Getting an appointment was pretty easy. Showing up with our new Scottie was a great experience. The front desk staff were very welcoming. The layout was great and comfortable with lots of space. Our tech was very friendly and helpful. Dr. Nichols came in sat on the floor and listened closely to everything we had to say and then explained all the next steps. Then came getting the vaccines needed and the explanation of follow ups. It was a great first experience and would recommend Dr Nichols and the practice. read more

I've been bringing my dogs here for years, and I've always appreciated the level of care. That's why it's disappointing to see some recent changes that feel less focused on clients and more on business decisions. Since the practice was sold, one change in particular has made things unnecessarily difficult: prescriptions for outside pharmacies can no longer be sent electronically. I confirmed with my pharmacist at Chewy that they are willing and able to receive electronic prescriptions, but District Vet will not send them. Instead, clients now have to request a written prescription and then coordinate getting it to the pharmacy themselves. In a time when digital prescribing is standard--and when people are already dealing with rising costs and busy schedules--this extra step feels avoidable and inconvenient. It's hard not to feel like this policy discourages clients from using more affordable or preferred outside pharmacy options. I understand that change is part of any business, but it's disappointing when those changes make things harder for long-time clients. I hope the practice reconsiders policies like this and continues to prioritize the convenience and trust of the pet owners who have supported them for years. I brought my pup in for her first annual exam. The location was convenient to DC and had a small but packed parking lot. The staff was extremely friendly and I had a short wait time of 2 minutes. They have free dog toys, treats, and poop bags out in the lobby which is super nice. I haven't been to another vet in DC, but it did seem a bit more on the pricey side with a $75 deposit for the appointment and $45 per vaccine. read more

The vet and staff are great if you are able to get in for a visit. I have brought my pets here for years and recommend the practice constantly, but it has gotten too crowded i think. For the last 6-12 months I have never been able to get a semi-urgent visit for one of my cats. I am very concerned about one of them not eating and being more lethargic than usual and they are not able to get him on the schedule for another month, even after they were told I had taken him to the emerg vet a few days ago and the emerg vet emphasized he needed to be seen by his regular vet within a week. We are now seeking a new vet, it sucks to have to leave the practice, but they have gotten impossible to work with unless your pet is healthy enough to schedule far enough in advance. read more

I have nothing but amazing things to say about this vet! I had gotten a puppy from PA to bring home to my parents all the way to CA. I quickly realized, with just days before my flight, that the pup was too big to carry on and had to go in the cargo. I called practically hundreds of vets in the area and no one could help me -- until here. Kristin, an amazing tech, was able to squeeze us in the very next day to get a travel certification. I am so grateful for her kindness! When I arrived for my appointment, the girl at the front desk was incredibly sweet and caring which instantly put me at ease. It was obvious that everyone here cared about animals so much. Dr. Jacobson was through and detailed -- even going so far as to look up the airline's requirements so that I wouldn't have any trouble dropping the pup off. She was obviously so smart and passionate about what she does. When I get a dog of my own, this is where I will be taking them! All in all a five star experience!! I readily admit that the vets and staff are competent, caring people. And the hospital is a regional chain that mirrors the larger chains with a business model that appears designed to bleed pet owners for very cent they can. Plus, they shamed me when I asked questions (complained) about escalating costs. Every time I go there I feel like my pockets have been picked. It is not enough to have competent, caring staff, ALL vets should have that as a baseline. But a reasonable business model based on something other than fleecing patients would be appreciated. Be clear, however, you won't find that at District Vets. read more

Losing my patience with this place.... Looking for a new vet Hmmm... this review is from January but was stuck in my draft folder- have been back several times, this place is amazing- Brought my three feline ladies here today and Dr. Hassell who is their cat specialist was great. Just moved from SoCal where I had the same vet the past almost 7 years so I did a lot of research before deciding on this office. Banfield at Pet Smart has free first visits but after seeing the reviews for Greenbelt I was wary. Dr.Hassell was so gentle with my girls and even softly sat on the floor to cradle one to check her belly where she's been over grooming and chewing. He didn't try to push for any extra testing and even talked me out of some paranoia I had. Another kitty has had food allergies but he's pretty sure this is just stress from the relocation. We are doing blood tests on all, as one has pancreatitis and is due for a test and the other hasn't been to the vet in a few years so just wellness maintenance. The visits were 5 or $10 more than I paid in Burbank CA but the bloodwork was substantially less so I don't mind at all. All of the staff were incredibly kind and gentle, they even helped me bring the kitties out to the car afterwards. The exam rooms are bright and comfortable and the whole facility is very clean. There's even glass doors on the back room where they take your pets to get blood, give shots etc so literally a very transparent operation. I didn't even have a wait time arriving 15 minutes early, they helped me bring my girls straight into a room. Waiting area was very large with coffee water and snacks free of charge. Really Glad I chose this place and I would definitely recommend! read more

We switched over from another animal hospital and what a difference District Vets is! We no longer feel like just a number and they know my dog and I by name already. They sent us this cute welcome card in the mail and also followed up by email after our first appointment. All these small personal details are appreciated. My dog had dental surgery recently and the total came out to be even lower than the low end of the original quote. So they are much more affordable and there's parking right out front. read more

I chose this vet because of the good reviews here. It's difficult to rate a vet during a pandemic when you cannot enter the building and watch them in action. However, I am quite upset they did not review his prior records carefully. I thought he had his heartworm, fecal, and lyme test not that long ago but I was told he was due. I hesitated and then had them do it because you can't get heartworm preventative without a test within a year. After returning home I found in the records I had sent that he did indeed have these tests done in October. This cost me an extra $117.93 for tests he didn't even need. I am not sure if I will be returning or not. I am very disappointed. UPDATE: I am happy to say they did do the right thing. They gave me a refund for those services. They actively discourage making appointments, offer to email you information that they never send, and when you come in the front desk folks don't care and just want to get back to answering the phone. Once I came in to get his yearly exam and he had a bad reaction to the medication once we got home and vomited. I called them back to let them know and they asked me to come back in so he could be looked at. 15 minutes later they called back to say they were closing at 2pm and that I should turn around and go home and that my dog was probably just fine. They encouraged me to go to an animal hospital if he got worse. So disappointed but maybe they can improve? I hope they can get back to actually caring about animals because they used to be excellent. read more

I love the care of my dog. The front desk reps are a 50-50 shot. I have some really really great ladies and a few not-so-great. Unfortunately, you have to go through the front desk before you can get to the back. So there's that. Most recently, I had a challenge that led me to Alondra... **insert Angelic music** She was a God send!! She de-escalated my situation (and I was PISSED!) and has followed up with me since to keep me posted with progress. She needs to do quality assurance at all the companies I deal with. The doctors I have experienced have all been great, which is why I keep coming back. I would refer them to a friend/relative, but warn them they may need all of their patience for the front desk. read more

I brought my puppy straight here earlier this year based on great reviews. I have had nothing but great interactions with the veterinarians, I would like to say up front. However, I am going to have to switch vets, after a series of unnecessary frustrations. First and foremost, this clinic will NOT approve prescriptions through online pharmacies digitally or over the phone. In order to get the best price on flea/tick/heartworm meds, I have to call them when I need a refill, go physically pick up the script and then mail it to the pharmacy. In 2020, this is absurd, and the only possible reason I can see for this is that they'd prefer I shell out $35 a month and go physically pick up meds from them. Ridiculous. I take my cats to NOVA Cat Clinic and they don't have this absurd practice -- and therefore, they have my continued business. I am an experienced pet owner and I am wary of vaccine mark-ups at vets, so I bring my pets to vaccine clinics and then take the records to their vets to keep up-to-date. I did just this in March after my dog finished several vaccine series. I handed a file folder of paperwork to the front desk to input. Months later I'm getting notices that my dog is behind on core vaccines, because apparently that information never made it into the system. What really broke the camel's back was several weeks ago, when -- in order to get a new flea/tick/heartworm script -- my dog needed a heartworm test. Reasonable enough. When I get there to check in, the receptionist says my dog is scheduled for a wellness exam, vaccines and a heartworm test. Huh? She last had a wellness exam in March, she's UTD on vaccines. She just needed the test. The receptionist said they usually schedule that as a tech appointment, so who knows why the previous person I talked to decided to book an appointment with the doctor. Again, only explanation I can figure is to bilk me out of another $75 just to feel my dog's organs and maybe listen to her heartbeat. During COVID-19 this is especially annoying, because I can't physically be in the exam room to stop them from doing anything unnecessary. Luckily I was paying close attention during phone check-in. Pet owners should always be vigilant about veterinarians upselling on the unnecessary. This is pretty standard practice for the business, unfortunately. But District Vet additionally wasting my time and money on the basics is where I draw the line. read more

We switched to District Vet from another practice in the city about 6 months ago and couldn't be happier. Hassell has been awesome with our ailing older dog and gave us great guidance and referrals. Last night, we saw Dr. Nichols bc our cat had a weird skin condition that popped up suddenly, and she was amazing. Instead of our fearful kitty peeing all over himself, he relaxed into her massaging hands as she examed him and spoke soothing words. We came home with a calm cat (ok, so he didn't LOVE every moment) who hasn't spent all his time hiding from us, AND he's doing better already. The front desk was kind and quick, and the waiting room is always clean and calm - not a crowded stress fest like at the practice we left. read more

From the 1st visit (after I adopted my cat) to the last visit (when my cat passed away), District Vet has been very helpful, professional and responsive throughout the 7 years I dealt with them. Dr. Hassell and the nurses seem to genuinely care about their furry patients- I always felt my cat was in good hands. The front staff are usually friendly and proactive- meaning they make sure all customers have been taken care of or they're cleaning the hospital. By the way, the hospital is always clean and in good condition. When I email them, they always respond. I never had an issue with them. If I ever get another pet again, I'll definitely go back to them. They even work with the cremation place so you can pick up the ashes there instead of driving 2 hours way. read more

So thankful for District Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Hassell has now treated both my cats (one has allergies and the other had gotten really sick). I love how he explains everything so thoroughly. So much so that I barely understand some of it, but hey, I rather hear it all and ask my questions. I also liked that when I had follow up questions, he was helpful and available via email. My cats are my world, and I'm beyond thankful for his care. The cost I want to say is comparable to the DC area. You also pay for what you get. And I would rather pay for a good visit and care for my babies, than risk losing them or a dowinging it. read more

First, I would give Dr. Bryant Hassell a 5-star as a vet and had brought my cat in for the past 6 years. But the vet nurse gets 0 star -- rude, impatient, and poor interpersonal communications. He spoke at a million miles an hour (under a mask) where I could barely hear or understand him. When i asked him questions to help clarify why the vaccine was done before blood test results, he rolled his eyes and kept talking while walking away with back turned. Likewise for the front desk staff, the vet gave me a set of instructions to set up the return appointment while I waited for my cat. So I did. And the front desk staff contradicted his instructions. When I asked questions, she was impatient, abrupt, and distracted. Zero star. read more

I have been taking my pets to see Dr Hassell at District Vet for years now. I am very picky when it comes to vets, and Dr Hassell meets my incredibly high standards. Not only is he gentle and caring with my two cats, his technical and medical acumen are top notch. Also, he's incredibly responsive to emails and makes room in his schedule when there's an emergency. I'm incredibly sorry that others have had a less than stellar experience with the vet techs and front desk staff at District Vet. I can't say that I share that experience. Everyone at District Vet has been just amazing to me and to all of my animals. Everyone is so friendly and knowledgeable. Working at a vet's office is a stressful job . . . studies and research show that vets and vet techs suffer from incredibly high rates of depression, this probably includes the front office staff, due to the importance pets play in people's lives today. Please keep that in mind when visiting District Vet or any vet for that matter, and exercise patience and compassion. You will definitely get better service that way. read more

I hesitate about posting this because, as my cat's caretaker, I was ultimately responsible for her. However, my preferred veterinarian, the so-called cat whisperer, missed a large cancerous mass in her abdomen that had metastasized to her lungs and hip. When is became almost impossible to schedule an appointment with my preferred vet, and then when he failed to recognize the gravity of her condition, I should have taken her elsewhere. read more

I just had the best call with Kristen. Really. The pandemic ahs made getting pet appointments in the DMV very challenging. I have a cat who has been experiencing some upper respiratory issues (i.e. intermittent sneezing) and I was getting nervous as they have been increasing over the past few days...especially today. Kristen was able to allay my fears by informing me of several things that made me believe that the situation was not crucial, as I waited for my next available appointment at my regular vet in five days. She explained in some easy-to-understand detail that my cat would be fine until his appointment. That went a long way in comforting me! Thanks Kristen! read more

We had a terrible experience with this hospital so far and we can't believe the lack of professionalism and disrespect exhibited by the Front Office staff. The Front Office repeatedly provided contradictory information to us, Doctor didn't inform us that our puppy had a medical issue during an hour long exam. Later on, we were informed that there was actually a medical issue which required an additional exam and additional fee. When we challenged the contradictory information provided to us, the Front Office hung up the phone on our face and then did not take any of our repeated phone calls. What kind of medical practice does that? We found this behavior utterly disrespectful and unprofessional. Don't recommend anyone this practice particularly those seeking to establish a care for their puppy with a vet for the first time. read more

Dalia at District Vet did a wonderful job today catching a stray cat that tried to escape from its carrier. As they were walking up the steps to the Brookland office, the pet carrier split in half and the cat tried to bolt. Dalia went into super hero mode and grabbed the cat by the scruff of its neck before it hit the ground, saving the day! Super impressive! 10 out of 10! I highly recommend District Vets! This review is specifically for Alondra, who works at this veterinary hospital. My baby kitten Rockette is a bit of a nervous Nellie when it comes to blood work. She needed her pre op blood test before spaying, and she came in a few times but they couldn't get her to settle down. She even took anti anxiety meds but the poor baby was so scared and fidgety! The third time we came in, we mentioned this to Alondra who was at the front desk, and she popped right into action! She said she was great with kittens and would help. A few minutes later she walked out with Rockette and happily confirmed they were able to draw the blood! It was such a relief. Alondra is a highly skilled technician and incredibly helpful and kind. Before we got brought our lil pup home, I did a TON of research on Google, Yelp, YouTube, you name it, for the best vet in the area along with all other puppy related matters as every first time dog owner should. After reading all the great reviews here for District Vet, I had my heart and eyes set on it, even though we live pretty far from the area. We were even luckier to be set up with Dr. Connie Lin! When our pup was having pretty bad diarrhea, I called the Eastern Market location a little frantically, and the front staff there weren't as accommodating or sympathetic as the one at Brookland. They just told me to, "drop off a fecal sample," and when I called again to ask one more time (because the diarrhea got even worse), they just asked, "well, did you drop off the fecal sample like we told you to?" I'm so glad I overlooked this interaction and called the Brookland location because the front staff there were able to squeeze us in on a busy Saturday. I was so incredibly thankful, and we were so blessed to be with Dr. Lin. Yes, the facility is super clean, has parking (limited, but present), exudes a warm ambiance, and everything is great and all- but the stars of the show are really Dr. Lin and the staff. From start to finish, Dr. Lin and all the vet technicians who were assisting us were incredible. Everyone kept great communication with us and made sure to make us feel cared for. Dr. Lin was informative, extremely thorough when answering all my tedious questions, and never made me feel like a bother when I did bother her with more and more questions! She made sure to save plenty of time for us since we are first time dog owners. Honestly, I can go on and on about how amazing Dr. Lin and the District Vet staff are, but I'll end it here. Do not hesitate taking your fur babies here, and you will most definitely get the best care and ample amount of attention you need! read more

We switched our pets here at the beginning of the year after we moved to the neighborhood and I'm so glad we did. Every single person, from the front-desk staff to the vet techs, to the vets are kind, caring, and just overall amazing. Dr. London is our vet and she is thoughtful, thorough and compassionate. She answers all my crazy dog mom questions and does not rush the exam. After our appointment, we always receive a follow-up email and Dr. London is always happy to answer questions or concerns via email. I could tell you several specific stories about the great care we've received but honestly, there are a lot of those already on Yelp!, and instead of reading the rest of this you should just make your appointment already. Great addition to the Brookland neighborhood! My wife and I moved to the neighborhood in April and have seen the neighborhood transform in the few months that we have been here. From renovations to Turkey Thicket, to new restaurant openings and now a bright shiny new veterinarian office, Brookland is adding the right things, at the right pace. As for District Vet, I'll keep this short. 5 stars. The space is beautifully renovated, the administrative staff is arguably the most pleasant I've ever encountered, Dr. Dan Teich is very knowledgeable (think the "Dr. House" of Vets) and the prices are GREAT. After taking my dog to Friendship Animal Hospital for about a year, let me tell you, that last point is really important. If you live anywhere in D.C. and own pets, I seriously think you should consider switching to District Vet. I'm not just saying this because there are free snacks in the waiting room (for humans)! If you live nearby, what are you waiting for?!? Give it a shot, you won't regret it! read more

I'm extremely disappointed in the level of service my beloved dog received. I brought my senior dog to this clinic. District Vet would eventually inform me that she would have to have kidney stones and a benign tumor removed. This cost me a total of $2000. There a few things that bothered me. 1) Customer service was extremely disappointing. The vet who evaluated my dog and ultimately performed the surgery had a stale, flat bed-side manner. In hindsight, I should have left and never came back after the first visit but since I read a lot of positive reviews, I ignored my experience. My dog has panic attacks when she goes to any vet. I've got to be in and out quickly. Consequently, I ask my questions via email after any visit. Big mistake with this vet clinic! The answers always given were either dismissive, one word answers or ignored. 2) Operating expectations was another disappointment. My dog needed to have kidney stones and a benign tumor removed. I was told to arrive at the clinic at 8am. I arrived at 7:50am but my dog was not operated on until 2:30pm. My dog had to wait 6 1/2 hours before they operated on her. This is the same dog that has panic attacks the minute she arrives in a vet's office. I can only imagine the amount of anxiety she had to deal with prior to being seen. Had I had known they wouldn't be able to see her until later that day, I wouldn't have brought my dog in so early. After the surgery, sadly, she could never really walk the same again. The surgery really took a toll on her quality of life. Plus when it came down to getting the prescription for her dog food, it took them 1 1/2 months before I got it. 3) Two months after surgery I ended up taking my dog to another vet. The new vet was surprised when I told her about the kidney stone removal surgery because she showed me xrays of some kidney stones that were still in there! I was furious. Keep in mind I spent a total of $2000 for the removal of kidney stones and the benign tumor. read more

Probably the best cat specialist in the DMV who is passionate about wellbeing of the kitties rather than solely focusing on making money in disguise of overpriced diagnostic tests, meds and food. I have seen 4 vets in DMV area for my kitties and at least one clinic is very well known in the social media celebrity kitty accounts. However, Dr. Brant Hassell seems to be the best kept secret in this area in terms of quality care. Sure, he doesn't come off as the most friendly veterinarian but he doesn't beat around the bush nor does he push to sell stuff at an inflated price. On a side note: This is DMV you will pay more for an average or sometimes medicore veterinary care. But district vet seems to be 20-30% less than the celebrity kitty clinics without compromising in quality. Are they the best vet I've ever had an experience with? Absolutely not. That right belongs to two different vets in Detroit, Michigan. But they are probably the best vet in DMV. read more

The staff and vets here are amazing. They accommodate all kinds of requests and situations with consistent follow through. My pup was very anxious and reactive. The staff quickly recognized that and would have us wait in a separate room from the waiting area. They were all extremely patient and a tech actually carried my dog out to my car once because my pup was so anxious and would have completely lost it if she had to walk through the waiting room with the other dogs. I got great suggestions from Dr. Hassell on how to work with her. He shared resources and checked in after the visit via email as well. When my dog got bit by another dog, I was able to get an urgent visit within hours. Dr. London talked through her assessment and was very willing to discuss a treatment plan that we all agreed with. Dr. London, Chris, and the whole team at District Vet Hospital made our annual checkup an absolute delight today. My dog is a little shy around new people and pets, but they whisked us into a private room right away to help keep him calm. Dr. London moved slowly with him so he would feel comfortable, and answered all of my questions super thoroughly. Biscuit loved her and I feel great trusting her with his healthcare. In addition to the physical exam, we updated 3 core vaccines, did an annual 4DX heartworm test, a senior screen blood panel, and secured 12 months of top-of-the-line flea, tick, and heartworm preventative meds all for just under $700. We'll be coming back for his dental cleaning in a couple of weeks, and it's a huge relief to know that he'll be in such good hands for that procedure (which we've been nervous about). The practice is spotless, quiet, and every part of our experience was handled incredibly professionally and smoothly. We walked out the door with his Rabies certificate and visit summary already in my email inbox, and Biscuit is a happy camper. Thanks for taking such amazing care of us today! read more

I love my dogs new vet. Dr. Teich saw my pup when he was first adopted and we both loved him when he was at CityPaws DC. He left that practice and we stayed because we were lazy and it was close. We quickly regretted that. We have now seen the error in our ways and will be going to District Vet from now on. Our pup had a stomachache and had been throwing up for several days. We called the old vet and they were apathetic and didn't want to see him as an emergency. We called District Vet as we'd been toying with the idea of switching and they said that they couldn't guarantee they could fit him in but we should come in and see what they could do. He was seen within the hour, got amazing care, felt better the next day, and even a follow up email a couple days later! I'm sold right there! Amazing! Don't be discouraged by the location of this clinic. You should hop in an Uber, Cab, or car and get over there today. The office is super friendly, they do what they say they will do, and they treat customers right. I highly recommend District Vet and both Drs. Teich and Hassel. They treat both the human and animals customers well and with respect. I cannot say enough good things!! read more
