The process of attempting to adopt a dog here, is unpleasant at best and heartbreaking at worst. There is one main point I want to get across with this review: I am not disappointed with WARL because I didn't get the dog I was hoping to adopt (I'm old enough to understand that life is not always fair). I AM, however, completely turned off by the adoption process at WARL and by the fact that not one person seemed to want to help us along in the process or make things even slightly more convenient. This was our experience: Go in to WARL and find a dog we are really interested in adopting. Unfortunately 2 minutes before we put our application in someone else put one in. Bummer--but these things happen. HOWEVER, we were not able to put in a back up application and they wouldn't take our number in case the first application fell through. I'd really love to know why this is a policy? They did tell us to call and check in to see if the dog ended up not getting adopted and we did just that. Well lo and behold the dog was back at WARL the next week. We left three messages and when we got in touch with someone at adoption services they said we could come and put in an application. That same day we drove all the way out there and once again someone had just put in an application--despite the fact that we wanted to put in a back up application the week before, called several times inquiring and drove all the way out there. Our interest in this dog and clear desire to adopt her was completely disregarded. There was really not one person who seemed to care that we had been interested from the start. NOT COOL AT ALL and the process just makes no sense for potential dog owners. It really put us off. The people working the front desk told us to "keep checking back." We will NOT being going back to WARL--which is too bad because I'd love to give one of their great dogs a loving home. My advice to WARL administration: get your administrative sh*t together and start to recognize that if you want your dogs to go to caring people, you should maybe start treating potential owners with a little more dignity and respect. This shouldn't sound silly to an organization that deals with rescue animals but perhaps you need reminding; for some people visiting and bonding with a dog is a little bit of an emotional experience. You should revise your policies so that the people who want to rescue an animal don't leave feeling drained and thwarted--that is NOT AT ALL what animal adoption is about. My advice to potential adopters: the dogs at WARL are great. But that's about it. There is a high possibility that you will end up leaving without a dog and with feelings of major frustration. Take a look at City Dogs Rescue or another great rescue organization if you want to guarantee that you have a pleasant and smooth adopting experience. What a great place! I can't say enough. We adopted two kittens from WARL about a year and a half ago. The facilities are so impressive - use of technology and little comforts - the animals are treated like pets rather than strays. The cats and dogs all seem so much happier here than at other shelters, which probably helps them to get adopted faster. We spent hours and hours on separate occasions getting to know the kittens - as well as the dogs and puppies. When we decided to adopt, it was pretty easy and the shelter checked up on us a while later to make sure things were going well. My baby is from here, and the process of adopting her was wonderful. They took the time to get to know what I wanted in a dog (calm, capable of being home while I went to work) and matched me up with a dog. I must say, I wasn't super excited over the match, as she seemed rather "blah" and had been at the shelter for three months. They told me that she really warmed up to people after she got comfortable & would make a wonderful companion. They were totally correct - two and a half years later we are quite the pair. If you want a pet, but are worried about getting a personality that doesn't match your own I would strongly recommend WARL. They are able to select an animal for you in a way that a breeder or more over-burdened shelter is unable to do. Be prepared for an intensive interview though, they want to make sure that you are really capable of having an animal. I believe this contributes to the wonderful pairings they make of people and pets. Also, the shelter itself is fantastic - modern, clean, and like an uppity-pet shop. Not at all the dark, depressing place most people associate with the word "shelter." This calm environment contributes to the great associations I have with adopting my girl. This review is based on customer service and nothing else. I had an appointment and waited in line to check in for nearly 15 minutes while only one staff person was there. My simple question was whether i was in the right place but the woman at the desk took her sweet time with each person in front of me. It would have made more sense to just ask what i needed it at te bare minimum acknowledge me and say "I'll be right with you". I came back the same day to pick up my pet and the same thing happened. I was ignored and not asked what i needed. I understand it's a busy place but that may mean they need more staff. read more

Wow! WARL is a fantastic place to adopt a pet from. It's a very welcoming environment; we spent a good three days there hanging out with the cats before we decided which kitty we would take home. The cat area has private play rooms so you can spend some alone time with the cat you are thinking of adopting, which is great for the shyer kitties who might be overwhelmed by their neighbors, or you can play with whatever cats are out on the floor when you get there. The adoption process went very smoothly, and they send you home with a bag of food, info to help your cat adjust to his new home, and his medical history. If you think you'd rather adopt from a kill shelter because you'll be saving a life, many of WARL's animals have been rescued from kill shelters, and WARL often takes in sick or older animals who would otherwise be put down. By adopting from WARL, you'll free up space for them to rescue another animal from a kill shelter, and you support the no-kill model, which all shelters should aspire to. read more

All the other reviews here seem to be for dogs and cats; I own guinea pigs and in the past year have adopted a few piggies from HRA; I am VERY satisfied with the service I got from all employees/volunteers, everybody was professional, friendly, and efficient. The guinea pigs were maintained in clean, roomy cages/enclosures, they had food, some toys, etc., to keep them occupied. I was interviewed by Staff personnel, given a history of each piggy (as much as they knew about the animals). Also a coupon for a free vet visit! I can't say enough good things about HRA, if I go to adopt again, THIS will be where I go. (and by the way, they DO have animals of various other species, if you can't fit a dog or cat into your lifestyle; guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, turtles, snakes, etc! Updated again: I volunteer here so if you have any questions I may be able to help. It's a wonderful place. Updated: I'm totally adopting the cutest dog from here. I've seen her twice so far and everyone has been super awesome about telling me what I need to know. The adoption fee for dogs is $165. This includes all meds they need, spayed/neutered, microchipped, UTD on all shots and a 5lb bag of kibble. The adoption process is easy. They accept three applications per pet. Then they match the animal up with the best choice. You get an interview and they only come look at your place if you have never had animals before. It takes about two weeks total depending on whether or not they still need to be spayed/neutered. I've spent some time at WARL and I must say, I really love the place. Everyone is friendly and really knows the animals. The facilities are all quite new and help foster a relaxing place for the animals to be until they are adopted. I realize what M.J. is saying about it being a no-kill shelter but WARL does try to adopt as many animals as possible. They have taken in animals from all over who were displaced. The animals they do take in are generally more easy to adopt out only because it allows them to rescue more animals that need homes. All of the animals spend sometime with the employees and vets there before being placed in a home in order to make sure that the animals are friendly and won't attack a potential owner. WARL also takes lots of measures to make sure the animals are healthy and are getting plenty of exercise. If you are thinking of adopting a pet and worried about the possible temperament of the animal then consider adopting from WARL. I wanted to adopt a dog. Yet, in many ways, I was more afraid of dealing with a shelter-dirt, disease, smell-than in taking a risk with an animal. My fears were allayed at WARL. It is in a beautiful building. The animal areas are light and airy. Each dog is one or two to a very large, open bullpen. There is a zen waterfall in one area. The people are kind and interested. My adoption for Winston took place over 28 hours. I went in, filled out forms, went through checks. I had wanted Winston (then a different name) but someone had placed a hold on him. They called me that night to tell me his adoption had fallen through. I ran in the next day, went through a series of interviews, spent time with the dog, showed them my take home kit. Helping the furry ones is the name of the game. They cannot cry out for help. They cannot tell the teacher or an adult that their mommy of daddy is leaving them without food or water. I can't tell you how appreciative i am of the medical staff at Washington Rescue League. I called monday morning and spoke to Miss Diane who looked out for a cancellation aop't (rarely happens) and called me left a voicemail and called back again to see if my situation wirh my ShiPoo had gotten better. She scheduled me the next morning 8/25. Walked in the medical center and Ms Julina checked me in and very knowledgeable about mostly anything 'pooch' the Staff treated my injured pooch with care and i highly recommend them. After dealing with several different pet rescue agencies in the N.Va/D.C. Area, I can say that WARL is the best. We were very impressed with the facility, the quality of information on each animal and the staff. We wanted a smaller dog and it seemed like most of the dogs in the other shelters were pit bull or pit bull mixes. We were very relieved to find a terrier mix puppy available for adoption when we stopped in. The adoption process was painless and we were able to bring our new wiggly family member home in two days. The price is manageable and it is nice that it includes the microchip and the spaying or neutering, plus enrollment in Puppy Kindergarten. We have been treated very poorly by other pet rescue agencies with little to no communication regarding dogs we were interested in meeting/adopting. The experience at WARL is the opposite--very warm, welcoming, and most important--eager to find forever homes for the animals they rescue. read more

My fiance called this place "the Shangri-La of animal shelters." That pretty much covers it. Love the clean, beautiful pet areas and all the happy kitties out playing with volunteers while soothing music plays in the background. WARL also seems like a great place to adopt a pet from! My family adopted all our cats from WARL growing up, and they turned out awesome. That said, fiance and I came here on our quest for a kitten and were kinda frustrated. We wanted a young kitten (you know, 3 months or so) so he'd acclimate well with our 2 year old cat. There weren't many options. When kittens come in, they have to be processed and treated for whatever illness they've got, which seems to delay their age at availability somewhat. You can't hang out with the "in process" kittens (even though they're the ones on display right in the front lobby, and the littlest and cutest.) I asked when kitten X would be available and was told I should just call back every day and be ready to come over right away, since kittens go fast once they're available. I wasn't ready to commit quite that much time and aggression to the kitten acquisition process, esp. since it seemed pretty likely to end in frustration. But it is nice to have them pre-screened, healthy, and ready-to-go out of the gate.We adopted a kitten from a stray pregnant cat via Craigslist instead, which was quick and uncomplicated, but it cost $$$ to treat all the diseases she'd picked up along the way. I was directed to the Washington Animal Rescue League by a coworker after I lost my cat in October. She said that even if I didn't adopt a cat from there, it might a good way to cope with the pain of losing a pet. And she was right. Upon going, I found myself looking over a bunch of cats looking to get adopted. While it didn't erase the agony of losing a pet, it did lessen the impact a bit. I kept going a few weeks at a time, and even donated a box of unused cat food and supplies, thinking that I was never going to open my heart to another pet. The facility was gorgeous, clean, warm and inviting. Cats and Dogs were in different parts of the building, and the cat facility which I visited often played soothing music. I noticed that the cats at WARL looked far less depressed than the cats on display at Petsmart, which might indicate that they are being cared for, paid attention to, and (relatively) content. There was usually someone there to monitor visitors and answer questions about various cats, such as their conditions, how long they've been there, habits the cats have formed and how well they deal with people. There were several aquarium-like rooms that you can interact with a cat one-on-one and see how they handle being with a human, or how they want to play. And the weeks went by, where I'd go about once a week. And finally I came around and adopted a cat. The process was simple but thorough and I was given a ton of resources to tap into in case I needed it. WARL even supplied a list of vets who'd do a free check up for my cat. The staff was unbelievably friendly and willing to answer any question about cats that came into their care. I'm deeply appreciative to find myself with another cat (even if she's a bit spoiled). WARL even called a few weeks later to check up on me and my cat to make sure we were doing well, even went as far as to direct me to the animal behaviorist at their facility to answer cat questions I had. She was AMAZING, offering different ways to play with her, toys I could invest in, etc. I'd strongly suggest anyone who is looking for a cat to check WARL out. For those who have lost an animal, this really did help me get out and open my heart to another. That said, if you have canned/dried food, towels, toys, food bowls, or treats, they are happy to accept donations. Cat adoption fees is beyond reasonable and each cat that you adopt will have had their shots, and fixed/spayed. read more

My friend adopted her kitten -Oktty there, and half an year later we adopted our puppy Eagis-from them too~ Both the dog and the kitten we adopted are doing very well now. I feel the staffs are very friendly and helpful, and the most important, they care about animals. And also, they treat people with respects. I guess when you walk into an animal shelter, you are not expecting to be treated as "valued customer", you just want to see the cats and dogs are doing great (at least I feel this way). They do charge a small amount of fee for volunteering, but I feel that makes sense. The fees are used for the administrative work, and to maintain their volunteer online system. Also a small fee guarantees only people who really want to help become volunteers. If it was free then I can image lots of people come and leave really quick and that does no good to the animals, especially to those who are sensitive and need to be loved by families. read more

We love WARL! We adopted our sweet boy from here back in September. The adoption process wasn't the smoothest, but thats because they thought the litter had distemper. We had to wait a lot longer than we thought and without any communication. But besides that, the process was okay. We have taken him to WARL's medical center for check ups at least 3 or 4 times and we love them. The one blonde haired vet (I wish I remembered her name) is so sweet! Our pup loved her! They always know what they are talking about and just exactly what to give our pup. The african american receptionist is also the sweetest ever! It is SUPER hard to get a appointment here so expect a large back up until they have an open spot. Definitely consider adopting from here and also visiting their on premise vets! read more

I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with them. We had been looking to adopt for well over a year with no luck at all. We currently have a lab that is 7 years old so clearly we can care adequately for an animal right? I was starting to wonder if some of the agencies really wanted to find homes for the dogs they had. I understand they are trying to protect animals from going to bad homes but I drew the line at looking any further when one wanted me to provide financial information. We had given up until Washington Animal Rescue came to where I work for an event. 1) The staff is wonderful.. from the event, to check in at the facility, interview process and beyond you could tell they believed in what they were doing every day and were happy to be at work. From our previous experiences we were very hesitant and almost negative going into the building for our interview and were pleasantly surprised at our welcome and what happened beyond. Shaniqua was absolutely amazing during our interview process and made it very comfortable as well. 2) I do not want to comment on whether or not they are a kill shelter as a previous poster mentioned in their post as I don't have all the info and they may know something I don't.. but.. I can say this.. The dog we adopted was rescued from a no kill shelter in Alabama. Not sure why they would rescue dogs from a no kill shelter only to possibly euthanize them. Doesn't quite make sense to me. 3)The followup after we adopted was also unexpected and wonderful. read more

I adopted a cat from WARL this month. We told Sheila (a coordinator there) the type of cat we were looking for and she introduced us to a couple of cats that fit our description. We played with the cats in a private room and were able to see the cats interact to determine how they would do with our cat at home. We found the process to be very smooth- the day we decided to adopt our cat, we had a short five minute interview and were able to bring her home the next day. My review would be five stars except for that they only test one kitten in a litter for FIV and FELV, and not each kitten individually. The shelter did not tell me this before I brought my kitten home and my vet realized it at our first checkup. If I had known, I would have asked the shelter to personally test her before I brought her home to my cat. Otherwise, this is an amazing shelter and highly recommended! read more

I was told by a staff person when I was at the shelter looking to adopt a cat that because one of my dogs is not neutered they cannot "support" me...and declined me as an adopter. Sooooooo, to all animal breeders out there, dont come here to adopt a pet....or "Support" this shelter....they won't support you. Anyway, I guess they are not worried too much about finding homes for the dogs and cats, they must have a surplus of families wanting pets, since they so easily turn away decent animal loving families. I think if they told me the policy and declined my application i wouldn't be so offended...but to say we "can't support you"...was just rude...I was there to help provide a home for a cat in need of one...not to be put down. read more

Yes, the facilities are unlike any other shelter I've ever seen. Do, however, try another place first, at least for cats. I had a really negative experience with the people in charge of the cat room ( NOT the kids volunteering, the adults). They, especially the woman in charge of the place, were cold, distrusting, cliqueish and snobby. I went to Petsmart and adopted my dream kitty! I'll never go back to WARL and will not recommend it! read more

WARL continues to impress me as a place full of people who love animals. Their caging system is humane, they care a lot about hygience, and I love the fact that they allow cats and dogs who get along to share space. The volunteers know the animals and can often talk to you about them and their habits. It is not a place that you walk into and out of wanting to cry - a fact that I actually think *helps* increase adoptions. As far as approval for adoption, it was actually very fast for me. I met the cats I wanted to adopt on Sunday. WARL approved me today (Tuesday) after a phone conversation, and I can pick my new fuzzy friends up immediately. I don't know if this is a fast-track procedure that occurs when applications raise no flags and they've spoken with a building manager who can attest to character, or if they've streamlined their approach based on feedback, but again: it took me two days to be approved. And they apologized that it took so long! A response also to some who referred to their only taking "adoptable" animals - this is just not true. True, they cannot probably take the most "lost" causes, but they will take cats with FIV, for example, which otherwise are often immediately euthanized. They will take dogs with behavioral issues that will require patience and work to fix. And the fact is, sadly, there is such a great need that no matter what any of these places do, it will never be enough. I am glad they are there. I would also, in addition, love to see the other places in DC have the fortune of WARL and be able to raise enough funds to improve their facilities. We need them all, and there are a lot of good people working in all of them. read more

I've been coming to HRA's Medical Center (formerly Washington Animal Rescue League) for 3 years and each time, I've always come out very satisfied. The prices are very reasonable - about $60 for my dog's exam and $15-20 for the vaccines. My dog has been seen by Dr. Branson who is an amazing vet! She's patient and displayed a high-level of care and attention for my dog. A big plus for being seen on time and the numerous free parking spots in front of the building! I can't say enough positive things about HRA. read more

I use to think highly of this shelter. I adopted my beloved beagle from here and the process was simple and they took good care of her before she came to live with us. However, a few years after we had her she was attacked by a loose pitbull while we were out on walk. She was bleeding profusely with severe neck injuries I literally ran her back to the league medical center because it was the closest animal facility nearby and they refused to help her! I was standing there with a bleeding injured dog which I adopted from them and they asked me to fill out paperwork and said Our household income was too much for her to be treated there and they were cold and rude about it. Thank goodness a stranger/ fellow pet owner overheard the whole thing drove me and my bleeding dog to a vet in Maryland who treated her stitched her up and saved her life. For a place that is supposed to be an advocate animals I can't believe they were going to let my dog suffer in trauma. read more

By all means, adopt your dog or cat from WARL/DC Humane Society (they have now merged) You will be saving their lives. But be aware of who you are giving your money to....For years WARL has killed cats and dogs and they lie about it. This started with the last administration. No kill means less than 10% of animals are euthanized for reasons OTHER than medical/behavioral. They killed many animals that were just......normal animals ...and say it is "medical." Or "behavioral." Just ask any staff person who ever worked there and left. Check out Glass Door. They fire their volunteers, just dismiss them.......people who are giving up their valuable time to volunteer -- for asking questions about the euthanization process. They fire volunteers because they don't think they have the "right attitude." Ask the Director of the Shelter to show you in writing what official training staff has in the cat area. Adopt from there - by all means. But please, give your money to the true heroes in animal rescue....the no kill shelters in the PA/DC/VA/MD area......any of the the small shelters that go the extra mile for the animals. WARL was a most memorable, negative experience. First, researched visiting the webpage; phoned to schedule a consultation and receive directions. Upon arrival, spoke w/ front-desk staff, and Frank, an adoption counselor. An application w/ 3 required dog preferences was submitted. The approval process was explained to be, straight-forward w/ a likely favorable outcome. Within ~ one-week, a phone-interview was scheduled w/ a Brian Wilson, ( a 2 yr vet employee). Friday's interview was rescheduled to the following week, Tuesday. Calls to staff were made over the wkend to express ct'd interest. Wednesday, Mr. Brian Wilson explained, just returning from vacation that he was tired, and would call the following day. He did not. When i called, he explained w/ no apology that the dogs were no longer available, and were already in new homes. Explaining the situation to Mngr, Ms. Mary Jarvis was fruitless. She was incoopertv, avoiding the problem, deferring me to Gary Weitzman, the Director. Rather than waste your time; avoid WARL, adopt elsewhere from a more professional center. In sum: the staff is poor-performance & satisfaction with ineffectual communications, and rude not to have decency to at least apologize. WARL is a great organization. But do not use their "Medical Center" as the Veterinarian there in charge is both rude and most unprofessional. She is anything but caring and concerned about your pet's health. I would strongly suggest that if you do adopt a dog or cat there to find a vet that will at least treat you as the owner professionally. Dr. Rosen is clearly not cut from the same cloth as the other administration /management there. She comes across as vindictive, rude, and totally out of line for a veterinarian employed by a non profit agency that strives to match homeless dogs and cats with kind, loving people. Dr. Rosen is clearly not in line with the persona of WARL and their general approach to pet care. She is as close to heartless as any so called "professional" I have ever seen. Don't take a pet there by any circumstance. The clinic lacks professionalism, and proper oversight of the Vet's that come in to volunteer their time. Dr. Rosen is clearly lacking management skills and drastically void of inter-personal skills required by anyone associated with pets, and their loving owners. read more

I recently found a wounded cat on the steps of a neighbor's home. The cat had been hit by a car. He was injured and in shock. I called my neighbor who is on the Board of animal rescue. Colleen arrived on the scene. She and her husband drove the cat to Animal Rescue League. Apparently, a vet came in to try to save him. All of this was done over New Year's weekend. They did everything they could but were not able to help him. I used their medical center today for my two dogs. I did some research for affordable vet care in the DC area and they came up. I called and made an appointment a few weeks ago for their Wednesday Wellness program, though they have walk in times as well. I liked that they are very up front with the cost of services so I could compare it to previous vets we've been to. The prices are on their website and right when you walk in. From beginning to end I dealt with caring professional people. There was no one else in the wait room, which is clean and open. We filled out a form for each dog and provided a copy of last years records. Once we were called back we met a very friendly vet assistant who looked through the paperwork, went through the vaccines they needed this year, weighed them and took there temperature. They didn't push for the fecal test like previous vet offices had done and when i inquired if that was needed they said its mainly to check for parasites and more important in younger dogs. Our previous vets didn't explain it that way and didn't make me feel like we had an option. They seem to be focused on just the basic required vaccines, while they do offer others. I happen to realize that we didn't discuss the Bortatella (kennel cough) vaccine and once pointed out they did it right away. We foster dogs and go to dog parks so we wanted our pups protected. Before giving them the vaccine they made sure to tell us the cost and verify we were ok with that. Also something no other vet has done before, usually I get sticker shock afterwards. The vet came in and talked to us for a few minutes but we didn't have any big concerns. She told us how to know if the dogs are a good weight and I asked about joint supplements for my older dog. Everything went well, I would say the only negative comment is that it seemed to take a while, even though I dont believe they had any other appointments. Having said that, they're primary focus isn't their outside vet work so they were busy with other animals and surgeries. We saw one dog coming out of some surgery while we were there. I was looking for a basic but reliable place to take my pets for their annual appointment and I found it. It's a "no frills" kind of place-don't look for elaborate exam rooms or tons of creature comforts (I think the chair I was sitting on was broken) but that worked for me. I don't want to pay for the unneeded luxuries. Bottom line-they were professional, helpful, a bit on the slow side, but did everything we needed, and even let us buy preventatives in smaller than the full box (example a box of heartgard holds 6, but we were able to buy 3). I think they are really geared to help those who aren't financially well off, so if you can only afford one month of preventatives at a time, they can do that. I saw another person who bought just one months worth for her animal. In the end two appointments were multiple vaccines and preventives cost us $258, last year we paid $220 PER DOG for comparable service! Compared to the money I saved, I don't mind the slower service!
