I went into Hyatt Gun Shop after spending some time looking at Videos on YouTube and I thought I knew what I wanted to buy. I met DJ Hobbs who spent time with us explaining how some of the videos are sponsored and I really needed to spend some time shooting different guns as they all feel different based on our physical make up. He kept interrupting me and repeating the same response over and over. This was my first time purchasing a firearm for home protection and self defense. I live in the Gaston County area and have looked at Shooters Express and Hyatt Gun Shop for the purchase of a firearm and believe me I have done my research on what type of firearm I felt would best suit my needs and the store that I would purchase it from. Since this review is for Hyatt Gun Shop, let me start by saying the selection of firearms far exceeded what I was looking for and the staff was very helpful to a first time buyer like me. I was greeted within a couple of moments by a very knowledgeable and patient staff member who was able to answer all of my questions and also provide me with information that was also pertinent to any new gun owner. He took the time to explain all of the features of the firearm in a well thought out manner and also what ammunition would be best suited for home defense and target practice. There was no pressure to buy a certain type of gun or model, the information given was unbiased and straightforward. After deciding between two different firearms that I had been researching, I finally made my decision and filled out some paperwork to transfer the firearm into my name and verify that I was who I said I was. After finishing the paperwork, he showed me how to disassemble and reassemble the firearm, he showed me how to clean the firearm and most importantly he made sure that I was comfortable with handling the firearm safely before I purchased the firearm. Overall, I am very happy with my experience at Hyatt Gun shop, the staff, the selection and accessories that can be purchased to enhance your shooting experience. Earlier, I mentioned Shooters Express located in Mt. Holly. I went there first to see their selection of firearms and really wasn't that impressed. The selection was quite mediocre and overly priced. I guess with the hysteria going on now with gun control, Shooters Express is trying to get while the gettings good. I am not bashing Shooters Express, just stating my opinion and observation. When purchasing a firearm, you want a great selection, a helpful and patient staff, knowledgeable people who've been in the business a long time and you want to know that you're getting the right firearm for you and your needs. I found all of these and more at Hyatt Gun Shop and I highly recommend them. Granted, this is my first experience with them, but I believe they've earned a lifelong customer. read more

UPDATE: Thursday 8-22-13 I had to see it for myself. And see it for myself I did. We all know ammo has been scarce for a while. That has eased up a bit, but some .22 ammo and especially the CCI Mini-Mags are still really hard to find. Hyatt has CCI Mini-Mags...for $18.99 a box of 100!!! $10 more than they should be! $10 more than they themselves normally sell it for! Ever since the big ammo scare started, Hyatt has been and is still gouging people on their ammo prices, taking advantage of the market demand. I looked around at some of their .308, .223 and 30-06 and it looks like they've added $5 to $10 to every box of ammo in the store. I will not support anyone price gouging. I realize some of the customers in their good-ole-boy family are probably happy as a pig in slop going in that store, are probably getting good prices and deals, and are probably treated really well. But what does it tell you when two other gun stores say 80% of their customers shop their store simply because they won't step foot inside Hyatt ever again? I'm not a jerk. I'm not a moron. I'm actually a friendly, happy guy. And I never did anything in that store to make them dislike me for any reason. So it's NOT like I'm a jerk and they treat me badly for a good reason. Wanna pay $20 for 100 CCI Mini-Mags, $30 for American Eagle or Remington Core-Lokt ammo, and support that kind of condescension? Go ahead. I'll wait and support another store that values me as a customer, person and supporter of the 2nd Amendment and shooting sports rather than one who just sees me as a dollar sign to squeeze and a potential victim. read more

Lemme be clear. I don't own a gun. I'm not into shooting guns, or particularly even holding one. (My hands shake and I start feeling nauseous.) But I gotta say, after being in a few different gun shops for work...this place really takes the cake. I agree with Dave S. that Hyatt is a very highly respected shop. It's in fact one of the top 10 largest in volume gun dealers in the entire country. (One of the store employees even printed out the article to show me.) You'll see the vast selection of firearms on the walls, in the cases...and all the employees I talked to know their stuff inside and out. I was told the story behind machine guns, and the history behind certain handguns. The place is almost ALWAYS packed (even on Black Friday...when they don't offer any discounts/sales) and what I admire is how the salespeople take their time with each customer no matter how busy it is. Special ordered a firearm from here as a home defense weapon because this place was literally the only one I could find that would special order it at a fairly good price. It was purchased at their sale price of $548, which is roughly 24% off of the Mossberg MSRP of $711. The estimated time frame of when they would receive the special order item from the manufacturer was 4-6 weeks. Less than a week after placing the order, I receive a call from one of the employees at Hyatt informing me that my firearm has been received and is ready to ship as soon as I authorize the final charge. -NICE!- Happen to just look at their site today and notice that the particular firearm I ordered is now IN STOCK at their retail store and they have upped the price to $557 (22% off MSRP). They raised their price as soon as the item came in stock, which is NOT cool. Also not cool is the $17+ fee I was charged for using my credit card -- this is such a BS charge, that it pisses me off thinking about it. Why would you charge this BS fee when almost every employed person in today's society utilizes one or more credit card(s)?? I was also charged $40 for shipping, which is BS too because it doesn't cost all that to ship via UPS from one side of the US coast to the other. That's just the business's way of pocketing more money from customers who exercise their right to bare arms. HorseSh!t fees!! So let's have a gander at the time-frame it took me to receive my "peacemaker," from the day I ordered it to the day I received it. I had heard great things about this gun shop from my dad, so while in the area, I thought I should check it out myself (and my boyfriend needed to get some boy-shopping time in). We headed in and were casually walking through. Many salesman stopped to ask us if we needed. One asked if what were looking for, we replied that we were just looking. Then somehow the conversation got to a place where the man was saying that I needed a gun for protection.... Um, no I don't. I live in Dilworth. That really turned me off. They listed it as a "parts gun" but completely failed to disclose it was missing any parts. In fact, it is missing MOST of its parts including: a. Firing pin b. Firing Pin Spring c. Ratchet d. Hammer e. Recoil plate f. Recoil Plate screws g. Sear Rivet h. Sear Spring i. Hammer connecting hand j. Hammer screw k. Mainspring l. Pawl m. Pawl spring n. etc... etc...)? When I wrote to them asking for a refund and shipping label, they said too bad, I have to pay for shipping because they said it "would not fire". My hubby was on the hunt for a specific fire arm and he was able to find it online at Hyatts. We traveled about an hour to get to the store to pick up his order. The store itself is a lot bigger than I expected (or am used to) and it had a very large selection of items. The store also had many individuals working behind the shelf so while it was pretty busy for a Friday, it was pretty easy to find someone to help us. The salesman we ended up working with was very knowledgeable and helpful regarding my husband's questions. The process to pick up his order didn't take very long at all. I purchased my first handgun from them as well as attended their concealed carry class that they provided. Their customer service is great, however buyers please be aware that the prices they charge for their handguns are typically $100 more than competitors. I purchased a Taurus TX 22 from them for $450. While I am satisfied with the gun that I purchased, when I went down the street to Blackstone on Wilkinson Boulevard, I noticed that they had a wider selection of the TX 22 that I purchased and for cheaper prices. One was as low as $299. Needless to say I was very disappointed in myself for not having shopped around to compare prices. So if you do choose to buy from them, let it be a last resort. Not your first choice. However if you're looking for a gun shop that has a wide selection of handguns to look at and get a feel for as well as to get feedback or insight into how they feel and operate they're pretty cool. read more

Sold me a used gun as new, upon getting it home found major slide wear, barrel was clean, but rest of pistol obviously coated with powder, I understand they test fire the pistols from the factory, but I have 13 pistols and never seen one with this much wear or filth, when I brought it back the next morning I was told it is considered 'used' by me (I never fired it) and they would offer me 60% of my purchase price, will never buy another gun from them. read more

I'm not a gun expert but know enough to navigate my way through a basic conversation. So I went into Hyatt expecting a negative experience based on the reviews where people thought they were talked down to. That didn't happen. The two times I have been there to buy pistols, they were very friendly and not dismissive at all. It helped that I had already made my purchases online and all I had to do was surrender my purchase permits, sign the paperwork and go, but still, they made it fast and efficient and also suggested some inexpensive and useful accessories I hadn't thought of. All around me I heard people being given advice, suggestions, and other helpful conversations. I never heard anyone being rude. There were plenty of staff on hand to handle what was a surprising crowd on a weekday afternoon. It was a good experience and I will be back. read more

A word of warning for customers here. They will outright try to rip you off charging a $12 "Brady Fee", or as I heard on person working there call it "Brady Tax". They claim it is to " help offset our costs associated with the Brady Gun Control Act." on their website. Well, the only requirement under that law that was not present before is that they must call in and do your background check to a toll free number. So they are charging you $12 to make a phone call. A free phone call. All other paperwork requirements were the same since the 60's. But wait, it gets worse. The background check is only required for long guns. Here in NC a person buying a handgun is required to have either a purchase permit of CCW. All the employee of Hyatts must do is staple the purchase permit to the form, the form that was already required long before the Brady law, or simply write down the CCW permit number. So they tried to charge me $12 to write down a number on a form. If a store is this dishonest about this- what else would they be dishonest about? read more

Everybody has good/bad experiences anywhere...it's just part of the game. I, however, have not had one good experience the 5 times I've been in. Some of the staff seem friendly, while their helping customers of course because they are trying to make a sale. I'm a people watcher, every where I go even while shopping. One person I must point out who seems genuine, is the short chubby guy who sounds like he's from New York...seems like a cool guy, maybe. Another guy, the one who I've seen that sits at the front and has been there every time I've been, the bald guy, will NOT say one...single...word to anybody. Learn some customer service buddy and just smile at least. The last person I'll point out is, I think, Larry. Older guy who always wears overalls, country folk. He never tried to sell me anything but he didn't seem bothered when I had 100 questions about a rifle, so I felt it was right to say something good about him. So the next thing, I was a first time buyer, practically zero experience with guns and gun shops. I saw a firearm listed at what I thought was an unusual price for the gun (low price). I really really wish I remembered the guy's name because I would crucify him on this review, but I do know that he wasn't a salesperson and he worked I think in the "repair" area. So that's kinda why I trusted him, not salesy. Long story short, he said it was a misprint and that's why it was marked so low...wound up buying the gun because I thought it was a steal. Turns out it came with one less magazine and not the night sights that it was listed for. Huge pain in the ass, and yea somewhat my fault for not knowing better. That was what I got for being a newbie. Last thing...people, buy guns from out of state, they are ridiculously cheaper for heaven's sake. The prices at Hyatt, along with all their other "fees" are just simply ridiculous. There is no bargain or good deals or even "sales" at this place. Yes, they have a ton of guns to look at and a huge selection, but that's all they're good for! Just looking at, and holding to see if you like how it feels. Go check out Buds, grabagun, or palmetto just to name a few and your jaws will drop at the difference in prices. I really feel sorry for those who continue to buy from here. First experience with Hyatt Guns today. I hit three local gun shops looking to sell a shotgun and purchase a new one. Out of all the shops Hyatt offered me the least amount of money for my used firearm and the prices at this place are just plain outrageous, I mean severely overpriced. If I can purchase a firearm from a shop in Colorado, pay to have it shipped and then pay my FFL for the transfer and still get it cheaper than I could at Hyatt's -there's a problem. I'm giving it two stars because to be fair the staff seem friendly and polite, but I'm not going there to make friends I'm going to buy something at a price I can feel good about and in that realm Hyatt falls very short. read more
