Our service was great and the place was cute. I was overly excited when I found out they had 2 kinds of GF bread, GF pancakes and Gf waffles. I got the pork chop and eggs, added American fries, and GF pancake. My excitement dwindled when the food arrived. Everything lacked flavor. No salt or pepper or seasoning of any kind on any of the food. The pancake was dry. I know GF is sometimes hit or miss. This was a miss with dry crumbly center. My potatoes were ok. It's like they were sliced potatoes, then randomly chopped. One side was crunchy and one side was white. At least they weren't both sides one of those ways. Portion size was ok, but not great, when you think my breakfast not including coffee was $16, it really wasn't worth it. Mine came on a platter and it could have been served on the smaller dinner plate with room to spare still. My boyfriend said his turkey avocado omelet and English muffin were good. The omelet was quite large! My other friend had biscuits and gravy with eggs and hasbrowns. He said it was ok. It also looked like a good portion. read more

My mom wanted to revisit memory lane where we mother grew up. The first stop was always Bonduel before Cecil. She uses a walker which can be tricky. One needs a flat surface, space to move the walker around, a handicap friendly bathroom with a bar. Yes, these things should be but are not. This place checks all the marks. In addition, plus hospitality and fresh food. I can still taste that Mediterranean omelet! My mom had potato pancakes which were fresh. If you are in this area, stop by for a visit. Wow, what a great place. On my first visit to Bonduel, my family and I had lunch at the Hungry Bear. We enjoyed their terrace, and food that tasted like a good homemade meal. Sue had the turkey, avocado omelette and stuffed French toast. There was nothing left on either of our plates when we were finished. We were on a day trip to Shawano and decided not to shop hungry. Hungry Bear cafe was right on our route and after our lunch there it might be a regular stop for us. First things first - GARLIC CHEESE CURDS. It tastes like you wrapped curds in straight up garlic bread. I would come back solely for these curds. My cousin and I both had burgers which were cooked medium but still juicy and generously topped with cheese and bacon. I got a side salad which was the only thing I wouldn't recommend due to the whole stalk of green onion and huge chunks of everything else making it difficult to eat. The seafood chowder had great flavor and the broth wasn't just milk gravy like most places. Great atmosphere, home town diner vibes. Lots of menu options. Big fan of Hungry Bear! Great little locally owned cafe right off the main highway in Bonduel. Service is quick and friendly. Portions are generous. Prices are affordable. On our visit I ordered the stuffed hashbrowns and was not disappointed. As the name implies it is hashbrowns stuffed with green peppers, onions, tomato, ham and cheddar. Topped with 2 eggs made your way. It comes with a side of toast. Everything came as ordered and was so good. A great way to start the day! My only complaint is the coffee was not very good. It was very watered down and flavorless. But I think that is true for many cafe/diner type places. Highly recommended for anyone passing through area. Will definitely be back soon! read more

The first time I came here I knew I'd return. Since then I've been back many times, never disappointed. On our way home from a vacation we stopped here for breakfast and it was once again superior. Admittedly breakfasts aren't that hard to pull off so this was successfully done. With my eggs I had some hash browns that were, well, perfect and decided on an English muffin. A pleasant surprise was the latter came with home made strawberry preserves, yum. And the small steak I ordered with my breakfast also was perfect. I have a habit of only drinking good coffee so it was a few minutes before I realized that, yes, the coffee was good. The only problem was there was no room for pie. The Hungry Bear is an exceptional family restaurant in the small community of Bonduel. The Village is lucky to have such a nice little cafe to call their own. We frequently pass through and enevitably someone in the car asks if we're going to stop at Hungry Bear. There is a very up north kind of feel about the place especially with all the bear decorations. A favorite of my children is the after meal treasure chest, offering a candy treat if the siblings managed to get along. Very good breakfast and they offer it all day. It's never to late in the day for breakfast. On Sundays they have a broasted chicken dinner special that is second to none. Even the Friday fish fry is a solid offering. The prices are reasonable for any menu offering. A nice selection of dessert offering but my personal favorite is the Amish bluberry fry pie Definitely a casual family friendly restaurant. The staff is always friendly and attentive to your needs. Keep up the good work Hungry Bear. read more

Oh my god. Best. On-the-road find. EVER. Get the Bonduel burger! (Is that how you spell it?) My boyfriend and I make a 9-hour drive from Minneapolis to Cheboygan and back about 2-3 times per year and finally decided to stop somewhere for dinner that didn't require a drive-thru window. Thank god we did. First, one of the best burgers I've had. The options are endless. They offer all kinds of toppings and even pretzel buns. Which is insane. The fries are also incredible. Regular is cooked super crispy, with an almost batter-fried consistency and the sweet potato fries are out of this world, too. If they decided to cook the sweet potatoes in sticks like the regular ones instead of waffle fries though, I'd be in absolute heaven. The bang for your buck here is insane--You can get a practically artisan cup of hot cocoa for under 2 bucks and the burgers are between $5 & $6.50 (sides not included, but still great). We slipped in about 40 mins before close and everything was out hot-and-ready. I didn't want to make them stay open for us, so we hurried up and hit the road, but if they had a few extra minutes, I would've ordered like 4 other dishes. We all left with clear eyes, full hearts, and stuffed stomachs. Can't lose. My only regret is that I didn't tote a yeti and order more for the road! Will absolutely be back. Fantastic food and great service! After spending the morning buying a pontoon boat in Shawano, we were famished and decided to stop here on the way home. It did not disappoint! We had the fried pickles, French fries, sweet potato waffle fries, the chicken dumpling soup, and various sandwiches (patty melt, chicken tender melt, and a BLT.) Everything was hot, fresh, and tasty. Reasonable prices, too. We would have tried the pie but were too full after everything else. We'll definitely make the trip back. read more

Affordable, good, country café comfort food. I had breakfast (served all day): an egg, bacon, and biscuit with sausage gravy. The biscuit with sausage gravy was my favorite. It tasted remarkably close to my mother's gravy and her's is the best. It's the first gravy I have ever called delicious besides my mom's. The bacon wasn't great. I am pretty picky about my bacon though. I would choose the sausage next time. My husband had the lunch special: turkey, bacon and swiss on a pretzel bun. Served with potato chips. He enjoyed his sandwich; only ate a few chips. I always glance around at what other people order and the burger and fries were a popular item ordered. I will definitely try that if we make it back here. The staff was friendly and the service was quick! Their demeanor while working with and without customers was very professional. I will say my only complaint is that we smelled of grease on our clothes & hair even after driving back to the hotel with our windows down. Great place to get breakfast. Went on a weekend, the place was almost packed(about two tables open). Sat down. Staff was very nice and pleasant, the building is very nice. I ordered eggs, meat, hash browns and toast. The portions were big and I could not finish. Everything was very good and filling.
