My 9-year-old daughter attended Dance Affair Studio and performed in their Winter Recital of 2025, and I couldn't have been more impressed. From the moment we walked in, it was clear how supportive, organized, and professional the staff and instructors are. The instructors do an incredible job of balancing discipline with encouragement, helping the kids build confidence while genuinely enjoying what they're doing. This is a great dance studio that provides a very personal and caring experience. My daughter did some classes here and then tried a bigger local chain dance studio (because of schedule conflict) and what a difference that was: No one there knew her name, the teachers changed frequently and the feeling was that of a money grab. We returned to Dance Affair because it is the exact opposite! We get personalized feedback and recommendations on what next level classes would be. I get a feeling that the owners and teachers really care about my daughter's development. The price is on point. Parking is great and easy. The class- my 3 yro had a blast! Why the 3 stars? .. We signed up for a trial class, my 3 yro and my 3 yro niece. They didn't give us our paperwork to sign until the class was starting even though they told us to arrive early for it which we did. They make you watch in a tv and you can barely see. The biggest kicker- they don't allow you to come in. Only for the trial class. Once you sign up they have someone take your child into class for you. You can't come in. You have to watch on zoom. I'm not comfortable with that for a 3yro. When I voiced being uncomfortable about it they did say they do allow you upstairs for some class times but not others. Idk seems weird. It was my nieces first experience with dance and she was nervous and they didn't allow any acclimation time, they actually even shut the door on her so they could begin class so she just sat outside the door. This weekend was the year end recital of her dance studio, The Dance Affair, in San Jose. It was a 2 hour extravaganza with varied acts featuring 3 year olds who look just adorable in their costumes to 18 year olds who are graduating and heading off to college. There were over 150 dance students and their parents with cameras ready to document their stage debuts. My daughter and her class mates were adorable (yes I am biased!). They knew their steps, were in sync and most of all were confident. Erica Fairfield, school founder and her entire staff (including her daughter, Indie) are excellent. They are the epitome of patient. Like pied pipers, they magically lead all these energetic kids into learning tap, jazz and ballet while having fun. My daughter simply loves her class and wishes she could spend every free moment there. I remember the first day we took classes there and that I had to pry her clinging hands and feet off my leg. Now after several years, she hops up the stairs and into class without looking back. My baby is growing up. (Aw shucks!) I can not sing their praises enough. Thanks Erica and Team! read more

The dance studio offers classes for all ages from 18 months (mommy & me) to adult. My daughter began taking summer classes last year and loved it so much that we signed her up for the pre-ballet and kiddie kombo (tap/ballet/tumbling) classes for the 2015/16 session. We're gearing up for the 2016 Spring show and she's excited about wearing the costumes and performing on stage. The cost of costumes and tickets is additional, but the children are getting the opportunity to perform on a professional stage. Participating in the show isn't mandatory though. However, I think it's really the highlight of the experience. All of the classes from pre-k to adult will be performing various routines. The studio is upstairs in a small building, but has a good-sized waiting area with monitors that display the classes. There aren't any windows facing the waiting area, but I think this is to the benefit of the dancers - it's less distracting. The instructors are friendly, but still provide actual instruction to the little ones. Sometimes, there are pre-teen/teen dancers helping the instructors with the little ones, which helps keep the kids focused. In addition to teaching dance terminology, ballet positions, and routines, the instructors reinforce early learning concepts such as direction (left-right, forward-backward, etc.), gross motor skills, and social skills. My favorite part is that my daughter is having fun and I do really love the mini-routines the kids perform for the parents every few months at the end of class. My daughter has been dancing at Dance Affair for 4 years now. Every year she comes home begging to take more classes the next year. I find that dance affair continues to instill confidence in my daughter and she not only grows as a dance, but as a friend, a student, a daughter and role model. Every year the staff works so hard to create the most magical show ever. Even the small little three year old kids hit the stage and impress the audience. We are very thankful for all the teachers here and are so glad to be a part of the dance affair family. We started with Miss Erika & Miss Indie a few months ago & my 4 year old twins LOVE it! It is such wonderful place to learn dance & have fun. My girls have taken gymnastics & other movement classes. I thought it was time we moved on to actual 'lessons'. Miss Indie is a great teacher & the kids have so much fun they don't even realize they are learning a dance! Her goal is to get her 15 year trophy when she gradutes from high school:) The facility and staff are very professional, but also very friendly and inclusive of all levels of experience and ability. A great time is had by all at the annual recital, and there are some fun little dance outs to get everyone ready for dancing in front of an audience. This review is for a birthday party, may not be reflective of actual dance classes. If you are considering them for a party, please read on. We were guests of a toddler party, hosting kids in the 2-4 range. I can see what they had going working for 8 yr+ kids, but NOT young children. The reasons I found it to be a far less than ideal place and space for a party include: -up a super steep flight of stairs. This means moms with strollers (ie 2nd kid) had to lug everything across the parking lot and up without access to a stroller. Also applies to lugging party set up supplies. -these same super steep stairs were perilous and had me worried the whole time a kid was going to fall down them, esp with sibling babies crawling around on the floor. There is a gate to "close off," but with people coming and going to was not always closed. I kept my kids on the far side away from it. -Parents ARE NOT ALLOWED under any circumstances. This means if a timid kid doesnt want to go inside the room with strangers and CLOSE the door completely, they just stay outside with you in the "observation room." -Said observation room includes NO OBSERVING. There is no glass panel or similar to view in. There is a tiny window on the top of the door, and a fuzzy tiny tv with poor picture quality and no sound. As a parent, you have no idea what is going on inside. -The kids "lessons" seemed overly structured for this age group and many of the kids had trouble following along/following directions. I could not hear, but my 3 yr old came out upset and even when we got home was telling me about what her "teacher" was telling them "not to do" or "was bad." -The 2nd half of the "activity" the instructors thought they could actually teach this group a choreographed dance!!!!! HA! It would have been hilarious if it wasnt so sad. They wanted tiny kids to memorize multiple 8-count worth of moves, at live speed to music. Are you insane? This is the most unrealistic thing you could ever possibly expect this age group to do. -They also did tumbling, which this group was not prepared for either. Multiple kids cried and hurt their head trying to do a summersault. -The "party room" is a large hallway which they squeeze a long table into. It is a cramped space and there is no real place for parents to wait outside the room. It was certainly not an ideal party space and adults crowded around and bumped into each other milling about as our kids were inside without us. Overall, we were excited to just get out of there at the end, and certainly wont be back. I hope the instructors that work with this age group during regular classes are not the ones who ran the party. The girls were telling the kids to "remember to listen!" and "follow directions!" like they were talking to 10-year-olds who knew what a ballet or music class was like. They need a serious reality check if they want to continue to run parties for this age range. read more

My 3 year old daughter is in the tap/ballet class and she loves it. Ms. Erica and Ms. Indie are really good with the little ones they encourage them and make them feel comfortable. This is her first year round class but she started in the 6 weeks summer session which is the best thing to do as a trial if you're not sure that the school or dance is for your child. Obviously we were satisfied with the summer session we went ahead and signed her up for the long run. Thoughout the year they perform small routines to show the parents and to get the children comfortable performing in front of an audience. The main performance is the annual end of the year recital which happens in June. Can't wait to see it. Love it! My daughter just finished the summer session for kiddie combo (tap/ballet/tumbling). I have to say our experience was great and I highly recommend this studio for your kiddos. My daughter would just finish the dance class and ask to go again. The music, songs, the teachers are all great, they knew my daughters name by the second class. The last class the parents got to go in and see the kids dance to their songs and my daughter just loved it. She also loved the sticker she would get after each class. We are moving out of the area or I would have signed her up for the year. I hope I can find a dance studio like this one again. Totally worth it. read more

Wow. What a find. We hosted our 6 year old daughter's birthday party at Dance Affair. The owner, Erica Fairfield, is a fantastic person - very nice and courteous. We went with the package where they took care of everything - decorations, cake, snack, goodie bags, a craft activity for the kids, and of course, the dancing. All arrangements were done very nicely, and it was obvious that Erica had paid attention to all details. The kids had a blast, and the adults had a nice relaxing time. My daughter is just finishing her first year at this studio. She has had fun and learned a lot, but the experience is not what we expected. If you just want your kid to learn dance, and do a low-key recital, this is not the place for you. If you want the full-on sequined costume, make-up, polished professionally-produced performance experience, then this is where you need to be. We, unfortunately, fall in the former category. We signed up for a tap/ballet/jazz combo class, and I don't think they have done any ballet or jazz in six or seven months because the recital routines were choreographed in tap, and that is all they do. At our previous dance school, the end-of-year routine meant wearing your class uniform and dancing on a middle-school auditorium stage. Tickets were $10, some kids wore make-up, but it was not required. The recitals were broken up by age groups and dance styles, so the crowds weren't huge and the performance didn't take very long. At Dance Affair, we were required to buy costumes that total almost $100 (custom sequined costume, ordered 6 months in advance, tights, make-up) and the tickets for the recital are $22-40 each, depending on row and quantity (plus convenience fee). There was a mandatory blocking rehearsal last Saturday that involved two 20 minute rehearsals, separated by a 3 hour gap. Aside from blowing a whole Saturday afternoon, there was no place for parents to wait, except outside in the 100 degree heat. And maybe I'm weird, but I am not okay with putting heavy make-up and bright red lipstick on my 8 year-old girl. It makes me uncomfortable. I tried to go with light make-up for the pictures, but she cried when I started putting it on! (They book a photo studio for a whole day and the girls get a group picture taken, with the opportunity to do individual pictures as well.) I don't think it is fair to require kids to wear make-up, even on a stage. And I have seen no encouragement for the boys to wear make-up. While the staff is kind and professional, the billing is easy, the facilities are safe and clean, and I love the shoe exchange policy, we will not be back. We just wanted a studio where my daughter could learn dance, but this seems to be more of a machine geared toward producing this one huge event (there is a holiday show and other small events, as well) with professional costumes in the SJ Center for Performing Arts. (Our 3 tickets cost $113) Dance is not our life, so we will be looking for someplace else next year. read more

My child has been a part of the Dance Affair family for the past 10 years. She has learned a variety of dance styles that include Hip Hop, Lyrical, Jazz, Tap, and Contemporary to name a few. Ms. Erica, Ms. Indie and their staff are AMAZING!! They not only take the time to teach dance styles but they also put on an extremely entertaining recital at the Center of Performing Arts every year. It is on this stage that my daughter and the rest of the students realize their confidence as they perform for a sold out crowd. The owner is always working her best to be active with the community.
