Beware of Sam's Scams! I must start by admitting that it's…read moremy own fault. I trusted Sam. I called Sam about buying an amplifier (an Onkyo tx-sr875) he had for sale. I specifically requested that he test all HDMI ports and all Speaker outputs. He assured me that the amp was fully functional. Sam and I agreed to meet half way between our two places on Jan 21 , approximately 50 miles each. Sam wanted an extra $25 to make the trip which I thought was fair. I met up with Sam and exchanged $275 in cash for the amp. I neglected to request a bill of sale, I trusted him. Oops. When I hooked up the amp I immediately noticed that the front speakers were exceptionally low on volume. On checking the Speaker level settings I found that the front speakers were set 10db hotter than the surround speakers. This means that at a normal 0db setting you can barely even hear them. Using the Audessy setup with the mic, Audessy couldn't even hear the sound from the front speaker and just errored out. I called Sam and left a message about the amp. No response. Called again 2 days later. You guessed it, no call back. A day later my wife and I both came down with RSV and were sick as dogs for 3 long weeks. Once I felt well enough I called Sam and he answered. I asked why he didn't return my earlier messages, he said he'd been busy. For 3 weeks?? After I described the problem and asked for my money back he said flat out that he wouldn't give me a refund. Long story short, his last offer was to exchange it for another amp (Yamaha RS-V2700) which sells on ebay for about $90 less than the Onkyo. I've decided that the sleep I've lost over this rip-off is not good for my 80 year old health. I'm not going to drive 100 miles to get an inferior amp. I'll bite the bullet and see if someone can repair this one.

Fortunately, I decided to venture down a search into the more local small businesses and came upon this cool old school & quirky shop. I think the gentleman's name was Jim. Older dude that could pass as your nerdy techy friend who's probably collected every tech gadget since the original Tron came out. Told him what I was looking for but I gradually got discouraged as all he was showing me were the bigger style bigger sound units that are common for home systems. But, alas! With a little patience we revealed a new treasure: smaller desk top speakers! Minor speaker mesh stains on the front but super decent with a little TLC. He was super friendly and chill, even making an effort to find parts that could potentially be missing from this set (like compatible power cord). It also came with an amp box that I've got sitting below my desk table, which was a nice surprise (I keep it plugged in for the deeper sounds or just unplugged for more "regular(?)" crispy audio). All that for a really awesome deal; I think it was something like $15-30 or something crazy like that. Good shit, dude! Thank you. If you're looking for small speakers, I probably snagged the last set but I definitely recommend this place for any help with acheiving 2 things at once: reusing/upcycling any sort of old working electronics and supporting a damn good local friendly small business.
