Absolutely awesome accommodations Well first you have a lovely and very private space to call your own. Combine that with a very warm and friendly host (Sharon) and our stay could not have been better. The Rainbow Lookout met all our needs and had everything we needed in the kitchen, plenty of towels for bath and beach, beach chairs, ice chest, and extra scuba equipment. We could walk down the private road to catch the sunrise; we drank our coffee In the hottub and we swam in the very nice lagoon style pool every single day. When we return to Maui we will definitely come back. We loved the home and surrounding areas and enjoyed the natural setting as well. If you don't like nature and want to be pampered by hotel staff then don't come here. If you don't mind seeing a gecko scramble across the rocks, then you'll be ok here. If you want to see what it's like to actually live like a Maui denizen then this is the place for you. Sharon could not have been more responsive and accommodating. Huelo is located on Maui's rugged north shore, 20 minutes east of the small town of Paia on the road to Hana. Since you're 20 minutes' drive from the nearest town, this place is super-secluded, but offers all of the amenities you could imagine. The road down to the place is only partially paved (last time we were there in 2003, anyway,) and so you have a very slow, bumpy ride down. We first did it in some kind of crapmobile rental, and whenever we tried to take the road too quickly, residents along the way come out and give you the stink-eye. Not worth busting your axle anyway, so take it slow. Huelo Point Lookout is just about the last place, down the last driveway on the last road as you make your way off the Hana Highway and down toward the coast. Some of the cottages on the property offer ocean views (the main house, for example,) but for the most part the coast is hidden from view, so if you're looking for beach front, this is not for you. What we loved about Huelo is that it's much more of a rapidly changing environment than getting a cookie-cutter chain hotel place in Wailea, Kaanapali or in Kapalua. It's a more rugged and unexpected experience with lots of wind, quick, fleeting rainstorms and amazing tranquility and seclusion. No kids in the communal pool yelling all day, no one next door making noise. You literally feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Both times we have stayed there, we opted for the Haleakala Cottage, which is basically a studio apartment (free standing, no immediate neighbors) with a full kitchen, patio, its own Jacuzzi and the best part: a FANtastic outdoor shower. The small office, with 2 sets of washers and dryers plus all the linens you could ever need (including fabulous, huge beach towels) is just around the corner from this cottage, and me being a laundry freak, I was in heaven (guests have free access to the laundry facilities anytime.) Owners Jeff and Sharyn Stone and their sweet son, Kai, have gone out of their way to provide their guests with privacy and seclusion, without being so absent that you don't feel well taken care of. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of fresh, whole-bean coffee, and you can also order special treats like additional flowers or chocolates for your arrival (my husband surprised me with this on our honeymoon.) In all, I think we've spent a total of almost 3 weeks here over our two trips to Hawaii, and I would stay there again in a snap. The only perceived drawback might be the distance from the place to the nearest sign of civilization, but keep in mind that Maui is only so big, so any place, including Hana or even Wailea on the southern west coast is only 40-60 minutes drive away. And when you're in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, on vacation, what do you have more of than leisure time? Recommendations: - Take your watches off when you arrive and put them away someplace. Go with the light and rise when you want, eat when you want, be active when you want and sleep when you want. - Bring some food in from one of the places in Paia to keep around -- fruit, milk, etc. - daily supplies that will keep you going since you're a good 20 minutes from the grocery store, and driving that road at night can be precarious. - I'm going to write a review of this as well, but the Paia Fish Market, right on the main corner of town is unbelievably good. I recommend the fish and chips with lots of vinegar and Tabasco. Ugh. I am drooling thinking about it. - Pack a picnic and head to Hana for the day. Take every opportunity to turn left as you head out and get to the coast for amazing, out-of-the-way waterfalls. We were here for a week for our honeymoon and had a great time. It is a beautiful place, but not your typical resort hotel. First, it is off the beaten path. Like way way off. 40 minutes to Kahului, almost 30 to Paia. This is amazing if you want somewhere quiet, secluded, to relax and rest. Not the place to go if you want to enjoy the night life. We did spend a lot of days at the beach though, just know you'll have a (beautiful) drive to get there. Second, it's got 4 suits, each designed to be perfect for romantic getaways. There are very dense trees between the fully separate apartments for maximum privacy. Even so, the suits are still within shouting distance of each other, with outdoor two person showers (also indoor showers), private hot tubs, and lots and lots of big beautiful glass windows. Private but still possible to catch some accidental glances, be warned. The kitchen feels reasonably new. The floors are nice tile and hardwood. The showers both indoor and out seem clean (though I prefer flip flops for the outdoor shower). There is a gas 2 burner stove top and charcoal grill outside (byo coal) and a fridge and dishwasher in the kitchen. Kitchen is reasonably equipped with utensils and plates. We did a lot of cooking which was great. The place isn't brand new and immaculate, but it's well looked after and clean, cute, and feels very local. The care takers were super friendly as well. The only negative thing is that the internet was down more often than it was up. The caretakers were very good at trying to fix it, but I think the issue was the ISP as often as not. Still, we had better things to do than play on the internet all day. read more

Huelo Point Lookout is truly a hidden paradise in Maui. It's located on the gorgeous Hana highway, which made it ideal for a vacation full of beauty and adventure. Some of my favorite spots close by were the bamboo forest and Baldwin beach. I cannot day enough how magical this bed and breakfast is. Sharyn is one of the most gracious hosts I have ever stayed with. She is so knowledgeable about Hawaii and I learned so much from her about the land and the local flavor of Maui. If you are looking to have an authentic stay in Maui, this is the place. I hope to be back someday! read more

On a scale of 1 to 5 Stars...Five stars are not enough! We give Sharyn and Jeff Stone and the Star Cottage at Huelo Pt Lookout Bed and Breakfast the same stars that appear in the crisp clear night sky from the view of the coconut grove just outside your door! So easy to view and relax while you lay in your hammock beneath the Palms... So, my dear Gentle Traveler, please go stay in Star Cottage and be open to all it has to offer. It has it's own vibe, and it's own special brand of awesome. From the moment we walked into this cottage, our souls just opened up to the "mana" of Maui. (Mana= Hawaiian for Spirit) Time in the hammock under the light of the full moon, making friends with Snowball the chicken, sleeping to the sound of gentle rainfall, and relaxing in the private hot tub are only a few of the moments of "ahhhhh" enjoyed in this cottage. Oh, and the fresh fruit and herbs on the property - I can't forget to mention that! All at your fingertips ! Exploring Maui, and blissfully being able to take back home some of it's "mana" are what made our time in Maui, and stay at Huelo Point Bed and Breakfast so very special. The graciousness, hospitality, and cool hippie vibe from Sharyn are by far exemplary. I didn't feel like a "customer", or even a guest... but a friend. Her warmth, professionalism, and "insider tips" on the "real Maui" were super useful. She is a fantastic communicator and was always readily available to answer any questions. What is NOT to like: No TV, only sometimes Wi-Fi. Total escape. This is what we were looking for--escape. The place is beyond words.... Pros: Private Lush property - full of fruits, plants, room to explore Accommodations are perfect - felt like home! Quiet. Secluded. Beautiful! Close drive to just about anywhere you want to go on Maui Ask Sharyn for local recommendations and call HER to book your reservations directly. Much easier, and she's so much fun to chat with! Cons: If you are a "tourist" and like "resorts" this place is not for you... If you are an adventurer and a traveler, you've found THE PERFECT SPOT. So perfect in fact, that I almost don't want to tell you how special it is here, but that wouldn't be kind of me not to share... The biggest con: Had to leave. We stayed in the Rainbow Hideaway and it was the absolute perfect vacation getaway! Sharyn and Jeff have created the ultimate escape for those wanting to avoid the standard hotel vacation. Freshly harvested bananas hanging just outside our unit's entrance, gathering eggs fresh from the chicken coop every morning, picking herbs from the herb garden, watching the moon move across the sky thru the overhead windows above our king size bed every night, watching the sun rise from one of four lanais, our private hot tub and outdoor couples shower . . . the list goes on!! There is nothing I would change about this wonderful property! If your intent is to relax and enjoy the true spirit and peaceful nature of Hawaii, this is the best way to go! As suggested in the property overview at Maui-vacationrentals.com, it's a good idea to shop at the Mana Grocery Store in Paia before coming to the property (and before it gets dark). Pick up your food supplies there. No liquor sold at Mana, so head up the road another block or two, and there's a great little liquor store. Mahalo to Sharyn and Jeff for their amazing hospitality! I would be astounded to see anything less than five stars for this place. It is perfection incarnate! Sharyn and Jeff (proprietors) go out of their way to ensure you have the best time of your stay in HI in this home. And though they live on the property, you'll likely not see them or any other guests unless you have a reason to. Sharyn checked in with us on our first day there, letting us call her once we were up and about and ready to greet the day. She gave us some wonderful suggestions like Grandma's Cafe for lunch and a hidden waterfall on the Road to Hana that we had to ourselves. When we arrived, fresh plumeria blossoms covered each room of our Ocean Lookout "cottage." Sharyn had arranged organic Chardonnay and chilled wine glasses in the fridge along with juicy local fruits. She also had some macnut treats on the counter and beautiful plant arrangements around the place. We were fully equipped with beach towels, shower towels, and even a Road to Hana CD listening guide. If we needed something (beach chairs?), all we had to do was ask. The "green book" Sharyn and Jeff leave for guests helped us understand the how-to's of staying here -- telling us how to compost and some navigational tips to avoid unsuspecting couples. The entire property, from cottage placement to landscaping, is designed to create privacy and it does that so well. And Sharyn's so discreet as to not rent out the downstairs of Ocean Lookout if someone (like us) is renting the upstairs. Thank you! We had a view of sunrise every morning from the Ocean Lookout and enjoyed having the jacuzzi all to ourselves. Even our departure didn't escape Sharyn's artistic touch -- two hibiscus blooms were on our windshield when we departed. One word of warning -- Sharyn said that at least one other person was dismayed to find geckos about and strong trade winds and rain. Well, you're visiting HAWAII -- what do you expect? As Sharyn replied to that unfortunate fellow, go stay in a whitewashed hotel if you're not up for the adventure. This was such a blessed way to begin our marriage. If we ever make it back (& I hope we do) it will be hard to decide in which cottage to stay. The Ocean Lookout was like a dream and we didn't even get glimpses of any of the others. Huelo Point is AMAZING!!!! My husband and I stayed here for our 1st anniversary trip to Hawaii! We were so very glad we stayed somewhere that was secluded, peaceful, and quite. It allowed us to truly feel like we were "escaping it all." We stayed in the Haleakala Cottage. It was beautiful! Star gazing from our own hot tub, cooking our own meals, and listening to the wind and waves as we fell asleep- it was all so amazing! The outdoor shower was so fabulous!!! Sharon and Jeff were great hosts! It is so great to see two people who truly love where they live, and take great care that others can enjoy it as well. From my first email through our stay (which were about a year apart- I like to plan ahead!) Sharon and Jeff embodied the spirit of "Aloha." This was a perfect place to begin our 25th anniversary celebration. We stayed in the Rainbow Point Lookout, and it was a peaceful paradise. We loved the amazing view from our wall of windows and the lanais. The fresh bananas hanging at our doorway and the coconut made for fun Hawaiian treats. The hammock was a perfect place to unwind. The private hot tub and outdoor shower was an added treat. Sharyn went the extra mile, giving us tips of how to best spend our short time there and treating us to scrumptious banana bread. Natural rain forest charm and only a short walk to the cliffs overlooking incredible shoreline. It's not as remote as some might think. Phone signal is spotty but not absent. We had all the internet we needed. The property is 2 acres of lusciousness. There was a nice variety of fruit trees, herbs and tropical flowers. Hearing the chickens in the morning was kinda fun and added to the adventure. But they weren't obnoxious. We didn't stay at Sharyn and Jeff's little piece of paradise for a consumer experience. We wanted to enjoy the living. That means living plants, animals and insects. I loved and welcomed the geckos that did bug control. The geckos are so cute, and so shy that they aren't any threat at all. Sharyn and Jeff are very conscientious and kind stewards of the property. They are incredibly sweet people who have created opportunity for others to have an alternative and more healthy experience of island life. There's a nice group of young adults who take really good care of the grounds and keep things clean. As for nightlife we were only 30 mins. from Paia. We were fortunate to catch an open mic night at Charlie's. Charlie's is Willie Nelson's place. They have great food and live music events. Huelo Pt. Lookout is a great location if your going the Road to Hana too. I could go on, but you really need to experience this place yourself. Aloha! read more

Well if there is Heaven on Earth, I found it a Huelo Point Lookout. It IS what Hawaii is supposed to be. Even though most people think Hawaii=beach, I think this is the REAL Hawaii. It's such an awesome location, still close enough to civilization, if that's what you choose. But if you want to chill and hang out with nature, this is the place. Each "lookout" is totally private, my last trip was in Rainbow, and the bedroom at the top of a beautiful wooden spiral staircase is to die for, all glass with unbelievable views in every direction. Outside is the most amazing nautilus shower and private hot tub surrounded by beautiful vegetation and a few steps in the other direction is a huge swimming pool also in a lush tropical setting. I hate to admit it but on my last trip I didn't even put my toe in the ocean or drive past Paia. I was totally content just hanging out at the property. It was one of my favorite Maui vacations. I still have two more "lookouts" to experience, Star and Haleakala. Also I'd like to mention Sharyn's attention to detail, beautiful fresh flowers in every room, coffee, fruit and the Wine! As my co-traveler said "It was 10 Stars" and I have to agree, the wind, the rain, the sun, it was peaceful bliss. If you want a REAL Hawaiian experience you've got to check out this place. read more
