Living in Hillcrest has so many components that make it a terrific place to live, and one of the…read moreforemost among them is having Prime Fitness just around the corner from my house. Conveniently located on First Street and accessible 24 hours, the gym is clean and well-maintained. Occupying the entire ground floor of a building, it has a feeling of spaciousness about it. Doors that open to the small patio area, along with ceiling fans, enable good air circulation throughout the space. Fellow gym-goers are friendly and always willing to engage when you approach them about routines or exercises. No attitude at this place whatsoever. People are genuinely happy to share their successes and reflections on their own self-journeys to fitness, which makes the gym feel like not only a place the place where you can go to work out, but also a place where you can continually learn from other gym enthusiasts about ways to improve your own focus on physical improvement. A sense of a community among people with a common interest in health and fitness, and a willingness to share it, are two of of the most unique and notable characteristics of this gym. The owner, Keith Deidrich, pays meticulous attention to the gym's layout and functionality, resulting in a nice rotation of machines and weights throughout the space. It's exciting to come in to find a new machine, such as the very impressive cable crossover set up, complete with high bars for dead-hangs and pull-ups, or a one-of-a-kind lat pull-over machine that requires the force of your elbows, placed on pads and pushing down, to accomplish the exercise. It's like a squat machine for the upper body. In addition to the machines and freeweights, the gym has add-on weight blocks in gradations of two-and-a-half pounds that are custom-made to be inserted on top of the machine pulley racks to increase the resistance in smaller increments when the built-in 10- or 15-pound increases are too much of a step-up. Being able to use these blocks has enabled me to slowly increase the amount I'm lifting without making a jump up to a higher weight that is just too heavy. And there are plenty of cardio machines as well. In short, this neighborhood-centered gym with its relaxed vibe, excellent equipment, and friendly and respectful members makes working out a highlight of my daily schedule.

The gym stays quiet and focused. No crowds, no waiting, no distractions. There's even a small outdoor area for stretching, which is a nice bonus. Parking in the back is consistently available, which is rare for this area and a huge plus. Keith, the owner, clearly takes pride in the space. It shows in how well everything is kept and the overall atmosphere. If you're looking for a low-key, non-corporate gym that's clean, calm, and easy to stay consistent in, this is it.

The gym is huge to start so it is almost guaranteed that the machine you want will be available, even during peak hours. They really pride themselves on cleanliness and that is the most important aspect to me. Members are always wiping down their equipment before and after use and the employees are periodically cleaning all around. The locker rooms & restrooms are spacious with many spots available so that there is no stalling between guests. The amenities are wonderful - sauna, steam, tanning, gym equipment, kids club - EVERYTHING!! Do a 7 day trial and I promise you will be anting to sign up on day 3!

It was the primary reason I joined. Unfortunately, the circuit has never functioned as described. Staff doesn't enforce the intended rotation, and members routinely treat the machines like standard equipment -- sitting between sets, often on their phones, with no regard for others trying to move through. When I asked to work in during rest periods, I was met with outright rudeness. Even when staff stepped in to explain the circuit guidelines, members pushed back. A gym is only as good as the culture it cultivates. Enforcing the features you sell -- and holding members to basic courtesy standards -- should be non-negotiable. This gap between what was promised and what I experienced is why I cancelled my membership. I was also sold a personal training package by their independent in-house fitness training company and it was also not as presented--the trainer didn't listen to me, cut my session short, and never gave me the exercise plan as promised. I'm still fighting to get my $379 back for this.

His voice is enthusiastic, his direction is clear and his energy is off the charts. The bikes were all upgraded in the past couple years. The studio is sparkling clean. And I do appreciate that they offer earplugs at the front desk, just in case you'd like them, cause it is LOUD in there! A lot of people complain about the parking situation, but there is always parking here. The lot is tight, but there's also an underground parking garage where the spaces are bigger and you can always find a space.

CYCLE BAR @ HILLCREST…read more Parking here is honestly a massacre. It gets extremely busy, especially on weekends. The parking situation just isn't the greatest. There are so many popular spots around CycleBar like Trader Joe's, Oakberry, and other busy restaurants so finding a space can definitely be difficult. But if you keep circling around, you'll eventually find one. I've been to CycleBar a few times before back home in Washington, and I was really excited to try this location for the first time. Unfortunately, my name got mixed up with someone else's and my reservation wasn't showing up on their screen, even though I had it on my phone. But the staff was super nice and got everything sorted out so I could still join the class. They gave me cycling shoes, and I loved that they wrote a cute little note on my locker. The whole vibe of CycleBar is something I've always loved the dark room with the red and purple lighting just feels so energizing. Our instructor was super upbeat and motivating, and I really enjoyed the flow of the class. The only critique I have is that it wasn't as challenging as the classes I've taken before; it felt more like a beginner-level ride. But it was still a great experience overall. I loved the music selection and the energy of the people in the room. Overall, I'd definitely recommend trying CycleBar for your first ride and seeing if it's your vibe. I absolutely love cycling and would continue coming back.

The split between the upstairs and downstairs areas can be inconvenient depending on the workout but it's mostly fine. I've been dropping in here for almost a year, and the front desk staff has always been friendly and helpful with me. My interaction with the owner today, however, left me feeling really put off. First, he gave me a hard time about the drop-in rate and was telling me about some personal trainers trying to sneak clients (I wasn't sure if he was suggesting I was trying to do that but it made me feel uncomfortable). Later, he asked me to not drop my bb on the lifting platform while deadlifting because it's too loud (I've always done that, that's what the lifting platform is for...). I couldn't help but to feel like I was being patronized because I am a woman. I've trained at many gyms over the years. This was the first time I've felt treated with so little regard as a client. I've liked this gym before but I won't be coming back again.

I took myself on a little gym tour, trying to find a good replacement and though all the options were so much better than my former gym, North Park Fitness really stood out to me! The person working there when I came in for a little tour was very kind, I never felt pressured to join, he answered all my questions, and then has continued to recognize me ever since. It just felt very personable! He also took the time to make sure the gym would meet my needs and even offered to ask him any time if I ever needed help using a machine I was unfamiliar with. I love how clean everything is, and I notice how on top of it they are at fixing anything broken. In the year I've gone here, my favorite machine has had a rip in the seat twice and both times it was fixed within a few days of me noticing it. I appreciate that they fix things even when it doesn't affect the mechanics of the machine! They also have a huge variety of equipment, more options than when I was at my former gym that was much bigger. The only complaints I have, in my opinion, are not easy to change with a small, local gym in North Park. North Park Fitness can't change the parking options, that's a North Park problem. It is a bit pricey, but again, that's a North Park problem. I also researched and found a couple other small gyms near the area that were much more expensive, so I appreciate not having to pay hundreds of dollars each month at North Park Fitness!

This gym offers a wide variety of bootcamp like classes with fantastic energy and some truly talented coaches. While there are a few who are overly egotistical and could use a come back to earth reality check and a touch more humility, the majority of the coaching staff is excellent. Two standouts are Gabrielle Y. and Christian Q., who make working out an absolute pleasure. Gabrielle's welcoming demeanor and contagious positivity create a great atmosphere, and Christian's coaching style is equally motivating and supportive. The classes themselves are high-energy, challenging, and adaptable to different fitness levels. What I love most is that each coach brings their unique style and energy to the table. Once you find the coach who resonate with you, it's easy to stick with them and stay consistent. The variety keeps things interesting, and you'll never get bored while working toward your fitness goals. One of the challenges, however, is parking. Since Lazy Acres put up signs claiming what feels like half the lot, finding a spot can be a headache. I've learned not to arrive too early because spots typically free up only once the previous class ends. While it can be frustrating to circle the lot, a little patience and timing go a long way. It's something to keep in mind when planning your visits. The gym itself could benefit from more regular cleaning and maintenance. A deep cleaning is definitely overdue, as dust, hair, and even cobwebs can be seen in corners. Some benches are rusty and could use replacing. While these issues don't take away from the quality of the workouts, they do detract from the overall experience. Many other gyms in the area have weekly professional cleaning services, which could be a great addition here to help maintain a fresher, more polished environment. Despite these minor drawbacks, Renegade remains a fantastic place to work out. The membership is reasonably priced, although ClassPass is still more affordable and offers lower price penalties for late cancellations. Overall, the quality of the classes and the dedication of standout coaches like Gabrielle and Christian make this gym worth checking out. If you're looking for a challenging yet welcoming environment to achieve your fitness goals, Renegade is a solid choice--just plan ahead for parking and connect with the coaches whose energy aligns with yours!

First off, there's 3 locations I have picked hillcrest because I love the shopping center which is next to my favorite places (Miniso and Trader Joe's and Handels ice cream). Parking lot is big! I usually come early so no issues there but maybe if you come at a busy time such as after 3pm might be busier. I did the intro 4 classss for new clients for about $90 I think. Classes are 45 mins and start exactly at the time. And the classes are sooo good! Each time I've had different instructors and every instructor I've had have been amazing. It's awesome because every class is different and you can always modify the moves to your own fitness level. I am postpartum so this is actually the first time I started working out after having my baby and it makes me feel so good. I have to thank my man for paying for my classes. They are a little bit expensive. But for me, this is worth it. It's my me time now and a fit mom is just an overall better mom lol. I feel like the amount of time the workout class is, is perfect it really makes me push myself. It's very clean in here and I love the aesthetic. It's so good. The reformers are also really nice and I definitely feel so toned after each workout even days later. I definitely want to try a new location just to see how the vibes are but this location is the one I found with the best ratings, if not just the class but the actual friendliness and helpfulness of the instructors which is why I came here. Even tho it's slightly more expensive. I miss being away and cannot wait to come back! Love this and can't believe I didn't try this sooner!
