I think the combination of these two things made for a great visit, because I felt like I learned a lot which made my experience more enjoyable. The museum is extensive, and even had a small section devoted to his little dog. There is rather sizable section for Eleanor as well, and a lovely statue of them both sitting on a park bench on the grounds. It was an excellent way to spend a rainy afternoon in the area!

The museum building and grounds were very well-maintained, and the exhibition signage looked recently updated. It was a great way to learn all about FDR the president as well as the man, and all his accomplishments as well as failures. I was glad to see that there was also a lot about his wife, Eleanor, who lived for many decades after his death and influenced the world greatly in her own right. On the day of our visit they had free admission to the Roosevelt House Museum, so we took advantage of that as well. Overall we had a great time and learned a lot--a worthwhile stop.

I have to say that the Elting Memorial Library, New Paltz's town library, is perhaps the best library we've visited in New York to date! The building looks unassuming from the outside, with the dainty white exterior blending perfectly into the quaint downtown setting that would fit seamlessly into a set for a community theatre production of "The Music Man". But step inside, and you'll find shelves upon shelves of a vast selection of fiction and nonfiction, plus ample seating on cozy chairs and couches to curl up and read the day away! The folks that work at this library are some of the friendliest we've met in all our journeys, and be sure to snap a picture with the moose mascot before you leave! The finally renovation was in 2005 when the existing structure was nearly doubled in size and thoroughly modernized. The library is interesting because of the art that decorates the walls and shelves. Some very cool sculptures of Viking type guys, complete with the traditional two handed axes, are hard to miss. They was also a display of strange masks while we were there and two lovely and old grandfather clocks and the ubiquitous library quilt. The library also has a nice local history and genealogy room and lots of programs and events for both adults and kids. Starr is a unique library that is not only functional but great fun to look at even without the books.

I normally visit my library in Hyde Park, but they did not have 2 books I wanted to read. Thanks to the Mid-Hudson Library System (Love the Mid-Hudson Library System!), I found both were available at Starr, which was not inconvenient for me as I was going to be in the area that day anyway. The library has a great layout, a nice selection, and it was quite busy even on what you might consider a slow day. They were setting up for an evening community activity too, which shows more community involvement. Besides finding the books, I also browsed their magazine selection. It was smaller than the one for Hyde Park, but it was a nice complement, as it carried a number of magazines not in Hyde Park but which also interested me. I will probably have to visit both now regularly to get my magazine fill. The one very minor qualm I had was that for one of the books I wanted, the Mid-Hudson Library System database listed a Dewey Decimal value for a book with numbers to the right of the decimal point, and the actual book in this library did not include the numbers to the right of the decimal on its label and was sorted thus. That required maybe an extra minute to find the book. That's hardly an issue, though it may mean a little bit extra work for you or a library staff to find a book occasionally.

Not only is this library located in a run-down, high-crime part of town, but their patron pool mainly consists of locals, so you will routinely encounter unpleasant incidents or loud outbursts whilst trying to read or study. The computers here are occupied by the same seedy bunch, who often attempt to get "friendly" with women who are simply trying to get some work done. Since the staff is located in another room, that leaves unaccompanied women to fend for themselves in the computer room. I can only hope that their children's section is more supervised and safer. This subpar library offers the occasional book discussion or movie, but the themes lean heavily toward LGBTQ and immigrant's rights, so that leaves little, if anything, for the general population. Their new management seems to like it this way. I recommend you either do your reading at home, or visit the nearby Ulster Library instead - which is cleaner, safer, and much more pleasant.

I was very confused and unhappy. But I put in the new location into my GPS and to my delightI found the new library. Although I was still disappointed because there were no private quiet rooms, I could go into and work on my online business and homework.

We always make a…read morepoint to visit the local library whenever we travel, and Howland is no exception to many of the wonderful libraries we've visited in the greater New York area! The library is a bit smaller than some of the others (then again, we're spoiled by the vastness of the Mahopac Public Library), but doesn't skimp on book selection and friendliness of the staff. This is also an excellent place to visit with children - their youth section is robust and it always seems like there's some fun programming for kids going on whenever we visit. The Howland Public Library is a definite asset to the Beacon community, and a must-visit to add to your list when you're in town!
