Their tandoori chicken gyro dinner is a must-try. Sorry folks, I gobbled it all no photos

This is definitely my favorite spot in Ames! Pammel is a hole in the wall grocery store with a little deli in the back. They serve incredibly delicious mediterranean food at a very reasonable price. The owner is incredibly friendly, which just adds to an already extremely positive experience. There's really not much else to say, you're gonna want to come here if you are looking for delicious food and friendly people. Definitely check it out!

Wasn't to sure about how to get here- the pin was a little off. Not your typical place you would think to find in Ames! They have a huge selection of grocery items as well a deli. I ate at the deli with a few friends- is is an open area and can take a while but it fresh and made to order. See my photos of my food. Yum

Found what I was looking for. Mango pickle and lime. Freshly made Tabouli. You have to call ahead for that. They need an hour because they get busy. I ordered two orders so I would have enough for the week. Also got a couple orders of hummus and pita bread. Had a lot of things on the menu that looked good. So I will be back for takeout. All the great reviews for this place were spot on!!!

One of the best restaurants in Ames. Even though they struggle to maintain their top quality on a consistent basis, I've generally been very satisfied with the food here. Their very reasonably priced steaks are a must try for everyone

This is one of my favorite restaurants period. It just happens to be in the back of an ethnic grocery store. It is always near the top of the list as a go-to favorite for my wife and I, even from 20 miles away. I've been to Middle-Eastern restaurants in much larger cities and this is the the yard stick by which all others are judged. Sure it's in the back corner of a grocery store. Yes, it's a no-frills dining area, and self-service drinks. The halal quality food here is the star, and it's so bright. The owner is very helpful in guiding new patrons and old to what is good, and how it should be prepared. The gyro meat here is the gold standard example of how it should work. Artfully created by hand and carved off the rotisserie to order. Couple this with exceptional tzatziki sauce, and some optional chili peppers and your are face-to-face with the most compelling gyro sandwich within hundreds of miles. The falafels are the lightest, crispiest and best tasting I've found anywhere. The consistency, freshness and mild flavor of the hummus here has ruined me for anything else. They've ingeniously created several combos over the past year or so that allow patrons to experience their best items. I first time visitors' best bet would be the Gyro with Falafel Dinner, or the Kofta, Hummus and Falafel. My personal favorites are the Gyro and the chicken kebab. This is one of the absolute must-try eateries in Ames.

We finally ate lunch here today after hearing about the amazing gyros from a friend a few months ago. What a mistake it was to wait so long! It's a little strange to walk in here for the first time, the front is a small grocery store with shelves. But once you get to the back there are several tables and a counter with a menu board. We were greeted with a very welcoming smile that made us feel good about the experience right off the bat. I ordered the gyro special that comes with 4 falafel, rice, and tzatziki. My boyfriend ordered the gyro sandwich and added feta and fries on the side. There are a few refrigerated cases full of all kinds of drinks and you pick what you want and it is added to the bill later on. After ten minutes or so our food was brought out. First, I tried a piece of the gyro meat alone. I have been to many amazing Greek restaurants, authentic and family owned, as well as Greektown in Detroit. This is by far some of the best gyro I have EVER tasted. It was juicy and melted in my mouth with the best flavors. Neither of us could get over the fact that the best food in Ames, Iowa just so happened to be in the back of a family owned grocery store! Besides the meat, the falafel were cooked perfectly, the french fries were some of the best I've ever had, the pita was grilled hot and delicious, and the tzatziki was excellent. This is the type of food where it tastes just as good at the end of the meal as it does from the start. You know when you eat something that tastes good the first few bites, then after awhile it's just food to put in your stomach? This isn't that kind of meal. This is perfection to the last crumb. The owner/cook came over and asked how everything was and we couldn't tell him enough how impressed we were and that he has a true talent in the kitchen. It seems like his family members are here as well and add a positive vibe to the whole meal, you can hear them laughing and talking to one another in the background. To sum it up, if you are in Ames, Iowa and you want amazing food, get to Pammel Grocery and order a gyro. You will want seconds.

Stellar food and service. Incredibly flavorful and the staff was very friendly. The spicy gyro was as good or better than any I've had!

I know the pictures that I took may not do them justice, but I can assure you, the sandwiches are always amazing. The quality and quantity of the ingredients on the sandwiches is great each time. All of the produce is fresh and has a nice crunch to it, and the meat has never seemed off in any way. Also, the bread that they use is really good in terms of being soft, but not mushy, and it doesn't overpower the inside of the sandwich ingredients. We got a side salad from them as well, and it was quite delicious. Service: Each time we go in, we are greeted politely, and we are able to get our order pretty quickly. There's never really a wait time, and the staff is always working really hard to ensure that everybody is served in a timely fashion. Ambiance: Inside is always kept very clean, and it is decently large. It's definitely good for medium-sized groups or a one-on-one dine-in experience. It also always smells amazing! The theme inside is very fitting, and it's quite nice to look at while you eat.

I had a coupon, so today got a sandwich, the loaded potato soup and some garlic bread to dunk into the soup. The steak with carmelized onions was ok. This is the first time I've gotten potato soup that was anything but loaded. There are potato chunks, some bacon and the taste of cheese in it and it's thick. After getting this soup maybe 5+ times over the years, this is the first time I've actually gotten the "loaded" part and it's really good. I think it depends on the workers. Mix it up and scoop from the bottom. My previous entries about this soup essentially said "where's the loaded part?" Staff was very friendly. Place was clean. And today, I'm glad I got the soup.

Food: While the ingredients were fresh, the flavor just wasn't there. The ratio of ingredients to…read morebread/tortilla is pretty off as well. The entire inside of the sandwich would fall out with every bite; it was pretty frustrating. Same goes for the wrap. It was overstuffed (normally not a bad thing), so each bite resulted in the inside falling out as well as the torn tortilla, which made it almost impossible to hold to eat. The meat was dry (chicken and roast beef), so both items could've done with a bit more sauce/flavor and the sandwich was supposed to be toasted; they didn't toast it :/ The price point for the quality of food just isn't there. It's overpriced for subpar food. Service: Possibly all of the employees said "Welcome to Jimmy John's" as we entered. One employee in particular (a slightly older gentleman) was really welcoming and said hello as we approached the counter. The other employees didn't really look up much, besides one young lady (possibly a trainee), who seemed really irritated with our presence. Every time she made eye contact, she looked annoyed with us. Our food came out quickly though. It came out wrong, but quick. Ambiance: Overall, it was loud. No matter the spot inside, it was loud in there. The seating areas weren't really cleaned well (if at all?) with food debris scattered about; we wiped a booth down to sit and eat. We didn't get any pictures of our food because we really just wanted to leave. It was uncomfortable eating there.
