The need for in-home caregivers has really gone up since the pandemic. With higher demand, it is definitely more challenging than usual to find good, reliable, decent, caring help for your loved ones. The hiring process has been scary and frustrating for me, since it is extremely expensive to pay for care. There isn't a reliable guidebook on how to find great care for your loved ones, I had to learn by doing and suffering through bad caregivers. What I learned is there are at least 2 business models/2 types of agencies: one that contracts out the work (like the uber model) and do not have any management or influence on the caregivers and second is that the caregivers are actually employees of the agency. Husky Senior Care hires their caregivers as employees and each caregiver has some college or certification for caregiving. This type of agency is so much better and surprisingly, the costs are the same as the contracting agency. I hired a contracting agency when my Mom was first released from the hospital and hiring caregivers was a brand new process for me and we went through at 8 caregivers. One caregiver just didn't show up for her shift. And guess what? In the contractor business model, that is the caregiver's rights - they can walk at any time without notice and the Agency will leave you hanging without any help. The Agency has no employees so they cannot deploy any caregiver as needed, the Agency can only send out contract bids and hope someone is interested. Definitely give Husky Senior Care a chance to provide caregiving assistance for your loved ones. Markie (the Executive Director at Husky Care) was enthusiastic, determined, and creative in helping me find care that fit my Mom's situation (my Mom fell and suffered a muscle contusion. she does not need or want 24hour care but needs help with bathroom functions). Other agencies didn't come close to Markie's professionalism and can do attitude. I'm a health care professional in hospice, and a huge part of my job is helping patients and families obtain quality and affordable private caregivers to supplement the care that the family is providing for their loved one. Husky, a smaller and caring agency, recently came into a very challenging situation with a frail very elderly couple, and despite their resistance to accepting outside care, Husky has completely won them over. Unlike some other care agencies that i've worked with,Husky not only comes in and provides a free consult with a care manager, they CONTINUE to have the managers monitor and communicate with the family and the healthcare team. Care managers Jennifer and Kris have been stellar in this way, and have found the most amazing caregiver, Michael, who visits them 2x weekly, each for 4 hours. They do it all, from driving the couple to errands and MD appts, to an outing at the lake, to meal prep, to light housekeeping, to personal care for our hospice patient. They are not the cheapest agency out there, but there is a real reason for this: quality caregivers, and a hands-on collaborative approach, My agency has no affiliation or relationship with Husky or any other agency, but i did feel it would be helpful for those who are seeking good safe care to give it a go. :) read more

They are amazing at implementing this mission. Our father (a 94 year old retired UW professor) suffered from progressive dementia, and wanted to live out his life in 'his old home'. Our family of three sibling's along with two private caregivers had managed to keep Dad safe and fulfilled for several years. By the third year, the load was growing beyond our ability and energies. We wanted to maintain the quality of care for our father and avoid burn out for us. Husky Senior Care engaged with us quickly and smoothly. Their Care Manager model is brilliant. It is wonderful to have a personal relationship with a supportive person who coordinates all of the services. Sarah was caring, knowledgeable, and highly collaborative. She explored our family and care team values so they could design a care plan to meet our needs. She understood that we needed to wrap their services around our existing family care team. We coordinated scheduling and communication, working out systems so that our team and their staff could share task lists, meds management, and activities. Sarah also worked with us to file our Long Term Care Insurance claim and followed through with billing LTC directly. We started out with one agency caregiver who allowed us to fill out 7 days of daytime coverage. Adela was warm, caring, cooperative and hard working. She quickly developed trust with Dad, helping him to stay independent and supported. When she completed the usual chores (bathing, toileting, exercises, cooking, and cleaning) she took the initiative to keep up the garden and bring fresh flowers into the house. Her energy and joy made the house a brighter and better place for Dad and the family. Dad was hospitalized during his last month, and on discharge required 24/7 care at home. Husky transitioned quickly, bringing on more staff. They were careful to bring in as few people as possible, to avoid disrupting Dad with too many new faces. Care Management also transitioned to nursing, for meds delegation and coordination with Hospice. Katrina was there with us as we made the Hospice and 24/7 arrangements, coordinating, educating, and supporting. She trained both the agency staff and our private caregivers on meds delegation, so that Hospice meds could be used as needed. During Dad's final weeks Katrina coordinated directly with the hospice nurse, and helped us to understand the rapidly changing situation so we could make good choices. She could not have been more supportive and compassionate. Husky Senior Care is an outstanding agency. They provide superb support for both the family and senior who wants to age at home. They are reliable and trustworthy. Our family had complete confidence in their care for Dad and the support for us. When we started working with Husky Senior Care there was an immediate reduction of stress on all of us, including Dad. All of their staff; the caregivers, the Case Managers, and schedulers were professional, skilled, experienced, friendly, compassionate, supportive and reliable. They are flexible, providing exactly what you need, when you need it. They are able to coordinate with existing care teams, and with Hospice for end of life. Over the 6 months we worked with Husky Senior Care, our family and private care givers were all impressed by the level of support, compassion and professionalism from everyone who works on their team. One always wonders if you are doing enough for your parent, should you do more, or how else can we make our parent more comfortable at this stage of life. As upset as I am right now, you would think I'd give negative stars, but being an honest person, I want to acknowledge that we have had several very sweet caregivers. Unfortunately that is the crux of the problem. My parents, 90 & 93, have been clients of Husky off and on for a few years. We loved using a local company and appreciated that Matt came out himself initially to meet and talk about Husky. The problem has been that Husky has a hard time keeping a consistent workforce and there have been multiple changes in the caregiver assigned to take care of our parents. This is especially difficult for folks who are picky about what they would like to have done and as you may know, the older we get, the less we like change. My parents have felt that they are constantly retraining people and just when they have someone they like and feel comfortable with, they change. My parents have complained numerous times (including directly to Matt) and have received constant reassurance that the situation would improve. We have changed days and times we request service to accommodate what we have been told is a solid employee who will stick with us only to be in the same situation time and time again. What has me extremely upset right now is that Husky provided us with a great caregiver who decided to leave their employ and go to another position. When asked if we could follow her there, she did not solicit us to do so, but offered the name of where she was going. I cancelled services with Husky due to the changes being too much for my parents to bear and looked into the new company, found our caregiver and hired her. Both she and my parents were so happy to be able to be together, but now Husky has frightened her so much, she says, "they have convinced me they have all the power and I am weak," due to a non-compete clause they have all employees sign (do you really think they explain what they are having these folks sign?). I was honest with Husky. I told them what we were doing and why. This "caring, compassionate service" they provide that scares their employees and alienates their customers. Leaving elderly folks to suffer because an employee chose to go somewhere where they can make more money. Trying to calm a caregiver and convince them that their ex-employer is not going to go after them in court because they know they would lose and it's not worth the time just doesn't cut it. To this sweet woman who just wants to work for people she enjoys and who enjoy her, it is more than she can handle. She is afraid they can ruin her. Seriously, Husky? You wonder why you have such turnover? So now I will look for a new caregiver for my parents. Rest assured it will NOT be through Husky Senior Care. read more

My elderly mother and step father stayed with us in Seattle for five weeks during the holidays. They had a daily caregiver in their Arizona home, and I thought I could manage on my own. I realized within a day the task of helping them wash, dress and stay clean could be daunting and time consuming--particularly when a grumpy 84 year old man is in the picture. I got a referral list from Greenwood Senior Center, and I chose Husky because they were close and offered less than four hour minimums. Did ever luck out. Within one day Matt showed up (dressed in a suit...in Seattle) to fill out paperwork. Later that day our first caregiver showed up. We had four total who worked with us for a month. Although they have all different personalities, they were all wonderful and cheerful and made my folk's stay here much more tolerable. Without them I would have really lost it. Aside from keeping them clean (a much tougher task with him) they also helped out with snacks, laundry and some bathroom maintenance/cleanliness. On a few occasions I was able to leave the house because I knew someone would be here, and once we had them stay here for five hours "to babysit" while we left for a holiday function. They all loved our overly exuberant dog, and Stephanie even walked her a couple times! The folks are now back in Arizona and have moved into assisted living. I sustained a bone bruise (partial fracture) to my ankle and my husband works long days and I have no family in the area who can help me out with daily activities. After months of a long rehabilitation process, I was feeling overwhelmed, and I reluctantly reached out for help. Husky Senior Care was very helpful and understanding. My Aunt had reached a point where she no longer could manage on her own and HSC provided a good quality of life for her. We had researched other options and companies but found HSC to be the best fit. The quality of care, professionalism of the caregivers and the overall assistance for both of us was stellar. They were always available by phone or email and always let us know before any changes were made to my Aunt's routine. They arrived on time each day and stayed until my Aunt was settled in the evening, even if that met staying a little later. I can't recommend them enough. read more

This company thinks nothing about but money. 24 hour care to them means her her in bed and asleep as much as possible. The caregivers are substandard -- although they speak some English they have such accents it is difficult for an older person to understand. They have left my mother laying in bed entire days. It is chore to bathe her. They put the same clothes on her day after day. Her her medication ran out the caregiver said she did not think she needed it any more. Husky Senior Care provided outstanding service when our family faced an unexpected emergency. When my stepmother returned from a stay in short term rehab., my dad fully expected things to revert to "normal". Unfortunately, that wasn't the case and on the first day home we both struggled mightily to make a wheelchair to bed transfer. It soon became apparent that my dad could not make transfers on his own. I called Matt Long on a Friday afternoon as he was leaving for a short holiday. In spite of the awkward timing, Matt was able to meet with my dad on Monday and a HSC employee was on the job first thing Tuesday morning to assist with twice a day transfers. Although we only needed these services for a month, I came away impressed with the company's professionalism and attention to detail. One thing that was especially helpful was that I could access HBC's website each day and see exactly when the caregiver arrived and departed. Husky Care aides helped my 90-year-old mother for 2 or 3 years, enabling her to stay active and connected through trips to the YMCA, shopping and other outings. At home, Husky caregivers prepared nourishing meals, helping to ensure that my mother ate properly. The Husky Care team provided excellent, conscientious support at every level. Matt met with us first to discuss care options for my mother. A care coordinator then visited to go over the specifics of what we needed and draw up a plan of care. "No Dr. Levinson, it's too dangerous," Nana said. Dad's care giver, Nana, is not what you think a "Nana" should be. Try 6'3, full of muscle but also full of compassion. He looked at me when we met in Dad's house and we both laughed. I like him, YET, days before, Dad wanted Nana to bring the wheelchair close to the stairs. The people at Husky Knew who to call, and I was able to talk Dad down from the heights of disaster, and Nana and Dad made up over pizza. Matthew Long and the people at Husky always seem to know how to make the right calls. Mat and I have been talking on and off about Dad's health and care since 2012. He has been patient and very helpful through extremely difficult times. When the Husky Senior Care team came to the house, they were both professional and also very compassionate about Dad's needs. If there were problems, they were solved quickly and with as little disruption of Dad's routine as possible. At age 85 and in a wheelchair for over a decade, Dad needed that routine to feel comfortable and stable within his own home. For over 3 years Husky Senior Care has given Dad and the family the stability, safety, and in-home care that has been remarkable. We have had 'Husky Senior Care' provide caregivers for my husband for the last 2+ years. We've had primarily two caregivers over this period of time, with the exception of a brief interim turnover issue-- (which did require re-training individuals ). Thankfully, this was resolved relatively easily with the help of the Care Manager, and owner Matt. The main two primary caregivers have been exceptional, and provide transportation to various appointments, meal preparation, and light housekeeping on a regular basis, (including dog walks). I can't say enough good things about Husky senior care. I'm especially grateful to Kris, our care manager. Kris and her great caregivers helped my family get through the last few very difficult years. My husband was diagnosed with brain cancer four years ago and became paralyzed after the surgery and needed 24/7 care. I needed professional care during the day so I could go to work. I tried a couple other home care companies but unfortunately that didn't work out for various reasons. A hospital social worker recommended Husky. Jennifer came over for the first visit. I was very impressed by how caring and professional she was. I signed on. Kris took over as my care manager afterwards. And we settled on a few great caregivers that bonded with my husband. Kris came over to visit regularly. Every time we had a sub for a day, Kris always made the effort to be here to make sure things run smoothly. Without Kris and her excellent caregivers, my family couldn't have pulled through the last few years. My husband put up a brave fight and far exceeded every doctor's expectation. Unfortunately, his condition worsened toward the end of this summer and was admitted to the hospital for inpatient hospice care. I was really touched that Kris went to the hospital to visit my husband. She was there for him and brought him comfort and made him feel loved the last day he was awake. He slipped into a coma and passed away shortly after Kris's visit. I was choking back tears typing this letter. Kris, I will be forever grateful for what you did. I cannot say enough good things about Husky Senior Care. My mother was living in an independent apartment in a retirement community. She suddenly took ill and need additional care. Matt came the next day and set up care. My mother then had to move to the health care facility. Husky health care was so flexible with my mothers needs. When she moved back to her apartment they were there again providing care. Her care giver Michelle was unbelievable. Positive, fun, engaging, helpful, proactive with care... my mom loved her. My mom is moving to an assisted living apartment next week, but Husky Senior Care made the transition possible. After having a less than stellar experience with a different care company last year, I was hesitant to hire a new company to help care for my grandparents. Last month both of my grandparents were placed on hospice care, and as their primary caregiver I needed respite care 5 hours a day to be able to work still. From start to finish, Husky has been great. Our care manager and the 2 caregivers we had were extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and went above and beyond anything I expected. I appreciate the efforts to ensure safety, as well as the fact that everyone actually cared, and worked to build good relationships with both me and my grandfather. Sadly, both of my grandparents passed away; but I could not have gotten through this past month without Husky Senior Care.
