Their food is really good for a small town Chinese restaurant. I usually get the same thing, the great Hunan beef and shrimp. It is always very good. The service is usually okay, but to be honest it could use a little help. The restaurant is older and it could use a complete overhaul, but It is usually neat and clean. read more

The best Chinese at the best price I have had in a long time! Can't not say enough great things about their lunch menu. Sweat and sour, sesame, and beef and vegetables all with fried rice and soup. Visiting family that moved to the area. We decided to try. Best food in a clean restaurant with great service. Will be back and we do not live locally. read more

First time ordering take out from here. It was a large group order placed over the phone. I tried to state clearly when ordering which was off the normal menu and which was a lunch special for each item. I made sure to include the item name and menu number too. I didn't do pick up myself this time though. Everything came in plastic boxes with unwrapped plastic cutlery. Nothing was labeled and half the normal ones were instead lunch sized. The food tasted ok, but nothing waswarnm so they likely made it too early before the scheduled time. Guess if we ever order again we'll need to hand them the typed up order. So the food itself was good, just probably better to eat in instead. Very large menu with something for everyone including vegan options. The team especially loved the crab ragoons. read more

Food is excellent. Service was decent not super on top of things but good when they were at the table. Me and my daughter went in and had lunch. Great portions. Also get soup and a little side of crab raccoons with your lunch and hot tea served with it overall I would highly recommend. Read my previous reviews for ambiance, food quality, service etc. Tonight, Friday, we just stopped got dinner because... well, for no reason other than being Friday and we were tired. We ordered the Delight of Three and the Garlic with Shrimp Sauce. The latter was specially good. The shrimp was cooked to perfection and the whole dish was very aromatic. Oh and they have new menus. It's your typical run of mill Chinese Buffet. Nothing special about the decor. However, the food is better than most Chinese buffets. They keep replenishing food and do a pretty good job of keeping fresh food on the buffet. read more

Hunan Garden is the only Chinese place in Mount Vernon. It's good they don't have competition. This place would get crushed if there was anything remotely better than this. It's a family owned place so they are trying hard. They just need to put out better food then what they gave me the last time. I had the Kung Pao Bean Curd. It's about $8 for the lunch portion. The food shouldn't even cost that. It tasted like it was very old. This was not fresh tofu. It was dry. This was covered in something like barbecue sauce. It was not close to tasting like the sauce should be. They were pretty slow at service too. It gets credit for being family owned and independent. Even so, it still needs to put out some good food. They seem to just need to focus on that. read more

Came jn around 30 min before lunch special ended. Ordered Garlic chicken. When it arrived thir d the white rice was so hard I could not chew it. The Garlic sauce was so thin it didn't even flavor the food. I just didn't eat it and asked for my bill. Had similar problem couple days earlier. Portion was about half size I got during lunch regular hours. Guy came over both times and said this is same he had served for six years. Someone must have bought the business. I hate being lied to. We ordered on Christmas Day for dinner which might have contributed to the lack luster food. 4 egg rolls and one order of General Tso was $20.25 which I thought was expensive especially since the egg rolls were barely warm and without sweet and sour sauce. Also the broccoli in the general tso was chewy like it had been microwaved. I was not impressed which is sad because I really wanted to like it. read more

I love this place to eat. There food is so good and authentic Chinese food. I love all there food that I have tried. My favorite food is there fried rice any way lol, I love the fact they put eggs in the mixed fried rice. I personally love to eat it with ketchup, eggs rolls and the crab Ragoons are phenomenal. I give it 5 because no restaurant is perfect but I do have 1 minor issue if you go there I suggest you bring your own drink unless you want sink water. Because they charge by the bottles and it's super pricey. We got takeout - general tsos and sesame chicken. We enjoyed both far more than new china express. They wouldnt let me order noodles as a side for the chicken, so I had to buy a whole entree of chicken lo mein. Super yummy and flavorful though! $34 for 3 entrees. Plenty for leftovers! Taking Covid BS into the situation. My wife waited for 2 hours (yes, 2 hours) to get our order. Drove 30 min home to find only half the order. Today we decided to do takeout two quarts of fried rice and one hot and sour soup everything seem to be really flavorless the fried rice was just that fried rice nothing else in it but some carrots and peas the hot and sour soup was more sour than hot because we had to add hot pepper flakes just to get some kind of flavor seem to be the broth and tofu not very impressed at today's visit normally they're much better read more

I have been eating here for 21 years. I love the Spicy Orange Chicken. The customer service is great. Be wary on take out orders. My order has been shorted a couple of times and by the time you get home it is too far to get it fixed. Otherwise a great place to eat. read more

Sooooo disappointed. My favorite restaraunt for years in Mount Vernon has always been Hunan Garden. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of money I've spent there on the best Chinese food around. Not sure what has happened, but the last two times I've eaten there has not been a good experience at all. First of all, it doesn't smell good. Secondly, the food has tasted greasy and arrived barely lukewarm. And today, I ate (or tried to eat) the worst Pad Thai that I've ever had. (And I've eaten a LOT.) They asked me the customary, "How was everything" when they noticed we hadn't hardly touched our meal and did not want a to go box. I was honest with them and told them I was afraid something might be wrong with one of their ingredients or asked if they perhaps have a new cook. "No - same cook. That will be $18.40" Not happy. I never write reviews like this, but I'm really disappointed. I always loved this place. But it appears my Hunan days have come to an end. read more

I have been to Hunan Garden a few times and have had some bad experiences with customer service and restaurant cleanliness, but overall the biggest issue is the food quality. The food is very greasy, swimming in sauce (which I really hate), and lacks proper seasoning. There is absolutely NO WAY to get them to make things spicy. No matter how many ways I have asked, the food has never even registered on the spice scale. Overall, this is a place I avoid. If I am pressed for time or otherwise desperate I will go, but I must learn to lower my expectations. read more

I love Hunan. Great service and the best Chinese in the area. You really can't go wrong when choosing a place to eat. I really can't say enough good things about this place. Although when you order a soda the bring you a glass of ice and a 16oz bottle. Which is good or bad, depending on how you look at it. I just stick with water. The hostess is always a delight and is great to talk to. I've never had a bad meal from this place. Often times I find that I order too much food and end up taking it home. Large portions for a good price, although they offer great lunch deals. Choose this place over the buffet. read more

When I walked in the atmosphere was great, I could smell good food and heard conversations. There's a large area with large round tables to right and to the left are booths and almost all of them were full. The menu was a mix of Americanized Chinese, traditional Chinese and included Dim Sum as well. There were a number of dishes we didn't know much about and there were dishes being enjoyed by other customers that looked delicious. The wait staff was more than happy to explain the dishes and/or show us on the menu what someone was eating. They took very good care of us and shared the tasks of bringing our food, filling water, and just checking in. Now the food. The food came out very quickly! We all received a well filled bowl of rice. First out was the string beans, perfectly cooked, not droopy, and the flavors of garlic and hot peppers. Even though the peppers were there the heat was not overpowering at all. Next was the shredded pork with garlic sauce. The textures of the pork and bamboo shoots were a nice contrast and the sauce was perfectly balanced and craveable. The special grilled lamb, I was told, was some of the best in the city. It was tender and well spiced. Even when he said he was full he just couldn't stop eating it. For the dim sum order we got the shrimp dumplings, soup dumplings, scallion pancake, and sesame balls and they brought a soy sauce and a chili oil with them. The shrimp dumplings were tender but the dough was pretty sticky. I think this is normal and they were tasty with some of the oil on them. The scallion pancakes were very thin and gummy, this is the only thing we ordered that I would not get again. The soup dumplings were very small but packed a lot of flavor. The dough did stick together a bit so unfortunately some of the soup did leak out. The sesame balls were the hit and we're just the right amount of sweetness that we considered them desert. They were large, at least 2" in size, with a wonderful sesame seed covered exterior and a soft, sweet center. Chuan Jiang Hao Zi is a wonderful somewhat hidden gem. If you want traditional Chinese cuisine including all the different offal they have it and I would totally try it here over anyone else if I was brave enough. Portions were a good size for the price. I highly recommend checking them out!

Ambiance/Atmosphere: it's small and clean on the inside. When really busy it can feel pretty crowded. Food: The food here is really good. I don't eat Chinese food all that often, but when I do this is definitely the go to. Orange chicken: excellent tang with the subtle orange flavor and always fresh and vibrant. Crispy, juicy, and every bite full of flavor. Best orange chicken I've had. General Tso: A delicious rendition of this classic American Chinese dish. Crispy, flavorful, spicy, but still a slight sweetness. This is a must order every time. Honey chicken: The crispy honey chicken is really good. The crispy salty sweet chicken is a perfect subtle sweet pallet cleanse from the other more savory items. Chicken and broccoli: An excellent pairing with fried or white rice, plenty of chicken and broccoli in the portion. Flavor is good and not oily, but really just your average chicken and broccoli. Cream cheese wontons/crab Rangoon: Crab Rangoons are my mom's favorite and so whenever they're on a menu it's a must grab and Dragon Village executes these perfectly. Great pairing with the sweet and sour sauce. A delicious balance between a slight sweet and savoriness of the cream cheese filling with the crispy shell. Egg rolls: The egg rolls are delicious. Crispy, flavorful, and packed they truly are a fantastic pairing.

When I ordered combination rice (egg included per menu), there was no egg. This has happened more than once so it's not a one time thing. Very nice people own/run it so I don't like to complain but they do need to work on the quality of their dishes.
