I heard such good things about Human Kanvas. My daughter went there for tattoo, and it looked great. My experience however was less than great. I was quoted $900 for a band of thorns and said it would take him 4 to 5 hours to complete. This isn't my first rodeo. Needless to say I never got it done. I'm disappointed. I came in after emailing Sean (aka SAGA) as he has a unique style that incorporates realism and watercolour (from my exploration - pretty rare to find in Calgary). Sean was professional and worked hard to create a tattoo design that I loved, he took my input and together we came up with a really sick tattoo of an owl and dandelions, with his signature geometric hexagons. Sean worked on my leg for about 6 hours with a few breaks, he was focused and it turned out AMAZING. So impressed with his work and his professionalism. read more

You can get a piercing a lot of places these days, and over the years i've put more than a few holes in my head.... I've also learnt a thing or two about how big a difference quality jewelry makes in healing and how much it sucks when your new awesome labret is off centre and not pierced straight, but I digress... I've been into all 3 Human Kanvas shops between yyc and airdrie. I've found them all friendly and willing to chat and explain things. Rachel the apprentice in airdrie pierced my tragus under supervision while everything was explained to me. I know apprentices are learning, but she was more knowledgable, calm, and competent than a lot of "professionals" i've seen at other shops... The piercing is great! They use better quality metal (not all "surgical steel" is the same, the cheaper stuff itches like crazy but this new one feels great) I know sometimes you have to make appointments ahead of time because they are booked up for the day, but hey, they are booked up because they are good! Don't go somewhere else and be sad and then have come here to fix it later... Just come here first! read more

Worst tattoo parlor in the city. Went to this place several years ago for a tattoo I designed myself. It was a tribal design and my lines were very clean and nice, and it was drawn to scale in the desired colours (this becomes important later). I booked my tattoo with a male artist (I don't recall his name) and at this point all seemed fine. Day of my appointment arrives. I was a few minutes late so I was a bit flustered, and this plays into the next part. The owner - Brandi Lee - who had zero artistic credentials, just a business degree from Mount Royal, takes me to a room and has me sit down, preps me for my tattoo. She came back after a few moments and set to work, but not before I asked "Where's the guy I booked with?" At NO POINT before or up to this time was I informed that the tattoo artist I booked with originally was unavailable. At no point was I told that he went home early due to back pain (something I could have been told before I arrived). At no point was I asked if I'd be okay with Brandi doing my tattoo, nor was I shown any samples of her work. She just assumed I'd be cool with it. So this is already highly unprofessional, but it gets worse. After she was done, I was disappointed to see that she had done a horrible job. She made the lines all janky and crooked and the dots in the design were the wrong size or shape. Sometimes the black outline (the inside was red) was too thick or too thin in odd and random places. It was bad, but I tried to convince myself I liked it because it was already on my body. I didn't. I should have asked to see Brandi's work before letting her do ANYTHING, but keep in mind I was nervous, 20 years old, and this was my first tattoo. I saw samples of her work too late, after the fact, and it was horrifying. She did tattoos that looked like they were drawn by a toddler, and proudly proclaimed that they were HER designs when asked. If you decide to go here, I highly recommend staying away from any work Brandi does. She's incredibly unprofessional and it shows in how she handled my appointment and in the work she did. I am still in the process of getting her janky tattoo removed, which is very expensive and painful. read more

This place has probably been the worst place I've ever had a piercing done at. ( I have numerous piercings ) First off ill start off with the staff. I had gotten my helix pierced 3 times. The girl who did it wasn't overly friendly and gave me really bad advice. Months went by and my ears were still really sore and crusty. Months later one had started to reject and they were all migrating and looked off. When I went to go get the one taken out it had rejected so bad that I could see the barbell through my ear, the next piercer who took it out said that the lady who pierced it left and she was really sorry and told me then that the other two would heal. It didn't. And the next time I went in there ANOTHER piercer told me that the initial girl who pierced my ears did it wrong AND got fired. Are you kidding me ?? Fired ? Pierced my ear wrong ? She also said it would have NEVER healed. Well that's great 150$ down the shit hole. No offers of my money back or nothing. Not only was that dangerous but it wasn't my bodies fault it was the piercers. I had been lied to and went through months of pain and now my ear is scarred badly. Worst place to get piercings I DONT recommend for anyone to go there. The staff was a bunch of rude snotty women who don't know what there doing. read more

The people are super nice and helpful and the shop is very clean, but my piercing was done incorrectly which after insanely careful care, was not healing on the inside of the lip. I got a labret done in July, it is now December and a large keloid formed inside my lip and started getting larger. I regularly did salt water rinses with the correct amount of salt to water. Tried their special wound spray as well. I was informed that the angle of the piercing was affecting it's healing, and that the placement was not good either as it was directly infront of my eye tooth. Not happy on the time I wasted and money I wasted on different jewelry to resolve the issue, and having to remove the piercing in the end. read more

I tried to come to this tattoo parlour after my friend recommended it to me after a wonderful experience last year. I arrived 20 minutes prior to opening on walk-in day and waited to go in as I didn't want to be inappropriate. One couple walked in before opening and moments later they opened the store for business. We went in and explained that I only wanted a small tattoo no more than an inch big. They told us they only had 1 tattoo artist on and that the next appointment available would be at 1pm when the mentor to their apprentice came in. We left to kill time for an hour before receiving a call that I wouldn't be able to get my tattoo until 3:30. I asked why it was to take so long and they told me that the first person in the door had a larger tattoo that would take 4 hours and the mentor had been delayed from coming in. Honestly this service is appalling. I was under the impression that walk-in day was only for small tattoos and larger tattoos should be booked on separate days with a consult. I cannot believe that this tattoo that was to take 4 hours was bumped ahead of my tattoo that was supposed to take 15 minutes. I will never be returning to this parlour and I will never recommend it to any of my friends. read more

I went into the NE Calgary location with my boyfriend for scalpelling done by Kailey. I had gotten mine done a week before and he was really jealous of how good they looked. I have no complaints about Kailey and Brooke they're a great duo and my scalpelling is healing great same with my boyfriend's. BUT as I was waiting for him while he was getting his ears done a client came in to meet an artist for a tattoo. When the artist started talking to the customer I got really uncomfortable. He sounded stoned, and he visibly and audibly did NOT care about doing this tattoo and was being fairly rude to the customer. He left her standing there and rudely told her to follow and he seemed so annoyed just from her walking in. I have NEVER seen an artist treat a client this way and it made me VERY uncomfortable. I recommend Kailey and Brooke for piercings as they made my first piercing a great and fun experience but I don't recommend them for tattoos read more

In addition, he did a great job of making sure all our piercings were perfectly placed and very well done. I will be coming back for future piercings for sure. Went to the shop in Airdrie with supposedly the best artist they have....... what was supposed to be a full sleeve and half chest was changed by the artist to a 2 hour quick job. The entire time he complained about how busy he was and bragged that he's the fastest black and grey guy around. The end result was a horrific mess that I have spent thousands covering up! read more

Came in to check out this shop, I'm from BC and I had such a shitty "vibing" out about asking questions about getting my neck tattooed. The lady talking to me was so incredibly rude and condescending in regards to the fact that "hand and neck tattoos are EARNED and you've obviously not earned the right to have yours" as in that my hands weren't tattooed yet. I came into this shop fully covered, as I had just gotten off work. Yes, my work isn't visible when i'm wearing long sleeves and pants, but I have a full back piece and my entire chest and stomach tattooed. I find out the lady i'm speaking to is Brandy Lee, the owner. What a horrible experience. I've never felt so judged or unwelcome in a tattoo shop in my LIFE. My bad for coming in after work in covered clothing. I RARELY take time to do anything like leave reviews online and had to create this JUST to tell this lady that I'm sure she's been judged a few times in her life, and I thought I was a welcome, paying customer. Unless you want snotty, snarky stuck up attitudes from the owner HERSELF, I do NOT recommend trying to get tattooed at Human Kanvas. What a disappointment. read more

I won't even give them one star for how bad customer service they have; filled with rude people. I had my appointment today at 3:30 which was confirmed by the receptionist John, at exactly 2:15 I left my house and my car broke down in the middle of the road due to snow and poor weather conditions it took me a while and I called them that I might be a bit late so the guy John said 'yeah no problem' as I told him how bad my situation was but I still made it around 4pm which is 30mins late. The girl jennele left the salon already and was enjoying in a Vietnamese restaurant. Anyway this extremely rude girl comes to the reception and tells me that jennele cannot do your tattoo as you are an hour late?? I was like what? An hour? And she said my appointment was at 3pm not 3:30, now I told her that I already confirmed my appointment 2days ago and John said 3:30.. she kept on giving me unreasonable excuses of how jennele cannot do my tattoo and it has to be rescheduled. I don't get it.. 1. She was rude 2. She had no manners 3. They literally don't know the meaning of customer service 4. She lied to me on my face about appointment timing After this disappointment I asked her to give my deposit back as I don't ever wanna come back here EVER! And she denied of that too.. I mean it's all their fault if she couldn't do the tattoo then she could have told me on the call when I told John I was gonna be late. They did nothing in my favour instead booked me on 7th feb two months from now. I have been to a lot of piercing and tattoo studios in my 45 years of getting work done, and I've never been so disrespected, talked down to or treated like I'm garbage like I have at Human Canvas. The owner literally provides no customer service and runs her businesses like sweatshops, of course she doesn't care if she's got ten subpar artists when they're all churning out tattoos. I went to get work done and was told that my work on my body wasn't consistent enough with the style of the artist I chose, and that Brandy would choose who I'd be getting my work done from. Ummm, no. I get that some artists like some styles of tattooing, but you don't get to tell me whom I'm getting tattooed by. The piercers who handled my booking and consultation were rude and unorganized. Asked about a large gauge segment ring and got laughed at, told to leave a deposit to order custom jewellery and I'd see it in six months (as they laughed) I don't usually go out of my way to leave a review, I don't really do the internet, but I logged into my kids google/yelp account and I felt it was necessary because truly, I wouldn't return to this studio if the tattoo were free! read more

I've attempted to get a tattoo a couple times now from this location and the ones in Airdrie. The first time, I contacted the Calgary store and talked to an intensely rude girl who seemed like she couldn't be bothered to answer my questions (as I'd never been to Human Kanvas before). The second instance, I emailed one of the Airdrie shops asking about walk ins/policies/etc and received no reply at all. I was looking for a great shop closer to my house than my normal Immaculate Concept (which I can't recommend enough!) but after extracting information from them being like pulling teeth, I'll just drive the extra ways and go see Adam Kathrens and Steve Peace. Their tattoos at Human Kanvas looked great, but I can't be bothered trying to procure one now. read more

Such a horrible experience. My friend and I both got our septums pierced on Saturday by Brandi. After going to work for the first time after being pierced I had multiple people tell me that my Septum piercing is crooked. Not the first thing you want to hear upon getting a new piercing. After this discovery I saw my friend and turns out her piercing, just as crooked. We both have crooked septum piercings. Thats exactly what we wanted to spend money on! I contaced Human Kanvas and spoke to the receptionist who was really kind but didnt really do much for me. She told me I would have to come in and see Brandi and she isn't available until December 12th, nearly a month from now!!! She did however let me know that she would contact me if anything comes up earlier however that doesn't really do much for me. I should have been transferred to the manager! My option was to take it out and get it re-pierced which she was unable to tell me if I would have to pay for. My first reaction was Are you kidding me! I was pierced crooked and now I have to pay you MORE to have my septum re-pierced, and fix a mistake that was not mine. What an outrage. Of course I shouldn't have to pay! I am so disappointed. Such a sketchy place! I work in the customer service industry at a high end salon, and let me tell you that is not how I would have handled the situation. No suggestions given other than to come and get my septum looked at when its completely healed and potentially give her more money to possibly pierce me crookedly again! If this is your career I would expect you to be super attentive and ensure that the piercing is straight! Two thumbs down. If I had more thumbs they would be down too, and if it wasn't mandatory for me to give one star they would receive zero! read more

I was super excited to get a tattoo from an artist that was at Human Kanvas. It was a fairly large project so I did a consult and put a deposit of $280 and then waited over 6 months to my appointment (which I was totally fine with). Unfortunately, after my first appointment, my job situation changed drastically and I was unable to continue with my appointments planned as each sitting was almost $600. As I had funds to do another appointment, I contacted the artist/shop to try and set up another appointment but since I was out of town, wasn't able to book another appointment that worked for both of our schedules. I continued to check in regularly, but never received any calls from the shop about last minute appointments or times I could come in. Almost a year goes by after my initial appointment, my artist contacts me to notify me she's accepted another position and is moving shops. We talk about my deposit and that the shop owner has the deposits paid to the shop, not the individual artist, therefore I'm required to get a refund/reimbursement from the shop. I reach out to the owner and she initially can't even produce any record of my deposit but offers me a gift card. I explain that a gift card is really not ideal as I live out of town and that a refund would be more appropriate given the circumstances. The owner then decided that my account was inactive and that I'm no longer eligible for any form of refund and was extremely unprofessional during the whole process, including making comments about her perceived by opinion about my ability to keep a job. I would not recommend Human Kanvas to anyone. If you do choose to use Human Kanvas, I encourage you to get copies of all their deposit policies as I was never provided any information until the time it worked in the owners financial best interest. read more

Got my first tattoo here so kind of a big deal. Was told that I would receive a free touch up if needed. I followed all instructions and it healed normally (no major problems) however I was not 100% satisfied with the end result and felt that I could use a touch up in some places. Went in and they looked at it and made all sorts of excuses for why I didn't need one and wanted to charge me for it! Very unhappy as one of my main reasons for choosing the place was because they said they would do a touch up on it. I am planning my second and third tattoo and will definitely not be going there for it. I have friends who have free touch ups for life on their tattoos. read more

I recently had my cheeks pierced by Kaylee and had an absolutely wonderful experience. She was kind personable and gentle and my cheeks are healing beautifully now! The prices are very reasonable :) The only downside is the table in the piercing room feels rickety, if they tighten up the bolts I would give this place five stars! An unbelievably disorganized, disrespectful and embarrassing tattoo business. About a month ago we went to the Saturday walk in- with 1 person in front of us. She wanted some simple writing. We (there were 3 of us wanting him tiny zodiac signs) were next in line and told we couldn't be helped until 2pm. Then a friend of one of the tattoo artists came in and she was helped immediately. (I thought appointments weren't allowed Saturday and it was first come first serve?? Interesting.) All we wanted were 3 small zodiac tattoos and we were told that even at 2 o'clock we wouldn't be out until 7pm at which at that point they'd be "closed". According to the receptionist/attitude and facial expressions, we were a waste of her time. We left and booked an appointment for a Sunday in September giving them the benefit of the doubt. A week prior (to our month in advance booked appointment) we called to confirm that all was well and the appointment was still a go. The day of 20 minutes prior to the appointment, we get a call from some man, (we were told upon confirmation a girl was doing it) saying that he was "cough cough, sick" and didn't have a steady hand. That's fantastic that you're sick. You just stay in bed and fix yourself right up since it sounds like you just woke up anyways. Sorry we had to bother you on your Sunday. I'm sure you have some amazing artists that have done some incredible tattoo work, but honestly, human Kanvas, you really suck and don't deserve any future customers at all since you have zero idea how to treat them. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Salvatore At Human Kanvas. My 14-year-old had her lip pierced. She was very nervous, but Salvatore's warm and friendly demeanor helped her remain calm. She was surprised at how quick and almost painless the piercing was. I had my Daith done. Best choice I have made in a long time. I went in with a serous headache which like most Calgarian's I suffer from regularly do to frequent the weather changes. Salvatore was wonderful at placing the piercing in just the right spot. Immediately following the needle being pushed through I felt a release of pressure and the radiating pain from the headache changed. It faded away completely by time I arrived home. The 10 seconds of pain from the piercing itself was well worth getting it done. Salvatore was easy to get along with and very knowledgeable about his line of work. Didn't actually get a tattoo here. My daughter and I wanted to go get a tattoo together. She finally had a Saturday off, and the website said that Saturdays and Sundays are walk in only. So we headed down to the Airdrie Yankee Valley location right at the opening time. When we got there, we were told that they didn't do walk ins at that location. Perhaps they should indicate that on the website. So we called the Calgary location, and were told that there were a couple of people there, but they could definitely help us out if we came right away...so we drove straight there (it was almost 30 minutes away). When we got there, we were told to come back at 2:30. Decided not to go back there...I prefer to go somewhere with better customer service. Thanks for wasting our time. read more

I got my tattoo done quite a while ago and never got around to writing a review so here it is. I came on a walk in day to check it out and there was quite a line up. When I got to the front they were only tattooing certain designs that day so I decided to book an appointment for later. Despite the crowd I got great customer service from one of the ladies there. She listened to my concerns, (I'd had a really bad experience at another tattoo shop) and suggested the best artist for what I wanted who was the lovely Deanna. I booked an appointment and gave the girl a sketch of what I wanted. When I came in the next day Deanna had redrawn my design (and absolutely put my drawing skills to shame) I was floored at the work she had put into it. She is a phenomenal artist and the colour and shading really pop in her work. She also has a great attitude and was very kind and understanding when things get painful! I recommend her all the time especially if you want a really sharp old school style. I would also like to add that my tattoo is now 2 years old and the colour is as solid and vibrant as the day I got it. Thank you Deanna! read more

I've used Human Kanvas before at their old NE location and it was fine. However, this time. Not impressed. Made an appointment online, yay for them having a great online booking system. I received an email and a text reminder prior to my appointment and showed up 5 minutes early. The artist booked, wasn't even there and I was informed he would not be there for another hour and a half. The guy at the desk said, "there's nothing I can do as an artist" which to me was reflective of how they run their shop - very unprofessionally. I told them that they sent me an email and text confirmation so that I would honor their time, and I expected the same in return. We took our business elsewhere. I think with how they run, they won't serve themselves well at all. If I can't trust you to run your business and represent yourself and your team professionally, I can't trust you to do your job professionally either. read more

If I could rate this shop a zero I would. Got two tattoos there, same artist. Was thoroughly impressed the first times I went. However, tried to get set up with a touch up appointment; which is offered up to six months, the artist was very passive on trying to make an appointment and then once one was set up I went in and got the first one touched up, I had to tap out of getting the second one and the artist offered the next day which was his day off so I was extrmemely grateful and so the next day I went back to get the second touched up. Both touch ups the artist was very uninterested more like I was a nusense versus a client. Fast forward to days later when I took the sani derm off my tattoo and realized he had changed the tattooo and instead of having these two circles white he changed them to teal without mentioning anything to me. I hesitated to mention it because I didn't want conflict so when I did I was EXTREMELY DISGUSTED that his reply to me was 'oh right because it's my art and I thought it looked cool' this guy had the audacity to tell me that; which in my opinion is absurd because it is MY BODY and the tattoo I now have in my body I do not like because the small changes he made really does change the tattoo I had originally consented too. Sad, because the shop was awesome and I thought his art was great but absolutely will not go back to him or the shop again. read more

BEWARE OF THIS P.O.S.!!!!!! HE'S MOVING TO BOSS TATTOOS. Hmm, where to begin with this ignorant self-obsessed a-hole who has very limited imagination as an artist and basically lacks decency as a human being. If you are thinking about getting a tattoo by this loser think again. The experience I had with him was BRUTAL. He gave me my first 'consult' (if you can call it that) in between tattoo'ing another client. It was MY mistake at that moment to go any further with this guy. If an artist does not give you the RESPECT of your time and undivided attention for a consult or while they are tattooing you - walk away. So to not get into all of the boring details of he said/she said I will try to summarize best I can. I sent him an email about a CONCEPT to see if it aligned with his style of artistry. The concept was explosive/bursting. Just to be clear, I am aware of his realism tattoo style because I have other tattoos by him on my skin. Just so we are clear. I understand, Saga. With the appointment date approaching I was scheduled for another consult to clarify my concept - to which I was open to his interpretation and sent him 'examples' at his request. I left work early for the consult and about 10 minutes away I thought I would contact him only to find he wasn't there. He didn't even call me to cancel so it cost me 2 hours of pay to leave work for NOTHING. He told me we would 'figure out the piece of work the day of your tattoo appointment'. I expressed my concern over this because I wanted to make sure firstly that my concept was something he could work with. Day of my appointment I show up only to be delivered with a piss poor attitude artist whining about his clients (3 cancelled on him that week....hmmmm I wonder why) to ANOTHER client (myself). You cannot paint everyone with the same brush. So, I tried relentlessly to offer solutions to make this tattoo work and he basically gave me no option but to walk out and lose my $400 deposit and half a days work (All in all that stupid day cost me almost a grand.). I even said 'fine, lets just do another flower' where he proceeded to tell me a flower would be the size of my head. Excuse me? He can't even BS his way out of that because he already DID 2 flowers on me and both together are about the size of my hand. As for his artistry - he traces. He doesn't add any personal touches worthy of mention. My friend is currently finishing up a tattoo with him and Saga can't even blend his own tattoos together in any interesting fashion. It's literally just blank spaces filled in with BLACK. You mize well just go dip yourself in black ink. Saga/Sean was confrontational from the moment I showed up. Making me not even excited to get a tattoo OR work with him. Not to mention, he spoke to me like I was a dumb bimbo who doesn't research her artists or didn't know annnnnything about tattoo'ing and he acted all high and mighty. I'm positive he will dig his own grave for his reputation because word of mouth goes a long way. And if i'm not the first person for this to happen to; like I said, he had 3 that week that 'walked out' on him; I certainly won't be the last. Saga, it's not your clients - it's YOU. FYI - I took this tattoo VERY seriously, more seriously than he did and so to have him being so condescending and rude was the icing on the cake. Don't bother with this guy. Thankfully he will NOT be at Human Kanvas soon and so I intend on going there because one artist shouldn't determine a shops value and the value just went UP (once he leaves). read more

I was told to go here and to see certain aritists, so I went to book an apppintment , when I arrived for my booked spot, biggest mistake . As soon as I walked in I didnt feel welcomed. This is by far the worst place you could go to get your tattoo done . They are very rude and push you into a design that will be permant on your body that you don't like and if you ask to change it they get frustrated with you and claim they don't have the time or the patience to assist you , so they ask you to rebook with another artist. I was also told that she has other clients to do , so I was being rushed as well and didn't appericiate it . If they didn't have time for me then I shouldn't have been booked and if she couldn't do the design I wanted or wasn't comfortable with it , all she had to do was tell me not be completely disrespectful .After the way I was talked to in the shop , I'm surprised she honestly thought I would be comimg back to book with someone else. I'm a paying customer and should get the respect I deserve . very unprofessional. I got up and I left there shop, I will not be going back or referring anyone to go here.
