Quick trip here to de-stress in nature. The fall colors are not as impressive around the lake as they are on the main loop drive. Took a quick trail in the woods around the beach. Heard more birds than i saw but i did see some. But im caring for my 91 yr old mom right now as she broke her back. Can't go far so this was a perfect 2 hour getaway.

This is a difficult review to write for several reasons....I was with a group of similarly older folks, so we didn't get out of the car much to explore the facilities and amenities. Mainly, we just drove around the park which appeared to be well maintained and clean. The main building for visitors was undergoing some renovation and looked to be getting the roof repaired. What I found interesting was that you could make arrangements for staying in a cabin, or in the main building. I don't think they allow tent camping, but the cabins appeared to be well maintained and some were near the lake, so they had great views between the water on one side and the forest on the other. But since we didn't stay overnight, I can't say how affordable or comfortable the accommodations are. The lake is large and had a boat rental / marina area. But since I'm not a boater, I don't know how their pricing is and what restrictions they have on bringing your own boat to the park. Being from out of state, I am not sure if I would need a separate license to boat here or not. There are lots of amenities including mountain bike trails, a sand beach and playground near the lake, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a nature center which was closed while we were there. It didn't take long to drive from amenity to amenity, but if you had to walk, it would take some time and effort because of the park's size. I wish I had my camera ready as three female deer walked across the road back to the cabins right in front of our vehicle. What amazes me is how quickly they blend into the woods as we pulled up to where they had entered. Completely invisible to all of us in the car. Nice to know that the animals look healthy and well fed in the park. We mainly came here because our friends who were driving us through the park has done their "courting" in the park about 50 years ago and wanted to see how much it had changed. They were well pleased with the park condition and the upgrades that had occurred. Review #3796

This was another local state park that we explored earlier this year during quarantine. It's pretty remote and we figured since the weather wasn't super warm it wouldn't be super busy. The trails are very rustic and not always marked well. The mapping system is okay, but I feel like it could be better. The beach looked nice, but the water was kind of gross. It wasn't swimming season so it didn't matter. I'd be curious to go back now and see if things have improved with time. It was still a fun trip and I'm looking forward to going back and seeing what else my family can find.

I have never been to this park except for when I was a young one and that was to golf with my dad a few times. Shame on me!! It took me to go as another carry out date night occurrence. Good thing!! This is a nice place. It is not huge but nice lake with a small beach, But an huge parking area. It has campground, lodging, restaurant, trails, horse trails, covered bridge, nature trails you get the point all packed into this great park. So go out and enjoy this place!

No clear signage as to which trail one is at. This is how most of the trails were marked.

Hueston Woods, with it's tall trees, towers over the surrounding farm country. As one approaches, it is quite a sight. In the fall, when boating activities have come to a close, the lake is quite tranquil. I can only imagine how the lake buzzes with activity in the summer. Unfortunately, I had to take a star away for the trail signage, or rather lack their of. Before visiting we download, and printed the map. Our plan was to hike the part of the American Discovery Trail that runs through Houston Woods. (The complete American Discovery Trail runs from the Pacific ocean to the Atlantic.) While the trail is featured on the map, there are no markers at the park. Even with the Park's map, it was hard to tell which trail on is on. On the map, some trails seem to touch or overlap. It was confusing. Trails are marked with what looks like a piece of pvc pipe. It wasn't overly clear. While beautiful, a lot of the trails were muddy, and slippery, despite it not having rained for days.

Not much privacy at the campsites Very close together Big shower house Toilets had no doors just a shower curtain. That was weird. We were not there for the Halloween nights but people were decorating like crazy!

This has been our go to campground for a quick getaway for many years. The camp area is pretty simple compared to other campgrounds. The bulk of their sites are 30amp and only have electric. I did see a sign on this trip that said they will he upgrading sites in section A to full hook up in the coming year. There are several things to do during your stay at Hueston Woods. Hiking trails, Mt. bike trails, kayaking or canoeing on the lake, disc golf course, golf course, nature center and much more. Hueston Woods is a beautiful park that's worth taking the time to explore.

One of my favorite parts was the nature center. The staff and naturalists were incredibly kind and helpful, and the space itself is really well done. There's a cute gift shop, educational displays, and even a small children's museum feel with a few live animals to see. It's a great spot to learn something new or play around. Outside, the park is incredible. The trails are extremely well maintained, both the wooded paths and the paved ones, making it perfect for an easy walk or a hike. There's also an outdoor fitness trail that I loved. It has different workout stations along the way, and it's actually really fun, not just functional. It's a great way for both kids and adults to be active. There's also a huge playground and a mini water park area for kids, plus accessible bathrooms and good seasonal amenities. It's very family friendly without feeling overcrowded. If you're into disc golf, this place is a gem. There's a large disc golf course, and they even sell discs and gear right inside the nature center. Another thing worth mentioning is how amazing Great Parks of Hamilton County is overall. They offer so many programs like beginner fishing, guided hikes, plant swaps, art workshops, amphibian hunts, and even owl pellet dissections. Not all of these are specific to this park, but many are hosted here, and it really adds to how special the experience is. Overall, this is an extremely pleasant place to spend time. Whether you're walking the trails, working out, bringing kids to play, or just exploring the nature center, there's something for everyone.

As I get to a new place in my current cancer journey, I'm finding that I am spending a lot of time in nature and doing bucket list items (No, I'm not dying). I've always wanted to visit Indiana's state parks and have been taking the time to start doing so. Despite its size, Versailles State Park is definitely lesser utilized than number one (Brown County). It does have the expected rolling hills of Southeastern Indiana and it has a 220-acre lake. You can rent rowboats, canoes, or kayaks. Versailles has over 20 miles of horse trails along with mountain bike and hiking trails. Located in Ripley County, the park was established in 1943. This area has a lot of historical significance including with the Civil War and the Civilian Conservation Corps. If you know the story of Morgan's Raiders, they actually made their way through this area during the Civil War. Versailles was also briefly under Confederate control. Versailles has a CCC Commemorative statue you can check out. There's quite a bit of camping within the state park. There are 238 camping sites with the majority offering electric. Versailles State Park offers a dam that's cool to visit along with a nature center. There are easy, moderate, and difficult hiking trails - as a wheelchair user, I was rather underwhelmed with accessibility options. However, I was still able to enjoy the park quite a bit. Fishing is available here along with bird watching and a variety of other activities. Versailles is fairly secluded. You're about a mile away from the nearest restaurant but you do have a variety of options within ten miles (including a motel for those who'd rather not rough it). The website has the full list of camping rates. The website also has all admission prices (there are daily and seasonal rates along with discounts for those on disability and veterans). Annual passes are for the most part good at any DNR property that charges a gate fee, though before leaving I tend to check websites just to make sure as there are some special exhibits and such that do charge a separate fee - that said, it's fairly rare. I would note that in-state fee is a bit lower than out-of-state fee (they judge by the license plate). I enjoyed my time here and could easily see some camping options. I loved the lake and did get some time on the easier trails. As I noted, accessibility options are a bit limited but DNR has overall massively improved accessibility statewide in parks. I could easily see making this a weekend trip with a stop in nearby Versailles for antiquing, nature, and history.

The surface was paved so the kids can ride their bikes around. It was a far way to the pool, but the pool is wonderful, slides, and diving board. The only negative is they only have one dump station that two vehicles can pull up at a time. There are close to 300 sites and it's a long wait trying to get out. It would benefit much if each campsite had a dump station.

There are 14 handicap accessible sites in the lettered section of the campgrounds, The playgrounds look to be in good condition (we didn't use them). The shower houses are large and in good repair. Pets are allowed and I'm pleased to say that overall the absence of pet feces is amazing. For those staying in electric only or primitive sites at the dump station there is a tank fill. Water pressure in the C section is about 70psi when we tested it so one shouldn't forget there regulator. As for the dump station there really isn't much innovation, it's a dump station and if you can't smell it from your site it's a great station. Camp store and bait shop, boat launch just down the drive along with (2) more dump stations totaling (3) for the campgrounds. (5) total shower houses and numerous toilets. Whitewater State Park was the 16th state park in Indiana and was founded in 1949. It's actually the third largest. It has 200 acre Whitewater Lake along with shoreline hiking, flat-water boating, swimming, fishing, and camping opportunities. It has 9 miles of horseback riding trails. The park area was originally purchased by Union, Fayette, Franklin, and Wayne counties to serve as a memorial for those lost during World War II. Additional activities include picnic areas with shelters (reservations required), interpretive naturalist services, 1 boat launch ramp at Whitewater Lake, bridle trails, cabins, fishing/ice fishing, hiking trails, canoe/paddleboat/rowboat rentals, swimming, and two marinas. Camping includes 236 electric sites, 45 non-electric, and 37 horsemen's primitive sites. There's a camp store, dumping station, and youth tent area. There are five hiking trails - all are considered moderate in difficulty. They range from 1-2.7 miles in length, though at least one also has a short loop. There really isn't a single trail that I'd say is accessible, though there are parts of trails I was able to access. That said, Whitewater in general isn't particularly wheelchair friendly other than in the more truly "public" areas. As an experienced wheelchair user, I doubt I'd head out on these trails alone. Whitewater hosts a variety of events throughout the year. While I wish it was more accessible here, I still consider this one of Indiana's more underappreciated natural gems.

This is not just any park...here is a little history: In the early 1940's, several Troy residents began clearing the river and the banks of rubbish in hopes of using the area for water activates. They even cleared away the remains of an old wooden damn located just north of the Adams St. Bridge. Then, Edward Alvah (E. A.) and William Hobart took an interest in the park and provided the heavy equipment needed to assist in the process of clearing. That's right...E.A and William Hobart of the Hobart Brothers Corporation. The Hobart Corporation used to be based in Troy, Ohio. Yes, that's right...the ones that created and made Kitchenaid for the home and for commercial use...and they are still made today (just not here). Let us not forget the welders, generators and industrial equipment as well to name a few. They weren't always made in a foreign country. Indeed, Hobart was alive and well in Troy, Ohio and the surrounding area once upon a time. The Corporation put quite the thumbprint on Troy, this is one of them. The leaders of the Hobart Brothers Corporation wanted to provide a location for not only boating enthusiasts, but also for their employees to enjoy the Great Miami River and all activities related to water. So, they constructed a marina, a boathouse, and a launch area with a lighthouse all from the profits of the company. At one time there was a baseball diamond located here and playground equipment as well. The place boomed with boating activities, festivals and company picnics for many years. My grandparents and parents used to speak of the fun times here. In the 1960's, E.A. Hobart gave the boathouse and property to the city of Troy as a gift. Troy accepted and decided it had great recreational potential. It has been utilized in many ways over the years. It has even seen days of non-use and dilapidation as well sadly. Some of my fondest memories growing up were playing out on the island after crossing a bridge...and we always fed the ducks. I used to love to ride my bike down that steep hill coming in and lift my legs & feet off the peddles. We used to rent canoes and paddle boats below...sweet memories. But what was once old, is new again. It brings me tears of joy to see this place come alive again and alive it is indeed. This place not only has its own website now, but it has a Facebook page too! There is a fairly new restaurant in the building called "Smith's Boathouse". The Smith family has a history of their own. I went to school with one of the brothers and was able to enjoy the family restaurant in Maui (Yummy). It is a great addition to the Park. And if you get a chance, please check it out. But not only that, there is now an area for concerts in addition to the typical walks, playing, biking, picnicking or just hanging out and enjoying the view. There is quite the venue these days at Treasure Island. It makes me smile that it is alive again. Although people call it "new", please don't forget the history, how it started, why it's here and how it has evolved. When in Troy...stop down...a water activity may interest you, a stroll, a bike ride...or maybe just the view. These are only a few things you can do there...there is something for everyone...to include finding that special spot for peace and quiet. http://www.troyohio.gov/587/Treasure-Island-Park https://www.facebook.com/pages/Treasure-Island-Park/142286295802726
