I just moved back to Astoria after several years away and was looking to find my new go-to stylist. Hygge will definitely not be getting my business. I had the most frustrating experience trying to schedule an appointment here. Nobody answered the phone, which is understandable in a small salon, but after leaving a few voicemails over the course of a week (detailed with my name, number, and service requested) I never received a call back. I went on their website where I saw they accept walk-ins- great! So I stopped by one weekday afternoon and saw a big sign on the front door that also indicated walk-ins were welcome. Upon entering the salon, I noticed it was totally dead. This was during peak COVID, and a stylist came out from the back not wearing a mask. I asked if she had time for a walk-in haircut, but she said no. Okay, how about a quick bang trim? Still no, due to COVID restrictions, she said. Well can I book an appointment for now? Still no. I was a bit irritated that I had wasted my time stopping in for a service that was no longer available. I politely suggested that if their policy was to refuse all walk-ins, they should remove the "walk-ins welcome" signage from their website and door. I was rudely told that "COVID will be over soon" so there was no need to update the signage. Uhm, well....it's many months later we're just now seeing restrictions loosened. Her attitude was very dismissive. Also, if you're going to blame COVID for refusing to accommodate new customers, how about you wear a freakin' mask?! Very unwelcoming and unprofessional. read more

Cute new little salon, i.e. two salon chairs, in downtown Astoria. I went for a long hair cut ($35, which seems to be the average around here) and easily booked it online. I had a pretty simple request of long layers and my stylist Elizabeth cut it exactly how I wanted. Plus, it surprisingly styled well when I got home. I liked how she told me what products she was using on me, including a finishing product that I've never heard but liked a lot, but didn't push any products. She was very comfortable to talk to and open to feedback throughout the entire process. Would definitely come back! read more

After a not so great experience the first time I came in I was able to contact the owner and get my cut fixed at no charge! I will say that all the raving and complements towards Liz are greatly true! She took time to make sure my cut was fixed and was focused and knowledgeable. I could hardly wait to get home from the salon to post this review. I've been letting my hair grow for several years because of one horrible hair cutting experience. So needless to say I was terrified to walk into the salon for my first haircut in a while. That's When I met Betsy. She was very Nice and accommodating. She made me an appointment so that I could actually come back today before I talked myself out of it. When I went in for the appointment she sat down with me and I told her what I did want and what I didn't want and by the time she was done cutting my hair.... I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am. No, actually I'm probably even happier than that! The moral to my story is if you want someone that will sit down with you and listen to what you want (and what you don't want,) I highly recommend going to see Betsy. It's always a little scary going to someone new especially for color. Liz is amazing. She listened to my request for a cut that does not require styling...I can now blow dry my hair in 4 minutes and just use my fingers to style it. Love it. Have gotten more compliments on this cut than any haircut in a long time (once you are over 60, haircuts aren't always flattering...this one is). I was struggling with the short hair I've had for a year, after years of long hair. My complaint was that I often (almost always) woke with my hair all cattywampus and had to immediately take a shower and wash it...not my current lifestyle. I don't know what Liz did different, but I can most always simply spritz it a little in the am, or use a tiny bit of styling cream and am fine for facing the world. The color is great too. On top of that the salon is such a great space, with views of ships on the river, bright and airy and clean...and with great coffee to welcome you in. read more
