I'd have to say that we'd give this location 4.5/5 stars, mainly due to the lack of variety in the meat section. Otherwise, this location is great and the staff is always friendly and helpful. The spice profile is great for all the dishes; however, they do not velvet (tenderize) their beef, pork, or chicken, making all these very tough and chewy. At most Chinese restaurants the meats are very tender and easily bitten and chewed. This toughness makes most of their dishes a deal-breaker unless you go with straight veggies. Working your way through the meats is not enjoyable. Velveting is an added step they could use to make it top-notch, food. I've yet had HyChi yet that does this, however. read more

One cultural difference within the Midwest are grocery stores that serve a good selection of hot prepared food and offer large comfortable seating areas for sharing a meal and socializing. Then of course, there's the accent, which is only thick to those of us who have been away for awhile. Oh do ya? My parents come here occasionally and today, I don't think there was a farm couple or a group of guys or gals under 50 in the whole room. The comfort food was also pretty darn tasty and of "You Betcha" that that it was relatively cheap. The flat screen TV was a also a nice touch. Otherwise, this HyVee is a large and nicely stocked grocery store, that features a bank, a pharmacy, and a separate liquor store. And if you can't find that bottle of wine or micro brew that you're looking for, an even better stocked Cyclone Liquors is just across the parking lot. read more

Best place to buy groceries in town, period. Maybe it's because I'm in there so often, but they're always extremely friendly, and it really works as a "one stop" place. They have the alcohol and spirits section, the health food section, a Starbucks, the hot food, Chinese food, and bakery section, and of course, the pharmacy and medicine section. The front desk also does postal services, and you can recycle cans and bottles as well. The store has always been beyond helpful. While I haven't always been met with an "Employee of the Day" attitude (which I would never expect), they've always been pleasant enough and extremely friendly. I use my reusable bags constantly, and cashiers have never had any problem with them. When I point out a price error, a manager is called over and the price is honored. In fact, I went to Starbucks (inside the Hy-Vee) the other day, and while checking out, the cup was knocked onto the ground and spilled all over the floor. I was mortified - to say the least. (Now I wait until I'm done shopping to get my Starbucks). Within seconds, two employees were there cleaning it up, and a manager asked me what coffee it had been. By the time I was swiping my card, he brought me another version of my drink - free of charge. Seriously, an amazing grocery store. When I have to travel around the midwest and go to other Hy-Vees for groceries or whatnot, I'm always sorely disappointed compared to this one. This one has spoiled me. read more

First, this is NOT the west Ames food store, but the EAST one. Second, while I have loved the food at this store in the past, we got a couple items that were very disappointing. We went to the food court and got some Chinese food, the lomein had NO veggies in it. It was simply spaghetti( never had this before!). It was blah. One of us got the orange shrimp($1 upcharge) and the other got sesame chicken. The sesame chicken was good, just like it always is. The orange shrimp, however, was TOUGH. Most of the shrimp were out of the breading and were cooked to the LEATHER stage. While I do like beef jerky, I don't like my shrimp to taste or have the consistency of jerky. I ended up eating my friends chicken with them. The cost? Right up there with Panda Express. But Panda Express has a drive through. As for the store. Clean. The staff was friendly. Family friendly. My family had a disappointing customer experience at this Hyvee today. We had placed an online order (Hyvee Aisles). We went to pick up the order the next day. When we reached home, we saw that around 20 items were missing from the order. We went back. The delivery person at this store was not able to help as his perspective was that the order had not been packed. He pointed us to the customer service desk. The customer service desk asked us to contact the fulfillment center and said the fulfillment center would resolve it. At this point, we had made two trips to the store (for what was supposed to be a convenient pick up) and had interacted with store personnel who could not help in any manner apart from punting us to different departments. We did not get the sense that the personnel at the store were trying to help us. Upon returning home, we called the fulfillment center. The person on the phone finally was friendly enough and took down a list of all the items that were missing and told us the items would now be delivered the next day. Overall, very unsatisfactory experience. We were left with a bad taste for this local Hyvee due to the fact that we could not get much help from the team there. read more

The only pharmacy I will ever go to, Hyvee west pharmacy. I've picked up my prescriptions here for 5 years now and I am always impressed with their quick service and now they even recognize me. I moved recently so it was a little out of my way anymore so I tried switching to CVS and it just wasn't the same. I don't even care if I have to drive to the opposite side of town for my meds, it's always worth the trip. And the drive up window is a huge plus. And if I have time to burn or need a few groceries, I'll go in and grab a Starbucks drink too. If you want fast and prompt service, I recommend them. read more

I prefer going to West Hyvee but this Hyvee is much better for midnight shopping. You don't have to wave down an employee to get attention and they're pretty great on the customer service. Prices tend to be more expensive at this Hyvee than the West location, but this location usually has a wider selection. read more

Awesome store!!! Helpful people and great customer service. Meat market are really helpful and love how they have a good variety of gluten free food. They are the only store that sells bacon salt too. Love also how everything is clearly displayed. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this HyVee. Their selection is pretty good and the customer service is great, but their prices are high. They've slowly started to add specialty items that I used to only be able to get at Whole Foods, but they're marked up. While WF sells Kite Hill almond yogurt for $2 each, they're $2.50 here. Kite Hill Ricotta is between $6-8 at Whole Foods and $10 at this HyVee. These products are cheaper at Wheatsfield. Gardein is $6 regular price, compared to around $4 at Walmart/Target. Their brand of Almond Milk is 50% more expensive here than the West Ames location. I've seen avocados sell for $2.50 each, which is way too expensive. This location is fine if you have extra money to spend, but not ideal for people on a budget. I've also purchased a lot of expired food from here, so keep an eye on that. read more

Of those of the Ames grocery scene, East Hyvee rocks the buffet. I've never sampled the food, but the view is great (lotta windows) and nest people often eat there. Looks like your typical buffet w/eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit, yogurt. Their produce is expensive and of poor quality. Lots of sad wilty greenery. They do have the occasional sale of an item or two, but not often enough to garner regular consumerism. read more

This Hy-Vee is the best place to acquire seasonal fresh seafood in Ames. They routinely stock delicacies like Copper River Salmon, fresh halibut and crawfish. Their prices tend to be spendy for everyday grocery items. Very strong deli and food court. read more

Visiting family in Ames and ran several errands to Hy-Vee. Love this place. Wide aisles, bright, clean, quality produce and fresh meats, and just abundant and often surprising selections of everything. Can't imagine they don't have what you need, whatever you decide to cook. I shop at this location all the time. Everybody's great. I really like the bakery. I order all of my cakes here. Dawn Cole, the bakery manager, is great. She is on a first name basis with a lot of the people that go in there. Very nice personal touch. read more

Awful experience, multiple times. Just about every time I have gone there, they have lost my prescription. The women working are rude and oblivious. If you have a prescription you absolutely need and cannot skip, don't go here because they will drop the ball when communicating with you or your doctor.
