A quick follow-up to my previous review. The orthodontics was outstanding for my two children. Extremely efficient service in every aspect, and most importantly my children were thrilled with their new smiles. There was also a glitch with an overcharge to my monthly payment schedule that was briefly frustrating. However, I recently received a personal card from Dr. Hulse with an apology for the error and a free month of compensation. So happy with our experience at Hulse. They don't even charge you for all the visits before the braces actually go on. I started bringing my daughter there in 5th grade and they were always honest, telling me that her teeth weren't ready for braces yet. They take photos and track her progress free of charge until they felt she was ready. So many many many years ago I had braces for three years. Fast forward to life in my 40's - I knew my teeth had shifted over time, but I wasn't too worried as the aesthetics were still fine. I was dismayed to discover though that my shifted bite was putting pressure in the wrong places and causing irreparable damage to my gums! If I didn't want a future with gum transplant surgery in it (Yikes! Don't want this!) then I had to do something and FAST to stop the damage from progressing. Enter Dr. Hulse and his fantastic staff team! I wanted to fix my bite, not look like I was wearing braces, and have them off in time for a family wedding I'm attending - and I wanted it all done yesterday! Dr. Hulse carefully crafted a plan that would address all of these concerns - plus a total bonus - he made my "fine" smile look AMAZING! There were never any expensive surprises, and it was obvious as we went through this process that Dr. Hulse was very up on all the latest information and technological advances. My daughter is now going there, and my son will when he is ready. I'm looking forward to having these folks working on our mouths for years to come! I haven't ever written a yelp review before, but I have been so please with all aspects of the service there, that I just had to. The appearance of the office is inviting and so are all of the staff members. I haven't come across one person who works there who wasn't warm and friendly. They instantly put my 8 year old at ease. She actually looks forward to her appointments and was mad at me when I had to reschedule her last appointment :) It was all she could talk about, which shows that her experiences there are pleasant and possibly exciting?! :) As far as the orthodontic part goes, Dr. Hulse is very honest. I didn't feel like he was trying to have me upgrade or do something that wasn't necessary. Everything was clearly explained to me and I trusted him so much, that I never went for the second consult I had set up. We signed up with Hulse on the spot! My daughter's teeth are proof that he knows what he is doing. Her two front teeth were literally in the shape of the letter V. We tried telling her that she was special because her teeth made a V for her name, Ava. Ha! To our surprise, literally in just weeks, the V was nearly straightened out. She hasn't had any problems with pain, wire issues, etc. I wouldn't recommend anywhere else and find myself trying to tell my friends who are at a different orthodontist to switch! read more

Holy Moly!!! Is there an option for a 6th Star? Because for businesses like Hulse Orthodontics there should be. Firstly, Dr. Hulse is one of the kindest most down to earth doctors I've ever met. He is amazing with children. His staff is first rate. And the office is one of the nicest in SD. It smells amazing, it's super clean and has all the amenities an entire family would want. Teeth cleaning station, open floor plan, bean bag chairs, and an arcade. Where was he when I was in need of braces? Hulse Orthodontics is wonderful! I've had a lot of dental experience and his is one of the best I've ever had. The office is clean and very nice inside. I had an appointment a few days after the wildfires and though his office suffered severe water damage from the fire department spraying it (the office was surrounded on three sides by the fire) it was still cleaner than some I've been to elsewhere. The everyone there was always courteous, friendly and professional and I can think of no time when that wasn't the case. I showed up once with my daughter and she was encouraged to watch and also "help" by holding a light so she could see in my mouth. I felt odd but she really enjoyed it. My trip time to get to the office is less then five minutes so I was always on time and noticed that I never waited more than two minutes before I was retrieved and went in to a chair to get started. The billing was explained clearly and I was given a number of options which was also well done. I did have one emergency when my band broke and they squeezed me into the current schedule immediately because Maddie or Araianna decided to take a short lunch. Awesome, thank you for that and sorry I can't remember exactly who it was! Dr. Hulse is a great person to talk to and he's willing to work with any issue I had including moving out of the area much earlier than anticipated and also having to have major dentistry (a crown because I managed to crush another tooth) during treatment. He is very flexible and quite personable and genuine. I've never had a bad or even off-putting experience at Hulse Orthodontics and would recommend them without hesitation to anyone who is considering their service. read more

The reason why we *didn't* have a great experience at Hulse was for a few reasons. First, we found out our daughter had an impacted canine tooth (growing in the upper gum area, above one of her current canine teeth). He told us we needed to go have a 3D X-ray done at an oral surgeon's place not far from his office, since he didn't have that type of machine. Over $200 later (which of course insurance did not cover any of), Dr. Hulse gave us 2 options. 1) have oral surgery done (which included putting her under (scary!), cutting all the way up into her gums to expose the tooth, putting a bracket and chain onto the tooth to "try" and help the tooth down...which he said was a 50/50 chance that it would even work. If you haven't seen how gross and scary this looks, feel free to Google "impacted canine surgery" and get ready to vomit"). His other option 2) was to PULL the tooth and just "close the gap with braces". I said "umm, but that's her canine tooth, not only important for chewing, etc, but look-wise, won't it be odd to be missing a tooth?". He said "We can just shave it down to LOOK like a canine.". BOTH of these options left me with an uncomfortable and uneasy pit in my stomach. Neither choice sounded good and I didn't have a good feeling. On top of that, when we were there for the appointment, we waited quite some time to see him (his assistants were nice, but seemed almost like a used car sales pitch where they tried to say anything to rope you in to being a customer), and when he did talk to us and come in, it felt very much like he could care less or didn't have time to see us (very rushed). Instead of giving more information on things like the process, the impacted canine, etc, his assistant just kept showing my daughter all of the rubberband colors...which I feel like was just their way to get kids to want to go there (just like their "arcade"). Even weeks/months after, they called multiple times (like annoying sales people) trying to ask when we were coming to get her braces put on. Of course kids love it there because it's "fun", but honestly, who has time to go sit and play in an arcade anyway if you are there for an appointment (and good luck getting them out after, when you have places you need to be). We went there because we have friends who go there and have had great experiences, BUT unfortunately for us, this was not the case. I wanted to share my experience. IF we would have gone with Hulse and done the oral surgery through the oral surgeon he recommended, it would have cost us between $8-9k! I'm sure Hulse is fine is your child just needs the regular braces, but if your child has any other issues, i'd suggest getting a second opinion like we did. We saved ourselves making the mistake of doing a gutwrenching and painful surgery, or an unneeded pulled/missing tooth for life....AND thousands of dollars. Our daughter's tooth came down on it's own, and she'll be getting her braces off of her perfect teeth next month thanks to another local dentist (who I won't name, because I don't want people to think i'm just out to give someone else business).....which was a LOT cheaper. read more

I just got my braces off yesterday and I couldn't be more pleased. My teeth look better than I could've ever imagined. Initially, I had another orthodontics consultation in the area but the choice to select Dr. Hulse as my orthodontics was effortless. Dr. Hulse's knowledge, confidence, compassion, treatment plan/length, cost, friendly staff, location, and evening hours all made it so easy. His office is nicely decorated with pictures of actual clients. You can tell his practice is very involved with the community. There are also some video games in the front lobby area for the kids; just a fun place to be. As an adult patient, I felt his care was consistently excellent from a to z. I never had to miss work because of evening hours available. Every single member of his team is professional, caring, and you always feel welcomed. They have rewards program which allows for chances to win gifts cards or have $ donated to a charity listed. I could tell how kids would love this. I rarely waited long to be seen. I highly recommend Dr. Hulse for your orthodontics services. Just have a consult, and you'll see it for yourself. I have three kids in braces my first one was at another orthodontist western dental San Marcos was the worst experience he was in braces for longer then I think he even needed to be, had extra procedures that were so painful they over charged and if you have appt doesn't matter be ready to be there for hours or all day I would take a day off work sometimes knowing he had to go in. My next two Sons I decided I had to go somewhere eles I asked around and read reviews found Hulse Orthodontist it's been the easiest and best experience. We went here today for a second opinion after an orthodontist suggested that our daughter get braces. I was so impressed by the entire operation there.
