A warning to those going to the "Gastro" doctor I have no friends or family to speak of, a situation in my life that I have come to accept. So everything on my plate is solely mine, and I don't like to bother people anyhow. I take care of what I have to. Recently I found out that there is something seriously uncomfortable in my esophagus region. So my doctor gave me a referral to Huron Gastro (They are probably all the same). It wasn't close but I KNEW they DO NOT want you driving home after anesthesia. I took a Lyft car there (to the tune of $35) and was going to do the same to get back. Walk into the office and they wanted my driver to fill out a form and stay in the crowded, hot waiting room for 2 HOURS. Obviously, Lyft and Uber don't work that way. If I hired someone, they would skip out with my money and leave me stranded. The sign of the times. I got to pay another $35 to get home and the procedure never got done. I have been stuck going to this practice for 10 years and I absolutely despise it. They have the monopoly on GI in the area and it makes it difficult for patients. I am in a major flare and they just don't care. No questions, no concern, just sorry to hear that you projectile vomited all over your car and that you have to have BMs 15 times a day but we are not calling your prescription until we feel like it. If I could give negative stars I would. Due to their negligence I suffered for 2 years with undiagnosed GERD and Bile Reflux!I originally was seen in 2020 for IBS. Very impersonal. In 2022 I saw Jill, one of nurse practitioners, for severe acid reflux I had been having for about 3 weeks. I told her I lost 10lbs since this started. Asked was it something to do with gallbladder removal less than year prior. I mentioned marijuana use as a past thing NOT current. Was I asked about it? Nope. I then have to wait months for a endoscopy. I was told it was fine and to "stop smoking marijuana. A year later I go for a second opinion with UofM. He right away prescribed Nexium 40mg. He does a BRAVO test. I have severe GERD but was never given this option at Huron Gastro. He then finds bile in my stomach. I have Bile Reflux too due to gallbladder removal. So, yea do not waste your time at this place. Awful bedside manner and awful negligent care!! Never assume someone who uses Marijuana past or present is a patient you can just toss aside. read more

Dr. Peter's has performed 3 colonoscopys on me. She is wonderful! She has wonderful bedside manner, anticipating patient anxieties and putting you at ease. I feel confident under her care. Dr. Walsh is also amazing. He has performed esophageal scopes on me. He is genuinely kind and very capable. As to Huron Gastro's corporate management and office capabilities, well they are downright awful. Scheduling is painful. Communication the worst I've ever experienced. It used to be better but has really downhill. Also whoever picked that grusome music we are forced to listen to when on hold should be fired. What's going on corporate management? Wow I don't even know where to begin. I brought my grandma in for a colonoscopy. She's 80 and has horrible bowel issues, so being on the meds to clean her out took a lot out of her considering she doesn't have much of a problem with that on her own. She got chemo for a few months and can't keep much in since then. We arrived an hour before her appointment as asked and sat for another 2 hours waiting to be called back. About halfway through she had a mistake and I asked when they would be bringing her back because at that point it had been an hour. She responded with "we're not sure they don't really tell us anything" and handed us a diaper. overall not a good waiting room experience at all. Seemed to be overbooked and non communicable. Grandma told me she won't be back again. She was taken care of surgically well but overall it was a lot on her and having her there an hour early to call her in almost 2 hours after her appointment time is just rude. read more

My first visit was in 2020 for a colonoscopy. It went great, staff was very professional and responsive. I had an upper GI in March of this year and it went well. I've been trying to schedule by 5 year follow up for my colonoscopy for a month and still have not been able to schedule it. I don't know what happened between now and March but the scheduling experience is lousy. They tell you they will call you back in 24-48 hours and it takes days. I missed the call, called back and left several messages, no response. I've went online and filled out the contact form for an appointment twice, no response. I will not be going back. read more

This place is like an assembly line. They'll do your procedure, but if you'd like any follow-up care or consultation, good luck. The doctors are unreachable through the portal. Medical questions are reviewed by an office manager, and apparently never reach the doctor. If you want to discuss your follow-up care you will be told to make an office appointment, which you will wait several months for. I think this is practice shows what happens when money is king. When I got home, I began pooping up blood. After going to to the bathroom about every 10 minuts just to poop up blood for at least an hour, I finally blacked out and fainted. I fell to the floor and hit my head on the floor and was knocked unconcious. Just before I fainted, I called out to my bf who was in another room. My bf ran to me and found me unconcous and snoring. He revived me (i don't remember calling his name a d I don't remember hitting the floor with a loud thud. He told me this happened), helped me up off the floor, helped me walk to the bathroom to sit down on the toilet. My under and pants were filled with blood. I had to change clothes and go lay back down. I felt very weak and sick. My bf tried to get me to drink some water. A little later, I got back up to take my nightti.e prescriptions. I was leaning against the counter and started to collapse again. Fortunately, my bf came into the room just in time to lrevent me from falling the hard tile kitchen floor. He put his hands behind my head to prevent my head from hitting the floor. My legs hyperextended at my knees because I went totally limp. I just layed on the hard, cold kitchen for several minutes before I could get back up. He had to help me get back on my feet. I went to the bathroom again to pee. I guess I finally lost enough blood out of my ass so I stopped bleeding. My bf had to help me back to the couch to lay back down. My bf called the emergency number on the sheets given to me by the nurse but nobody ever called back. We both read over the list of possible symptons and profuse bleed out my butt was not one of them! So they found blood in that stupid Cologuard test they sent me, eh? Nothing compared to almost bleeding to death after your cutting polyps out!! My head still hurts from the first time I fell and my legs still hurt from the second time. My hip hurts too. Lucky I didn't hit my head and split it open. This is all thanks to that procedure. I don't know what you did but I'd sure like some answers as to why I practically bled to death!! read more

The care is second to none. The accounting system is terrible. A customer ends up getting charged at time of procedure then gets billed while keeping the first amount in a separate account. So patient over pays. Overpayment may be returned many months later. read more

The checkin process went very smoothly. I was kindly greeted by a receptionist who asked me about any covid symptoms then took my temp. I wasn't seated long before the someone called me to finish the checkin process. My apt was for 10:30 but I was asked to be an hour early. It was over a half hour before I was called back by a nurse, but things progressed fairly quickly after that. The nurse took my vitals, asked about my health history, and inserted my IV. This can be really difficult but she took the time to find the right vein and got it right the first time (one poke). I was asked to put on a hospital gown and both the gown and the blanket were warm (nice touch). The anesthesiologist came to visit me and the dr (Dr. Fine). Before long I was wheeled back to my procedure room where those involved introduced themselves and got me situated. In no time at all, I was off to la la land. I didn't feel or hear a thing until I woke up after the procedure. The nurse in preop was knowledgeable and caring. She gave me something to drink, removed my IV and helped me get ready for home. The dr also came and went over my results. Both the dr and the nurse called my husband to update him. I was very happy with my experience with my colonoscopy here at Huron Gastro and I would highly recommend. read more

Repeat patient. Had a colonoscopy via Huron Gastro about 4 years ago with no issues. So since they have my file, I decide to go back there, plus my primary is affiliated with St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. I got through on the first try and the staff member was very nice. When asking for my insurance information, she mentioned that she did not see the Huron Gastro was a participating practice. I proceed to contact my insurance company and a representative had to call me back. An insurance rep finally calls me back about a week later, there is one doctor at the practice that is covered and only at the McAuley drive address. OK, no big deal. The problem starts when I try to call Huron Gastro back to make an appointment. I call at 8am, already 10 people on hold ahead of me. I call again in the afternoon, again 10 people on hold ahead of me. I leave my name, number, and why I'm calling. The recording states that I will receive a return phone call in 48 hours. Two days later still no phone call. I leave yet another message and again no return phone call within two days. At this point I message my doctors office and get a referral to another gastro practice that is in my network. I didn't want to go to another practice since Huron Gastro has my first colonoscopy files but I guess that I'll get those transferred. Based on the reviews I'm guessing that there are TONS of other people that are getting horrible service, or NO service, but they don't know where to post reviews. I don't have to put up with this disrespect of my time and I'm moving on. I'd give them ZERO stars if I could. read more

Beware of Huron Gastroenterology and of Dr. Mark J. Velarde. I am being billed almost $3000 for a colonoscopy which I was entitled to have done at no charge under the affordable care act. Surprisingly, the problem is not the insurance company refusing to pay but the Huron Gastroenterology's negligence in documenting the record, communicating with me as a patient and failure to work with the insurance company to have the bill paid. In 2015 I had a colonoscopy with a recommendation that I get another one after 3 years. It was on my list of things to do when I went to visit Dr. Mark J. Velarde of Huron Gastroenterology. I went to Dr. Velarde for digestive issues. During my visit Dr. Velarde asked about cancer history in my family. I told him that almost all of my immediate family had died of cancer including my mother, father, grandmother, great grandmother and 2 closest cousins. I essentially have no family left thanks to cancer. Dr. Velarde then said I should get a colonoscopy to "make sure" and while doing that we should do a Esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Dr. Velvarde did not say this colonoscopy was a cancer screening preventative procedure it seemed to be implied because of the context of the conversation. After the procedure I found out that Dr. Velarde ordered a diagnostic colonoscopy and Esophagogastroduodenoscopy which was performed on October 1, 2021. He never informed me that it was a diagnostic procedure. I never asked or requested a diagnostic procedure. I spoke with Kim in his office in billing. She told me that if Dr. Velarde documented our conversation then it would be possible to change the coding to preventative. Kim, in a later conversation, said after talking with Dr. Velarde that Dr. Velarde failed to document our conversation and that it would be improper to adjust and correct the record. Kim then said Dr. Velarde asked that she should get a copy of my previous colonoscopy and use the recommendation to resubmit the claim back to the insurance company. I gave Kim my previous doctor information and she told me she would get a copy of the previous record and call me back later that day. I also told Kim that I had spoken to my insurance company that they said they are willing to pay the bill as they have paid ones just like this before but they need the doctor to code the procedure correctly as preventative and that it might be helpful to have the doctors office call and talk to them as they could guide them as how to code it correctly. After a week of not hearing back from Kim I called and left a few messages eventually talking with her supervisor, Traci. Traci, told me that they will not be getting or submitting my previous colonoscopy records or would they be resubmitting my bill back to the insurance company. Traci said that I needed to get these records and contest this with my insurance company myself. I had previously called Traci about this matter and left messages so I asked her why she, Kim, the rest of her office do not return phone calls or do what they say they are going to do. Traci said they do not have the time to return phone calls or do what they say they will do as they get to many phone calls. I appealed to the insurance company and it was denied with a message asking the doctor's office call them so they could help them with coding so the bill could be paid I appealed again with the insurance company and again lost. I called Traci again and gave her this number. My issues are: 1. I was entitled under law to a free cancer screening colonoscopy. 2. Dr. Velarde implied to me that this was a cancer screening colonoscopy. 3. Dr. Velarde failed to properly document our conversation. 4. Dr. Velarde never informed me that he was ordering a diagnostic procedure. 5. Dr. Velarde never looked out for my interests or well being in this matter rather he only looked out for his own financial well being by ordering money making procedure tests with no consideration as to how it might impact me financially. 6. If Dr. Velarde had informed me that he was requesting a diagnostic procedure I would have without hesitation said no and asked my family doctor for the same procedure but as a cancer screening procedure. 7. Dr. Velarde's office to my knowledge has never once contacted the insurance company and tried to work with them on this matter despite two requests form the insurance company. 8. Dr. Velarde's office does not return phone calls, do what they say they intend to do or act in any way like a professional office. 9. I am being billed for almost $3000 by Dr. Velarde's office because of his offices gross neglect and incompetence for a procedure that I was entitled to have done free by law. read more

Huron Gastroenterology in Ypsilanti,MI has a lot of difficulty with knowing how to bill for their services. I had a colonoscopy, which was after 5 yrs. because they told me I needed it, due to polyps . I have good insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield and they have always covered much of this service. The anesthesiologists received their payment several months ago. These doctors need to code the procedure correctly, then the insurance company would have paid it. I talked to HG several times, with no resolution.They continued to bill me for $681.00. Finally, a year later I received two bills for $80.00. They also said that they made several attempts to collect for this service. NOT true. This was the first notice I've ever seen asking for the correct payment. Beware of this practice. I called this office to set an appointment for my procedure yesterday. The first person I spoke with was either completely inefficient in her job that she doesn't know what she's supposed to do or just plain doesn't care. The second person I spoke with did not asked same dumb questions the first person did gave treated me as if I'm not a customer nor a patient - in short dirt. She was very rude and contentious. After several attempts at making an appointment, I have decided to find another GI practice. I called and left 3 messages over a two week period in May for their scheduling department, after the operator insisted I would receive a same day call back. One week past my last call, with no return call, I called and waited to speak to someone. After over an hour on the phone trying to make an appointment, I gave up. The woman that i spoke to was blatantly rude and miserable, kept asking me the same questions over and over again. The end of our conversation went like so: Her: "What TYPE of an appointment do you want to make?" Me: "A new patient appointment, please." Her: "That's not a type of an appointment. What type of appointment are you making?" Me: "What are my options?" Her: "You don't know what type of an appointment you want to make?" Me: "I think I'll look elsewhere for an appointment.
