I attended this school some years ago, and it was, and still is, a joke. Will you get a better education here than in public schools? Maybe in regards to math. But will your child leave here better off and prepared for the life ahead of them? No chance. The school is a sheltered island that practices borderline cult-esque ideals of religion and tries to indoctrinate students with a perspective of 'how the world should be' but completely fails to prepare them for how the world actually is. For all the heavily religious people out there, consider this. Roughly half of the students I know who attended Hyde Park no longer believe in God and directly point to this school as one of the primary reasons. I've never been religious but if I was that would be a horrifying statistic to me. And for those who are not religious, this isn't because the school promotes open minded thinking but rather is so far down the evangelical black hole that it ruins religion for most. Oh and if you actually care about the education aspect (which most parents at this school do not and are primarily focused on religion), check where their graduates go to college. The majority of them go to small, relatively obscure colleges because the school is not focused on education, but primarily religion. Students who attend a private school and pay for an elite education should not be struggling to get into Texas A&M if they're just outside of the automatic admit percentile. Yikes. Since Chris Coy has taken over, this school has zero stability. The turnover on principals, assistant principals, and teachers is out the roof. They cannot keep teachers on board and they are hiring teachers who are providing poor quality instruction. AP passing rates are terrible. They have continuously increased tuition while creating bogus positions at the school and investing nothing in providing high quality teaching and trying to improve AP passing rates. There are minimal dual credit options for the students. Tuition gets increased and there's zero transparency about it; you find out about the increases when you renew your student's spot at the school. By that time, it's too late to switch schools. Everybody is at a director level position. We now have an Athletic Director for the upper school, an AD for the lower school, and two assistant ADs...for a school this small. Wasted tuition funds paid by parents to fund unnecessary positions, many of which are being filled by unqualified people. There has also been a huge turnover with the coaching staff across multiple sports. They've hired on Phil Dawson as the head football coach. His wife and son are also paid hires at the school. His son is a college kid contributing very little, but on the payroll. His wife, Shannon, is unqualified for the position she was given. Her work history is being a backup singer and writing devotionals. She's now being paid to hold the Director of Athletic Advancement role, and they've even given her an assistant, both of whom are basically doing team mom roles but now getting paid for it. Shannon leads a bible study for women at that school, but she is one of the rudest and nastiest women you will ever meet. Her assistant has talked terrible about kids playing on the lacrosse team. Incredibly negative and rude about other people's kids...even a kid who had signed to play D1 sports. The Dawson clan has come on board and they are cleaning house to create what they want at that school. Total chaos, negativity, and selfish motivations. They fired the softball coach for no reason, the girls basketball coach quit with no notice, and the football staff turnover and boys basketball staff turnover is up. They fired one football/conditioning coach for drug possession and sent out a lengthy note to parents about zero tolerance. A few months later, he was walking the halls again, coaching, and teaching a conditioning class for all athletes in all sports. Zero communication by our so-called Head of School to explain how they went from "he's fired, zero tolerance" to he's back on board in a full time position with direct contact with the students. They removed the Athletic Director and put him into a made up role of Culture and Connection and handed over the reigns to Dawson as the new AD. A second director role for Culture and Connection was also created. The CFO was replaced with someone else before she was even told she was being fired. It's just a disgrace. The Christian curriculum is subpar. There is no focus on how to live in the world but not be of the world. They have gotten so caught up in building a business...they accept troubled kids who have filled that school full of drugs. I am all about accepting trouble kids but it has to be within the means of the school being able to manage, but there is no plan on how to guide these kids once they accept them. They bring them in with no oversight or plan on how to get them back on track...it's just about getting that tuition check. The ones who are relatively on the straight and narrow get pulled into the drugs and poor choices. There are a few excellent staff at that school, but that number has dwindled to hardly any over the past few years. I have never seen such a poorly run institution. Poor leadership and decision-making causes such chaos. At this point, it's all about the money. I pray they regain a focus on investing in the souls of their students and families and that their actions begin to reflect the Word of God. read more

We transferred from Westlake HS for a program with a high degree of attention from teachers and administration as well as more student accountability. Different students have different needs, and this was the right fit. Worth the investment! read more

The education is subpar. I am not sure they know the actual message of Jesus. They do not live it out in how they treat people. They are expensive and then ask for more money for everything, like an airline might. I think it is clear that my experience at this "Christian" institution was not pleasant. I would not recommend it to anyone. We moved away from Austin and found a wonderful Christian school for a third of the price, the same amenities and with leadership teaching the love grace and mercy message of Jesus. read more

This review is for Speedway campus (not high school). I have 2 children that are currently here and unfortunately this school is not working out for us and we cannot wait to be out of here this Friday. I heard so many good things about this place and I even had 2 co-workers spoke so highly of this school. When I enrolled my children, I was so excited and to be honest had a high hope and it was wonderful for a good period of time. However as time goes by it's clear to me that they wanted 'easy to teach' children and parents that will never question and reason with the management (I negotiate at work everyday so I'd like to ask for justification- and that didn't sit well with them). Easy to teach children is the key point. In order to maintain their supposedly 99-100% college acceptance, they have to do that. Your children is their business. My children are not genius, but they are not dumb either. They are not perfect and they had their little struggle and I was a student once, I know exactly what is all about. Isn't that the point we send children to school? To be educated by so called 'experts'? Seeing I paid close to 20k upfront (yeah I'm not a charity case just in case you think I'm one of those bitter parents because I cannot afford it), I expected something great but alas I felt that I'm being ripped off. My children are not good enough for the Director of Academic Program-Mrs.Suhr and God who else. She said their school is not equipped to have children that need extra support. They have no resource and are not experienced--those are her words. Pay close attention about 'not experienced'. That's enough to make me wonder, how as a professional who is able to send my children to private school, had lived in 3 different countries, I can be fooled. My children went through assessment with the same Mrs.Suhr during enrollment process mind you, and I told the Principal what they were lacking during the parents interview, but I guess they just see a dollar sign that day and accepted my children knowing that they don't have the resource to fill what's lacking and just expect us parents to fix it. The irony though, just months ago the principal, Mrs.Eclarinal gave this beautiful speech about letting the children fail to help them to be resilient (and learn from their mistakes) and to let the children learn on their PACE. PACE! I guess they don't do what they preached. My children are pressured over nothing. I took them to another private school and had them do half day shadowing and sure enough the teachers over at the new private school were delighted with them and my children were disappointed having to go back to HP the next day. My advice is to do your homework very carefully. If you are hoping for a school that could give your children extra support as needed, just forget it. This school will move on with or without you unless maybe you are a big donor during their Cinco De mayo fundraising. Just because other parents are happy and raved about it, doesn't mean you will too. Be prepare to be bombarded with emails from the Director of Academic Program if your children are viewed as a business risk (because remember their reputation is more important than your children's well-being). She even sent me to see a kids counselor that charged $125 an hour (the counselor was very lovely though and told me that my kids are just being kids, MEANING they are fine!!!). Read reviews at niche.com and glassdoor (the most accurate reviews I've seen, came from both students, teachers and parents), you'll see I'm not the only one. I added one at Yelp since nobody else bother to write beside the other 2 reviewers. This place is on the decline, their cost is rising but yet teachers turnover is high. The more experienced teachers are leaving and being replaced by fresh graduates (less experience = cheaper). Some classrooms still have that forest green icky carpet from the 70s while their business office has brand new carpet and newly painted. I wonder where did the money go??!! Last piece of advice if you must join HP, buy their release plan. There is nothing worse than handing out your hard working $$$$ and find out down the line that you are not happy and cannot get out because the money is theirs to keep. I'm giving stars because my children will miss their friends and their lovely families that are like treasure to me and of course their lovely teachers (by the way their main teacher pressed hard to get some extra resources in order to better teach all of the children, mine included and the management blatantly said NO to her). 0 for the school itself. What a waste of a year of tuition. This school is more concerned about your money than anything else. The vaping problem on this campus is astounding and the staff just look the other way. If your child comes from a wealthy family they should fit right in, and can do what they want. Even my son said he was glad he is no longer going there. He saw more drugs and bad behavior there than he does at public school. Don't waste your money with this private school. Unless you want your child exposed to vaping in the bathrooms then go for it. They will nickel and dime you for everything on top of the high tuition. read more

I have worked for Hyde Park High School for 20 years, and both of my sons graduated from there. I feel that it is a first-rate, high quality high school and was very satisfied with my sons' education. The reason that we choose the school in the first place was that it was a Christian school that offered a variety of excellent courses, including AP courses and electives like computer science. Providing a high-quality Christian education for our sons was important to us. As a bonus, there were many opportunities for extra-curricular activities. Both sons went on to UT-Austin, where they had very successful freshman years. After my children had been at Hyde Park for a year, I realized my life would be less complicated if I worked at the same place where my children went to school and applied there. That was many years ago, and I have been working there ever since. Having seen the school as both a parent and an employee gives me a unique perspective. I feel that the school does an excellent job of servicing its students. The class sizes are small, allowing teachers to provide more attention to each student. Academic standards are kept high, but when a student struggles, the administration puts plans into effect to help them. The current superintendent and high school administration are the best that I have worked under. They are consistent, reliable, and provide good support to students and teachers. The teachers that I currently work with are enthusiastic and passionate and know their subjects well. The students in general are hard-working and cooperative. There have been some ups and downs over the twenty years that I have worked here, but through it all, Hyde Park has continued to provide a quality Christian education. The present situation is definitely an "up", with good leadership and teachers who strive hard to help their students learn rigorous subjects. read more

I believe the education provided at HP is much better than what would be received via a public school, but I also believe that on the 'Christian' side , the school is lacking. I'm a devout Christian, and find the belief in abortion to be contradictory to being a Christian (how can one claim to be a Christian, and profess belief in an immortal soul, and at the same time feel justified in the destruction of anothers immortal soul?). Recently, I was having a conversation with my niece (who graduated last year after 12 years at HP), and the topic of abortion came up, and when I asked for her opinion, I was flabbergasted when she said she had not made up her mind. Talking to her further about Hyde Park, gave me further pause. She made is sound as if faculty was more synonymous with a liberal college, than a Christian high school. How can a school be committed to spreading Christian values, and not broach the subject of abortion with a student in 12 years? I'm guessing that it's more about not wanting to bring up a subject that might offend someone, and risk losing tuition monies! I believe that part of being a Christian is standing up for what is right, regardless of the consequences, I wish the school would act the same. So, while I believe the quality of education at Hyde Park is very high, I also think that if you are looking for an education with a Christian background, you probably want to continue looking. read more

We couldn't be more satisfied with our daughter's choice to attend Hyde Park High School. We are zoned for Vandegrift, which is a very reputable public school, but when given the choice she opted for a Christian education with smaller classes and the ability to be involved in multi sports and a variety of extracurricular activities. She truly loves high school, her teachers, coaches and friends and says "I've come out of my shell". She's always been a very happy child, but she is truly balanced; challenged academically while in multiple sports and still home for dinner and in bed by 10. Hyde Park is all that we hoped it would be and look forward to our other two children attending. As parents we have found nothing but wonderful families at HP, never once feeling as an outsider while being new to the HP family. read more

Disclaimer...I do not have children at HP, but have two friends that do. Both friends can not speak more highly of their kids' experience at HP. They've used words and terms like thriving, life-changing, wonderful and more than they could have imagined. My wife and I went to an admissions preview last night and were impressed with just about everything we saw. We were especially encouraged by the open-mindedness the teachers displayed when discussing Christianity. The kids are encouraged to think logically (and for themselves) and be able to defend whatever position they adopt. The graduation class is around 90 kids (as opposed to 700 at the local district school), which is almost reason enough to send my kids there. Nearly 25% of last-year's graduation class were accepted to UT-Austin. The expectation is that everyone will go to college, so it's not a matter of if, but where. Many kids who have transferred from larger schools have been able to participate in multiple school activities and sports as there is no pressure to specialize in one activity and the smaller class sizes make trying new things less intimidating. There is no getting lost in the shuffle, no feelings of not feeling wanted or that one doesn't belong and not nearly the same cliques and social peer-pressures as elsewhere. Now the big question is how do I pay for it. It's approx 15k per year for high school; not an insignificant amount. Actually, though, that number is lower than some other private schools in Austin -- St. Stephens is 23k annually, for example. In short, after leaving the event my wife and I both agreed that it made us want to go back to high school...and this time do it right. :) read more

I have been an educator for 32 years. I am currently an employee of HYDE PARK HIGH SCHOOL and I am in love with this place. I worked as a teacher, coach and assistant principal in large public high schools in the state of Texas and have now moved on to this private school. Hyde Park is unique in that it educates the whole child, has high academic standards, and has a mission beyond just teaching knowledge and skills. It is a mission to bring Christ to students, the community, and the larger world. It is showing love and care for all students. When we fall short, there is a culture of honesty and continuous improvement to address them. No school is perfect, but in my experience HYDE PARK has been like "school heaven" for me. Imagine a place where there is a real chance to try new things, discipline problems are few and handled with firmness, prayer and love, and there is a real emphasis on improving student outcomes through high expectations. Students at HYDE PARK can compete in many school activities including fine arts, athletics, robotics, foreign language, etc. HYDE PARK is big enough for these activities and yet small enough so no student slips through the cracks which often happens in larger schools. Finally, HYDE PARK is a community where many things occur around the mission of the school. It is a great place to call home. read more
