A lot of my life with my dad has been spent in a rush. Rushing from what I never really understood til I got older. We've found ourselves in this particular moment, him 5 years sober, me 26 and often confusing experiences of pain and pleasures on the thin ice of addiction. Today we are in wisconsin, visiting family, having coffee to stay at a cafe my grandma recommended we go to. She has my tiny brother, so it's just my dad and I, how things were for 16 years. We work as a team to find free parking. We love doing team things to save a dollar, a minute, or find a loophole. We decide on our coffees, and when the barista asks if we'll have them to stay my dad says yes, which brings a smile to my mind. He suggests we share this berry oat bar thing. One thing I find so charming about his sobriety is his need for sweets. It's somewhere in trainspotting 2 that mark tells spud "you'll always be an addict. You just have to find something else to get addicted to." I think of this when i see him with a big fat bowl of ice cream after dinner and a new exciting hobby every other month. I think of this when I consider what my life might be like if I decide to admit some things to myself sooner than later. But right now it's me and my father, having coffee to stay in cute mugs, no rushing, no changing things, just farting around in a midwest summer. read more

Stopped by here on a recent road trip for some coffee and bites. They have an array of baked goodies as well as other bites (breakfast wraps, avo toast, and the like). They have a sign that if you want something off the food menu (beyond the baked goodies), it takes 15-20 minutes, so a note that though most places avo toast would be a quick bite--not so here (we were taking our food to go and waited nearly 30 minutes--they were kind and offered us a bonus baked goodie for the wait, but still--if you're in any kind of rush at all--stick with the baked goodies--my entire party was done with their coffee before the food even arrived). I ordered the avocado toast which came on what tasted like fresh made sourdough. It was good! For my coffee, I got a caramel mocha made with almond milk, which was also good. Came here on a Thursday for lunch and were very impressed by the food options. The atmosphere was pretty chill, as most people there seemed to be working on laptops. We were also kind of shocked by how much seating space there is with the two levels. We ordered at the counter and got the spinach and mushroom tofu scrambler, the southwestern wrap, kids grilled cheese, and a vegan peanut butter bar. The scrambler wrap hit the spot and I really like that they have an egg or tofu option. The southwestern wrap was nice and crispy and really benefitted from the sour cream. The kids meal was a nice portion size, if your an adult and just want grilled cheese, I'd say it's the way to go since you also get animal crackers of very fun shapes. Our favorite was the elephant or kangaroo. The peanut butter bar was also very tasty and large. Can definitely be broken apart for snacks for a few days. Overall, good food, nice staff, and relaxed atmosphere. Definitely recommend this as a stop in Green Bay. read more

This is a very nice and popular coffee and tea shop in downtown Green Bay. There is ample street parking. The interior has a nice mix of couches and coffee tables. Two top and four top tables and chairs. There in an upper and lower level. The coffee if very good. We ordered a flat white and cappuccino. We also ordered several breakfast sandwiches and a spinach feta wrap. All were made fresh after ordering. The service was friendly and pretty fast. We were there on a Sunday morning so it was quite busy. The building was an automotive and tire store in the 50's I believe. Kavarna kept the cool industrial features and turned them into the back drop for a neat coffee house. read more

Kavarna has been a staple of mine for years! One of, if not my all time favorite spot to get lunch in Green Bay! The menu is extensive and has tons of options for anyone. Came here with my vegan sister in law. There was plenty of seating for the 5 of us. I thought I saw they had deli meat options but this is fully vegan/vegetarian. The beanie butter chocolate pie bar was very decadent. The Greek egg wrap was very tasty. I liked how the tortilla was a bit crispy and the feta was perfect with the fluffy eggs. Wifi: for the longest time I went here and the WiFi was really spotty and wouldn't connect, but they've recent fixed the issue and it works SUPER well. Kavarna was one of the very first places we visited when we were looking to move to Green Bay back in 2003 and I went many times over the next 14 years we lived there. Some years back they moved to a larger location north of Walnut and one of the best features of the larger location is the expansive downstairs area which is where I met three friends during a recent visit. Good vegetarian and vegan options and scrumptious baked goods! On this visit, I wanted something a bit healthier so tried the breakfast cookie. Dense with peanut butter, chocolate chips, seeds and some other ingredients, it was good - not overly sweet and satisfyingly filling. Paired it with Mexican hot chocolate (the steamed milk used to be my go-to beverage but I wanted to try something different). Friends each had different hot beverages and each came with a nice design (heart, GB Phoenix, etc). We were not at all rushed and enjoyed time catching up. Glad to see the business is still thriving all these years later! read more

Easy street parking in front. A little busy around 10am on Saturday but still plenty of tables open. Ordered a latte, 2 cold brews, 2 vegan wraps, and 1 non-vegan wrap. Then we sat down and waited, and waited, and waited. 45 minutes we waited for our 3 wraps to come out. They were not very big but had good flavor. Our drinks were long gone by the time our food came out and we didn't want to wait spend more time here trying to order something else to drink. We're not sure if our order had just been lost or what happened but it was a disappointing experience to wait so long. We understand a lot of places are very short staffed during the pandemic but no one even bothered to update us about what was taking so long. For the price of the food for the amount you get and how long everything took I doubt we'll be returning. read more

I always really like spending time here when I travel back home to Green Bay. Kavarna has such a comfy space that's perfect for hanging out with a few friends and catching up. I usually just get a bottomless cup of coffee and call it good. The other day my wife and I came in super early because she needed somewhere to spend the day working remotely. We decided to try out their breakfast, and I have to say I wasn't super impressed with what I got. If Kavarna as a whole is 5 stars, I would give my food 3. I'm normally super into French Toast, but it tasted mostly like lightly toasted bread with a dash of cinnamon on top. The fruity cream cheese filling was probably the best part, but couldn't really make up for it. I have a feeling it was just an experimental dish or something, though. I tried my wife's breakfast burrito and it was pretty awesome, so I won't completely knock them. Next time I'm hungry and stop in i'll have to give them another shot. Regardless, Kavarna is exactly what you want in a coffeehouse. It's quiet with a great atmosphere, serves food, and most importantly, has great coffee that you can sit and drink all day long for just a couple dollars. read more

I LOVE getting off the highway on a road trip & discovering great local places like this! Charming atmosphere in a historic downtown building. Delicious coffee with a nice variety of specialty drinks & syrups. And very nice food. We had a spinach & portobello breakfast wrap and a breakfast cookie. Only criticism was the speed of service on the wrap - we finished everything else long before it came. But that meant it was hot & fresh as well as delicious. Hello breakfast cookie. Of course also I felt compelled to try all three of the brewed coffees available on the day we visited (and would have tried the decaf too if I'd had more time to kill). The bottomless coffee mug deal probably could lead a person to spend a whole afternoon here, reading, sipping coffee, noshing on various vegan and gluten-free foods. Coffee was strong and plenty bold, just how I like it. Somehow I was able to slug down two cups and take my third to go in about 40 minutes. Walk towards the back of what looks like a small coffeehouse and check out the giant lower level area, for live music and events. No lack of seating here. Great relaxed vibe and crowd. Oh and the food? Usually I like a little more protein in my options (and wasn't aware of the Parisi's connection... though now that I think of it there were a bunch of people mingling to the left of the entrance). Anyway, we were very satisfied with the grilled Artichoke Pizza and Gypsy Vegetable Soup (which also came with a nice hunk of grilled bread)... I made a mental note to grill as much bread as I could from this point forward until I can return. And the breakfast cookie was genius! read more
