Somehow every time I shop here something I buy is rotten/moldy/not good. Their cheese selection is massive but none of it is fresh or good. The cheese is always dry and tastes like the plastic it's wrapped in. The "high quality hot food" is all cheap stuff from Restaurant Depot. I'm always on the hunt to find new grocery stores. I was glad when I came across this place. I was passing by, and knew I needed to stop in. When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised. This place was very open, had an assortment of cheeses, breads, produce, grocery items, and more. I walked around the store, and I found a lot of specialty products that I've only found in some of the grocery stores around here. They have organic items and other items that aren't typically carried. When I checked out, I wanted to sign up for a frequent shopper card, but the cashier informed me that you need to spend $100 in order to sign up for a card, which I thought was strange. I might be back, but I am surprised they have a minimum you need to spend in order to get a store card. read more

I do most of my grocery shopping here. They have good produce and healthier options than many other grocery stores in the area. They have a good bakery and cheese section. I wish it wasn't so difficult to get out of their parking lot at rush hour but that's not their fault. read more

A decade + after first discovering this place, I am more impressed than ever with their diverse selection of prepared foods. A calamari salad and various sushi rolls earlier today certainly did not disappoint. Pricing is in line with other "gourmet markets;" check out service was efficient as usual, albeit not super "warm and fuzzy." Parking today was convenient as always--never a need to "hunt for a spot." Couple that with a location less than a minute off the highway, and Old World Food Market will remain a "go to" for "elevated road food" when in Rockland County. read more

No stars for you, I was derisively laughed at for asking about gluten-free items. The staff had little to no knowledge of gluten-free items. The three items I did see were available at any of the other grocery stores at a lower price point. They had some soups that were gluten-free, but not labeled, made in a facility with gluten products. read more

This is the best food market in the area .It has continued to improve and get stronger in what the patrons like. The food bar is very diverse and something for everyone.Sure some dish's are better than others but they are always improving and trying new things . Yes Prices are not cheap but this is not Costco and I can't say ShopRite is a bargain on everything . I love that we can have a specialty market like this in our area that carries items that others don't . I go here everytime when I stay at Hotel Nyack (see review) I absolutely love their choices. I feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I go. HOWEVER I will say this, be prepared to spend $$ because they are EXPENSIVE!!!!!! I bought a few things and spend nearly $65! I was like whew! Also some of the food please make sure that it's fresh! I was about to get some cucumber and tomatoes and I can tell it wasn't fresh because the cucumbers were soggy! That means they have been sitting there for days ( probably from Friday when I came the first time) plus some of the food you might need to throw some salt and peeper on just to make sure that it has flavor. All in all this is my favorite place to go because it's how I eat! If you are in the Nyack area, stop by to grab something if you don't want to go to a restaurant. read more

I am fascinated by the Old World Food Market. My daughter loves the fake plants on the wall when you enter, and it makes me feel a little like we are going to Narnia. They have a large focus on prepared foods, which look delicious but as a plant based family they don't have much for us. But if you're looking for what look like we'll prepared foods - give them a try! The rest of the grocery store is a very interesting mix of "I didn't know I even needed this, this or this!" and "are you kidding, they don't have THAT?!" While I am sometimes (sometimes, not always) surprised by what they don't have they have a cool selection of ethnic ingredients that is somehow deep and limited at the same time. Limited because they might have only 10 different Chinese items, but they'll have 10 different options for each one. The prices seem a little high, but the selection and even the experience feel worth it to me. The two downsides to Old World Food Market are: 1) you can only get their Loyalty card if you spend $100, and we spend $30-50 a week. Seems like a it's not really rewarding literal loyalty. 2) No one I've ever asked if they have something known if they do or not and know how to talk to customers. Twice I've gotten a disdainful look and "I don't know. Ask my boss." Uh...how about you ask your boss, or help me find your boss or...do anything other than blow me off like this. But I will end as I began: I'm fascinated by the Old World Food Market. Go to Narnia, enjoy the unusual shopping experience, and take home some yummy things to make/eat. read more

Pretty good place if you are near the area and looking for a gourmet grocery like you find in NYC. Oh, and they have the biggest hot food buffet I've ever seen in a market! It was quite impressive. Most of their selections are gourmet or imported. They feature a large cheese shop, fresh baked bread, and a fresh meat and seafood shop. They also have a large fresh vegetable area, which is separated slightly from the store in a nifty refrigerated room. As for prices, they were a bit high for being located in such a rural place. Maybe it's because a lot of their stuff is imported. Oh, and last thing: I'd like to send a special shout out to the staff. They were all super friendly and helpful. read more

Some of the staff is really mean spirited. I had unpleasant interactions several times already. Yesterday I came in early morning with my little dog in a bag because it was too cold out to leave him in my car, and when I went to pay, a guy stood at 3 feet of me with his phone in his hand to take a picture. I was so embarrassed. And I heard him call me Loca to his colleagues. This really hurt my feelings. This was so mean and uncalled for. They do a good job maintaining the place clean and the food very fresh. Prices tend to be higher so I pick and choose what I need - mostly fresh veggies and fruit. I also love their olives, fresh goat cheese, sea food selections and variety of grain breads. This establishment has quality food, and high prices. But my main complaint is the points system is not consistent or checkable. Or even functional at times. I had earned 1950 points, waiting to cross past 2000 points to get a $150 credit. However, on the day I went in and spent more money to prepare for the next visit when I would have the points, my total points was now magically 215 in stead of 2000 or more as it should have been. Then the usual disbelief at the register, the holding up customers just trying to buy food, the complete disinterest in trying to understand the issue. It has happened twice now. I will be shopping elsewhere. SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS. My bet is they get away with a lot of pay outs over there. Or just shop elsewhere. Very hard to park here anyway. read more

Avoid at all costs. Today's interaction with an abysmally rude employee was my last straw. The employees here have always been unfriendly, unprofessional and outright rude. It's on the higher end of products and cost, well I will not abide this moronic rude behavior anymore. The employees regularly cut customers off without apologizing or excusing their intrusion into your space. Today, I went to the pastry counter. The woman working the counter waited about a minute before acknowledging me, even though I was standing, waiting patiently, right in front of her. No big deal, I am a patient person. Here's our exchange: Me:"HI, how are you? Her: "What!?" Me: "Excuse me?" Her: " What do you want?" Me: "Nothing now. Thank you for your professionalism and warm greeting". Her: "You're welcome". Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! I found the store manager and relayed my exchange. Instead of just apologizing and do his best to recover me as a customer, he said:"I've never received a complaint about her before." Like it's my fault that she hates her job? All the employees are so miserable there, it must trickle down from ownership and management. The manager offered to serve me personally and retrieve the items I wanted. No thank you. I'm not rewarding bad behavior by spending money in this place. I drove to their rival store in New City and purchased my groceries. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THE OLD WORLD MARKET. read more

I come here often with ambivalence. The market is very clean and orderly and the selection of foods great. The meats are close to private butcher and the fish is better than regular supermarket. My issue is with the clear lack of caring about the customer. With their noticeably higher prices than other market for same items, they have the nerve to charge you for a bag. Petty? Maybe, but but it's principal. Many of their staff have a poor attitude/unfriendly and if you forget your "bonus" card, you are clear out of luck. They don't look it up by telephone number nor can you return with your card and receipt to add the points to your card. Bizarre place. We are planning to live in the Nyack area seasonally. Since there are not really any local seafood shops, I stopped in Old World to check it out. Prices are very high, as expected for the area, but they do have a Loyalty Card which gives access to sales. I asked if I could get a card. They said no. You can't have a card until you spend $100. Well, that will not be happening. I will spend exactly $0.00 in this place. And it wasn't just that bizarre qualification: the manager was...what can I say publicly?...a dismissive, disinterested zero. We entertain quite a bit and do not mind paying for convenience, but I'd rather drive 20 miles than step foot back in this place. read more

This place is disgusting. The only reason they carry premium and organic foods is because the profit margins are higher. I bought a piece of Beemster cheese here and when I got it home I found that they had used the price sticker to cover a huge spot of mold. When I returned it the manager offered no apology and tried to convince me to grab another piece instead of getting a refund. I politely said no and asked for my cash back, he obliged begrudgingly. I watched him walk back and hand the cheese over to the cheesemonger. I couldn't tell what was said but I noticed that the cheese wasn't thrown away. Recently I bought some organic chicken and when I opened it up it was especially pungent. I then looked at the sell by date sticker and noticed that a fresh sticker had been placed over an older sticker that had been hastily ripped off. I worked in the produce department of a grocery store for 3 years and we did some pretty eyebrow raising stuff but these two tricks are some of the shadiest things you can in the grocery biz. This place will put rotten garbage on the shelf rather than throw inventory away. I only gave them two chances because they are so close to my house. We love shopping in in Whole Foods and Balducci's markets and since we sometimes drive past here on the way home to Westchester we decided to stop to take a look inside. But as soon as I stepped foot through the front doors a strong smell of Ammonia or another strong odor seeped into my nostrils, Yek! To me it seems that they must mop the floors Ammonia, but whatever it is I CANNOT shop in a store that smells, no matter what high ratings other YELP! customers give this place. But, going forward we will just keep driving home and be thankful for Whole Foods Market and does not smell. read more

Old World Food Market - Specialty Food Near Me - Nyack, New York

A new business to add to the ecclectic foodie scene in Nyack. It closely resembles Market Basket, Corrado's or Whole Foods without being overly crowded or snooty. The interior decor is just what the title says "Old World" - think black rod iron and warm tan and brown colors throughout. There are many stations in this market, the usuals: deli, bakery, cheese, seafood but each staff member we encountered seemed to know their station well with lots of information and recommendations based on how natural or local a product may be. For the natural and organic crowd, this is a great place to shop for speciality items or a few things you need to pick up for the week (we stopped in quickly to pick-up salad dressing, sliced turkey and an avacado. See my Didier Dumas review for why...) Their are samples galore sprinkled throughout the store with generous portions. You can tell a lot of care and thought was put into every detail. The check-outs have up-to-the-moment computers, so everything went fast and smoothly. Will be back soon, and will definately keep at the top of my mind when planning a dinner party or to bring something to a party. (I wonder if they cater? Something I need to look into.) I ordered food for the Saturday after Thanksgiving to take to my son's home. When we opened up the food, it was not what I ordered. I called the store to tell them that at the time I placed the order, I stressed to the gentlemen what I was ordering as there seemed to be a lack of understanding on his part. I stopped in here the other night with my toddler son hoping for a quick dinner. The prepared food section was really impressive, and I really enjoyed our food. I had teh avocado salad and the grilled calimari and shrimp salad. Both were outstanding. I am really excited we are moving right by here next month and can see us picking up food from here often for quick dinners. This place has an epicurean kind of feel. Gourmet food. I sometimes feel like I am in Europe with this store. I got a Portuguese roll and they put some butter on it for free. The bread was fresh and tasty. They have a variety of bread and cheeses. In certain parts of the store they had tables to sample their breads, olive oils for dipping and cheeses. I liked how the cashiers dressed with chef aprons. At the end of it all they gave me a rewards card where I save up to a certain percentage as well as accumulate points towards a discount. read more

It is a bit on the pricey side, but they carry items that can't be found anywhere else around here--truffle butter, fresh lemongrass, membranillo, amazing cheeses, etc. Plus, their organic produce beats the pants off of Shop Rite. read more

I like coming here for lunch sometimes as their buffet is pretty large - probably the largest I've seen in a market. As such, there is a good variety to choose from such as meats, poultry, salads, pastas, fruits, and soups. The selections can be hit or miss at times. For example, the first time I tried their chicken meatballs, I was obsessed! Tried them again and they were not the same at all. Overall, the food is decent enough, even when it's a miss. One thing to note: I've never seen any utensils or salt and pepper. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I think it's super inconvenient if they actually don't offer them. read more

I have shopped at Old World off and on for about two years. They have a great selection of prepared foods and an excellent variety of cheese. The prices are slightly higher than your average supermarket, but the quality of food (for the most part) has always been excellent. Unfortunately, quality food does not equal quality service. The cashier who helped me tonight could not have been more unhelpful. She had a very blasé attitude that bordered on completely rude. She was clearly bothered that someone had entered her line and expected her to -gasp- ring them out. Her interactions with me were something out of the Walmart handbook. After a long day at work, I was so annoyed to be leaving the store in a bad mood. I had taken the time to come out of my way and spend money only to be treated like trash. Without a doubt that was my last trip there. I can live without the cheese selection, and will stick to the cheaper Trader Joe's or more distant Whole Foods.
