Our family has two members currently residing at Ida Culver House. One is totally independent and the other requires more support. Both are pretty happy with the environment. They both state that they really enjoy the meals and the dining facilities, also the opportunities to socialize with others in a variety of dining options. I am unable to address the costs with any accuracy so I will say I only understand that fees are 'hefty'. But that includes all expenses. The family members support each them with frequent visits and supplement anything they need. At times, the staff is not 100% on the ball and require that we keep check on doctor's orders. It is important to do this since health issues are involved.  There are a variety of activities offered and many residents take advantage of the offerings and state that the choices are outstanding. These activities offer so much, friendships, socialization, enjoyment and much more. The programs are high quality and open to all. So far, the individual apartments are pretty basic. The windows are large and open onto lovely landscaping. Moving in required that each family member had to leave much behind and only bring in a few treasured items to fit into the small apartments. For our family members it is important that we 'supplement' their lives with our support. We do so with love and affection. read more

My father and some friends are currently living at the IDA Culver House, Broadview in Seattle. I have had dinner with them a number of times. Every time I visit the Ida Culver house, I am just so impressed with the quality of the staff. One of the places where the staff has an opportunity to really shine is in the dining room. Every time I am there, I am just so impressed with how the staff handles their roles, how kind and engaging they are with the residents. At the end of pretty much every meal, "someone" seems to always mentions how great the staff is. read more

Covid has become a lame excuse for skimping and demonstrating no creativity towards maintaining quality of life for these poor isolated seniors who have no voice. The choices seemed overwhelming. Over the years I've had experiences with a wide range of retirement communities, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, etc. involving family and friends, so I'd seen both the best and others I wouldn't wish on anyone.  This experience was really helpful, because when Mom could no longer live on her own, I already had an idea about what I wanted for her. We ultimately selected IDA CULVER HOUSE BROADVIEW for its reputation, range of services, location, gorgeous campus, and most importantly, its memory care unit. We couldn't be happier. Here's why I chose them. First, I spoke to a lot of professionals in the field, friends, and colleagues when the (somewhat frantic) search began and was surprised how many had parents or knew friends' parents who lived at ICHB and they all raved about it. That was a great first sign. Second, it's locally owned and operated and is not part of a national franchise, so it feels less corporate and more home-y than other facilities with a wonderful focus on the residents. At the same time, it's an expansive 8-acre campus with a range of living options and is beautifully manicured with gorgeous trees, flowers, paths, both indoor and outdoor seating areas, a beautiful second floor library with big picture windows, and a dining room with beautiful views of the water and mountains. Third, high staff turnover in this business is pretty common. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many staff members have been with ICHB for 10 or 20 years or longer. It's a testament to how the company treats its staff. Personally, it's important that the folks who are looking after my Mom like what they do, care about the residents, and that the relationships she builds will be lasting. This is especially important for those with memory problems. I've spent quite a bit of time interacting with staff over the past five or six months and continue to be impressed by how caring, helpful, and personally invested they all are. Fourth, ICHB is a great choice if you have a parent who wants to find a place to retire and age in place. Three options are available: 100% independent living in studios, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartments; independent living with assisted living services added as needs increase; and memory care. The last thing I wanted for my Mom was to move her into a place only to have to move her elsewhere for memory care when the time came; I wanted more certainty and stability for her. ICHB was a great fit for this reason. When my Mom first moved in, she had a gorgeous, brightly lit studio apartment with a view of Puget Sound and the Olympics with trees right outside her window. Everything was new and clean. It was amazing! There were lots of planned activities, classes, social events, and options for staying busy, making friends, and pursuing hobbies (I receive regular courtesy emails with lists of planned and upcoming offerings). Given her needs at the time, we arranged for her to have assisted living services to provide her the extra help she needed. When her dementia progressed, the Nurse Director helped us transition her into ICHB's memory care unit, called the Terrace. The staff in the Terrace is experienced with Alzheimer's and dementia and know how to provide specialized support to the residents. Her days are filled with activities and she seems happier than ever. I recognize this has been a really long review (hopefully it won't be a tl;dr kind of thing) but I wanted to share this in the event it might be helpful to others who are where I was when our journey began. The thing that has made the most difference to me is the peace of mind I now have knowing that Mom is being well taken care of, is happy, and that if either she or I ever need anything, the staff at ICHB is there for us. read more

WOW...is all I can say! My grandparents moved to Ida Broadview about 2 years ago and the whole family couldn't be happier. The activities, food, and hotel-suite like rooms make this place feel like a resort rather than an assisted living facility. Most importantly, my grandparents haven't felt a loss of independence. Pre-Covid, they were still able to be very independent outside the facility, which greatly improved their transition. Since covid, they've been obviously much more restrictive, but I'm very impressed with how management reacted and handled safety protocols to keep residents safe. Ida is far from my idea of what an assisted living facility would look like, and I would encourage everyone to check it out for their own family. read more

We moved our mother and father to Ida Culver 11 years ago. My father passed away sadly after a year of being there and my mother lived independently until last year. She had a hard adjustment at first, but made friends and enjoyed a place where we thought she could call home as she aged. She was 5 minutes from my brother,son and myself. Although a lovely and comfortable place, there are several misgivings. My mother fell a few times and they called 911...they never called us until she was going into surgery. Last year my mother fell, they called 911 and then again never called us until a nurse from there the next day called to say"I think you should know" It turned out my mother had a broken back and after an 8 hour wait in the ER, she finally was admitted to the hospital. Surgery followed and she was admitted to Ida Culver rehab. After 2 weeks we were informed that they could not care for her and we would have to get 24/7 care for her at the tune of $800 a day IN the rehab center. We finally had a conference with the caretakers including nurses, OT, social worker etc. and in the most insensitive manner with our Mother sitting there, informed us that my Mom could not stay in the independent apartment unless she had 24/7 care. Not only was she paying $7500 to live there, but it would be an additional $800 a day. Ida Culvers website is misleading. They provide assisted living, but if you fall which many elder people do, they literally kick you out, which they did. We since have learned of other families who have dealt with this same policy. We moved our Mother to another facility and she has suffered mentally and emotionally because of the disruption ,loss of friendships, and familiarity. We have learned a lot about continuum care which Ida Culver does not provide. Make sure you do your research before you place a loved one in a facility. read more

My Aunt has lived in this community for about 5-6 years. Before that she lived with my parents. This truly is a community, more than just an elder care facility. Weekly scheduled outings, theme nights, a nice size private library, amongst other events keep things interesting. Most residents have individual apartments, prices are based on the sq. ft. of your apartment and the number of additional services you require. Breakfast and dinner are included, while lunch is extra, many residents still go shopping via the shuttle's scheduled during the week. While I've only tasted the dinner meal, once, it was decent, usually two items are offered and the menu is posted early enough that should a resident not like the offerings they could go out to dinner. For an extra fee residents can pay for guests to eat with them. This place also offers several house-like units set away from the main housing complex, each with their own garage. Parking spots are extra for residents, thankfully my Aunt as long since retired from driving. Staff is always wonderfully friendly and helpful to both residents and visitors. Minus 1 star for the lack of parking for guests. read more

My mother lived at Ida Culver Rehabilitation for over a month and I was with her much of that time. I was very pleased about the care she received there, especially the "care conferences" which included me, the scheduled rehabilitation that she received, and the follow up calls that were made. The staff handled themselves very professionally and seemed to be attuned to my mothers condition and needs. The only hesitation I have is the lack of response whenever my mom beeped for help. Staff people would walk by but sometimes did not respond to her for over 20 minutes. I can understand that they may be helping others or simply do not jump each time a patient is calling, but I feel strongly that this should be well explained to the patient and to the family caregiver, so that we at least know what to expect. read more

I totally agree with the Becky J review. The apartments are so dumpy and very strangely configured. The place needs a complete remodel on the inside. There are very few activities that the residents actually like to do. I have friends who have parents elsewhere and there are regular social hours, excursions out to lunch, etc. The Director there seems completely overwhelmed and hence cannot respond to any emails on a timely basis. The help there sits around quite a bit. My mom has also mentioned how terrible the food is. would look elsewhere because for the price it is not worth it. read more

My parents are very happy with their accommodations and the services they receive at your facility but I want to especially recognize and appreciate the work of Kim Evans and crew who facilitate the Broadview Club. My Dad suffers from Dementia and Kim and her colleagues have drawn him out and engage him in activities that make him happy. Not only that, Kim has kept us apprised of their activities and involvement - believe me, this only enhances their overall experience and our confidence in Ida Culver. Each week I look forward to asking my Dad about the Broadview Club activities and hearing about the fun he had. If you are thinking of sending a family member or a dear friend to the Memory Care unit, think twice about it. The care is very unimpressive. If a problem arises, they will find any excuse they can to have your loved one moved to another facility. My husband was told, after being at Ida Culver for over two years, that he would have to move because of his difficult behavior. Wow! If they can't care for someone with Alzheimer's, who can? We have moved him to an Adult Family Home that offers the most compassionate care ever. What a tremendous difference we are experiencing. The new facility is amazing. He is always clean, his room beautifully maintained, he is well fed, well taken care of, and given so much loving attention, and not to be overlooked, his behavior has improved dramatically since the move. He did not receive this type of care at Ida Culver. In fact, when the staff felt they needed to provide extra care for him and hired a person to do this, they definitely did not engage him in anything. Each time our family viewed what they were doing, we found it appalling, as they would just sit in a chair and stare at him. This was just not acceptable! Again, I am stressing, think twice about this facility. It has changed over the years, and not in a positive or better way. read more

I feel very blessed to write this review for my grandfather, who is 99 years old. Ida Culver House Broadview's Healthcare Center is beyond reproach. It is not often that you have staff with longevity and who care about what they do daily. At Ida Culver House they have staff that has been working the memory unit for over 20 years! This is unheard of. I watch the staff with my grandpa and there is such loving care provided. They not only attend to his personal needs, they attend to my entire family's needs. They watch out for my 94 year old grandmother who still lives on her own and visits daily. They check in with me to see how I'm doing as my grandparents begin to decline. The memory unit at Ida Culver house is not just a memory unit. It is a home for everyone who lives and works there. read more

Mother was in skilled nursing for 3+ months. 1. It is now 10 months later and they are still unable to get the billing codes right and do electronic billing to insurance company!!!! 2. While in facility, tried to do every imaginable test and get as much out of Medicare and insurance as possible. 3. Staff hides in stairwells and on phone as much as possible. 4. During lunch, if patient needs assistance in room, there is no one to help them to bathroom, etc. 5. During staff shift change, patients are not helped. 6. This is not a place to put anyone you love. read more

Terrible place!!! I lived here and left because of the poor leadership skills of management and some department heads. Food is not very good with a lot of it not edible. The whole institution is dirty and not cleaned up by the lazy housekeeping department. You are charged for every little thing and some people working there speak very little English so there is a communication problem which I found to be a big problem. Residents needs are not taken care of in a timely manner. Staff turnover is high, and staff hide out in isolated areas to avoid doing their work or helping anyone. I believe a lot of the staff have had no training in any job description whatsoever and have no clue of how take care of the elderly. I wouldn't put anyone in this place. It should be checked out by the Department of Health at a time when this place doesn't know before hand that they are going to be audited!!! read more

Our mother received wonderful care from the moment she arrived at the Ida Culver House First Floor Health Center. We appreciated the amazing care from all the caretakers who were always so accommodating of our mother and our family. She celebrated her 92nd birthday there, and because of the great Physical Therapy and daily care she was able to return to her home. We are so thankful for all the caring and thoughtful people there! read more

Very bad experience. Last year I placed my wife in this facility to receive hospice care, they apparently did not have enough aides at the time. The first night my wife called me and said nobody would come when she needed help. I called them and requested they attend to her, and they finally did. The next day, I went in, and she needed the potty chair, was not strong enough to get on it herself, I called for help, no one came, went out and asked for assistance, one aide, looked in and took off. I put her on the potty chair, and finally got an aide to clean her up. This happened a second time, the next day, that I couldn't get assistance and had to help her. She said they just weren't responding, timely at all. I talked to hospice, and after 3 days there, we did an immediate transfer to our home, and had caring care 24 hours a day, until she passed away. Would not recommend this facility at all. read more

Once I reached the decision to move to a retirement community, I drew up a list of "must-have" criteria as a guide in my efforts to identify an active retirement community in the Seattle area offering both independent living as well as the availability for assisted living and skilled nursing care, when and if needed. My search ended with my first visit to Ida Culver House Broadview (ICHB). Any attempt to describe the many wonderful features of ICHB would be redundant to the information available on its website at www.eraliving.com, which offers up-to-date highlights of the community at large, including its eight-acre professionally maintained campus and the cheerful and tasteful décor throughout its extensive interiors. However, any review of ICHB would be incomplete that fails to mention two features which heavily influenced my selection of this wonderful community as my future home. First of all, the quality and variety of the food are, meal after meal, on a par with the best restaurants and served in a beautifully decorated dining room, a far cry from the institutional atmosphere and mediocre food found in some other communities visited during my search. Just as importantly, the service is above average not only in the dining room but also in the day-to-day upkeep of the common areas which without a doubt results from the very caring oversight by a pro-active and exceptionally qualified management team. By assuring residents independent living as well as accommodating assisted living and skilled nursing arrangements in one's own apartment, if needed, ICHB offers in my view favorable odds for spending one's remaining years in a safe, pleasant and caring environment, with the possibility of never having to move again. Not impressive. Appears nice initially. The up front sales team excels. After that the staff is below average. After taking a week to evaluate my parent, they have taken over another week to give us back the $5000.00 deposit they cashed (even after repeated emails telling them we need the money). Here is the topper: The person evaluating our parent was borderline brash with us over the phone setting up the assessment BUT when she called to tell me our parent was declined- she was sickeningly sweet with so many compliments (BTW this time she was on speaker phone with her boss in the room). Disgusting and Not professional. This was not our first encounter with rudeness with this company. When our parent was discharged from the nursing rehab facility...the staff showed absolutely zero empathy or concern. I thought the assisted living part of this facility would be different. I was wrong. Empathy and customer service at ERA Living (the parent company) must not be a something they instill in their employees. I would look elsewhere. read more

My mother has short term memory loss. She lost her husband and needed more care and stimulation. She is in her 90's and other than short term memory loss, vibrant and with it. Ida Culver has a Broadview club option that really stimulates this short of memory loss ( versus advanced dementia or Alzheimers) provides great activities and friendship. The facility is beautiful and well run, the care is individual but the Broadview Club is a godsend. Very impressed with the care and kindness of this wonderful facility. read more

The skilled nursing facility is understaffed!! Care is not available during the meals so if a bedridden patient needs to use a bedpan they will not get help. If a patient does not wake up on morning round they will not get breakfast. Staff do not take the time to interact with patients or family even when the patient has new and worsening problems. Phones in room don't work. Physical, occupational and speech therapists are skilled and professional but on a very tight schedule. read more

We moved into Ida Culver three years ago with mixed expectations. My wife was glad to have reduced housekeeping and cooking responsibilities and was happy to downsize to make that happen. I was reluctant to give up my freedom and the home I had loved for so many years. Three weeks after move-in I have to confess that I loved it and still do! The staff have almost become family. The level of care and concern for all the residents, both assisted living and independent living is amazing. Yes, there is a "certain sort of people" who live here. Many are former educators and professionals, and certainly all our fellow residents are interesting in a great variety of ways. No snobbery, just acceptance if you are open minded. This is not a neighborhood of people that complain about their aches and pains. The significant money it costs is an issue, but knowing that we are secure and cared for with great food, services and activities is also a blessing for our kids. They don't have to worry any more about us like they did, and we can have all of the fun and none of the drudgery. I still have to wash our car and pick up the dry cleaning, but oh what a luxury to do things when you want to rather than when you have to. I'm quite sure we will be happy here until someday we go out "feet first". read more

My father is at Ida Culver House Broadview. This place is very close to my heart and all my family's heart. Following a fall injury, my Dad moved in ICHB in Health Care Center 1, skilled nursing facility at the first floor. The whole staff reflects care, respect, and treats residents with dignity. I am grateful to share my father with this place that I trust and see how and what they do. There are activities all the time to keep residents stimulated in the level of their abilities. Surrounded is adjusted to their needs and all safety precaution. With a nonstop love and energy, staff is alert and responsive. Occupational therapy and physical therapy are all the time close to resident. PT and OT continuously do update training for residents and staff for a new level of care appropriate to the new needs of care. I go to meet and visit my father in different hours of the day and night. Impressively the care is unchangeable with the same high quality of care during 24 hours of the day. My father does not have a foul odor or have neglected appearance. But my father has a severe dementia and communication issues. The staff amazes me with their creativity to reach and help my dear Dad. When I meet my father, I am relieved that he is in such good hands. Everyday I learn from these staff how they treat and care. I was impressed when I learned the longevity of the employees of the unit; 18, 20, 25 years. It is like a family that they love what they do and truly put their hearts in it. With confidence I say loud that ICHB do more and better than I and my family could do for my father. They are truly heroes for what and how they do. During the past two years ICHB has raised its rents by 10 % plus while the overall cost of living has increased about 2.6%, The residents (we wouldn't be here otherwise) are too old or infirm to move. On the other hand, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the physical facilities, though they could do with an upgrade, are attractive. read more

We moved my parents into Ida Culver Broadview 4 years ago. They really enjoyed their time there. The staff was fabulous: very personable and constantly interacting with the residents and us, as well. We got to know the dining staff especially well, and they were all just gems. Every day there were many activities the residents could participate in from bridge games down in the cafe to more structured events like outings to the Mariners games, shopping trips, and etc. The skilled nursing center was also very good and very convenient, as we had to use that more towards the end of my mom's life. We are now looking for a place for my mother in law (who I adore!) to live, and this is at the top of our list. I would highly recommend this facility. read more

After a couple of days in the hospital with a broken right arm my 93 year old father was advised by his Insurance Provider to return home where they suggested he could receive physical therapy. Our family believed he should be admitted into a Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation setting due to his age, the fact he lives alone, he is right handed, and he was suddenly dealing with balance issues associated with his injury causing him to be a fall risk. Because it was obvious he would have been unable to perform activities of daily living at his home, when he was denied coverage for a bed in a facility, he had no choice but to self-pay for one. During his stay at the Rehabilitation wing at Ida Culver the staff submitted requests for walking, bathing, toileting, dressing, feeding and other support in addition to the Insurance Provider's original plan to give some limited physical therapy. The new requests were subsequently determined necessary and approved. In addition, we later wrote and won an Appeal overturning the Provider's decision not to cover the basic cost of the room. We feel the professionalism, experienced care and guidance my father received at Ida Culver was instrumental in influencing the Insurance Provider to adjust their initial inadequate plan to one that was more appropriate. Our family owes a debt of gratitude to the Nurses, Therapists and entire Staff at Ida Culver which is why we have the highest regard for everyone who works there. read more

My dad is still at IDA Culver as I wait to move him to an adult family home. We have never been treated so Poorly! I can tell by all the recent high review ratings IDA Culver has something to do with encouraging this. Because my dad is Medicaid and has occurred extra expenses to IDA Culver, we are really getting the shaft. No matter where we turn we are treated so disrespectfully. There are some great staff on the 3rd floor of assisted living and the case manager is great. The skilled Nursing home is atrocious to us! There are at least 7 people who passed away in 3 weeks time is what I was told!!!!!!!!! 4 on the second floor, rehab and long term care (although they want to phase out of long term care because insurance doesn't pay much) 3 people died on the 1st floor of skilled nursing according to one resident. I didn't ask for this information. A resident's wife is on 1st floor. My sister was present when the flu hit and a couple lost their lives during that time. The administrator and some other staff (not all) really have it in for us and want us out of there as evidenced by the harassing letter I just received. The letter sounds like it's threatening to separate me from my dad. I really can't get out of there fast enough. From the original sleep deprivation chamber (roommate who wanted lights on all night- to the coming and going at night and early morning- to our ousting today from the tv room on the 3rd floor (lights not as bright as 2nd floor) we were asked to leave due to "a meeting" and "activities" which were to take place. After leaving the room for an hour I watched to see if anything would take place. so from 1:50-2:50 the room was vacant and awaiting a 3:00 event. Well, why did we have to leave so early??? Perhaps it was the pajama pants a staff member put on my dad for the day that they thought were inappropriate for that room? At any rate, keep treating us horribly and continue to receive your ratings. My dad is 91 and shame on you for anyone who thinks they can get away with this behavior. Your day will come when it will all come back to you. I would say losing 7 people is a big loss over a short time but.......perhaps you like that because then you get your precious "rehab" high paying insurance clients? read more
