Warning: this place is not for everyone. Don't go here on a date, don't go with kids, don't go if you are on a rush and don't go if you feel entitled. This is a very humble establishment that runs on African time but serves really authentic cuisine. Go here solely for the food. Better if you can do a take out order. I had grilled lamb with spinach, jollof rice and sweet plantains. Just amazing. I also did a take out order of Ndolle (goat with some bitter leaf gravy). Loved it. There are too many issues with the restaurant. Outdated ambience, super super slow service, difficulty communicating with the staff which resulted in some extra side dishes I ended up paying for, their website doesn't work, the prices they charged were a bit more than what was on the menu (basically outdated menus) and the list simply goes on. Inspite of all these issues, I would still go there because none of those issues seemed intentional. I didn't see foul play. The manager/owner Patrick and the server/cashier Agbenfa both seemed naive and humble. They tried to make sure I enjoyed the food. I also feel I may have gotten lucky because the food that was served to me was hot. (Not cold or room temp like some of the others mentioned) I went on a Friday night. I would have to try a few more times before judging if the food is consistent. But the two entrees and the three sides I tried were all phenomenal. It also helps if you know what you are getting but I like to try new things especially when I am going to authentic places and I don't mind taking small risks. Oh the portions were huge. When it took 30 mins for the lady to come take my order, I was all set to leave the place and was prepared for a 1star experience as I started reading the reviews. I was in the area on some business and stopped here on the way home. It's on a part of the street where construction is going on nearby, so parking is indeed limited. I stepped inside and there were a couple tables. Nothing fancy at all, and the lighting was somewhat dim. Someone was sitting at a table reading a paper, and someone was in line ordering. There was a lady and a guy behind the register, who occasionally ran to the back to take care of things. Just from that I could tell how everything was being made fresh. It was time for me to place my order, and I got to meet the owner -- very nice! After my order was placed, I waited.... it took quite a while. I had read other reviews beforehand, but I forgot XD. Thankfully, the food was totally worth it -- I got the egusi stew entree with fufu. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I had egusi... and it was delicious!!! It was hot, flavorful, and it was worth it. If I had the time and was by myself, I'd dine in there personally, but it doesn't have the appeal for something like a date. I'd love to see some updates to the interior decor, furniture, menus, the outside... well, everything! I did appreciate seeing a Jamaican flag though! A few years ago, an Uber driver taking me home from the airport recommended this place to me for Cameroonian food and today, I finally tried it for takeout. 5 min after I ordered the roasted whole croaker and the goat, I got a call saying that I could choose a side of plantains, rice, or jollof with my croaker and I opted for jollof. When I got to the restaurant, I only had to wait a few min and my order was ready. The place only had 2 tables available for dining in, understandable for COVID, with photos of Cameroon on the wall and had a homey feeling. The croaker was delicious, seasoned well and tender. I would want to learn this! The sides of spinach and jollof were less memorable, although the spinach was creamy and jollof had nice consistency, both were bland. This was disappointing considering how the rice took up more than half the plate. The goat was cooked well, nice grilled taste, but as other reviewers have noted, $7 for 4 small bites of goat is pricey. I would probably come back for the croaker in the future, and maybe try an egusi stew. read more

I unfortunately have not had the food here but customer service was a big turnoff. I ordered online and the owner said he never received the order (that's fine). What was not okay was he then said that they don't have a Yelp page or a website...and they spoke rudely about me in French not knowing I spoke French while I was on the phone. I let him know the website I used was linked to the Yelp (rogermillerrestaurant.com) and that I was currently staring at his Yelp page. He refused to believe me and said I should come and place another order. I'm not sure who controls their website but they should update the systems. Do not order from the website! It's a scam! This restaurant does not have a web site. Roger Miller restaurant.com is fake. They take your money but don't send the order to the restaurant. The restaurant owner won't do anything about it. Sometimes the food here is great, and sometimes it's gross. There's no consistency, and ordering over the phone off a real challenge. This is my go to spot for African food. I almost always get the goat meat grille. It comes with grilled goat covered in onions and bell peppers that have been sautéed in a tomato based sauce, a lil spinach, and a heaping portion of jollof rice. It hits the spot and does the things. Sometimes I get the chicken wings (spicy) too. The chicken wing portion is small but the flavor is mighty. They come with sautéed onions on top so I like to take the onions and sauce and put them on top of my jollof rice. The plantains are also a nice side to have. I tried the chicken yassa once and wasn't really a fan. Other than that, the food here is good! read more

This was my first time having egusi stew with fufu and it DELIVERED. My partner got this tomato-based stew with super tender and juicy chunks of lamb and cassava with gari fufu, which was also incredible. The food was super flavorful, the fish that came with the egusi stew was meaty and not too bony, the portions were LARGE. Excellent food and the cook is awesome. I had the Egusi with Fish and Cassava Leaf with Beef which was so flavorful and delicious. I also tried Boiled Plantian for the first instead of Fried and it was so damn good. It is a very small restaurant with limited seating, but most customer were picking up phoned in orders. As a Malagasy descendent, it's very difficult to find good Malagache food around the area. A staple of ours is called Ravitoto which ground cassava leaf, seasoned heavily into a stew with a protein of your choice and and served over rice. Roger Miller's Cassava brings me as close to home as possible. The last place in the world I've had it this good is a restaurant called Marianina in the heart of Paris. Highly recommend this dish if you know about Cassava. It's flavorful and a hearty portion. We also ordered the Red Okra Soup and it was PACKED with flavor. Couldn't get enough. Definitely a powerhouse of African cuisine served here. Do yourself a favor and go hard with the menu. You won't regret it. read more

If you read Nick L.'s review that is how I feel. And also from reading the reviews, I think this place has an issue with being consistent. My guess is that the same people are not always doing the cooking. Well said, Nick! I wanted to like this place, I really did and I feel bad writing this review but I must be honest. Years ago my hubby raved about this place but things have changed. I am married to a Cameroonian and have had 'da bomb' West African food. Food that makes you weep, either from the pepper or "pepa" or just because you wish you could have it every day. The jollof rice is bland and despite it's red color taste like white rice, which they were out of. White rice, really? Isn't that standard. The pepper soup was so mild, my kiddos ate some without as much as a sniffle. Chicken, a bit dry. Curry Chicken a bit salty and gloopy sauce and the ndole tasted like it was spoiled. I tried adding heaping tablespoons of the pepper sauce and I think I could have just eaten it by the spoonful because it was not spicy like you would expect. The staff was very distant, seemed like they weren't trained in how to be an effective wait person. They should smile, come to the table and ask if you are ready to place your order, don't get mad when asked about items on the menu, ask if the customer needs anything, etc... One staffer barely spoke english and had to get help to figure out what we needed. My daughter called the other waitress, 'the low talker.' They made no attempt to go above or beyond basic service and even that was lacking. They also aren't well versed in the ingredients of the items and if they are they seem to follow the 'share as little info about the menu as possilbe.' When one waitress accidentally served me jollof rice instead of white rice, she said we don't have white rice. I think she wanted me to just eat the jollof rice and so I said well, can I have fufu and she said, "we have to cook it" and I said okay, I'll wait and then lo and behold here comes my fufu 1 minute later!! She lied because she just simply didn't feel like changing my order. That or she somehow didn't know the fufu was ready. Since I know these dishes are very labor intensive and some take hours to cook, I think that all this stuff tasted like they got it out of the fridge and heated it in the microwave because none of it came out piping hot. And finally the waitress had no change, only 5's and 10's thus forcing you to leave a larger tip which was in no way earned. I left to get change and tipped her just over 15% and that was painful because she was not a good waitress but I wanted to at least give the minimum. I was really disappointed in the mediocre food. This is not what West African food should taste like. I know they can find some 'auntie' to come in the kitchen and do it better and do it like 'back home.' Don't know if this place is still owned by an African but whoever owns it, you can do so much better!! P.S. $2.50 for a can of Sprite is highway robbery!! Owner is argumentative. I ordered through Uber eats and they forgot part of my order. Owner was argumentative and I could hear him saying " people think we are small boys" and wouldn't listen to anything I said, and at a point started laughing at me. Mind you we used to go there years ago until we ordered shrimp spinach and was given rotten spinach. Years later, I decided to give them an opportunity to redeem themselves and they failed. It has been too many years since we've been here. We happened to be in Silver Spring, Md and were really hungry. Roger Miller restaurant did not disappoint. We chose to eat outside as it was a cool evening. We did need to move inside when it started to rain. The inside is small and simple but clean. I had the peanut stew with goat and Yam Fufu. The meat was tender and flavorful, the sauce was wonderful, with layers of flavor. I had not had Fufu before and really liked it. It is meant to be used as a starch, with the texture being somewhere between mashed potatoes and steamed bread. The flavor is very mild. It is meant to be used to sop up the sauce and meat using your hands. I used a knife and fork, there was a lot of sauce! My husband got the curry with lamb. Again, the meat was really tender and the curry sauce was amazing. It was a very different flavor than Indian curry utilizing African spices, and was definitely on the spicy side. It was served with Jollof rice which has tomatoes, onions and spices, blended beautifully to impart terrific flavor without being spicy. It was a great complement to the curry. Wow! It is RARE for me to give an African restaurant one star - as I am fiercely supportive of my people. But Roger Miller has earned it. I ordered the Egusi Soup with Beef and Pounded Yam fufu. The ONLY edible item was the beef. Egusi Soup (at least, the way most Nigerians prepare it) is supposed to be a HEARTY, RICH soup. Deep orange and green in color, moistened just right with palm or vegetable oil, and seasoned perfectly. This is NOT what Roger Miller prepared. Their egusi soup tasted RAW - RAW! - like it hadn't spent more than 5 minutes over heat. There was no oil at all. The pounded yam was a lumpy mess. Look, even when using yam flour, you CAN still get the soft, stretchy consistency of pounded yam - just use the right mixing technique! But apparently, not at Roger Miller. I can't speak for other items on their menu. But based on their TERRIBLE reproduction of this CLASSIC Nigerian dish, I shall not be patronizing Roger Miller again. Ever! This restaurant basically stole my money. I went in because I had purchased a Groupon. The way a Groupon works for the restaurant is that after a customer purchases a Groupon, Groupon forwards the proceeds (less their cut) to the restaurant within a few days, so the restaurant gets their money up front. Then it's up to the restaurant to honor the voucher. In this case, there were signs on the menu that said Groupons were not accepted. But the Groupon I had was still valid. They have their money from my groupon, but have elected to not honor the certificate. Of course since Groupon has already forwarded the sales proceeds to the restaurant, Groupon won't refund the amount. The server and manager were very rude about it and said it was Groupon's fault -- but I have used plenty of Groupons without any issues. They did not apologize nor offer any other option. At any rate, if they have a problem with Groupon, that's something that they should take up with Groupon rather than stealing money from potential customers. read more

This place is the worst! I'd been here years ago and couldn't remember why I never came back. The food is awful and very suspect. I just paid over $30 and I threw away most of it. The menu says the egusi soup comes with rice or fufu AND a vegetable. Well that is not accurate, it only comes with rice or fufu. I got pepper soup and egusi with goat meat. There were about 3 small pieces of meat in each of these dishes. Not worth the up charge. The egusi smelled off and sour just like others had mentioned. I sniffed it and tossed it! So far I have had the spinach delight 3x with yam fufu and the veggie platter 1x. Great food. The spinach delight is satisfying filling and light on the stomach. I felt strong after my meal. I am vegan for the most part (I eat meat occasionally) but if you are vegan looking for vegan African food this place has more options then damn near every other African restaurant I've seen in the area. Boyfriend introduced me to African food, and I'm still pretty new to it, so when I found this well reviewed place, of course we had to try it! The place itself was pretty small - tables did feel a little bit cramped but still kind of homey. We tried the Yassa chicken and the groundnut stew. For the groundnut stew, on the menu it said the choice of beef or chicken, but apparently they were out of beef? And the waitress said goat was an option, so we got goat. Groundnut stew was interesting - it had a earthy/nutty flavor of course and the lamb was pretty tender. I do wish we got more than 4 pieces of goat, especially because most of the goat was boney and didn't have that much meat. I was also super intrigued at trying fufu just because I had never heard of it before, and why not new foods! Fufu ended up being quite interesting - it wasn't doughy like pita or bread, but texture wise it was kind of like a more solidified mashed potato dough. Very interesting and I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it haha But I might try it again - it just depends on what kind of starch you feel like having. I was thinking that I would like the stew in more of a bowl instead of flat on a plate again, which might help it stay warmer, but dipping the fufu in the stew across the plate wasn't bad either. The Yassa chicken was delish - it was mustard-y and tangy from lemon. The chicken was tender and marinated really well - so flavorful. I absolutely loved the tang. We also got an order of the fried plantains, which is kind of different from most of the plantains that I've had in the way that it was more dry on the outside? Usually the outsidie is more soft and sticky? but this was much more dry. It was still plantains and yummy though. Oh and we love their spicy harissa sauce! You can add it on anything and it is pretty spicy, but a great flavor and spice kick! They look like they have a very extensive menu, so I'd be excited to try their other dishes! read more

My first visit to Roger Miller West African Restaurant dates back to between the years of 2003 to 2005, when I was a student at the Takoma Park campus of Montgomery College. A friend and classmate of mine visited this location but I was disappointed with the taste of the food. I had ordered Attiéké and Fish (are you surprised?) but the way the fish tasted, that home-cooked flavor was just not there. When eating at an African restaurant, especially West African, I expect the food to taste like it was cooked in my mother's kitchen. Here I am, about 9 years later at Roger Miller, meeting up with Chef Dadisi Olutosin, who recently joined the Kitchen Surfing team of Private Chefs in the Washington, DC Metro Area. Chef Dadisi left the corporate world to follow his passion in Soul Fusion cooking. I was truly fascinated with his extensive knowledge in Black History and how true he stays to his cooking style. Chef Dadisi picked our meeting location and I have to say that I wasn't happy because of my past experience there. But he had recently visited Roger Miller and was pleased with the food. So there we were! We arrived and were seated. The weather was perfect for outdoor seating! Servings I took me a while to make my menu choices. Probably because I was still stuffed from eating my Peanut Butter Stew with Smoked Turkey at lunch. Chef Dadisi already knew what he wanted! I went for 2 appetizers: Plaintains and Suya. The waitress confirmed that the Plaintains were ripe and soft, just how I love them. Chef went for the Chicken Wings as an appetizer, then Fried Croacker with Jollof Rice and Steamed Spinach for his entrée. Within 10 minutes, my Plaintains and Suya were served. Now, let me tell you this: Plaintains were more than PERFECT. Spices on Suya were ON POINT. I thought the Suya stick would be longer so I ordered a 2nd one. Just delicious, I loved the caramelized onions, perfect to go with the meat. In no time, Chef Dadisi's entrée arrived. Look at that dish, tingling my tastebuds. The rice was cooked perfectly. The Croacker is Chef Dadisi's fave. I had a taste it for a second, I thought that it came right out of my mom's kitchen! Man, I was trying not to be too greedy but I could have ordered another side of Plaintains. Customer Service Our waitress was very nice. The food was SO GOOD. I asked if the owner was in and he came out to chat with us for a few. Mr. Patrick, very nice guy from Lomé, Togo. He took over Roger Miller in 2010, which explains the marvelous taste of the food compared to back then. He was very appreciative of my comments and satisfaction with our meal. He thanked me and stated: "All thanks and credit is to be given to African women, as they hold it down in the kitchen". You will go far ooo Mr. Patrick (in my African voice)! Did I mention that the prices here are beyond reasonable?! I bought a groupon ($24 for $48 worth of food)for this place and called the restaurant days prior to make sure I can use it, I was told yes. My friends and I arrived I reminded the owner that we spoke on the phone and that he said I'd be able to use the groupon he says yes that is fine. We ordered our food (it was ok, the rice I got was dry so I had to ask for some pepper sauce to liven it up, one of my friends had the fufu she said it was good) and then the bill comes. The owner Pat tells us that he cannot honor the full groupon because he will end up losing money (our bill was $52), had our order come up to $60 then he would have honored it, so instead he will only honor half of it...what??! I ask him why didn't he tell me this on the phone or prior to us ordering. Then he says he will allow us to come back to use the other half, I told him I will not be returning so he can keep it because that's not what I spent my money on. Then he gets irate and says this is a small business and he cannot afford to lose money. I told him I will be filing an complaint with him to groupon and left. Come to find out he does this a lot to customers who uses groupons he almost never wants to accept them if he doesn't feel like they spent an amount that's up to his standards. There are many California things I miss. The beach. In-N-Out. Good Mexican food that isn't Tex-Mex. But one thing that the DC area has that I hadn't seen in California is numerous African restaurants. I found a Roger Miller Groupon and bought it for a Friday night date night with the wifey. Our idea of a good date is trying new food, and this was basically a new continent for us. It was a sunny Friday evening and we arrived at about 5:30 and asked to be seated outside. After perusing the menu, we settled on a bowl of goat pepper soup, the roasted chicken plate, the roasted croaker, and a deluxe salad. Lacy chose a ginger beer, and I chose a childhood favorite, passionfruit-orange-guava juice. Top Dog - Goat pepper soup, roasted chicken - the soup was so full of wonderful spicy pepper richness, and the goat just added a savory thickness to it. We tried looking up a recipe when we got home, but couldn't find anything that resembled this. Excellent find. And the roasted chicken was a tad crispy on the outside, but a good crispy, and savory and juicy on the inside, with roasted peppers and a light sauce drizzled over it. Delicious. Contendor - POG juice, ginger beer - we both just loved out beverages - a great, crisp ginger beer, and Best. Juice. Ever. Surprising - Roasted Croaker - the croaker just took a long time to eat because it is a whole fish with all the bones, but it is clawing at Top Dog position. It is well documented on Yelp that I prefer shellfish to cuts of fish, but this was just the home cooked 'rely on the fish flavors instead of the garnishes' dish. I enjoyed it very much for fish. Disappointing - Plantains, deluxe salad - First of all, my wife said the plantains were interesting, but she didn't eat all of them. You could take that and say that she didn't like them, or that she did, since she is a light eater and she also ate half of a chicken. But my take on the plantains? They can't decide if they want to be bananas or potatoes, and so they just don't fit. They're like thick, soggy, tangy potato chips. Not for me. We definitely enjoyed sitting at the table out front, eating in the sun, watching people on the street. The staff was a little shy, meaning they moistly stayed in the restaurant when we were outside, but the owner did come talk to us for a while. Pretty good but not overly impressed. I ordered the groundnut chicken stew with jollof rice and it came with a spoon of spinach. The sauce was delicious but the chicken tasted not so great. The chicken didn't have flavor. The jollof was yummy. The pepper sauce was hotter than what I'm used to but good. My friend had the rotisserie chicken entree. She said it was mostly bone but the pieces of chicken she was able to eat was good. Service could have been better. My mouth was lit on fire from the pepper sauce but the waitress never came around for a refill. I came here with a groupon. SOO GOOD! Delish! I'm from Richmond and I went here last summer for a weekend trip with friends and I have been dreaming of it ever since. The service leaves much to be desired... It's slowwww as can be. They ran out of a lot of meats (like goat and beef, lol) the night I went, but I was so happy with my meal I couldn't complain. It is cramped. If you don't like a hole-in-the-wall, do take-out and order wayyyy ahead lol. As far as the food, this place was pure perfection. What was lacking in decor was made up for 100 times over in the quality of the food. It was packed with flavor and I highly recommend. You might want to avoid waiting too late in the evening, because the goat will likely be gone and maybe even the beef. Regardless, whatever you get WILL be on point. This place is authentic and flavorful. I had the smoked chicken legs, I believe. The chicken was smokey on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside and, of course, packed with flavor. I also had an order of plantains which came with a deliciously delightful spicy dipping sauce. It tasted really garlicky and a little citrus-ey. Very good! The pricing was definitely of the best in the area. Very affordable and you get a generous serving. Support this place so they can keep serving up the best!! And yes, again, service is slow, but it is very well worth it. Just get an appetizer and deal. It's affordable enough that it won't hurt you to get an appetizer. read more

The service was really good , spoke to the owner and he was very friendly and welcoming. First time trying Nigerian food and their jollof rice is good. I think the egusi lacked flavor and also meat was mostly fatty which I didn't like . Overall good read more

I called in my order so that it would be ready by the time I got there because I know they took a long time to cook it I stopped by Popeyes sat in my car ate my Popeyes when I came into Roger Miller's African lady was in there ordering her food I went back out to my car to eat my Popeyes I come back in the African lady got her food and I'm still waiting on my food I feel discriminated against the service sucks they need to do better. read more

One of the hardest things to do when providing comments on restaurants is to write a bad review. Let me explain, I've been in Silver Spring for over 20 years and based on reviews and friends suggestions they always tell me to come here. After reading recent reviews I was convinced that now was the time, but unfortunately I was truly disappointed. I am not sure if other Yelp reviews was just being nice or felt sorry for this establishment, I was not happy with the decor, service and most importantly the food. I ordered the Fish with Okra dish (see my photos), my wife ordered the Shrimp entree and a good friend I've invited ordered the Goat Entree. First, when we arrived it took over 40 minutes to get our entrees to be prepared and I also did not realize that they did not have alcohol license. Once the entrees arrived, what was strange was the plates were cold and the entrees with the Jollof rice or fufu was Luke warm. My okra dish was so slimy with the fish that I did not eat all of it. My wife and my friend said that they were not impressed with their dishes as well. An elderly gentleman came by and asked about our meals and he was aware that we were unsatisfied. I really wanted to complain but did not want to make it a major issue. The bottom line is that I would not come back here unless there was a sign stating new management. read more

We have been to Roger Miller more than a dozen times. But we're done. The food is good, sometimes very, very good, especially the yassa. But the service is abysmal. It's always been bad -- since long before COVID -- but tonight's service was atrocious. More than an HOUR for a carryout order to be ready and then finding things were missing from the order when we finally got home. We can no longer justify taking our business to Roger Miller and will be trying out other West African restaurants. read more
