While visiting, we stopped for a bite as we got to Galway a bit late, and it was across from our hotel. First off, I'd eaten fish chowder a few times all over Ireland, this was my favorite. Lite and herby, it was a perfect warm supper on a chilly night. Service was succinct and pleasant- but to be fair, I have only wonderful things to say about Galway. Such a great staff work here and the vibes are so great! I love that it was just a 5 minute drive to downtown Galway and they offer free parking for patrons! Makes things easy for us as we honeymoon throughout Ireland the UK with a car! This restaurant and bar also has a Inn as well attached , which is where we stayed for two nights. The staff are all welcoming and very knowledgeable about the area. Located facing the river and about 20mins walking distance from the main shopping areas, you have to come and stay here. The rooms in the inn are beautiful and super comfy, plus we have a sitting room! You also get complimentary breakfast at the restaurant next door depending on which room you booked. There are so many plugs and switches in the room you can charge everything you have and still have more unplugged. The restaurant is fantastic with beautiful decor and very spacious. The food was delicious and my other half had gone to their bar a few times and likes their selection of alcohol. If you ever come back or come for the first time to Galway, you must stay here! read more

Nice looking place and fairly large. There are a few different areas/rooms. When we checked out places to eat on our way to our Air BnB in Galway we cam across The Huntsman. We looked at the 1st - Main entrance. I went down a little further and saw the place packed with lots of children. Figuring we'd go to 'other' place we walk in to hostess stand and realized it's all one. That made it nice. There was more of a cocktail area with a bar and pastries and 2 other settings on either side. Great planning. There is nothing special about this restaurant but there was nothing bad except they didn't have tea that was on menu (unusual selection). Curry was OK, fish and chips were very good. I think if we were there for dinner and could have a cocktail we would have enjoyed more. We were exhausted driving from Dublin. read more

Right across the street from the g Hotel so if you are staying there it's like a 2 minute walk to the Huntsman. Got the Fish and Chips and the Chips blew my mind. The Chips or "fries" as we say in the States are like Steak Fries but half the length. Every single piece of the mountain of chips was fried to perfection. Hot, crispy but not too crunchy, deliciously starchy but not too dense. The fish itself was also really good...I think the Irish in general just know what's up with fish. After a long day of driving on the wrong side of the road (for Americans) we wanted dinner close enough to walk and The Huntsman fit the bill. We had a reservation and were seated immediately on arrival, but then our table of 4 was ignored for 15 minutes; not even a "I'll be right with you". We had to ask 3 times for water; one diner received his entree with no utensils. The beet salad was delicious but the fish cakes were essentially just mashed potatoes with a few flecks of white fish. Not once did our server anticipate anything we needed. We finally got the check after asking, again, 3 times. We just got into Galway and have been wanting Fish and Chips..the fish was a huge portion of a light flaky white fish (Hake) very lightly battered..so different from the fish and chips in he US. Daughter and i split the order thank goodness and also split a goat cheese salad.. both were very large portions, perfect for sharing. We paired the fish with a lovely Lager, Rockshore, which was ideal for lighter beer drinkers. I highly recommend this restaurant which has an adjacent hotel. Haven't been there for ages because the moody black haired waitress , who was as ignorant as a pet pig , would honestly put ya off going but she wasn't there today thankfully. I had the fish pie - I have never tasted such insipid seafood in County Galway though we have lived here for three years. For the price, the fish should be fresh. The lentil curry was likewise flavorless and in fact lacking in lentils. The white chocolate mousse was presented with a thick top layer of crumbs in a jam pot - though I couldn't detect any actual chocolate. Texture was more like custard than mousse. read more

I brought my boyfriend here for dinner on his birthday for the first time and we were both so surprised with how much we liked the place. From the outside I always thought it was a little pub - but it is such a modern spacious restaurant inside. The food here was great and reasonably priced. We both got chowder, which was delicious! Then for our main course; he got the steak and I got the fish - which neither of us could fault anything. The fish was one of the best I have ever had - it was cooked just right and had really great non-traditional sides which I enjoyed - both were full of flavour. There was also a great atmosphere between staff and customers. The staff here really seemed to enjoy working there which was nice to see on such a busy day. We will certainly be back. read more

Excellent choice! I was in Galway for work and some of my colleagues who are locals took me out for dinner to the Huntsman bar and restaurant. I'm a sucker for a good meat and potato dish so when I saw the braised beef over potatoes meal I knew what I wanted. It was excellent! After a week on the road and eating out every meal this was a nice change to have a substantial meal but not walk away feel as though I had eaten something that I shouldn't. By the end of the main course I was definitely stuffed on their generous portions but I had heard great things about their in-house bakery so a piece of Toblerone cheesecake was a must! So good. If I'm ever back in Galway the huntsman is definitely on my list of places I need to revisit read more

If you're looking for a good breakfast spot, this is it. My wife and I had breakfast here two mornings within a week and we weren't disappointed. The eggs, bacon, and really everything on the breakfast menu here is very good. The service follows suit. Good food. Good tea. Good service. Good overall. The only criticism we'd give is that on day one we got one size glass of orange juice and on day two we got a smaller one. Kind of odd, but whatever. read more

I had no idea how far away The Huntsman is from the center of town. It is walkable, but I would have preferred to be closer in. However, location isn't really my main issue with the Inn. Here we go: First....they are in the midst of some kind of construction. Every morning at 7am sharp a crane of some sort started operating right below or next to our room down below. 7AM!!! Then it seemed to finish around 9AM. It was seriously loud and once it started, you could not sleep. Most reputable hotels will inform you before you book a room when they are in the midst of construction so you can make an informed decision about whether to stay or not. The reception door is ALWAYS locked. I couldn't figure out why at first because it didn't seem to be a bad part of town. Turns out, the front desk is almost alway empty. By locking the reception door, they don't have to have someone sitting at the desk 24/7....or even 12/7. This meant if you called down for anything, no one ever answered. They put us in a room that was as far as you could get from the wifi, so it never worked in our room. So my advice...in terms of noise and wifi, don't let them book you in the four rooms around 113. Basically the front of the hotel. I have to say, the only reason we're up to three stars and not two is the room was huge. There was a well appointed bathroom with shower and separate tub, a bedroom and a sitting room. The furniture is dated, but that's something I can live with. There were however, no ice bucket or wine opener. I had to borrow one from the waitress who just happened to be working the front desk when I went down to find one. The restaurant and pub are very modern (which is not really my preference for Ireland). Service is mediocre and the food is also mediocre. We tried to avoid it after a couple of visits. They also are due the three stars instead of two because my husband left his brief case behind and they arranged to have it driven in a cab from Galway to Dublin (we paid, but they did at least help us with that). Needed a break from diving from Dingle to Connemara and decided to stop and check out Galway. We planned to do a little sight seeing in town but needed some refreshments first. The first place we came upon was the Huntsman. We sat at the bar and for how not busy it was it took much too long to be assisted. We wanted to order some drinks while we decided if we wanted to get food or not. I saw they had local craft beer flights so I asked about them. Both bartenders had no clue about the beers, what kinds they were or what breweries they were from. I took a chance and ordered it anyway and they were barely even able to tell me what they had poured. Due to this we decided to look for food elsewhere. read more

After spending a ball of money in there on 3 course meals for 10 people, we were then stopped being served as we were 'too loud'! It is the most uninviting pub I have even had to misfortune to give money too! In a bar I don't expect to be told that we're too loud and certainly do not expect to get stopped service. A quick spin down to Cork for a meeting left myself and my colleague hungry, spotting the Huntsman we dive straight in and eagerly order chicken wraps. As we wait for the food we look around... the place is very modern and cooly decorated... the more we looked the more we saw the detail of what must have been a very expensive design job. It was worth it, it really worked. The toilets were likewise clean and very funky (in the cool meaning rather than anything else). The place was packed, which at midday on a Tuesday afternoon usually means the food is something special, our hunger grew as did our expectations. Food arrived quickly and we eagerly dived in to a very full wrap served with salad, coleslaw and fries... just about perfect in presentation. ...it all went a little downhill from there, the food was OK... not great, not by any means awful either... it just didn't come up to the standard we had expected. None the less, we cleaned the plates and followed with a reasonable coffee. I'd definately give it another chance, its just too damn inviting not to! read more

The huntsman really surprised me. The name and outside view suggests a classic country Irish pub/bar but the reality is much different. Inside is a modern, well designed restaurant that served classic Irish foods with a twist. I got the lentil curry (only veggie option) and would really recommend it. Not too heavy but with enough flavour to justify the cost. Overall it's a place that will make you feel like the celtic tiger is back in full swing, whether or not that's a bad thing I will leave up to you. read more

Great find in Galway! My husband and parents stayed at the Huntsman this past weekend and really enjoyed our stay. The rooms were updated and clean and the beds were really comfortable! As far as the restaurant was concerned, all meals were fantastic (breakfast and dinner). The bartenders and the wait staff were all very attentive and had pleasant personalities. There was even a live band of playing on Friday and Saturday night. I would recommend the Huntsman to anyone visiting Galway and looking for top accommodation and good food! read more

My family spent the night at the Inn and it was the worst night of sleep at a hotel ever. It was so unbearably hot so we had to have the windows open all night. The windows overlook a very busy street so the noise was absolutely insane. It was so loud and it never died down so even when we fell asleep for a minute we would be startled awake by a loud truck. Air barely got in the windows either but smells of exhaust and cigarette smoke sometimes did. There wasn't even a fan in the room and the front desk was closed most of the time so we couldn't ask if they had one. There was also no ice machine so we couldn't even have cold water to drink. If they actually had Wifi, it certainly didn't work. The breakfast in the restaurant wasn't that impressive either. read more

I really want to rate this place higher because the food is excellent, the décor is good and the atmosphere is quite good too. But the service here is appalling. I'm not sure why because it seems like a nice place to work in, but I've consistently had poor service there each and every time I've visited. Waitresses who just bang the food out on the table without spending any time to explain what the dish is or even trying to upsell the desserts or sides. The last time I went there I had an excellent dish but the waitress didn't even know what the soup of the day was (I mean it's always vegetable of some kind). We ended up not getting a dessert because I was just so annoyed by the brusk service, but that wasn't a once off. Bottom line: great food, nice place but excuse the rude staff. read more

Excellent food and good variety of drinks available. I enjoy having a beer or a nice meal with friends or with my girlfriend. The menu changes regularly, offering a good chance to try new things to eat. Needless to mention again that the food is fantastic. The location is very good as well. Next to the lake, close to town (10-12 minutes walking distance) and right in front of the Eye Cinema. It's pretty awesome when you want to go to watch a movie and you have a nice meal or drink before you go. Unfortunately a star is lost because of the poor service. While some of the waitresses are really cool, others are clumsy, unwelcoming and can even look miserable. Same for the guys at the bar. If there is too many clients, you may be waiting a long time to get a second beer or your main course if you ordered a starter. But anyway, don't worry about the service too much and please go and try their food in a good atmosphere! read more
