i visited for the very first time on this sunny afternoon with friends to try the fish and chips :) the service was so lovely! the lady at the counter was very sweet and friendly. the man who brought the food out was also very kind and helpful. the restaurant is decorated very quirkily, and it was endearing. there is lots of character in the place for sure! the food was decent. to be honest, i found the price a little steep for the quality, portion size, and self-service nature of the restaurant. i paid $32.56 for a 1pc fish and chips meal with gravy and coleslaw + 15% tip. again, it was a good enough meal but rather steep for lunch, especially when i have had better and fresher fish and chips in the area at a lower price point. this is more of a preference thing but i was disappointed to find there was no ice in the soft drink, which also only came in one size (large). i could barely finish it, i really would have preferred to pay less for a smaller size. the gravy was absolutely delicious, and i will definitely come back just to have it again with some fries. i didn't see whether they serve poutine or not, but i'm sure it would be incredible if they do. overall okay, just expensive for what it is. read more

I was at this location again having the very best fish and chips! It always perfect!! I enjoy the two you people working the counter. It's was so busy, but things ran so smoothly. The young man and woman were having a great time joke with each other. All it did was made them both work extremely well together. Like I said it's the only place I buy fish and chips. The price is competitive, but the quality doesn't suffer. So thank you for the excellent food and the in house comedy show! I will always rate this Hutch's location 5 stars! read more

They only accept cash and they ding you $2.50 plus your bank fee's at the in-store ATM for a withdrawal. Nice. I wonder if the CRA would be interested in taking a close look at their 'cash only' business seeing as there is more than likely tax avoidance taking place here. To make matters worse we find out after that it is well known around Hamilton that Hutch's management doesn't share the tips from the tip jar with the workers despite them being on servers wages. Disgraceful. Beyond that the pace is worn out and tired looking and in need of a good cleaning or better yet a complete renovation. The large garbage can beside the pick up window was over flowing and the entire waiting area had a strong smell of rancid milk. Not very pleasant or appetizing. Conclusion: Hutch's is vastly over-rated, is sadly riding on little more than nostalgia and I will never go back. read more

Stopped by on a cold rainy day for what else - ice cream! We ordered a 'kiddie scoop'. Which was LARGE AND IN CHARGE. This is absolutely all you need if you are in a "Treat. Yo. Self" mood. It's sure not the same as Hutchs on the Beach. Tried it once a couple of years ago, and decided to stick to the beach location. Were by there a day or so ago and thought we needed a snack, and ordered a large fries. That confirmed our decision to stick to the beach. Fries were mediocre in taste -, there were some large "chunks" as well. I worked at Hutches for a few months and left just a few weeks ago..Got only a very small portion of my tips as did most of the employees..Some got nothing..When I confronted the manager Sandi she told me I was very F****** ungreatfull and a bad person .She said the accountant was responsible for distribution of tips and she had nothing to do with it..I know that's a lie..She also refused to give me my last pay saying it would be mailed and told me to get out of HER restaurant..She is very unprofessional and has a mouth like a bad trucker..She is lining her pockets with the employees money..The owners are actually loosing money having someone like her manage their business..The short time I worked there I'm sure I threw away thousands of dollars worth of food that was spoiled and inedible but she was serving it anyways..The ( homemade soups ) are actually canned Campbell's soups..The gravy is also canned..No spices or seasoning in the batter..Rats running around everywhere..Very unhealthy place to work or eat..I've contacted Employment Standard Act and hopefully they can help.The manager Sandi is misleading the public and the employees are the ones that suffer in the end.. I just hope the actual owner and the accountant can see this..She needs to be stopped.Not a good look for your business. read more

1st ever fish and chips joint ever been to that doesnt have halibut dont even carry cod or sole ONLY HADDOCK might as well save cash and grab highliner fish and chips at a grocery store. 2 pieces of fish and ugliest looking fries 1550 that halibut prices if u ask me . i also ordered chicken fingers and fries fingers were good but no bbq sauce or sweat and sour sauce provided only plum sauce . fries didnt even look cooked no golden brown color at all quite shocking . salt ketchup forks had to be asked had i not would been eating with my hands . fish was too much batter not enough fish. had a sign now hiring fry guy i said u need a new cook ? they said only for french fries the guy said mainly we need a guy just to clean the fryer mostly. i said u dont clean? he said thats the one thing i dont do i had difficulty eating just imagining what fryer must look like. the real reason wont be back my bill was 30.03 gave him 40 he wouldnt even give me 10 back gave 9.95. like what a cheap ass i spend 30 bucks cant let me off with a nickle. read more

Hutch's Sandwich Menu Turkey Clubhouse Sandwich Hutch's (Waterfront location) 8.6 (Best new re-discovery) Discovering a whole sandwich menu at restaurant that is mostly known for their fish "n" chips is akin to realizing you have and extra 5 years to live after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Let's be honest; the fish and chips at Hutch's aren't great. This sandwich on the other hand is, very good. I was walking my dog, last night, while trying to avoid not handing out the candy that I didn't buy. I needed to kill time, and was hungry. Not starving. Just hungry. I walked past Hutch's, then doubled back. I stared into the empty restaurant and made eye contact with the only visible employee, that was probably cleaning the tables (of the barren eating area) for the 5th time. I thought 'hmnf, I thought they closed after the ice cream season was over. Interesting.' As usual Max started whining as soon as I tied him within eyeshot of the order desk. I noticed the sandwich section of the menu when I was creeping outside. Due to my 'old man eyes' I need a better vantage point in order to understand the scope of it. Blue plastic letters clipped into a white, neon-lit, backing. Good start. I knew they weren't trying to re-invent any of the selections on the menu ie. the grilled cheese probably had Kraft singles etc. The first item on the sandwich on the menu was a corned-beef on rye, then came the BLT, then there it was; the clubhouse. I could taste the mayo, feel the oversized toothpicks and predict the texture of the perfectly toasted white bread, before I even settled on it. fries? she asked. No, just the sandwich. I replied Followed by; oh, you have soda water. I'll take one of those. I thought the soda water would be free, I mean, it's just soda. I didn't really care that she charged me for it, as with the sandwich and taxes it was still under $10. Eat in or take out? Take out. I knew Max would be cross with me if I left him outside while I enjoyed my bespoke selection indoors. As I waited for my order I notice they had one of those 'hidden image' posters hanging on a wall. You know, the ones that you have to look past the image in order to see the hidden one? I never mastered them in the 90s and soon realized I still didn't have the patience. Here's your order, would you like any catsup or mustard? Catsup please. I took the sandwich and my fizzy water outside. Untied, then re-tied max onto the picnic table I chose, and peeled back the tin foil. No styrofoam, just a paper plate covered in tin foil. Everything worked together to satisfy my tastebuds. The turkey and bacon were salty, the mayo was creamy, the lettuce and bread were crunchy. A home run. Great job Hutch's. I'm looking forward to making my way down this newly discovered portion of your menu. read more

Hutches is way too pricey. A kiddie cone is $3.25! You can get kiddie cones up the street for only 1.45 at the Sugar Shack on McNab St. Also there is a high turn over of young workers who get take advantage of and don't get their breaks most of the time. I personally don't care to give my business to people who break labours laws and charge an arm and a leg for kiddie cones. read more
