Good Ethiopian food close to my home. I went in to order since all the apps upchsrge like crazy. I waited maybe 15 minutes for all my food to come out. The Awaze and Lega ribs were pretty good. I ordered the Awaze as beef and Lega as lamb. Both were good but lacked the nuance and extra barber spice that other places produce. They were kind enough to make a couple changes with the veggie platter which I really appreciated. During my stay in Silver Spring, I had the pleasure of enjoying some authentic Ethiopian food from here. I got the veggie plate (which is always a must at any Ethiopian spot) and the lamb merek tibs. The flavors in everything was delicious. I also used some sauce from my friend lamb ribs foe my meal which was spicy and yummyy! definitely recommend. Thank you! Today came for lunch. We we're very hungry and we were excited to come. I cam with my children and my father and the waiter was very impatient. She continued to rush us during our order because she wanted to help another person. Second, we ordered a simple Ethiopian dish called shiro (which every ethiopian restaurant has) and they didn't have it. We also asked for ethiopian injera (because my daughter has a gluten allergy) and they also didn't have that. This experience overall was very frustrating and disappointing. On Uber Eats, I ordered a special Kitfo for $20.99 and a quanta firfir for $16.99 and was astounded by how bad both tasted. I am truly ashamed of how this restaurant represents our country by serving that food. Non-Ethiopians may be pleased with the food because they have no idea what authentic Ethiopian food is, but for someone who has grown up eating Ethiopian food, it was an insult and an embarrassment. It was overjoyed to find this place! I love Ethiopian food but I don't want to drive into D.C. when I want it. We tried this place for my sisters birthday and was not disappointed. She's vegetarian and she's never tried Ethiopia food... She loved it!!! We shared a vegetarian platter and we were both extremely satisfied. I visited the Walia Ibex for the first time last night. It is located in a crowded strip mall with quite a tight parking lot about 1/2 mile from the MD-DC line. There was a large bar about half the length of the narrow dining room with bright colored lamps hanging over it. The contemporary Ethiopian music that was playing was quite loud, but I enjoyed it. There was a large screen above the bar with music visualizations. That atmosphere was more like a bar or club than a restaurant, but it was late on a Saturday night. The restroom was in good working order, very clean and well stocked. The waiter was very friendly and helpful! I ended up ordering my favorite Ethiopian dish, Shiro wat. I have been quite dissatisfied by the shiro I've been getting at any other Ethiopian spot for some time. So I was excited to see they had a separate section on their menu just for Shiro! I actually got bozena shiro. The shiro was absolutely, without question, THE BEST shiro I've had in this city - and I've had a lot. I will absolutely be back soon and often. If the rest of their menu compares at all to the shiro, this will be my new favorite Ethiopian spot in the area - especially since they're open late as well! read more

I've been wanting to try this restaurant for several years. It's location is a little off-putting given it's located in a rather run down strip mall directly across the street from Shoppers. Even so, it's a nice walk, and not too far down New Hampshire from where my daughter's family lives. Even better, the inside of the restaurant is nicely furnished and clean. My wife and I visit TPK periodically to visit family. Fortunately, my son-in-law heard good things about Walia, and is also an adventurous eater. All of the food was fresh and nicely presented in traditional Ethiopian family style on injera. Plenty of extra injera was provided during our meal. The spiced (hot) cooked beef and lamb dishes were exceptional, as was the Gora Gora, marinated raw beef cubes. The service was very good, even though there was a bit of a language barrier. Our order came out exactly right, within a reasonable amount of time. The server could have checked on us a little more frequently, but it was not a problem. I'm concerned that if the restaurant was busier, one server would have been entirely insufficient. My wife was disappointed that all of the chicken dishes were fried. If there is an Ethiopian chicken dish that is not fried, it should be added to the menu. Speaking of menu, it looks like the online menu is seriously out of date. I recall many more dishes on the menu at the restaurant than show up on line. I highly recommend Walia Ethiopian Restaurant. I'd go back for the lentils and Gora Gora alone. read more

Stopped in today for lunch and so glad I did! The food was so delicious! We ordered a mixed combo platter with vegetables, beef tips, and fish. We almost ate the plate that it was served on because it was that good! To top it all off, the service was phenomenal. We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked through the door. What's the best way to find a new restaurant? A. Yelp B. Ask a friend's hairdresser from the country whose cuisine you are seeking C. Both!! Cross-reference!! My friend was visiting from Los Angeles and he requested Ethiopian food for dinner. I gave him the option of a famous Ethiopian place on U Street with lots of positive reviews (strength in numbers) or this place recommended by my friend's Ethiopian hairdresser with less positive reviews (but still very positive). Without a skipping a beat, he said we obviously have to rely on the expertise of the one with experience in her own cuisine. So after I cross-referenced with Yelp to make sure that the reviews of the place were still positive (I know I'm hopeless) we tracked our way to Walia :-) Truth be told I would probably drive by this place a million times with no inkling to ever stop in. Walia is located in a ghost of a strip mall with no big flashy signs, no lures of shops, nothing. The restaurant itself was not bustling but had a steady stream of customers. "Please sit wherever you like" May I complain that the group of four who came in 10 minutes after us decided to sit at the very next table to ours?! The WHOLE restaurant was available and you choose to sit next to me?! Isn't there some kind of space etiquette?!?!?!?! Anyway. . . We ordered a spicy lamb dish, a beef dish and the vegetable combination. I'm sorry that I don't remember the names of these dishes - we were recommended a different beef dish than the one we tried to order. The waitress stated that the beef dish we wanted was not very flavorful. . . Ok you're the expert!! Everything was delicious, flavorful, cooked to tender perfection. . . It was not as spicy as I would have liked but what it lacks in spiciness it makes up for in flavor spice. The portions were very very VERY generous. For those of us who do not have a drinking problem but simply love the taste of good wine or rum or tequila (the list goes on. . .), Walia did not have honey wine for me at this visit. I was sad for a brief moment until the waitress offered another red Ethiopian wine for us. Two words - nom nom!! Again I fail my fellow Yelpers because I did not quite catch the name of the wine. . . Review snobs - "What a horrible review - no real dishes named, no name of delicious wine. Nothing but a recommendation to go to the place!!" Relax. . . One must realize that my taste in food might be different from yours. Perhaps you don't like spicy or do not eat meat. My friend and I tried seven different dishes at this restaurant (the vegetable combination is a sampling of five of their vegetable dishes) and they were all very good. I really wanted to go to Etete, but didn't feel like going all the way into DC, so we ended up at this place instead. It's in a strip mall that's pretty easy to miss, especially because at first glance you see something that looks like a "P", but it's just the name of the restaurant in Amharic, I'm guessing. The place was pretty empty, and quite sparsely decorated. The tables kinda look like they came out of a cafeteria or something. Our waitress seemed annoyed that we only wanted water, but after my last experience with tej at Etete, I think I've had enough of it for the rest of my life. Eventually she came back and got our orders. I got the vegetable combination (you actually get to pick what you get, and I just picked the first 5 things listed on there), and my fiance got the doro wat. I was really surprised as to how long everything took since there was essentially no one in the restaurant, but with my experiences at some Ethiopian places in Atlanta, maybe this is just how things are in most Ethiopian places, I don't know. In any case, my vegetarian entree got out to me much earlier than Charlie's. Mine was pretty good. Some of the stuff was a little bland, and Etete is definitely way better, but it wasn't bad. However, Charlie said that the hotness of the doro wat basially overwhelmed everything else about his dish. The accompanying cottage cheese didn't really help, either, because while it made it slightly less spicy, he couldn't taste anything else about the dish. This is pretty surprising coming from him, considering he's eaten a raw habanero before. So while there wasn't anything expressly bad about this place, I certainly wouldn't go out of my way for it. I love Ethiopian food and Walia is def in my top Fav. List! The Tibs and Kitfo are to die for!!! The food has never disappointed me and I have been going here for several years now! For those of you who are not familiar with Ethiopian food it is very spicy esp. the Doro Wot! It is not a dish for someone who is not prepared for it. : ) Walia is a great family owned restaurant the owners are the sweetest and most welcoming I have met at an Ethio restaurant. 3.5Stars-- Ate at Walia last night and it does compare favorably (taste-wise) to the downtown establishments. We had a vegetarian combination for two though only got five different selections, they just doubled each one for us. Thus those looking for huge vegetarian variety ain't gonna get it here. Strangely they were out(?!) of the tomato,onion,jalapeno salad we enjoy so much as a refreshing addition to the rich, thick purees that are most Ethiopian vegetarian options. As for taste the Mesir Wot was VERY spicy which was a nice surprise. Otherwise my wife who usually doesn't like the collard greens said they were her favorite version yet and the beets were awesome. Different, not in a bad way, but the usual Ethiopian dish of cabbage, carrot, potato was a different version here containing neither cabbage (as per menu description) and hardly any potato (though promised). Also, just an observation not a judgment, the food was more dry (less saucy) than other places we've tried. The injera the food was laid upon then did not get real soggy which some people enjoy as the best part of the meal. Oh, and no sambussa? Waitress suggested we go to the grocery next door if we wanted some "after our meal" Pretty funny. All in all a pleasant experience but I am not in a hurry to go back in light of the many other Ethiopian choices in the area with a much better vegetarian selection of dishes. read more

I've been to a few Ethiopian restaurants within the past year and I've been disappointed. I couldn't pick up the butter they use. I didn't detect much if the red spicy pepper. Well I got it today!! Just enough heat. In fact I could handle more but I understand they've toned it back at bit for us Americans. LOL. The other places ice been to have seemed to have gone totally Americanized. one of dc's standard ethiopian restaurants, so if you like ethiopian, you'll do just fine here. as with pretty much every other ethiopian restaurant in the dc area, though, they tend to only have about half of the vegetarian menu at any given time and if you double-up on the veggie platter, they'll give you double-orders of the five things they do have instead of a single order of all ten things on the menu... but alas, it's still all good and the fact that they take calls for take-out and are right around the corner from my house puts them a few notches higher in my book. read more

The food and my dining experiences here have been wonderful. The staff is always pleasant and courteous. I haven't found an item on the menu yet that I didn't enjoy. My favorites are gore gore, kitfo and tibs. The Guinness beer (always ice cold and plentiful) goes great with most meals. They also have great coffee. read more

I love and miss this place!!! I recently moved, but when I still lived out that way, me and my roommates were regulars here. I've never been a regular anywhere so it's got a special place in my heart. Everytime we would get the same thing - vegetarian combo. It was so delicious, can't improve on perfection. Done very well. Came here a few nights ago and ordered a poultry dish and the vegetable combo. The meal came out within a reasonable time from when we ordered - the chicken dish consisted of an egg and a drumstick. This was rather difficult to split with another person, so we split it. I went with the egg. The dish itself was tasty and the sauce went very well with that dough they provided. As for the vegetables, there was a good variety there. The combo consisted of collard greens, mashed peas, a tomato-onion side with jalalpenos (beware, I did not notice the jalapenos until i took a bite), beet salad and two other ones. I thought the dishes were prepared well. As for the service, the waitress was attentive and came by our table at the right moments - we never felt rushed or anything. Towards the end of the evening, I believe it was the owner who came by the table to ask how everything was too. The restaurant is located in a seemingly sketchy neighborhood (as my friend stated), but we had a very pleasant experience. read more

This is another great Ethiopian restaurant. I have been here a few times and their Vegetarian combination is delicious. One special thing about it is the beet salad which is great. I have gone with groups as big as 8 or so and it has been perfect. One of my friends as part of a high school newspaper article investigated many Ethiopian restaurants in the area. Last time he ordered the Walia Golden Tibs (sp?) and said it was one of the best if not the best Ethiopian meat he has ever had. The parking lot is not great but other than that no real complaints. If it were closer to where I live it might be my go to Ethiopian place. read more
