Stumbled across St Johns. Ironically I used to attend St Johns back in the 90s. Sounds like nothing has changed. At the time I was the ONLY black student in the entire school. k-8. I felt like more of an attraction than anything. Definitely felt like the teachers were all harder on me than my peers. Mind you, I have never been a troubled kid, nor a bad student. I was considering allowing my children to go there but thanks to Lady L, I think I will pay more for another school rather than subject them to the type of scrutiny and racism I endured while there.

I have been strongly considering sending my daughter back to public school. They claim to be more advanced in their studies than a public school, but my daughter is reading a book that she read in Public School three years ago. I am so disappointed in myself for choosing this school. The way that I feel treated by them is not against the law, but I do feel that it is a moral issue. Is this really the Catholic faith?

All of my teachers in Oak Park were exceptional, Miss Boehm for music, all three art teachers, Mrs. Andrews, Mr. Fleming, Miss Baskoff, Mrs. Hepker, Miss Ribordy, Miss Hill and others. It was an education that is obviously not common in our elementary schools today. No one talked about trans anything. The only person that was worthless was the school nurse. She had a great office, 2 tiny bedrooms, her own bathroom and a neat little uniform but she was useless the one time I got sick. Warned my boys NOT to marry a nurse, but they went ahead anyway. One is already divorced and the other is probably miserable!

I do believe that Elementary schools do shape who they will become. This is when their minds are still wanting to absorb information and this is when they are still free-spirited. When I was looking into moving, I was trying very had to find a school nearby. My moving was dedicated to a great school district. I came across an apartment complex and found out about this school in their district. Of course, I did my research on the school before I settled on my lease. After reading about studies and reviews on this school, I gave it a chance. Boy, I could NOT be any HAPPIER. She is enrolled in Kindergarten and the transition mid-year for her was GREAT. When I had toured the school and expressed my concerned that she was transferring schools mid-year, they did take everything into account. When she attended her first week, she LOVED it. Her teacher is VERY attentive to all of her students as well as the parents (this is usually not likely). I was able to contact her teacher with any concern(s) I had via email or phone and she was VERY prompt in her response(s). Each child in the classroom was so well-rounded, as in they were go kind to each other. You were able to tell that they were well disciplined at school in order to come home and implement the same mind-set taught to them. The office staff there in the administration part was not too friendly. When I came in, I get it that I was there at 7am when they opened, but that doesn't excuse their behavior towards me. I had the reaction of "oh goodness" from the staff. I gave them the benefit of the doubt since it was really early. When I came in for several other visits, they did treat me with more respect, acknowledging that they had remembered me (*phew). Now that I have gained my "want" in the office, I realized that the school truly does care. This post could be because I'm still a Noobie to the whole parenting idea, and having my child involved in schools, but this school is truly GREAT. I'm a young mom, and I see the potential in this school to mold my daughter to be a great person.

Art class from kaleidoscope, Spanish (ms Adrianna) soccer, Choir (ms Leslie) , piano classes (+ annual recital) (ms MJ) and most recently classes on site from W.Kim taekwondo. Summers are full of fun events like bike and splash days and other special events for parents/families during the school year. We are lucky to have both ms razvi/ms Janet and ms Tucky/ms Aparna- we've felt supported here and both children are learning so much. Plus the kids loved their teachers. There seems to be a lot of support for the teachers w/ continued Montessori training and much more. There is almost no turnover, and many of these amazing teachers have been at Opus since it opened 4 years ago. We have been very happy here and are grateful to have found opus.
