We absolutely loved the food and service on Valentine's Day. We opted to not do the hibachi grill and sit at a booth instead since we just wanted to chat with each other. We had some of the best sushi and table side hibachi that we have ever had. Our waitress, Savannah, was so sweet and took the time to make wonderful suggestions for my husband and my different levels of spice and "fishiness". I opted for the Mango Dragon Roll - Snow crab, avocado, egg inside mango and topped with ichiban mango sauce and jalepeno. So delicious. The sauces for the hibachi and ginger dressing were flavorful and complimented all of the food really well. My husband had steak and salmon hibachi, and I had scallops and shrimp hibachi. We both thought that everything was cooked to perfection. I also had the onion soup which was heartier and more flavorful than the one at my favorite sushi place in NY. An added moment of special attention and fantastic service was with the discussion and choice of beers. My husband ordered a special edition Laughing Buddha beer in a Buddha shaped bottle that Savannah rinsed out for him to take home. I would give the place five stars, but the menus were so sticky that I pulled out wet wipes after we ordered and the booth we sat in had seen better days and had a large patch which was also sticky. Met my sister in North AL for lunch. We were looking for a hibachi grill. Yelp recommended Ichiban in Sheffield, AL. The outside wasn't much to look at and the inside resembled and old diner. But the staff was friendly and courteous. We were seated immediately for table service. We asked if they had hibachi. We were taken to another room where their were hibachi grills. Restaurant was clean and orderly. Lunch hibachi was reasonably priced. $9.50 for lunch. Choices were common hibachi cuisine. I ordered the hibachi shrimp. The cook was very friendly and engaged in conversation with us. He was definitely trying to work on his English, but super nice. The ginger salad was a very large portion compared to other hibachi restaurants. The fried rice was cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely. The 'yum-yum' sauce was sweeter than others. My shrimp was large with generous teriyaki sauce. Was cooked perfectly and left me wanting more. Veggies were tasty with onions, broccoli, squash, mushrooms and carrots. Veggie portion was a little small. Overall great experience with tasty food. If your near downtown Sheffield give it a try. read more

The shrimp tempura roll was pretty good. I'm not a huge sushi eater but I enjoyed it. We also had the hibachi chicken and steak. My kids love the nabeyaki noodle bowl- literally too much for one person to eat and always yummy . The hibachi is always spot-on as well. We frequently find ourselves craving Ichiban! Probably a 4.5*, but a few niggling issues demoted it for me. I ate dinner here twice while attending a nearby weekend event. The first night I had the udon with assorted ingredients, plus the pork katsu. The udon broth was excellent, but having uncooked white onion rings in the soup was strange. The katsu was fine, and nothing special. Dinner two I had the sushi-sashimi combo that came in one of those wooden boat thingees. Generally fine, but including pieces of surimi (fake crab) as one of the sashimi selections is a definite no-no. Friendly servers that kept my water glass filled. read more

After 24 hours of eating biscuits, this girl was craving rice! My friends live in Florence and they took us to Ichiban their favorite Japanese place in town. Teppanyaki is always fun and Kevin put on a cool show for the kids and adults. He made a volcano with onion and heart-shaped fried rice. We started off with onion soup which had french onions in it. The broth was simple, but had a nice flavor. My scallops were cooked perfectly and I enjoyed the flavors in the fried rice, but it was too salty for me, super heavy on the soy sauce. I really liked the food, but I would tell them to take it easy on the soy sauce. We also had veggie tempura on the side which was good. I walked into this place and was startled at what I saw: everything was clean and neat and nice. It's surroundings have dealt poorly for Ichiban by warding people off, but the fact is quite the opposite. It's one of the nicest Asian restaurants I've eaten in. Oriental decorations embody its inner room, and soft Oriental music is melodically playing overhead...it made me feel like I was in Mulan or Karate Kid. My counterpart and I ate here for lunch, and both ordered from their lunch special which allows you to chose from two columns (A and B). Column A has the main dishes--I ordered General Tso's chicken--and Column B has sushi--I ordered the snow crab roll. The lunch special comes with meso soup and a small salad garnished with a tangy (possibly ginger) Asian dressing. Both were good, but outplayed by the main course that soon followed. Main meat: the general Tso's chicken was pipping hot, which was a plus in my food bank (I've had it arrive cold and it was a turn off). The sauce was a deep brown and tasted like sweet and sour sauce with a spicy kick. Very good. The fried rice was like any other place, but I'd say above average. But I asked for their "shrimp sauce" and the waitress said they called it "spicy mayonnaise". If you take anything away from this review then heed my saying, "ask for their spicy mayonnaise." It was crazy good, especially mixed in with the fried rice. The dish also came with some sort of green beans or peas, not sure, but I wasn't a fan. Sushi: the snow crab was very well wrapped, much better than I've had elsewhere in this area. It came with four good sized pieces and had great taste, not a very fishy taste. It was just a creamy pureed crab meat with avocado. Excellent. My counterpart ordered the tuna roll, which was only tuna. It was very good, but I preferred the snow crab roll. This is the best Asian place in the Shoals, no doubt. Way better sushi than I've had elsewhere. 5 stars for being authenticly awesome and not conforming to Americanized Asian cuisine, great sushi, and helpful, courteous staff. read more

Don't be fooled by the location. It's snuggled on a street filled with greasy diners, mechanic shops, BBQ dumps, and medical centers. Don't be fooled by the clientele. The pickup trucks in the parking lot should not be an indication of the cuisine. For these two reasons, I hesitated to try this place. When I did, I couldn't believe my own tummy. Food: Best Asian cuisine in the Shoals. This is a title which previously belonged to the Rice Box in Florence. Fuggedaboutit. The food here is fresher. Tastier. Atmosphere: Okay, so I still feel like I'm in Sheffield while I'm inside here. I don't mind. They've done their best to add an Asian feel to the place. Service: No complaints here. You will be well taken care of. They have always been friendly and very helpful. Sushi: I am not a sushi eater, so I must defer to my friends, who are. They all agree Ichiban is the best in town. Drinks: Two words. Hot Sake. Price: Very reasonable. I've eaten there twice for dinner with my girlfriend. Both times have been under $20. Hours: It will be tough to find ANY restaurant around here with better hours. 11 to 10 on weekdays (10:30 on Fridays), noon to 10:30 on Saturdays, 11 to 9 on Sundays. I love this place. I've ordered the General Tso's chicken and the Honey Sesame chicken. Both were great. My favorite is the pork gyozas. Super good. read more

If you love sushi, this is your place! If you are looking for a buffet-cattle-trough style place, this is NOT your place. They do have a complete Chinese, Japanese and Thai menu for folks that do not care so much for actual sushi (no hibachi tables). Jackie, the owner/manager, is an awesome sushi chef and an extremely friendly guy. The place is very clean/smoke free and the service here is well above average. More importantly, in my opinion, the sushi here is as good, or better than, any I have had anywhere in the Southeast U.S (to weight that statement a bit, I have had sushi in Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, Lexington, Ft. Newer staff...we ordered 2 Bento Boxes in addition to our sushi! 1 came out early and I asked about the other said it would be out in a minute. Got my 1st order of sushi and still no bento box... girl came to drop off my check prior to me getting my other 2 orders of sushi and still no bento box...told her not to give the the check when I hadn't even gotten all my order.... finally was told they missed my bento box!!!
