I've danced at a few other halau before coming to Pi'ilani, and I can say that my experience here has been the best by far. Every person I've had the pleasure of meeting and befriending here has been extremely warm and welcoming from day 1. It is truly a friendly and supportive group to be a part of, and I felt right at home after my first practice. Kumu Kanani is a an outstanding instructor, and creates such a lovely environment for the aloha spirit to spread. In the past year, I've been so happy to consistently learn many new dances each month, make great friends, study oli and olelo, and have gotten to dance at the annual Crab Feed. This is a wonderful halau to study and advance your Hawaiian knowledge, hula dance, and Hawaiian language. I only have positive comments to share! Mahalo Halau 'O Pi'ilani!!

We've been part of the halau for a couple of years now and just love it. We have two in the keiki (kid) class. Kumu is amazing and so are all of the aunties and uncles who help out. Zoom classes took some getting used to but have worked out very well during the pandemic. Hopefully we can see everybody in person again soon!

There was a line outside as they didn't begin admitting attendees until 5-10 minutes before showtime. And the show didn't start on time, rather 15 minutes after the listed time on the tickets. Then a 20-minute intermission an hour into the program. The cute sets on stage and cozy auditorium setting created an intimate environment ideal for this entertaining musical production. Just a single level of auditorium seating made up of standard folding seats, which were comfy enough, provided great views from anywhere. The sound and lighting in the theater were excellent too. Good quality, placement, and output, allowing for an enjoyable experience the audience could appreciate. No photography was allowed during the performance. The concessions stand offered chips, candy, wine, and beer including four types of the belgium voodoo ranger brand. We got the danger beach IPA, along with a glass of the cabernet which was served in a plastic cup with a lid, and we were able to bring our drinks to our seats in the auditorium. We had a positive experience overall.

Saw Sister Act last month. In line for Ladies Room one woman had toilet paper in hand as she'd been warned. Luckily my pal and I brought our own as well. Sure enough, the ONE STALL that was in operation was out of toilet paper. Maybe that stall is inoperable because women were using paper towel instead of what should be provided!!!? SO the 2 times my friend attended productions there - no TP! Can the center please keep this product available for replenishing during the run of their shows??? Show darling, seats uncomfortable.

It comes up really fast on your GPS so be careful when you go through the light but you basically turn right into the parking lot. There was not much parking, considering the show was sold out to see the descendants, so I heard some people had to park farther away in the neighborhood and walk in. Once you walk in, there's an open auditorium theater or open area where you could buy snacks and get candid pictures with the cast. As I walked further down the hallway to my seat, I noticed how lit everything was and organized and clean. Everything was set up. The rose were pretty so I'm glad I'm only 5'2" tall, but a 6 foot tall person would probably have some issues sitting in these chairs. I have never heard of this play before, yet my dad and brother knew it very well within the psychologically realm. Lol, As I listened to the play, there were a number of quotes I had actually heard when I was studying different theories within existentialism so it brought me back to my old college days! Lol A very small cast, but so well acted, especially the amazing rant that the character, lucky does was almost like a wrap! I honestly wish I had tape recorded or at least the audio of that because he said so many amazing quotes and Mantras of life. I wish I could've repeated any of them! My brain could not process everything so quickly but goodness well played!! The seats were a bit rickety, but they were still comfortable, and the play itself was not too cold luckily for me since I'm always freezing! Lol I also had a jacket handy, just in case. It was a cold overcast day, and the wind picked up, but everything inside the theater was pleasant. I wouldn't mind coming back and seeing a couple other plays especially the musical number ! This particular was about 2 1/2 hours long so at the last 30 minutes of the play, sadly my dad's phone rang since we were late for our dinner reservation! Lol, so I wish we knew how long the play was going to be before we made dinner plans. Lol.

Super amateur and uncomfortable…read more Dropped by here on a lark because I saw a sign advertising their production of "Cabaret" at a local restaurant and I've been meaning to see the Robert Altman film. 95% of the audience were Boomers who are probably bored out of their minds and desperate for any diversion from waiting for the sweet release of death. The other 5% were presumably friends of the cast. Basically all the actors were failure-to-launch white guys in their 30s, along with a few plus-sized Hispanic and Asian actresses. One actress was an attractive white girl, which confused me so badly that I assume she must have been somehow blackmailed into being part of the play. Nobody seemed to be having any fun, the laughter felt forced, the costumes and make-up were garish, and the playbill lacked any context for the story. I feel vaguely like I was rubbernecking the end of Western civilization, where young whites (who are a minority of young Americans) put on a half-hearted charade for their grandparents to try and maintain the illusion that the world they lived in still exists. As the Boomers pass away over the next decade, I expect all these local theater companies to shut down. The aforementioned attractive white girl and an acrobatic gay white guy seemed to actually be trying, which I appreciated, but their efforts weren't enough to salvage the play from all the others phoning it in. I'm glad I walked out a half-hour in. I wish I could get my money back. This may have permanently put me off from live theater lol.

El Capitan in Yosemite? No the one in Sunnyvale at Fremont High School's Shannon Theatre…read more The Lyric Theatre through its Discovery Series, was presenting John Philip Sousa's "El Capitan" , first performed in 1896, and hasn't been performed in Northern California in maybe a century. The play was performed at Fremont High School's Shannon Theatre in Sunnyvale, about a mile from my house -the main reason for going there! It's a Saturday night, and we arrive at 7:15pm, 45 minutes before show time, to the staff parking lot, almost full with cars from the 35 member Orchestra, and the numerous people involved in the production of the play. Those who arrive too late, will have to go around the block, and park in the student's parking lot, some 200 yards away. Sign on the door says seating capacity 324, so you know this is going to be a small theatre. Most of the seats on the two aisles are taken, and it doesn't take long to see why. The seats are designed for high school students. Now when I attended Berkeley High School in 1966-1969, I was 40 pounds lighter, and had a waistline 8 inches smaller. Let's just say these seats were a bit too cozy. You had to stand up, to let people pass by in the same row. Carpeted aisles, with a gentle slope. Non staggered seating -the head of the person in front of you will block your view of the stage. Seat next to my wife is empty, until someone moves from a seat with a view obstructed by a tall person directly in front. Balcony area taken up with lighting fixtures. The first few rows are below stage level, so you are looking upwards. There is no room for the orchestra except on the stage, and there are 35 people playing in the orchestra, taking up 80% of the stage area. Decent orchestra music. The costumes for the actors are pretty plain, considering this takes place in 18th century Peru, with Spanish knights in shining armor, and very exuberant costumes of the day. Many of the main actors read their lines from electronic tablets or small paper notebooks. At $26 per adult, I expected better. Persons under 18 paid $10, but few of them in the audience, despite the give away price. Two intermissions, and every one runs out the door to get relief from the suffocating heat -no air conditioning, and no air movement, in late July. Long line at the single drinking fountain. 324 people and two bathrooms, one for each gender, each with 2 toilets, or 1 toilet and 1 urinal, or 1 toilet per 81 persons -not up to airline standards, let alone army standards! Overhead lighting with words in clear English, translated from the heavy opera type songs. At the end of the play, we make a quick getaway to our car, parked facing outwards, and out of the parking lot in record time. Others in the student parking lot, have a 4 minute+ walk to their cars. Remind me never to attend a show at a high school again, and now we know why "El Capitan" hasn't been performed in Northern California in a century. Good music, but it won't be missed! .
