Having heard about Stew Leonard's with the same gushy descriptions that people typically reserve for Trader Joe's, my husband and I finally made our first visit this past summer. We get it now. It's hard to encapsulate the joy of this market in words. Is it the windy aisles that make you feel like you're getting lost in a land of yummy things? Is it the cheesy animatronics that don't seem to add much value to the shopping experience, but then you catch yourself singing the avocado song hours later? The fresh, made-in-house goods that you couldn't find anywhere else, like the cider donuts, popcorn, breads, or cheeses? Or the shopper's program that rewards visits with free servings of some of the best soft serve ice cream I've ever had? It's all of the above. It adds up to a shopping experience that feels a lot like shopping at Target, where you vow to buy one thing and end up finding at least five more things that catch your fancy. Stew Leonard's has a rich history, with its roots as a small, family-owned dairy farm, so the cheese and ice cream game is unsurprisingly strong (see note on the soft serve above). But they do other things well. The breads are fresh and amazing, and the produce is incredibly fresh. The prepared foods section is also quite enticing. I once went so gaga on samples of a chopped veggie salad that I immediately went back to buy two. If you didn't just hear that I got excited about a SALAD, then you need to hear it again: ya'll, they managed to get me excited about a bowl full of chopped, cruciferous greens. Other notable sections include the wine and liquor section and the hot foods section, which has a lot of fun options but falls a little short of what you might find at Whole Foods. Even when we come around midday, some things look a little stale, dried, and sad. Some of our buys have been disappointing. Some boneless chicken wings turned out to have pretty processed and bready-tasting meat, and my husband and I have tried several prepared pasta meals that were extremely bland. Always love to come to SL for fresh grocery and hot food station. The veggies and fruits are in good quality. Bakery section always smells so good. Meat and frozen sections are full of choices. Also there are drinks, snacks, ready-to-go food etc. Hot food station is another big reason that we visit. Salmon is cooked perfectly. Brussels sprouts and mixed veggies are seasoned nicely. We use self checkout a lot. A staff is always there if you have some issues. Very efficient and quick. They have regular checkout line as well. read more

I am not really sure what all the hype is about this place. I will say the produce and meat appears to be fresh and of good quality, but it's wildly overpriced. If you're looking for one stop shopping for good foodstuffs then maybe this appeals to you. I just find that my local markets have as many options for generally better prices. That said I very much enjoyed the dancing avocado girls and other moving displays. Lol. I'd come again for those. But not to shop. We ordered a large order of pumpkins, bales of hay and other decorations for an elementary school class Halloween party. We were promised a specific delivery time. An hour after this delivery time, the order had not yet arrived. Whoever was delivering the items was over an hour late because of "traffic." Really? On a regular day, it's a 20 minute drive from Stew Leonard's to the school on local roads. Are you really telling us that the heavy rush hour traffic on the little streets of Bergen County has delayed your delivery by more than an hour?? Frankly, I find this completely unacceptable. Came in for some food shopping with my wife as we like certain specific items here. When my wife saw the salad we like was not in the display she asked a lady in the back salad and fruit area if she could make the garden salad with iceberg and no onion for us- she told us they don't do that or use iceberg in their salads. Considering we have also asked for the tossed salad this way many times and never had an issue made it clear she was lying and just didn't want to help us. Customer is always right are the cornerstones of their success and unfortunately this employee ruined it for us. Lots of other items out of stock early also- the pinwheels, strawberries and guacamole. Teriyaki chicken breasts looked nice but they were way overcooked and I couldn't enjoy eating it after I warmed it up. read more

**This review is only for their ice cream** I've never actually shopped at Stew Leonard's before... but while I was walking through Paramus Park mall, I noticed people eating delicious-looking soft serve ice cream near the entrance. So naturally, I HAD to get one for myself on a hot summer day. Yes, I get tempted by food easily. The ice cream kiosk is located near the registers. The menu is pretty straight forward. They have 6 flavors (vanilla, chocolate, pineapple, coconut, strawberry, pistachio) along with fat-free vanilla and chocolate. You have the option of getting a twist/mix of two flavors, but they have to be from the same machine. You can choose between a cone or cup. They have additional charges for toppings. I got the "Pina Colada" flavor in a small cup ($3.50), which is basically a twist of pineapple dole flavor + coconut. The soft serve was creamy and light. The flavors were on the subtle side. I wish the pineapple could have been more tarty and the coconut more rich, but it was still a good pick-me-up. I already have my eyes on trying other flavors! read more

I've heard about Stew Leonard's and for the longest time, have been wanting to visit. I passed the Stew Leonard's sign when in the area and was so excited! The store is huge! Much larger than I expected. The things that stand out are those under their own brand. I bought their pre-marinated buffalo wings- very good (and easy to prepare). I love their pasta sauce- very tasty! The bakery section with their own brand of products is also solid. I got the apple cider donuts and they are better than some of the farms I go to. The baguette bread (their brand) tasted fresh (and was warm when I got it). I just didn't like the store layout too much. It's a large store but a lot of it is a one way path so you have to go all the way around to get to a section. I noticed there were a few shortcuts here and there where ppl opened a gap between products. read more

We came back again for the butter lobster rolls BCI see it was so delicious the last time we tried it. Disappointed! It was a Sunday, so I assume lobsters were maybe from Saturday or even Friday because the texture was too rubbery! Our rolled was not as packed with lobster meat this time. Interesting supermarket with tons of robotic animals that sing and dances for declorations. The prices of items seem to little higher than average grocery store, but they have so many different sections that you can find almost everything food needs here (sushi, cheese, wine, pizza, etc) The service was pretty quick and cashiers are friendly and helpful. 10/10/23 Update: You can always pickup a variety of wonderful food at Stew Leonard's. They had an array of pies. I was mainly interested, in a pumpkin pie. Unfortunately, I did not see any on display. At the bakery counter, a woman named Monisha assisted me. She told me a pumpkin pie was in the oven. In addition, it would be ready in a few minutes. She told me the pie was $10.99. I was sold! : D (Turned out to be one of the best pumpkin pies I've ever had. The crust was very good too!) Besides the pumpkin pie, I picked up some wonderful pink honey gold pineapple chunks, crystallized ginger and Angus shaved roast beef. Today I pick up an small prepared Greek salad from Stew Leonard's. $9.99 Not my first time and today...what a disappointment! First, it was mostly lettuce with very few small cucumber pieces, few chopped red pepper and few red onions plus small amount of crumble up feta cheese. It Does not compare against Trader Joe's Greek salad which sales for $3.99 with a bigger variety of vegetables, cheese and their own dressing. The food was delicious and they had many different stations throughout the party. The duck and cow were fun and danced with the kids. The cake was good and well decorated. Within the last year, I've turned into a super fan of Stew Leonard's. I never knew about this regional grocery chain that began in CT, and over decades made its way into NY and North Jersey. But driving past the Paramus Park Mall and seeing the main entrance giving major farm vibes - this piqued my interest. So one day I went inside and BAM *mind-blown emoji* So I don't do the bulk of my grocery shopping here, but I stop in for select items or to hit up the premade food area during lunch time. I like to browse and look for locally sourced products/items or bakery items. I've found some specialty items not easily found in my main grocery store. Also, they have a pretty extensive alcoholic beverage selection sold here. If you have small kids, there's free entertainment with all the interactive displays throughout the store. Ok so Stew Leonard's is a grocery store, they've got all the grocery stuff you generally need (ie. potatoes, meats, boxes of mac and cheese, jars of tomato sauce, gallons of milk). BUT what Stew excels at - and is reallllly why you should visit asap - is their baked goods, hot-foods-to-go section and their wine/liquor selection. Lets review these one by one... Working backwards on that list -- SL's wine/liquor section is unlike any other grocery store wine/liquor section I've seen. It's massive, expansive with wines from alllll over the world and has excellent prices (both liquor and wine). It gives me Trader Joe* vibes with little description cards and staff recommendations which are, from my experience so far, spot on. Note: there is a beer section towards the back end of the store too... which is also pretty great especially if you're into craft beers + that "make your own 6-pack" option. If you're in the Paramus area and need some booze -- please give SL's a try. And while you're picking up said booze you should probably grab something to eat, right? How about a freshly made salad with balsamic glazed chicken, or a meatball 'grinder'**, chicken tenders, mac and cheese (which I haven't tried yet but looks incredibly cheesy), rotisserie chickens, soup, sushi. This last visit I noted an entire 'picnic' area with containers full of {pasta/potato/leafy} salads, pizza. Y'all get the idea, right? They have e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g in this prepared food area. They've also got a selection of delicious looking foods if you're hosting a little get together and need some apps -- ie. like the mini beef patties and chicken cordon bleu balls I picked up for this weekend, just bc. OK, and now we need something sweet -- so lets travel back over to the Bakery at Stew's. Ohmygosh THE BAKERY. We're talking about freshly made apple cider donuts (literally made in front of you), giant cookies***. The rolls... the snowball rolls, y'all. So. Soft. Like how do they even bake them so soft!? The items listed above are a few favs... but they also have cakes galore, fresh bagels (shoutout to the french toast bagels!), croissants, apple sticks, muffins, pies, loaves of freshly baked bread. I've never stepped foot into Stew Leonard's until this location, and boy, what a view it is the moment stepped in. The space is huge with a lot of inventory including many food products you'll see, along with food stations, including pizza, seafood, cheeseburgers, and also many other prepared foods to take. The store looks very clean and kept up, and enough workers are on the floor ready to assist when needed. The atmosphere is very nice, with cool decor, and also features TV characters moving around in one spot hanging. It's pretty awesome to see it setup like this - it gives the store character. The checkout has enough lanes to provide, one for the mall entrance and also the parking lot. Happy to make this stop for the joy of it!! read more

I've been wanting to go to Stew Leonard's for years, perhaps decades. Being from central/north Jersey I listen to mostly NY radio stations and I always here this heavily accented guy, Stew Leonard during commercial breaks. I used to tune him out thinking he was selling cars or tools, but one day I realized he was talking about... groceries?! Yes, groceries. I was stuck in bad holiday traffic today and knew I was passing a Stew Leonard's. Curiosity and the hope of waiting out some of the heavy traffic (didn't happen- Thanksgiving traffic is the worst!!) got the best of me and I finally came in. Just from the outside you know it's no regular grocery store, at least not one you'd see here in the northeast. There's a huge faux-silo on the outside. When you walk in there's a delightful smell, as you pass some of the highlighted items you arrive at the coffee counter and they have glazed nuts there.. bingo! That's where the smell is coming from. I stuck around for a few mins hoping to order a Coconut boba tea but unfortunately, no one came over to help. I saw several people pass me to man the opposite counter- ice cream, which is on the other side. I'm not sure If maybe the coffee counter doesn't have coverage at night or if the ice cream counter was super busy but it would have been nice to have been given some direction as I was clearly waiting to be helped and not one of the 3-4 employees that passed me greeted me. Granted, this is Tuesday before Thanksgiving so it's only a small strike. As I progressed through the store I quickly realized it's set up like a type of maze. This is very unique but I imagine frustrating if you're going in for a quick shopping trip. I started off strong with the picture taking but it became increasingly difficult so I didn't get a picture of each section. There are a ton of animatronics that sing and dance above your head. I think my son would have gotten a kick out of that. Biggest pros: -Vast and beautiful produce section, there were a lot of veg and fruits that are difficult to find in most grocery stores. -Many food service counters; bakery/bagels, BBQ, ice cream, coffee, deli, pizza and more -Very clean and pleasant bathroom (especially for a grocery store) Biggest cons: -the unique setup is interesting and an experience for sure- but can be inconvenient and confusing at times -the employees I came across weren't particularly friendly, if they noticed me at all, however again, I am reluctant to put much stock into this because it was likely busier than usual and they may have just been trying to survive the hoards of people I am sure they've seen the past few days. Who would have thought shopping can be so much fun. Literally stumbled upon this place and was greeted with 2 singing cows. A lady told us that are many buttons to push and since then we've met singing chickens, avocado.. you get the idea. I must admit that we didn't really go there to shop. We did hear the ice cream is very good and it is. They have several flavors which are unique pineapple, strawberry, pistachio, coconut. Pistachio actually does not contain nuts for those who have nuts allergy like my son. We got the dole pineapple whip and it was delicious. We got a few bagels for our trip and they are $1 each which is cheaper than our local shop rite. My wife says other things are on the pricey side. But you pay more for freshness and quality. And lastly, this place is huge and the workers there are very helpful and knowledgeable (at least the one who served us ice cream), we were concerned there maybe cross contamination with the pistachio since it's in the same machine as the strawberry which we were going to get. But she answered all our questions and told us there pistachio does not contain nuts. Though the ice cream may made in a factory that process nuts. read more

Stew Leonard's is a bit of a local grocery legend offering an upscale food as hero experience that focuses on outstanding meats, produce and private label products... to say nothing of their outstanding prepared foods. That said, if I lived in the area there's absolutely no way that I would go to the sprawling and chaotic Paramus Park Mall to do my weekly grocery shopping. It's the same reason I wouldn't venture to Yankee Stadium on game day just because there's an excellent Korean BBQ somewhere in the neighborhood. I really loved the store but to make it a weekly destination against traffic patterns that require Fast & Furious reflexes is a form of insanity that I am not willing to embrace. On a practical note, I have no idea what bedlam might await if you had the audacity to need groceries between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Black Friday seems like a great day to start that diet. So many positive reviews of Stew Leonard's....and now I know why! First of all, I feel so fortunate to have the only New Jersey Stew Leonard's location (As of today) near me and, second, it has changed my grocery shopping life foreverrrrrrrrr everrrrr...yes...foreverrr everrr. Stew Leonard's has truly turned their supermarket into a one stop shop and an experience that you'll want to re-live each and every weekend. From the moment you walk in through their main entrance, the aroma of the bakery hits you like cupid shooting an arrow through your nose. Like the movie said, they had me at HELLO. The supermarket is an ultra wide one way swiggly aisle so everyone heads in the same direction....or is supposed to. Before you get to the very first official section of the market though, customers pass by the coffee stand - just to make sure you get enough caffeine in you to spend quality time there. You won't have issues with spending time inside. I guarantee it. By the time you are all wired up, you're greeted by the very first section of the supermarket, which as I said earlier is the bakery. What better way to capture the hearts of customers than by laying out your most delectable and sweet smelling pastries and bakery goods (GENIUS!) The amazing smell absolutely fills the area and just possesses you to want to buy everything you lay your eyes on before you've even spent 2 minutes inside. It's the most captivating part of the market, but there are definitely areas for everyone (sort of like an amusement park). As you slowly work your way through the different sections - Produce, Dairy, Butcher Shop, Cheese, Seafood, Deli - you realize everything is so pristine and stacked so neatly that someone with OCD MUST HAVE organized it all (just kidding, but you get my drift). When you finally make it to the final aisle, you're greeted by the lovely site of pre-packaged meals, freshly made pizza, sub and Italian sandwiches, sushi, a made to order burger stand and a barbecue section. For those looking to make a day out of it and get a quick bite, the pizza is very, very reasonably priced - with Cheese, Mushroom, Pepperoni and Buffalo Chicken offerings. However, the burger barn is probably the most popular area, by far, for quick sit and go meals as they have a variety of burgers to choose from and all of them come with a drink and fries/sweet potato fries if you make it a combo - and YES, the burger and fries are actually really good here! And if all of that wasn't enough you cannot miss the massive Wine, Spirits and Beer section (along with Flowers) smack dab in the middle of the market as you work your way down the maze. When you've reached the end of this amazing ride and decide to finally check out, you will want to stop by the Ice Cream stand right by the cash registers. Did I say they know what they are doing? (GENIUS IDEA AGAIN) Who can resist soft serve ice cream served on a cone/cup or a perfectly spun shake before they leave or if they want to top off their meal? Recently discover this amazing supermarket. They have a great selection of groceries, baked goods, and hot foods. The store is super clean and well organized. I love their well priced lobster rolls. They even make them fresh with toasted buns with butter on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays! It's not the cheapest market but I find everything to be decently priced. they have a loyalty program that lets you earn points with your purchases towards soft serve ice cream. What a fun and pleasant place to shop for groceries! Not as crowded and chaotic as Costco which I am starting to dislike, nor is it as unwelcoming as Safeway. Sadly there are only a few stores. Food quality is high and selection just right. No need for 10 kinds of tomatoes right!?!? I have no need. Bakery is yum and am a fan of their muffins and cheesecake. Meat selection is spot on without an overwhelming selection which kills shopping in my opinion. Prices are fair/ good...In California everything is inflated in regards to pricing, so I noticed the difference. Fruits and veggies are nice and the hot and cold food sections just right again. What a nice place to casually do grocery shopping. I just wish everywhere else had this fun approach. Staff is staff as this is self serve but the few questions I had were handled professionally with a smile. Kudo's to Stew Leonard's! It is now my favorite place to shop for groceries! read more

Nothing more disgusting than getting ice cream and seeing the worker dig his hands into the sprinkles to put them on my kids ice cream. Yes, he was wearing gloves, but those same gloved hands were handling the register and money just prior to my order. (01/18/25 between 4:00-4:20) read more

A fun market that's designed to get you to walk through the entire store...and buy. Highlights are the prepared foods and bakery (with homemade donuts, scones, cookies, etc)...the ingredients are not the highest quality but there's a large selection. They don't have a lot of organic produce and their prices are typically not the lowest. They often have the Raos pasta sauce on sale which is the best deal around. Because it's in the mall, also convenient if you need to stop in there. read more

Stopping by this store has been on my to do list for awhile. Life had made it somewhat difficult, but I finally made it. This store is definitely a 3.5. They had a lot of premade salads and pre-seasoned meats, so it's a great place to stop at before a BBQ. The one thing I really didn't like was that the store is literally a maze. I had to walk down every aisle unless I was cutting into the alcohol department. This store isn't very close to my home, but it's not that far either. If I'm in the area I'd definitely stop by again and give them another chance. (definitely before hitting a BBQ.) read more

A quality grocery store, with so many different product types available. I actually prefer it over Whole Foods and stop n shop. Very neat and clean. So much variety of food items. Some of the highlights for me are: Huge bakery section Great collection of fruits Variety of wines Pre cooked/frozen/hot food Packaged dinner Deli section So many different types in cheese It's a huge store and takes a while to fully explore all the sections. Throughout the store they have many mechanical toys making animal sounds. Gives a firm like vibe and very entertaining for kids. They have rewards membership as well, free cone ice cream or coffee for every $100 spent. We actually bought some of their dinner items like honey glazed salmon, grilled jumbo shrimps and grilled chicken. They actually taste pretty good. We have very excited find a place nearby to buy our lunch/dinner packs for the week. read more

Having spent years in retail, I love going to higher end grocery stores. This was my first time going and upon entering it was like a maze, it almost felt like a casino where you can't find your way out. So much to look at, the organic vegetables and the meat section was very impressive. Love the prepared foods ready to take home and eat. read more
