Review of the Kiddo Play Area: So this pandemic thing is really taking a toll on things, and well, we have been to basically every open air playground around the Greenwood/Broadview/Carkeek area... except we realized that we haven't been to the one behind the PNA. So on a cold, non-rainy day, we took the kiddo there to see if it was any good. Keep in mind that it's reserved for the preschool during the week/business hours, but on the weekend, it was a nice change of scenery. They had a few play structures, on a mulch and rubberized area. Sure, parental guidance is required, and you really should have a "toddler" kiddo here... but for the kiddo, she enjoyed the slides, the "kitchen" and the tires. She being the expert of walking on narrow surfaces, I think enjoyed the areas like a balance beam master in training. If you have been everywhere, and you want a playground that is a nice scenery change, here's one more to add to the list. Also, nearby is Red Mill Burger, so there's that you could be eating, while your kiddo is playing to their heart's delight. read more

used to love this place. John was so welcome and warm. The new employee at the front desk is AWFUL (blond lady). I overheard her being rude to a class of special needs students. The 2 interactions I had with her were very unpleasant. I tried to be friendly and assumed she was having a bad day, but both interactions were met with hostility and anger. read more

So many different classes, groups, and events that take place here. Classes range from yoga to computers to travel and more. Groups have included a book club, eco-sustainability club, and more. Events include the Farmers Market, Beer & Wine tasting, Auctions, and more. You can also rent rooms for Christmas parties, homeowner meetings, special events, and more. They also produce "The Review" a newspaper about Phinney Ridge. They have a parking lot and are located next to Starbucks & Red Mill which is super ideal. read more

We go here once a week for a class that our children really enjoy. The staff are really nice and helpful, and the building is a beautiful classic structure. There are two levels and buildings on the property. One is on the upper level, and the other is on the lower. In between is a great play structure, with a long slide. Do not go down in rain pants unless you really want to push the envelope. :-) read more

I am specifically reviewing the tool lending library. This place is FANTASTIC. Seriously the best thing that happened all week-end was finding this resource . They didn't make us pay or leave a deposit or even sign them out--that's good old fashioned Mayberry know-thy-neighbor trust.] An old building dripping with character and wood so shiny you're compelled to rub it? A tool lending library with tutorials? Home tours of innovative, eco-friendly remodels? Phinney Farmers Market? Beer and wine tastings? Sing alongs for the kiddie set? Promotion of local artists? Giant neighborhood garage sale? Classes like "Rain Garden Design, "Mahjong," "Buttercream Flowers" and my #1: "The Joy of Old: A Guide to Successful Elderhood?" Yep, they've got it all. I LOVE the Friday market at the PNA. I come here every Friday during the summer and get 2 giant bouquets of flowers for only $20!!! $20!!!!!! That is ridiculous. And much easier than going down to Pikes Place. Some of the other highlights at the Friday market are Veraci pizza which is amazing, some awesome ice cream, and this place that sells really awesome frozen soup. I always get the crab bisque - very delish. The PNA has some other fun events too - I love the beer tasting. I haven't used any of their other services yet, but maybe one day! read more

There is a spirit to this old building, and the people who frequent it, that is so welcoming. I love how any night you show up you will find some new and unique offering, from home improvement to tribal bellydance, or from taxi cab driver training to conversational language courses. The art installations in the upstairs hall are always inspiring and thought-provoking, and the activities and events sponsored by/through the community center throughout the year are unique and fun. I especially love the Annual Gumshoe Walk each year, which takes you on a walking tour of the surrounding neighborhoods, eagerly chasing down clues, and vying for nothing more than coupons for 30 free ice cream cones. Farmers Markets, community dances, Day of the Dead arts and crafts...there's always something going on here for everyone! read more

I love this space or rather, their spaces. According to their website, the Phinney Neighborhood Association was founded in 1980, with a $200K federal block grant to develop programs to serve residents living between 65th and 75th Streets, from Aurora Avenue to 3rd Avenue NW. There are three different locations and four buildings under the PNA umbrella. I've attended events at all locations so I feel confident in reviewing all of them. I'll start with their main location, the Phinney Centre. There are two buildings: the Brick Building and the Blue Building. Both buildings have a variety of rental selections and each has an adjacent parking lot with ample free parking. Both buildings are century-old and have been updated to allow accessibility yet still retaining its former schoolhouse aesthetic. There are ramps, an automatic door if needed, plus an elevator to access the higher floors. Be aware though that the uppermost floor (Blue) does require a flight of stairs so specify your accessibility needs when renting space. The Greenwood Senior Center (GSC) is conveniently located on N 85th Street between Greenwood Ave N and Aurora Ave N. The GSC also comes with an adjacent parking lot with free parking and easy accessibility for those with mobility issues. The final building is the Sunset Hill Community Association, a large two-story house built in the 20s and renovated in 1999. There are two large halls with fireplaces, kitchens, and restrooms on each floor. The Upper Hall has a piano and stage with curtains and professional lighting. Both halls and the lower restrooms are wheelchair accessible, plus an elevator can be made available on request. I'd say that this building is best suited for large gatherings of 150 people or so. Because the SHCA is tucked away in a residential area, there is a strict cut-off time for music (9 p.m. weeknights/10 p.m. weekends). There are tables and chairs available for all rooms, plus some spaces have professional sound systems, televisions, and DVD players. Some of their buildings will allow alcohol consumption, check first before you bring anything though. You will need to obtain the appropriate Banquet Permit from a Washington State Liquor Store and all alcohol must remain inside the building. read more

For being a neighborhood association, they are ironically bad neighbors. We have often had to fight them about the noise ordinance with guests, as well as the fact that they say they don't lets guests open certain windows to reduce noise to the neighbors, but they never tell the renters that. They also forgot to tell the child care group that they told neighbors about a whole method of pickup to reduce traffic in the area, showing that it was clearly not actually happening. Their classes and resources and good, and it is understandable why people otherwise like the PNA, but as someone who has had to talk with them and see all the different things they lie about, I find it hard to trust them to tell the truth about anything. read more

I first heard of the Phinney Neighborhood Association through the construction company that I work for. After finishing up installing an elevator and performing some seismic upgrades to the old blue building, my coworkers invited me to go to the annual beer tasting with them. I thought the old building was charming, had great staff, and I had an all around great time! Although I live in West Seattle, I like to encourage any program that brings community together. PNA offers some great classes and programs and really cares about making their neighborhood a better place! read more

This place is really cool. The building is large and beautiful. We rented a space for a new parent event (8 sets of twins), and it was perfect. The restrooms are close and large and accessible. They have an elevator to get to the higher floors. The people that work there are really nice. They have two parking lots- an upper and lower. This would be a cool space to rent for a small party for kids. read more

What a gem of a neighborhood resource! I took a set of evening classes there and loved how alive and diverse the activities were there. Everything from art displays, real estate classes to computer and martial arts. Plus, the wood floors, building style and history just add more to an already great place. So much happens here, that I get confuused! So do the staff for that matter. Each tiem I go for an event or activity I feel like I get a runaround. It seems like there can be a central office or desk in the front where a person has a general title and can direct th epublic. That's not the case. However, once you have asked a few people where you need to be and ge there the activity is interesting. I am amazed at the variety of classes and one night meetings which occur here. read more

This charming old school is now a lovely, historic community event space. I've come here for a few events in recent months and have had an absolute blast. The sense of community here is super strong. Lots of folks seem to know each other at the events and everyone is really friendly. I don't live near the area but still love the idea of this association and how jointed and unified everyone seems to be. Most recently I was here for a wine tasting event and not only were the organizers and sponsors friendly, all of the guests were as well. I chatted with a ton of friendly folks and really had a lovely time! Can't wait to see what events they're having in the near future. read more

We rented out a room for my mom's 50th bday. One complaint? A lot of the outlets didn't work. That aside, the space was PERFECT. Hardwood floors, just big enough, pretty lighting, nice facilities staff. I loved it. I will definitely consider renting out a room here! read more

The Phinney Center is the heart of the Phinney and Greenwood neighborhoods! They have awesome class offerings and activities, connect neighbors, organize several outreach project helping those in need in the community. Every community should have such a center. read more

We had our wedding here, and it was really special. The staff were awesomely helpful, and the event space is beautiful. We choose to have a DIY wedding, and this place did not require us to use use any particular caterers or liquor vendor; we had our wedding catered by Mr. Gyro's and we bought a keg from the Fremont Ale house- perfect! We pretty much rented out the entire top level of the blue building. With all the different rooms with amazing views of Greenlake and the Cascades, its gives the guests lots of cool places to mingle during the reception. Also, it's way more affordable than nearly any other option we found (and it includes all the set up equipment: tables, charis, loud speakers, microphone). We brought in all our own flowers, balloons, and other decorations, and it looked rustic and beautiful. Highly recommend it! read more

I attended a meeting and met the marketing director and one of the shop owners, spent a fair amount of time with them. I'm impressed! So many business owners and neighbors coming together for the sake of the neighborhood and helping each other promote their businesses. A great neighborhood resource, with community classes in all kinds of things (dance, exercise, art, home maintenance, alternative energy), a weekly contra dance and Saturday night concerts sponsored by the Seattle Folklore Society in the Community Hall, several children's programs including a cooperative pre-school and an afterschool program.
