The waitress was very friendly and that was really the only thing worth mentioning. The food is average and took a long time to come out. The fried rice was very greasy. The price was higher than the quality of food.

Gyoza bowl

One word: wow! I was very pleased with my experience at Sushi Sumo. After I finished work for the day in Decatur, I wanted to try somewhere local for lunch. This place has been in my bookmarks for a while and wasn't too far from my location, so off I went! They were doing a brisk enough business at around 1 PM. The location is a tiny bit off the beaten path with a couple other nondescript businesses in a small shopping center. Don't be fooled, though -- the food and service was exceptional. Upon entering, I was politely encouraged to sit wherever I'd like. They have a cute outdoor patio but I decided to sit inside as it was chilly out. The interior has a nice, understated, traditionally Japanese restaurant vibe to it. You can see the chef making rolls behind the counter, which is fun. The menu has a large selection of mostly Japanese dishes, but there are a couple of Korean options as well. Embarrassingly, I'm not yet a sushi-eater and I've been desperately missing my usual Korean spot in Huntsville ever since it closed (shout-out to Big Oh's!), and so I couldn't help but decide on their gyoza bowl. This is a bit like a Korean rice bowl, but with gyoza! You can also get the more standard beef, chicken, or veggies. Bowls come with your choice of steamed or fried rice, lettuce, glass noodles, and your protein/entree of choice, along with your sauce(s) of choice, like Korean bbq sauce or spicy mayo. My gyoza bowl was absolutely delicious. The gyoza were crispy, savory, and tender on the inside. The fried rice had the perfect smokiness and texture. The glass noodles were a unique addition for me and I enjoyed their chewy bounciness. Only a small amount of sauce is drizzled on top when the bowl is delivered; the rest is left up to you in a small cup. I like the amount of control this affords you - although I did use all my sauce eventually. The spicy mayo was not particularly spicy (then again, spicy mayo is almost an oxymoron, right? lol), but I did enjoy the nice zing and creaminess it brought. Service was exceptional, too -- very friendly, prompt but not pushy, and attentive. My lunch was, I thought, quite affordable for the portion size and quality, at under $20 for my meal, a Pepsi, and tip. I didn't have any gyoza leftover but there was enough rice and greens left for a small serving to-go if I'd been so inclined. One final last nice feature worth mentioning is that the check can be paid by scanning the QR code on the receipt. This allows for a quicker exit. However, if you're not tech-savvy or don't feel comfy doing so, you can always opt to pay at the counter. Edited/updated before I even posted the final review: brought my parents and husband out to Decatur to see the cranes at Wheeler and I enjoyed this place so much I drug them here to try it only like 2-3 weeks after my first visit. It was just as delightful the second time. My dad, who is traditionally a bit averse to pretty much all varieties of Asian cuisine (idk why - just not much experience with it, I guess) even loved it -- enough that he said he'd return to Decatur just to visit Sushi Sumo again. AMAZINGLY high praise. Honestly, this may just be my favorite Japanese restaurant that I've tried in north Alabama so far. I'm glad work brings me out here enough that I'm sure I'll get to visit again relatively soon.

Alaskan roll. Very tasty, little sweet (maybe ginger type) sauce underneath.

Nice spot. In a rush so l didn't see much of the place. Pleseant outside seating. The Palko Ramen had a good broth, plenty of noods and the fried chicken cutlets were delicious.

Salmon with red and black tobiko

Foood is AMAZING! Service is friendly, fast, and quiet! I cannot say this enough the raw salmon plate with the tobiko is a 100/10! Got the soft shell crab, SO YUMMY and good crunch (I thought the shell would be an issue but it's actually so good). Ramen, BOMB. They never miss. Will always come here for comfort and this is coming from someone who thought they didn't like fish

Spicy miso ramen.

Excellent selection of Japanese and Korean. Love the spicy miso ramen bowl. Great service as always. Typical ambiance.

Reviews caught my attention, but I don't trust most people around here when it comes to sushi, but the fact they cook their ramen broth for several hours caught my attention. The place is cute, it doesn't seem like it from outside but it's nice inside. I'd love to return when it's warmer because the patio was nice. They blanked out part of the drink menu, wine and such, so stick to non alcoholic drinks for now. I got the salmon carpaccio with lychee sauce, omg so good. They did well with the salmon sourced for it. I also got the tonkotsu ramen, and I would give it a 3 out of 5, noodles were good, but broth could have been thicker, egg was a bit cold, and there was only one piece of charshu that was a bit dry, the add-ons were good though. Service was great, and I'm pretty sure the folks running this place are japanese. I wanna return and try the sushi next time.

Beautiful menu with product pictures

Food: We ordered the Lion Roll, the Mexican, the Big Bang and the Scream. All rolls were delicious and were very filling. Service: Service was good as our waitress took care of everything for us and never let our cups get empty. Ambiance: The inside is decorated nicely in Japanese style, but nothing extravagant. It was nice and quaint. The music was strange for a Sushi restaurant but it wasn't bad, just not fitting to the overall style. If you want great sushi, go here... it will not disappoint.

Tonkotsu Ramen

Sushi Sumo is by far our favorite restaurant in Decatur & is our go-to spot for getting lunch or dinner. Everything is delicious. The ramen is absolutely incredible & the portions are big. Their eggs are always tasty & they don't judge you for adding on four or five extras. :) The Korean BBQ bowls with glass noodles are yummy, as are the poke bowls. The fried rice portions are HUGE & have a ton of flavor. There are so many sushi rolls to choose from, for both sushi purists & folks who prefer the fried versions. The menu has photos & descriptions of everything so you know what you're ordering & the staff are knowledgeable. Mr. Li is the nicest human being you'll ever meet & is a true artist when it comes to creating sushi. He makes everything to order at the open bar (often while chatting with customers sitting there) and is always accommodating with special requests. The southern sweet tea is always on point too, which isn't the case at most sushi spots in my experience. The restaurant is always super clean & you can tell they really take pride in their establishment. We love sitting on the patio when the weather permits. The only downside - and I mean the only negative that I can think of when it comes to Sushi Sumo - is the parking lot. They're located along a pretty dangerous section of roadway & pulling in & out can be a little difficult. There's a huge dip at the entrance that is a beast if you're not expecting it. (Totally not reflection on the owners or the restaurant.) Just be careful pulling in & out when you go to get the best sushi & ramen of your life!

Kind of a hole in the wall place - seating is limited, one comfy four top and then a lot of stuff mostly designed for 1-2 people. The booths can hold 4 people, but it will be a tight 4. They will hand you a menu when you come in, but you will order at the counter when you are ready. Water and unsweet tea were self serve and free, they had canned Coke products (no Coke Zero) -- all the dishes were served in togo/disposable containers. Employees were extremely friendly. We ordered a variety of dishes to sample everything; shrimp katsu plate, chicken gyoza, chicken katsu, beef curry rice and tonkotsu Ramen. Prices are reasonable for Huntville - Curry or Ramen dishes are $15, Katsu plates $12, and Kids (Keiki) are $8. Portions were good and food came out quickly. Wife is half Asian and said all the food was food for the most part. She enjoyed her Ramen and my Curry. I was not a fan of the gyoza (might have been it being chicken and not pork) and felt the sear was light. Vegetables in my curry were huge, but that's a nitpick. Both my kids ate their ketsu and rice without complaint; chicken ketsu I stole was moist. Definitely give it a shot!

I'm counting the days to go back for the udon and ramen. I've found one of my favorite spots in Huntsville and it deserves to be packed everyday.

I think what kept me from five-starring Kamado on my previous visits was a little bit of a pet peeve that I had to just get over - traffic management. More of a problem at their Stovehouse location struggles with this more than the Mid-City location (which is larger). The Stovehouse location is tight quarters and seems to do a very healthy take-away business. Unfortunately l, for those who want to dine in, that means people waiting for their take-away orders are hovering in the walkways blocking the ability to refill drinks or even leave. I'm more than happy that Kamado does a healthy business, and the size of their location was probably based on the work opening day, but their food has caught on and gained a following. I still like the back alley Kyoto feel of the Stovehouse location, but we tend to gravitate to MidCity because of their ability to handle our large crew.

The cold soba is great on a warm summer day, but I think their ramen and rice dishes are even better. If you go to Fuku and aren't a picky eater/texture isn't too much of an issue, I strongly, strongly recommend trying their takoyaki (fried octopus balls).
