I stopped by the Hyattsville Branch Library to get a new library card. I love the reciprocity with Maryland and DC locations (some Virginia locations, too). There's a small parking garage underneath the library. (The garage closes when the library closes... so no dawdling!) The front desk staff was friendly and helped me get my new library card set-up. She helped to reset my account, gave me a bookmark which also noted the library hours, walked me through the different resources available, and was willing to answer any questions. You can checkout up to 75 items! The library space was new and modern. There was a community event being hosted in the meeting room when I visited. There are so many services and events that the public library offers beyond books - I dare you to check it out. Another beautiful library! The libraries in PG have such a chic and modern look, but they still manage to feel cozy. The second library I've seen with a fireplace and high ceilings. I love the integration of the Spanish language in all the titles of the different areas, and that there is a dedicated space to eat and hang out where you can talk louder etc. The building gets a lot of natural light and there is plenty of parking. You can't go wrong visiting this library. Def proud to be a PG county library card holder! read more

The library re-opened its doors after being closed for what seems like 5 years. The "inept contractor" (this was a direct quote from a senior Prince George's County library administrator before a recent County Council audit of the library system) was the cause of the delays. So, one would think after all that time the new opening would pizazz everyone and even impress the most critical.... The renovated building is less than impressive. The overall floor space appears to be LESS THAN the old building, which had two floors (this new building only has ONE FLOOR). Yes, the renovation has cute things like a plastic tree inside, and other children-centered fluff, but I guess somebody forgot this is not an indoor playground, it's a library. Space used up by all these plastic kid-centric artifacts could have actually been used for more books, periodicals, reference materials, or other educational items. This critical space is now so limited that they didn't even have room to separate books on CD's from standard hardbacks. Periodicals have also been severely reduced. The entire stock of books has actually been REDUCED compared to the old building. The lighting is less than impressive- despite the fancy neon that laces the hanging units; the floors are speckled black and white with fake mica, and very unstylish; the walls and information and check-out areas are unimpressive- I'm not sure who approved the design and quality of all the interior settings, but they need to get their interior style sense totally re-calibrated. Someone said this new library copied the design of the Laurel library- I've never been to the Laurel library, but given what I have seen here, I'm never stepping foot in there. If you want a well-designed library in Prince George's County well-stocked with, well, books, go to New Carrollton or South Bowie. Two stars for poor style, lousy design, too much fluff, and not enough books. Sob. read more

I still feel this branch is nothing fancy, but the librarians in the Children's section are the best! Always pleasant. Always helpful. I'd say that 9/10 of the books I was looking were available at this branch without needed to have them delivered from another branch. There is plenty of free parking and it's not super crowded after school. I haven't used the adult section and I don't know what services they offer, such as computers for Internet access. They have a decent-sized used book store. Some are donated books, and they are super cheap; $0.25 for children's paperbacks. I bought a book about idioms that I was contemplated buying from Barnes and Noble last year - for a quarter! You pay using the honor system, which I hope brings in money for my new favorite library. read more

Hyattsville library is a curiosity shop. The space satellite in front, bookstore at prices you might think you were confused with someone wearing a ski mask, a cavern stocked with movies, and books of such currency that you wouldn't expect in a building so old. A few of the employees could look like they could be characters in an indie movie, but I digress... This library won't win any beauty contests that's for sure, but it does exactly what it's supposed to do in its own charming way... It's authentic. read more

Staff is so friendly ! They've relocated for the time being. You can find them in the America blvd. Near the movie theater. It's always been a great place that's tucked away in the corner. Has a quad and surrounding restaurants for when you get hungry. Recently visited and unfortunately was a witness to a women being robbed by a young man. So please it should go with out being said but please always watch your stuff! read more

It needs a renovation but makes up for it with the amenities. Movies, two sections of books (children and adults), free printing and scanning, and a large periodical database for research and history. Plus a nice staff. Just renovate the first floor and perhaps the outside. Looks like a detention center from the outside (hopefully it didn't used to be one!). read more

At first I was wary of the PG public libraries, thinking they mostly had cheezy books about how to make money, how to braid hair, how to "paint like the masters", romance novels, etc. I also had the perception that they were mostly full of people who were just there to use the internet and who had no real interest in books or study. So different from my experience with public libraries as a child and teen. It took me a few visits to realize how unfair my initial assessment was. One time I just browsed through the (nonfiction) stacks, weaving up and down the aisles, and I was impressed and delighted with the depth and variety of the collection. I've also made use of interlibrary loan, and the librarian was very helpful in helping me get what I needed. The other patrons have been quiet and pleasant when I was there -- but that has not been during peak study times for school kids, so maybe it gets more rambunctious in the afternoon and evening hours. Hyattsville is the branch closest to my home, so I go there most often. What I love about the building is the Jetzons-like structure over the main entrance. The Hyattsville branch won me over to public libraries again. Yes, it's a different experience than I had growing up (when there was no internet!), and I'm still not fully used to the idea that public libraries need security guards. But it's a good neighborhood place to go to expand your horizons, save money (by not purchasing books), and to indulge in a library lover's bliss: reading or studying at a spacious table. read more

When I was in elementary school, my dad would bring me to this library on a weekly basis for books and movies. Then I got older and it wasn't cool to be seen with your nose in a book so I stopped going. Then I got a lot older and Amazon Prime came along, eliminating the need for me to ever leave my house for books. Except I recently realized I was spending a lot of money on books I liked but didn't necessarily feel the need to ever read again. It was time to be friends with the Hyattsville library again! I wasn't expecting much in comparison to the MoCo libraries I frequented in college but it's the closest branch to me and it's conveniently close to Five Guys. What, you don't do Books & Burgers night?? Everyone likes the futuristic main entrance but the interior could use some remodeling, particularly the restroom. More outlets are in order due to all the patrons with laptops, phones, and ipads that need charging while they're working or studying. Definitely bring a laptop if you need to work because you might be waiting a while for a library computer, especially if you arrive after the Northwestern students are out. The good news is that the adult book selection is pretty good, including the new books. Of course, if a book is popular you'll have to request it if you want to read it anytime in the near future. For example, when I requested The Goldfinch I believe I was 47th in the queue for it and I got it around 4-6 weeks after submitting my request. But in general, using the inter library loan is fast and books arrive in Hyattsville within the week. A lot of times, I want to be in and out of the library so I request a book online that I know is on the shelf so I can just pick it up. I also do that because a couple of times the online catalog said a book was on the shelf but when I went, someone had beaten me :(. My favorite part is the self checkout computer. I wish they had more than one but luckily there's rarely a line for some odd reason. The check out staff is usually nice anyway except for one foreign lady who always seems grumpy. The librarians are helpful as well. Don't hesitate to talk to them if you need help! read more

The UFO in the front beckons unsuspecting passerby into its air-conditioned, not-exactly-clean-but-what-are-you-expecting, a palace? This is Hyattsville, not a palace-interior, and the people who enter are never the same again. Hyattsville library is my favorite place in Hyattsville. Amazing selection of DVDs and CDs in the basement and graphic novels on the first floor, plus a super-helpful and lenient-about-fees staff. They have events here, like movie nights I think? And maybe a historical room? Anyway, this place rocks. My favorite PG library! #1 fan of Hyattsville Lib Fan Club! read more

As an out of towner I still felt welcomed at this branch. I needed to duck in and look up some information. The provided computer access without requiring and ID and I was able to browse the books in hand. Thanks for a pleasant experience. Not sure when the next time I'll be through, but I certainly know this is a decent place to stop were I to need computer access or reference materials on the fly. read more

The librarians go out of their way to help you find the book concerning your subject matter. However, The support staff (non-librarians) are really hard working and get very little constructive support from management. Overall, it's a wonderful facility, that opens its doors to learning, providing the space and some of the resources for people in the community. In the 6 years I've been going to Hyattsville, I've only had one negative encounter with a rude librarian. read more

I am posting a review on the Hyattsville, Maryland Library branch that is currently at 6502 America blvd (across from a Regency theater and near both a Target and Prince Georges plaza mall and PG metro station). Anyhow, I admit to discovering the new location of this library on my way to doing grocery shopping at Giant. I decided to take a look inside and inquire about the library card requirements when I was fortunately helped and given important details on the lengths of time for their items such as the books and dvds. I was helped out by two different guys during my visit. One of the workers helped get me a free library card and worked to help make sure that I was aware of the length of time and number of times allowed for books that are being expected by others and those where there is not a wait period. I saw a good selection of books and dvds inside this library. I myself checked out the following three books during this visit; Walking Washington D.C. by Barbara J. Saffir, Tips and Traps When Buying a Home by Robert Irwin, and Dark Money by Jane Meyer. Another employee noticed when I was waiting in line to check out the books and helpfully showed me how to use their self-checkout system. read more

Its not like most libraries Im used to. I can only critique on this libraries study environment. It only had a few computers for people to use. I actually went to study for my upcoming medical licensing exam, and brought my own laptop. They had a quite room, which was nice. Other people in the room seem to respect the quiet rule. It had about 10 of your old school wooden tables and a couple of power strips for you to plug in to....literally 2, one for each side of the room. The outlets were old and rusty...when I plugged my macbook charger it actually sparked in the outlet. I decided to leave it unplugged and left when the battery ran out on my laptop. The wifi connection wasn't bad, I never had a problem connecting...just laggy. It wasn't the cleanest of libraries. The room was extremely warm compared to the temperature in the rest of the library. Its not a bad place to study. At least its quieter than Starbucks and the internet is actually faster. read more

Like Lorena B, thought this the place to learn since the year it first opened. The "spaceship" entrance put wonderment in my head of futuristic events. It was a relief to see that the "War of the Worlds", Orsen Wells radio scare wasn't real; nor was "The Day the Earth Stood Still" picture representing Washington, DC as possibly doomed by alien attack wasn't real. I could enter here for KNOWLEDGE. I've recently "come full circle" and moved back to the area. I've used this library again and have found, true to form, the librarians and staff most helpful. (And a lot of these helpful people are in my age bracket!) I learned that the entrance to this library is about to be revitalized with a totally new look.
