Fun in the sun and a pile of fruit to boot!…read more So after another Reits run, the three of us (me, S, and my niece) decided that we'd had enough digging around looking for books and toys, but we really didn't want to go home yet. That was when S had a great idea- go pick strawberries! U-Pick fruit places are everywhere around here, and we've both got good memories of heading to Fritz's U-Pick out near Gobles when we were younger. So a quick search on Yelp turned up this place, and it was actually convenient to get to- it was on the way back from Reits. Pulling in, we were greeted with a field full of cars, and a massive strawberry field- with lots of other people here! The way it works is rather simple- you get a big container and a few little ones, and you go up and down the rows of strawberry plants looking for ripe red berries to pick while avoiding the rotten ones, the green ones, and the damaged ones. When you've picked enough (whether because your carrier is full or your back says "no more" doesn't matter), you carry the strawberries up to the hut where they're weighed and you pay for them. Then you take them to your vehicle and go on your way. It's a lot of fun, and my niece had a blast helping us dig for yummy fruit, and spending some time outside instead of watching television all day is always good. There are a few caveats- this is physical activity, so be prepared to get down and dirty. The majority of the berries are deep under the leaves, so you might have to kneel or sit in the moist dirt. Wear stuff you don't mind getting dirty. There are bees about- just give them space if you have to. It also gets pretty hot, so take precautions on sunny days! The berries here won't be as big, as uniform in flavor or in color as the ones you find at the Wal-Mart/Meijer's/local grocery. If you're looking for strawberries just to eat, be aware that you might get some sour ones- but if you're going to do things like make jelly or jam, make some strawberry pie or shortcake, or whatever, this place will suit your needs perfectly! If you don't feel like picking them yourself, you can buy them for about three bucks and change a pound (u-pick are about two bucks a pound). This is a great place to spend a few hours! There's also a playground for small children on the backside of the market, which makes it easy to bring the family! This location is about 1/3 the size of the Bank St. market (from what I've been told) which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but may not be what some new folks might expect. The only downside to a smaller market is that there are fewer price points to select from for your produce. Other than that it's a great place!

It's a great deal compared to what we pay at our farmers market and I found their batch to be more thoughtful- no green ones, minimal leaves, and not many I had to toss. That's a win in my book. Their blueberries were also juicy, firm, and tart. The best we've had and I believe was their Elliott variety. We also purchased their blackberries, the best purple plums we've ever had, some small yellow plums, and two jars of Queens jam for gifting (which we were told is loved by them!). Back to those plums though...do not skip! All in all the price was fair and wound up to about $31. We would definitely stop again on the way up from Chicago if we're early enough but definitely on the way back from metro Detroit. The staff was also helpful in choosing the best fruits. Now we don't just buy meat and eggs in our house, we call Norm. Norm is the kindest and most giving man and his entire family reflects his tenderhearted nature. His son, Blake, helps run his farm stand at the Kalamazoo Market while Norm and his wife, Karen, run the market in Lawton. They raise their own chickens, pigs, and cows and the quality of their meat and eggs cannot be duplicated. We have not purchased meat or eggs from the supermarket in years. Their shop is well worth the drive from Kalamazoo (about 42 minutes from downtown) or Blake is usually willing to meet you around town to fill orders for convenience. I have found over the years that we actually pay less buying our locally raised meat from Norm and we are happier. We get better quality eggs and better tasting chicken and pork. We know exactly where our beef is coming from and how it is raised.

Wagoner's is your average tiny-town grocery store. It's got two checkout lanes, a small hot…read morecounter, and a somewhat decent selection of things- but on the other hand, it really suffers from being so close to a Wal-Mart and a bigger grocery store not five miles away. It's pretty much the penultimate small-town grocery store experience- if you just need a few things, it's an okay place to go shopping, but if you want to lay in a decent, sizable supply of food, you'd be better off going to the Family Fare or Wal-Mart in Paw Paw. It's somewhat clean, but the aisles are really kind of narrow- you can still get around people going the opposite direction, but there are places where if you're going too fast, you could just knock right into someone making the turn into or out of an aisle. The prices are all right, but at the same time, they just don't really have a lot of selection. If you just need something- like, say, a box of cereal, and a half-gallon of milk, this is a good place to get that. If you need some exact flavor of cake mix and a specific piece of produce, you might have better luck going to Paw Paw for it. There's also the fact that some, if not most, things are more expensive here than at the Family Fare or Wal-Mart, but you have to decide, what's more important, if you live in Lawton or the surrounding area- spending a little more just so you don't have to make the drive out to Paw Paw, or do you make the drive and save a couple of bucks? It's the kind of place you can pull your truck and boat into and grab enough stuff in the way of beer and snacks for an enjoyable day fishing, or if you just need some cat food on the way home from work and you really don't feel like spending the time up on your feet to wander around Family Fare, or if you don't feel like braving the crowds out at Wal-Mart. On the plus side, they DO stock some certain things- and varieties of things- not available at your bigger chain stores. They also sell shirts and other clothes emblazoned with the local high school mascot on it, so if you want to show off your Blue Devil pride, that's the place to get your gear! I have to knock the place for a few things, though- it's not open that late (it closes at ten, compared to the Family Fare (midnight) or the Wal-Mart (24 hours), and sometimes they seem to have trouble keeping the aisles clear (boxes, displays, and blind corners add up to taking it safe but slow with your cart). The bottle return also leaves a lot to be desired- there's just two machines, right in the front, between the candy machines and the local bulletin board. It's still better than some stores I've been to, but like I said, if you need more than just a few things, run to Paw Paw.

The produce area that housed what looked like newer coolers, seem out of place. Lots of displays and clutter throughout the aisles. Really cool wine/beer area. The meat dept was eh? Most of the ground beef or burger was brown/gray, not very fresh looking. They did have a deli: hot food and cold salads. I personally didn't like the way it looked; very messy/sloppy. The employees I encountered while there also seemed sloppy and lackadaisical. Check out was weird being at the counter but the cashier made it worth it. She's a gem! No name tags but my receipt said her name was Amy.
