After my disastrous Dairy Queen Holiday Nog Milkshake, I had to drop into Hutch's to get a proper milkshake with real ice cream! I ordered the Pistachio Almond Milkshake ($5.45). This had a good mixture of pistachio and almond flavours. It was mainly almond ice cream with pistachio pieces. The only difficulty is that 30% of the pieces were a little too big for the straw; probably this flavour was never meant to be used as a milkshake. Stopped by for ice cream and ended up ordering fish and chips because the smell when you walk in just pulls you in. I tried the Peanut Butter Cup ice cream and the sugar-free Black Cherry. There are probably only one or two sugar-free options, but the pricing is really reasonable and definitely cheaper than the GTA. The Peanut Butter Cup was good, though I wish the chocolate flavor was a bit richer. I'd give it an 8/10. The Black Cherry was delicious and easily a 10/10. For food, I ordered the large fish and chips for $18. It's a great deal because the two pieces of fish are huge. The small order is $11.95. My picture didn't show it well since the second piece of fish was hiding underneath, but it was just as big. The fries are super thick, perfect for dipping in gravy. I got a side of gravy and loved it. It had that classic poutine flavor without being too salty. The only thing I'd change is I wish the fries were cooked a little longer. Overall, I'd give the fish and chips an 8/10. The diner itself is much bigger than I expected. You order at the counter, get a number, and they call it out when it's ready. What's cool is they also have speakers outside, so if you're waiting by the path or at the picnic tables, you can still hear your number. That's a nice place to stop by in the summer, right on the beach. We were there with my friends on Saturday lunch time so it was pretty busy, your order might take around 10-15 min to be served. Diner is big and clean, very traditional North American style. It was full of families with noisy kids, but you could take your meal to go and enjoy it on the beach. The quality of the food is quite consistent with its price, which is pretty affordable. read more

Stopped in for lunch and I can see why this place is such a popular spot! I got the cheeseburger with everything on it and a side of fries. The portions for the fries are very generous and they're almost like fry nubs, if that make sense. The burger was just fine to me. Based on what I saw others ordering seems like the fried fish is definitely the more popular option here. The one thing I did really really love was the ice cream that they scoop, which is right around the corner from the main food ordering area. They had easily over 25 options to choose from and it was the toughest decision I had to make today lol! Definitely would stop by again to try other things on the menu because the prices were very reasonable and considering how busy they were the wait time was not bad at all. Hutch's has been around for long as I can remember and is an institution in Hamilton. I haven't been there in a while but found myself there last Sunday with a friend who came in from out of town. As soon as I walked in, I was shocked at how far it had deteriorated to the point of disgusting. Ceiling tiles were falling down, dead flies in all the light fixtures in the ceiling, cracked seats with upholstery stuffing protruding and just a general feeling of filth and decay. I was ashamed and apologized to my friend, as we left. What an embarrassment to the city and people who have supported this business over the years. This place needs a major overhaul to bring it back to the place we all knew and loved. Because as it stands, this place is a dump!!!! read more

My wife and I like to go for scenic drives from Toronto along the lake shore. We often stop at Hutch's. The food is good and reasonably priced. I usually have the club and my wife likes the fish and coleslaw. The view is spectacular. I think the people working here realize they are somewhere special. Stumbled upon this place while driving through Hamilton. There was a wait time of 25-35 min (which was pretty accurate) and the place had lots of seating. This is one of the few places to eat along the beach. We stopped in late for some ice cream after playing mini golf at Adventure Village down the road. Came here for the first time ever and ordered the famous house cut thick french fries and gravy. A little pricey as it costed almost )9.00 including tax and the amount of fries was a very small side dish amount. They were delicious and would come back to try the fish & chips or the milkshake another time. It was the middle of the day when lunch device was probably at ifs' peak. The food was prepared and ready at a decent considering the time of day. The atmosphere and ambiance felt like an old fashioned cafe with small booths and half the size of a standard table. This place gets really busy and there was a thirty minute wait when we came here. Haven't heard of this place before but was looking for restaurants around the area when I was in Hamilton. It's pretty close to the highway so we decided to stop by. There was a big queue at the front and another queue inside for the ice cream which is separated (I believe). A Hammy classic with all the right things to say yay to a fish n chips at the bay. they employ young workers throughout the summer (which is very admirable behaviour from a small chain) I highly recommend having one of their milkshakes I go with strawberry you can go with whatever you want, but strawberry is the best. Oh, and make sure to be adamant about the proportions of tartar sauce because I dose mine in quite a bit . They don't make their own tartar sauce however, I am also bias in the sense that I prefer the packaged deal if you know what I mean. be sure to get some swag. Nothing cooler than a hutches shirt. We were in Hamilton just driving around and checking things out, and I discovered that Hutch's On The Beach had been around since 1946 (!), so obviously we had to check the place out. We arrived just a few minutes after they opened on a recent Saturday, and the place was already busy with customers. The wait for our food was about 20 minutes, but I would imagine it gets much worse during peak times. We had heard that the fries are outstanding, so obviously we ordered the biggest size they have. And yes, they are indeed phenomenal fries. Nice and chunky, they've got an irresistible crunch yet are completely pillowy on the inside. I would be eating those fries constantly if I lived in the area. I also decided to try their Hammer Burger, which is just a single patty adorned with lettuce, sauteed onions, and a spicy mayo sauce. The toppings are all top-notch but the patty is dry and unspectacular, and the bread tasted a little stale. My dining companion got a hot dog, and that seems to be a much better (and tastier) bet. read more

It doesn't matter how good the food is as it's the only game in town. :) There is a large menu with numerous items but we are on a poutine mission from Cali so you know what we ordered. Poutine - 6 Decent gravy and cheese but they were a little light on the cheese and gravy. The fries were kinda hard and took work to bite through. With a little adjustment and fresher fries this could be legit. Strawberry vanilla shake - 7 Pretty thin and sweet but wasn't bad. The paper straw actually lasted but there wasn't any fruit in the shake. Well, the quality was good for the location and I bet the fish n chips can be quite good here. I think I got a touch unlucky on my timing with the fries. I wouldn't avoid this place if I found myself at this beach spot again. read more

Wait times can be over an hour but they're a staple for the Hamilton beach area so it just gets packed. Went for ice cream yesterday (Labor Day) and boy was it busy. But, the line moved pretty quick and they give you a ticket to pick up your order. We ordered a cone and a shake and both were really good but they use Nestle ice cream which you can just buy in the grocery store. Small come was very reasonably priced. The service was friendly. The moment you walk in the door, you'll realize that time has stopped at Hutch's Dingley Dell. This is the place to get tasty, old fashioned deep-fried fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. There is plenty of painted wood diner-booth seating. The booths in the back are set by large windows overlooking the lake. It's truly an amazing view. Okay. So with much recommendation from coworkers I picked yo try this place today. I had chicken fingers with fries. Chicken fingers wasn't special, tasted like the ones they sell in big box stores. The fries needed some kind of seasoning, bland. However, the onion rings were good, how can you not go wrong with onion rings though? I had a piece of my friend fish (halibut) and it tasted pretty good, juicy inside and oily but crispy outside. This is another, comfort food on a cheat day when you try to live that healthy lifestyle. The venue reminds me of a big public washroom in which they divided half to a restaurant and other half a washroom. They could def do some renovations and get rid of unnecessary decor like the "jukebox?" Placed 0.25 cents and no song. Parking was reasonable. The real reason to going here is the beach. Do you have a life so empty you have nothing better to do than wait hours for "fast" food? Then this is the place for you! We had heard about this restaurant and how great it was, so while normally we would get real restaurant food on a Saturday, we decided to drive over and get fast food just for the experience, finding out for ourselves why people love this place so much. And, what an experience. We knew it would probably be busy, and were a little intimidated by the lineup to the door, but quickly realized there were only five people in front of us at the cash. We eventually placed our orders and one of us grabbed a table while the other two waited for our food. And waited. And waited. And waited. I popped into the bathroom, usually a sure way for food to arrive when I am not there to help carry it. Nope, still waiting. I traded places and waited at the table while the other two waited for food. Eventually my husband appeared with my food, yay! It was about an hour wait for those fish and chips but at least our orders were finally coming up. Being polite, I waited for everyone else to join me before digging in. Maybe 15 minutes later my husband showed up with his hamburger, still waiting for the third order, but by that point I was well past the point of starving, my food was getting cold, and I started eating. We thought the third order was coming up next, but it was another half hour before that friend finally got his hamburger. I have tried to give the restaurant the benefit of a doubt as much as possible. Maybe they were cooking orders one-at-a-time, burnt his burger or dropped it on the floor, and had to make another. Still not half an hour. For the life of me I have not been able to come up with an acceptable excuse for taking half an hour to cook a hamburger, even ignoring the rest of the wait before that. Do they only have one cook who took his lunch break in mid-order? Did they run out of hamburger and have to slaughter a cow out back? As for the food, the fries were good, like you would get at a chip truck or fish and chips shop. The fish tasted good but the proportions were tiny. I expected the big hunk of fish you get in a restaurant, but it was a thin piece like the frozen ones I had to cook as a teen. I was hungry after finishing my meal but did not want to brave a possible two hours to get ice cream. No way. They also gave me a tiny little cocktail fork to eat my meal, and my husband could not find a proper fork. Finally he had to ask and they produced a plastic fork from behind the counter. Saves money I guess. The food here was ok, certainly not worth the extremely excessive wait. This seems to be a horribly-run restaurant. As much as I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, there is no excuse for taking an extra half hour to cook a hamburger on top of more than an hour wait. What are their employees doing??? Do you enjoy standing around doing nothing for over an hour? Do you enjoy choosing between eating with your friends or eating cold food? Then you will love Hutch's! Great place, ask for the fries to be well done because of the thickness sometimes it's a little raw. Best time to go is threw the week, the older staff or the a team is on duty. Love the tartar sauce would drink it if possible. Not many people know this but you can ask for lemon packets with your fish, it's very well managed. Staff is always friendly, I feel the older staff care more, and have been employed for years which is a good thing I think, they honour the age old traditions. read more

Decided to stop and give Hutch's a shot while driving up to Toronto. There is a big parking not next to the beach and pathway. You can walk out of this place to see Lake Ontario and many people who are either walking or biking on the pathway next to the lake. Inside of Hutch's, there was a pretty long line but it moved fairly quickly which was nice. With the place being very crowded, I thought it was very clean and you can constantly see employees cleaning all around the restaurant. As for the food, we ordered two plates of the fish and chips as it was recommended by the person taking our order. With the long lines, it took about 10 minutes to get our food which was much faster than expected. The portions are huge for the the fish and chips, you will not leave hungry. They place the fish on a paper plate and stack it with a mountain of french fries. The fries were very thick which took away from the crispiness, but they were still good. The fish itself was just okay, it was much greasier compared to the fries. The fish had a thick layer of batter that got fried which gave it a good crisp especially on the edges. If I went back I would probably order a different dish. One suggestion would be to have more sauces than just ketchup and tar tar sauce. The tar tar sauce was a bit bland. There is also an ice cream shop within the establishment that seemed to be fairly popular but I did not get to try it. read more
