Looking for some late night action minus the booze? This place may just be the perfect entertainment venue. It is centrally located on the University of Washington campus and open late on the weekends. They have bowling, ping pong, pool (see my posted photo for the type of pool I am referring to), and video games, all for dirt cheap. I came here to play some ping pong and pool on Friday evening. They had everything I needed for rental and even have a mini convenience store and plenty of food vendors to satisfy my late night cravings after working out here.

This building has it all: a commuter lounge, the welcome center for campus tours, the book store, places to eat like Starbucks, Subway, and Pagliacci's, even a bank and a bike shop! Being that I commute to campus, the commuter lounge saved my life this past quarter. They've got a kitchenette with a refrigerator and two microwaves, lots of comfortable seating, showers for those who bike commute, private tutors, and a nursing room too. They have a hot water station and they give out free hot chocolate mix and tea bags if you bring a reusable cup. The top two levels of the HUB are offices. The main level is the welcome center, commuter lounge, lost and found, US Bank, and bike shop. There are also student associations on the main level. The lower level is where the food options are as well as a convenience store and the book store. There are about a half dozen food options from pizza and burgers to sandwiches and lots of coffee options. Wells Fargo and BECU kiosks are on this same floor. The basement houses a bowling alley. I love studying on the lower floor because there is way more seating than is ever used.

The entire HUB building is an amazing spot for the students of University of Washington and visitors alike. The HUB is a very easy walk from the light rail station (about 10 minutes). There are ample areas to sit and relax or socialize, including a huge living room area featuring fireplaces, and a food court, in addition to a Starbucks. There is even a game area complete with a bowling alley, ping pong tables, video games and pool tables. There is a small book store also located in the HUB and campus tours originate from this building as well.

Since then, I passed the building when revisiting some of my training sites on foot. Yesterday and today (Friday 23 February 2024 and Saturday 24 February 2024) I finally made my way inside the building and spectated the 2024 Ken Shannon Invitational (Indoor Tack and Field competition). Parking in the athletics area was available in the E1 lot (open to everyone) and the E18 (open to those with University of Washington permits). The rate for a full day of parking was $7.55 each day. I had no troubles finding a parking space either day. The ticket booth was located across from the main entrance of Dempsey Indoor along the side of the softball field area. Restrooms were along the same stretch as the ticket booth, roughly facing Husky Stadium. The entry fee for each day was $10 for general admission without discount, which I thought was a good deal as events ran for approximately 7 hours on Friday and approximately 4 hours on Saturday. The interior of the facility was well set-up to allow attendees close proximity when viewing contested events. Running events were held on the track at the same time field events were being contested in their designated section of the field. Fencing/barriers guided us spectators to viewing areas to watch the different performers. Bleacher seating was located along the starting area for track events, the triple jump/long jump area, and the pole vault section. Workers were professional and direct in communication. Athletes were tuned in to their surroundings as were the spectators and the coaches. Multiple clocks and screen displays were strategically located towards the ends of the track to communicate results. An announcer provided helpful context for results and music played when not a start of a race.

If you don't go to to UW, you may find yourself here for an event, but otherwise, you 'll run across it in your perusing of the campus. The exterior blends into the histories styles of surrounding humdinger of which I have yet to research. Regardless, it's not your modern Koolhaas you're going to see in other parts of the city, but instead a nod to buildings for older centuries than the current one. Designed by Basetti Architects in (2001, need to confirm...), the building is dedicated (like many of the IW buildings) to Microsoft royalty. In this case, the mother of Bill Gates, Mary Gates. The center of the building contains a workspace that reminds one of historic libraries with dramatic arches and light impacting the space at various times. The grey skies of Seattle keep this building modest, but it's worth looking at nonetheless. The classroom spaces are far less emotionally and aesthetically powerful with floors that remind one of a high school classroom, with clocks you can't help but look at and immediately want whatever is happening there to finish up. That's a little unfortunate, but functional nonetheless. The most inspiring aspect of the building is the student artwork, which is prominently displayed throughout. This is something you can't miss, because student art is always more express than what you'll see at a museum. Overall, the building has some character, plenty of function but could definitely be improved with a little lore attention. OK there's my first attempt at an architectural review. Please let me know how to improve it as I eventually will.

There is even a huge outdoor patio on the roof that is covered and usable even on the rainiest of days. For study areas, you can choose between the many cafe tables, the outdoor patio with chairs and tables, a lounge with a fireplace and comfortable chairs, modern metal chairs and ottomans spread throughout each of the floors, as well as tons of tables and computer stations on the library. When it is sunny and warm, people study on the steps and front lawn of this building too. If you want to avoid the boisterous underclassmen at Ode, and don't feel like walking up all the stairs to the Suzzalo quiet reading room, I highly recommend the Paccar library as a study area. The library is very spacious which allows many students to study here at once with ample space for spreading out their books and notes. One of the best features of Paccar is the food that is available for sale right by the entrance. Students are able to purchase delicious sandwiches, salads, or pasta here. There is also a Starbucks which I enjoyed stopping by before my accounting class!
