There was also a small mistake in my return, which may happen, but again it took forever to fix, due to delays, unanswered calls, and multiple people involved. Even if I submitted all my data very early, we ended up filing at the very last minute, where I had to chase them by calling multiple times a day. I was surprised by the confusion that seemed to dominate their process.

However, for our relatively uncomplicated taxes (I am W2, spouse is self-employed), we were charged $1200/year and received no tax guidance or discussion for that price. I finally found a new accountant, who charges less than half that amount, and meets with us quarterly throughout the year for an hourly rate. From the first phone call with our new accountant, we received more high quality information and transparency about cost than we did in five years of working with Baumann and Baumann. Furthermore, over the years, our interactions with them (via email) were filled with condescension and we were treated like children. When we decided not to work with them this year, they wiped our online portal of all our uploaded tax history without giving us a chance to review it. We stuck it out with them for longer than we intended due to the time it took to find a worthwhile alternative, but I'm so glad that we finally stopped working with them! If you are looking for affordable tax prep and high quality customer service, I recommend looking elsewhere.

Even though I had attempted to do them myself *and* had made some incorrect assumptions *and* handed off a mass of jumbled printouts and random scribblings, she was very professional, fast, and super nice. She even caught a little handwritten memo I'd made to myself about an ancient savings account that I had forgotten to tell her about during our initial meeting. Hurrah for being thorough! I thought her fees were on par with other tax prep services (simple filing, renter, not self-employed, MA and federal ~ $160) and was totally worth it considering the time I'd already spent plus the extra fees for e-filing Turbo Tax or H&R Block would have stuck me with ( ~ $80 + HUGE UNCERTAINTY). Plus she answered all my additional questions for free, which other chain services don't do. Anyway, Cyndie really put my mind at ease. Determined that the price for a return was reasonable (estimated around $450-$550) plus whatever extra complications. Sent the partner my previous turbo tax file (per request) and then asked two questions regarding my tax situation. This turned into a bit of an exchange over email, even had to send some additional papers. Mind you, this is all going on way before the actual tax return. One question answered, another not, but it did not matter because I figured once the actual tax prep began I can get all the information. Get a bill a few weeks later for $400 for "emails". Yeah, brutal. Turns out that answering two questions and going over some papers will run you four hundred bucks. Naturally, I resisted as that is crazy. So he offered a discount to $300, but that was still too much. I am being charged for emails what people pay for basic tax returns? Mind you at no point whatsoever do you get warned or that you are on the clock. Few months later collector comes knocking, I explain the situation and seemingly everything is quiet. Nope, they sue me in small claims. I figured why not, there is no way this is reasonable. Feels like a giant firm fleecing the small guy. Court will surely rule in my favor. Nope, clerk magistrate barely cares about my story and rules against me. Best part? The lawyers (yes, two ) had two cases that day. Apparently I am not the only one who finds the practices of this firm shady, underhanded and sneaky. However they still got their money from me one way or another, too bad it was via the courts and not actual services. Stay the hell away folks.
