An absolute gem of a place. We happened upon it when in the area. For its small size it is incredible how many amazing staple items and specialty items as well as INCREDIBLE Prepared food is available there. We had breakfast and lunch both from the little home cooked take out. They carry incredible organic baked goods by Betlehem Bakery. We stocked up on a bunch of delicious baked goods including some gluten free. I could have eaten their prepared GF veggie quiche for every meal for the rest of my life. Haha. Organic, local items and produce. Kind owner. When we were there we saw a family come in with their young toddler. He immediately welcomed them and said I saved this for you! And it was a bag of unpackaged potatoes and a little empty basket on their produce shelf for him to go unpack. He was delighted and went over to do his big boy job. So cute! Everyone was very friendly. A true gem!!!!!! We will be back again when we are in the area & I won't be bringing any food with us, knowing this place is here! read more

A cute little store that has organic and sustainable vegetables, fruits, baked goods, some prepared foods and other grocery stores Not everyone can afford to buy better products but this place offers some coop deals that are comparable to major chains. Additionally some of their vegetables seemed also on par. So why not patronize a small business especially for those items that are similar to the big box stores? There's a smallish parking lot but I've never seen it filled up anyway. The staff is helpful and seem to care about their work. read more

They have super delicious ALL Organic chicken soup that I love: really 100% organic ... not like all the others where when you read the small print on the ingredient list it turns out that the chicken meat isn't organic. This place is terrific. It's got a great variety of fresh and organic products. Produce comes from local farms which is great. The CO-OP also has a wide variety of natural remedies, essential oils, cosmetics and toiletries. Whenever I'm in the area I stop in for an organic juice or smooths or just some sustainable items I'm not able to find elsewhere like clean candles, truly organic fresh baked bread, essential oils (which is great in your bath for your skin and mood) or CBD chocolate bar for inflammation or days your momma warned you about. With very little access to real food in a fast food instant world, this is great place to get a good tasty hot meal of you are like me and don't spend much time in the kitchen. This place is a hidden gem. They sell well priced, well organized organic and local dairy, meat and produce and bulk products like spices, nuts and grains. It's a great place to shop, it has a very chill vibe and I'm usually in and out with my weekly shop in 15 minutes. They sell baked goods from some local bakeries, like Threefold Cafe, freshly prepared foods and juices, and organic/environmentally friendly cleaning products, wellness products and skincare. If you are looking local organic sustainable food hungry hollow is a must if in the area. Easy to find and also ample parking so whether I come at lunch time or later in the day I don't have to worry. I especially enjoy this place in the summer as I frequently pop in for lunch and will eat my sandwich or salad outside by their picnic tables. Even though they are off a busier road that particular section doesn't draw a lot of traffic so it's nice and quiet and the store has a nice covering of trees behind to give you a sense of nature. I'm a big fan of their egg salad on rye with lettuce, tomatoes and sprouts. Like HUGE fan. Right when you enter the store they have pre made sandwiches and salads on the left so easy to grab. As you continue on they have soups (love when it gets chillier out) and warm sandwiches, burgers etc down on the right and their fresh produce in the back. I mainly stick to the first isle and make my way down and don't typically venture elsewhere. The store is tiny. You can't compare anywhere to a standard grocery store. But I can get my breakfast lunch and all the fruits and veggies I need. The most important thing to me is that I know the fresh food had limited mileage to get there and that is grown without pesticides antibiotics. That equals fresh and noticeably tasty. read more

Came here today for the first time- I LOVE wandering an organic/health Mart for an hour! Wide variety of good brands and products, from skincare to candles to supplements to herbs to produce to meat to baked goods, packaged goods, etc. , prices what you would expect in this kind of store, but Their monthly specials were a good deal (avocado mayo for $7). Hello, from the student perspective! As a medical student, I am not at the point of my life where I am able to afford everything organic (sticking to the Clean15/organic DirtyDozen until I make $$). Also, it's my personal decision not to care too much about GMO (Monsanto-type business practices are despicable, but GMO goods are fine nutritionally). So, with this in mind, what do I like about this little co-op? First of all, they have fun and delicious SNACKS! They have snacks I've never seen before and it has become very fun and exciting to treat myself to a snack here every once in a while. They have interesting chips, unique drinks, and a fun little bakery section for those sweet-tooth times. It's hard to choose what to get sometimes! (Optional snack-related aside: You know how sometimes people pine for "Mexican" Coca-Cola, which is sweetened with sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup as most soft drinks are in the USA? Even with my limited budget, I do my best to avoid high fructose corn syrup for biochemistry-verified reasons, and I don't think I've seen any snacks or drinks with this ingredient. Nice!) I also like looking through their rotating CO+OP DEALS. Eco-pacs of Nature's Path cereal for $6, Santa Cruz organic juices for about $1.50, the list goes on... It's kind of fun to see what will happen to be on sale! The BULK DRY GOODS and BULK SPICES section are well-stocked in organics, clean, and definitely wallet-friendly. Sometimes I have a hard time finding a certain grain or spice from another store, but I've almost always been able to get what I wanted here (except Berbere spices but I'm okay with that). I also really love that they have a diverse offering in eco-friendly CLEANING supplies! I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but I also am very comforted that they have a HOT FOOD section where I can get some healthier prepared food, as opposed to fast food or pizza, on those days when I just can't get myself to cook/prepare something. Truly, if I went on a shopping extravaganza here, I would probably exceed my food budget for the month, but even students can enjoy the co-op by shopping smart. It's so cute in here and the people (customers and employees) are nice! If I lived in the area, I would get myself a membership to support this lovely community and expand the options of "student-pocketbook-friendly" things in the Co-op, but for now, I just hang out here when I'm nearby. read more

Love this community grocery store! Friendly service, good selection, cooked foods, great hours. So much better than large supermarkets where half of the products contain GMO, corn syrup or unhealthy additives. Great atmosphere to shop with your children for "real" food. Nice to sit outside on a sunny day and enjoy one of there prepared foods or just have coffee. read more

I have been coming here for years, over 10 years and in all that time I have never had a bad experience. The people who work there are extremely pleasant and knowledgeable and the store itself is very organized and clean. The prepared food is AMAZING!!! I eat my lunch and dinner there as much as possible! I love the produce dept, I always prefer to buy my produce from there rather than a supermarket as I feel it is so much fresher and full of more flavor. I have loved the co-op for years- since it was about 1/2 the size it is now (and still wonderful!) and I love it even more since they built additions to it. I always feel right at home when I walk in the door, and although this may sound backwards, I feel like a kid in a candy store when I find all the little healthy goodies I can never seem to find anywhere else. My last trip I nearly squealed out loud when I saw they were selling fresh fiddle-heads in their produce section (I had recently been searching for them with no luck). I know that my wallet will be empty by the time I leave this place, but its always totally worth it! It feels great to support the local community (take a peek at all the cool event/class postings they hang near the registers!) and this is a great place to do just that! Plus they always have a great little selection of ready-to-eat items that taste even better if you take the time to eat them on the outdoor picnic tables and see all the friendly, interesting and worldly customers who come and go! :-) read more

I've been a customer here since it was located out of Barn on Hungry Hollow Road. That was 25 years ago and It has changed a lot since then. It's now a proper store with lots of parking and outside seating to enjoy the weather and healthy food. What sets this place apart from other health food stores is they do their homework and try to support the companies that are: Local Farm To Table Organic/Bio Dynamic Not just in it for the $ and riding the Organic Wave for profit. These days, all the big corporations want in on the Organic scene so you may think what you are buying is wonderful, but turns out it may be supporting Coca Cola Stockholders etc. Hungry Hollow takes out a lot of that guesswork so when I buy something there, I really feel like I'm supporting the local economy and the environment. Love this place, it is a new favorite. I have been looking up CSA's and local food producers recently and I always seem to stumble upon Hungry Hollow Co-op but never found a chance to go. Then this past weekend I went to the Union Square Greenmarket and bought the most delicious milk from Milk Thistle Farm. When I looked up that farm to find other places to buy their milk, guess where I stumbled upon yet again! You guessed it, Hungry Hollow. So I took that as an overwhelming sign that this was my kinda place and took a drive over at lunch yesterday. It was larger than I expected with a few picnic tables out front. Once I entered, I realized this is a true organic, back to the earth movement kinda place. It was much larger than other co-ops/farm stands I had been to in college, and more like a small market with a variety of products. That's when I fell in love. I bought the above mentioned Milk Thistle Farm milk, a container of beautiful multi-colored heirloom cherry tomatoes, and a few random household items that I needed. I will be back weekly for similar shopping trips. There are so many other things to mention about this place but I can't get them all across during this review. I used to love this place! I used to love grabbing lunch or dinner from the back of the store. They changed kitchen management and the food selection has drastically changed (if you want to grab some hot food from the hot bar, etc.). They used to label vegan items and had so many to choose from. Now it's meat, mac n' cheese, just overall unhealthy, nonvegan stuff. The grocery component offers a great selection, but it's so expensive I have started going elsewhere as the vegan options have decreased. Obviously not everyone is looking for healthy, vegan food, but this is my personal opinion. read more

This is a really nice Co op...a good variety of foods are offered here, as well as supplements. I also enjoy the kind people who work there. I only have one small peeve... sometimes the packaged salads are mislabled...I quickly picked up what was labeled a Waldorf salad, and found out later it was actually just a garden salad. Another time, I picked up a breakfast wrap , which said tomato/spinache /egg...no spinache... It was still delicious but slightly disappointed. I'm sure it's very busy in the kitchen early on. The prepared food quality has gone down, with a drastic increase in price. and just today i was charged OVER $5.00 for a can of tuna fish. I like the Co-op, but they are very unsanitary. People are allowed to sample the soup. While getting the sample, it is impossible to do with-out soup dripping down over their fingers back in the soup pot. People should not be allowed to get their own soup. I'm surprised the Health Dept. hasn't closed them down. read more

The Hungry Hollow Co-op organic food market, conveniently located on Chestnut Ridge Road in Chestnut Ridge/Spring Valley is the area's most well-stocked specialty store; featuring fresh vegetables, organic milk and meats from its own community farm and from other organic food suppliers. There is a wonderful selection of homemade soups, sandwiches, meals and breads, cooked fresh daily. The staff is delightful and knowledgeable. Whether it's a plate of hot baked flounder or a cup of cheddar broccoli soup (or both!), the Co-op is the place to go! (If you have time, visit their close-by farm. The kids will love the cute calves still weaning off of their mommies, and the proud bulls valiantly, but nicely, protecting their families!!) In the summer, there's also a pond available within walking distance that's constructed to resemble a beach; including lifeguards!! A health conscious shoppe in a family-friendly environment! Go. I love the Co-op and the people there are terriffic except one "nervous and Jerky guy" named Skip. He walks around eating everything in sight, acting like he is really busy, but he actually doesn't do much. He gives me the creeps. I guess every group has one bad apple. My family just loves this place - the vibe, the fresh food, the cooked food. Friendly staff. Super organic selection. Local food sources.

For years i would have said a resounding 5 stars but i actually feel 3 stars at this point. We have been coming here for a long time and in the last few years watched the place change for the worse. Recently, all the familiar and excellent staff have left or been let go - we are amazed as they have always been courteous, helpful and knowledgable. The new staff is younger so it must be a question of paying less. Saving on salaries should not be an issue as customer service should be a number one priority. We are very sad to loose our friendly, sometimes daily exchanges at the store with the former staff. Also, the emphasis on healthy food has gone way downhill. They now sell cold cuts where there used to be fresh soups offered in containers. A vegan or vegetarian is faced with looked at meat based products in the same refrigerated case. Just before Thanksgiving a huge refrigerated case was introduced into the back vegetable area filled with large quartiles of meats. It used to be a place where one could go and count on numerous labeled hot vegan and vegetarian offerings with perhaps one other dish of fish or chicken. Now, it is the reverse and most of the vegan and vegetarian dishes are made with hot spices so that they are rendered almost inedible for some. We have suggested that they keep a container of hot pepper on the side so that those that prefer it can add it but to no avail. We have spent hundreds of dollars weekly in this store but might have to go elsewhere if the tone and quality of the place does not improve. We have been long time loyal members of Hungry Hollow and find these changes heart breaking. The board should rethink their priorities and resume what was once a good thing. read more
