it. I wish I had called them a year ago when I first found the snakes. The other company charged me a bunch of money, did some work which they never came back to finish, and never responded to my phone calls thereafter. If you live anywhere in the Hudson Valley and have unwanted wildlife entering your home or office, don't call anyone but Matt and Neil at HVWS. You have found the right company! Hire them for your wildlife and pest problems. We were frantic when a bat flew out of our chimney. After many calls to other companies, we fortunately found HVWS. Matt listened to our problem, did a thorough inspection and answered all of our questions. He had an economical solution to keep the bats away. A few weeks later, a snake got in our house. I found a bat in my bed room at 2 AM. My husband was out of town and I was hysterical. I trapped the bat in the bed room. The next morning I called HVWS and spoke to Matt. Squirrels in the ceiling, called requested the emergency treatment. Team showed up quickly and spent quite a lot of time assessing the situation, where they were entering etc. We opted for a one way tunnel, animal can get out but not back in. Mom was not happy and ripped the thing apart. The team was back first thing in the morning to take care of business. No squirrels yay! Seriously the best. I had a family of European Starlings living in my soffit and called these guys based on their stellar reviews - and here I am verifying they are legit! Came out the same afternoon, in the rain no less, did an entire home assessment, closed up a hole in my attic where squirrels had gotten in in the past (a piece of siding had fallen off because of it, I thought it was because of bad weather - they put the piece of siding back up for me, too!) They put screens on my attic vents and then addressed the Starlings. The babies in the nest were close to flying out on their own, and I was given the option to have them removed immediately or wait a week. I decided to wait. HVWS came back the following week and cleaned up the nest and secured the hole the birds had used to get in so that they couldn't reuse it. These guys guarantee their work, as well. We called Neil for what we thought was a small mouse infestation. What Neil found was a veritable mouse catacomb with 30+ years of skeletons and a newly dead mouse. YIKES! Fortunately for us, Neil went above and beyond, removing the skeletons, installing a screen to prevent any more mice from falling through, and re-Sheetrocking the wall (not his job, totally went above and beyond). He gave us a thorough estimate for the other weak areas he saw in the house but also advised us that foundation repair would probably address the problems more permanently. Look no further, SERIOUSLY. We have some mice in the house we just bought, and it has been giving us major anxiety. When I was looking into services, I saw that some pest companies offer a "free inspection". But I also saw these guys, Neil and Matt, who have a phone number you can call 24 hours a day and talk to one of them, but they charge a nominal fee for an inspection. I was momentarily torn, so I called and got Neil at 9pm one night and he talked to me for 20 minutes!! So I decided to go for it. He came to my house the very next day. I soon realized that the "free inspection" other companies offer is just a sales pitch. Neil encouraged me to try and fix the problem myself. He conducted a very thorough inspection, identified where the mice were getting in, and helped us fix it ourselves. Since then he has checked in with us several times via email and phone, and given us expert consultation each time. They know their stuff! The price we paid for an inspection is an incredible deal for the service you get. I'm serious when I say to hire these guys if you have mice.
