I have been at CLA for five weeks now, in rehab for a broken leg post-surgery. I'm 75 and this is my first time in a place like this. The staff is outstanding. Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA's) are the heart of the operation, and come from all over the world. They are competent, cheerful, safe, clean, hard working and kind, as good as it gets IMHO. PT's, OT's and nurses do their jobs well, despite my desire to push myself too hard for my own good. There are some levels of administration missing for smooth running, but I understand this is temporary due to unexpected staff departures (for family and health reasons) If half-point ratings were available I would dock CLH a half-point because the food is awful. Some is inedible, diet orders are not followed, and it's always cold. Friends have ended up bringing me food, and given my low appetite that worked for me. The wonderful staff makes up for the poor quality of the meals, and then some. But be advised. The non-profit quality of caring is evident in the cheerful interior of the building, the architecture is airy and accessible, and the courtyard is lovely. CLA is not perfect, nor is anywhere. My first two weeks here were hard given the trauma of a post-op seizure, but I have felt safe and cared-for and I AM recovering. If, God forbid, I need rehab or long-term care, I would come back here. read more

This is a place to heal and recover. No matter what type of care is needed, it's always provided. The front office folks are always involved with your healing process. I spent 3+ months at CLH after a couple of weeks in the hospital, being rehabilitated so that I could go home. Let me start by saying that everyone of the employees that I had any level of interaction with, were superb. A large portion of the employees were immigrants and most spoke english very well or good enough to communicate. All the Nurses and Nurses's Aids were exceptional in the way they worked with and treated the residents. Rooms were cleaned most every day. The PT staff were also excellent. Overall, I would give this facility an A++ rating. read more

After recently being discharged from the hospital I went to Columbia Lutheran Home for rehab. This was my second trip to such a facility this year, so I have a recent comparison. Columbia Lutheran is phenomenal. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say. The nursing staff, nurses and assistants, were all outstanding. The PT and OT people were great to work with, very professional and competent. The facility is kept very clean, bright and cheery. The administration staff was also very good. They were professional and compassionate. The meals were excellent and, for a mere $5.00, my wife was able to have dinner so we were able to eat together. I would name people who impressed me but the list would be long, I would forget someone and that would be sad. Let me say, I did not meet anyone who was not exceptional. If I ever need to go to a rehab facility again, I hope Columbian Lutheran Home has a bed for me because they will be my first call. read more

The one star is for the admissions person at Columbia Lutheran Home. They would tell you one thing and then try to gaslight you- "I never said that" was their reply. One day this was the policy/procedure the next day THIS was the policy/procedure. They were clearly very annoyed when you asked them why the change. No explanation, just annoyed that you asked for clarification. Even with paper documentation proving what was discussed, like a broken record they would say through clenched teeth, "I never said that". This type of behavior is not only very unprofessional, it's just plain weird. Called my health insurance and they did not agree with the policy/procedures that this admissions person was insisting upon. Until they replace the admission person, I will be avoiding CLH and passing this experience on to the hospital social workers and patient care coordinators that suggested this place. read more

This Facility is horrible!! do not send you loved one here. they treated my grandfather horrible. The nurses are rude and disrespectful. They have no TLC at this location. I was on the phone with my grandfather and the nurse didn't no I was on the phone she had a bad tone and was very smart talking to my grandfather . I had to chime in over the phone and ask the nurse not to speak to my grandfather with that type of tone or disrespect. my grandfather was doing just fine when arrived to the facility but declined less than a week of being in the care of Columbia Lutheran because they did not pay attention to his needs and he retuned to the hospital. This place is horrible please keep you loved ones away from here. read more

My father has rehabbed at Columbia Lutheran Home 3 separate times. Our family was very satisfied with the care he received. The staff genuinely carea for the patients. we especially appreciated the compassionate attention he received from Jasmine, Rozina, Charity, Twyla, Larry, Tina , Lindsay, Christina, Charles, Jo, and others. we would recommend CLH to anyone. read more

I have been to many retirement homes and rehab centers. This place is very exceptional when it comes to the care. The nurses are super caring, loving, and attentive. They're always sitting with the patients and making sure they take their time to have a conversation with them. Places like these tend to forget that people need something as simple as a talking to. And this place brings that kind of attitude. They talk to their patients without any hesitation and with nothing but smiles. If I was older and had to come here, I would be happy to do so. read more

Can't help but feel sick to my stomach at the treatment my sister got there at Columbia Lutheran home while she was dying from lung cancer. Her room mate was verbally and physically abusive to my sister and her visitors and ended up pushing her against the wall. This women had worked there so all the white management were defensive of this women and even moved my sister out when she was pushed by Nancy. They then sent my sister to the hospital and told NW Univ. Hospital ER that my sister could not come back. We were advised by the hospital that her return could not be denied but they found a room for my sister and started hospice care that was neglected at Columbia Lutheran. Very sad and pitiful place. Did I mention that the whole time my sister was there, there was constant construction, and remodel going on across the hall and all over building. She was only there under 2 months after a stroke! read more

Columbia Lutheran Home is by far the best care facility in Seattle. My Grandmother was here some time ago, and she received excellent care and love at the end of her life. The staff was excellent, always there to let us know how Grandma was doing, and letting us be there with her when she was ready to pass. Just wanted to share the amazing experience my mom has had at Columbia Lutheran especially under these difficult times with virus, we couldn't ask for a facility to do more. Our family will be forever grateful for the TLC that's been provided for our mother. Staff has gone above and beyond on behalf of their patients often thinking outside the box to help with any problems or concerns that have come up. I just can't imagine any place my mom could be happier let alone the quality of care that's been provided. We have found staff to be easily accessible and very friendly. I have been a nurse for 30 years and spent nearly a decade of them working for CLH. Of all the facilities I worked, CLH was hands down the best. The staff there really does care for and about the residents. I left to pursue a different career path, but my experience working at Columbia Lutheran holds a special spot in my heart. That said, they *could* use more front line nursing and CNA staff. The ratios changed during my time working there that made it more difficult and stressful for all concerned and it was an issue frequently brought up to management. But it wasn't so difficult that it couldn't be overcome. read more

There are definitely plusses and minuses to this healthcare facility. My 87-year-old Mother had hip surgery after a bad fall. She has been in the facility now for about four weeks. First, the good: The staff is very nice. The physical therapy group is exceptional. Now, the rest: 1. My Mother lost ten pounds in her first two months. This represented a large percentage of her body weight and was dangerous. Two things contributed to this. First was a missed diagnosis of an infection in her mouth as a result of the surgery. This made eating very painful. Plus the food is terrible. The nurses seemed at times a bit oblivious to the severity of it. A doctor makes rounds once a week, so my Mom had to wait an entire week to see the physician before being prescribed medicine to alleviate the pain. 2. The food. Really really bad. We have had to bring food in from outside just to give my Mom something to eat. Apparently the staff all talk about how bad the food is too. Most modern hospitals have figured out that a sound diet is key when it comes to recovery from illness. This place has not figured that out. 3. Lack of central spokesperson. If you are panicked about whoever is in this facility that you love, it is difficult at times to know who to talk to, or to ask help from. There seems like a lack of hierarchy in the medical team. read more

The care and passion of the staff at CLH is exceptional. Skilled Nursing is a difficult field to work in and CLH takes care to make the facility into a community. I have been in many skilled nursing facilities and CLH is the very best. The wonderful people who work there, from nursing to activities, truly love and care for the residents. I've been an EMT for 20 years and I've been in pretty much all of the nursing facilities in Seattle. Because of my job, I get to see what nurses and aids are like at these places when family members of the patients aren't around. It gives me quite a bit of insight into how people are treated when "nobody is looking" so to speak. This is one of the worst facilities in Seattle. The staff is rude and difficult to deal with every single time. Finding a nurse can be like pulling teeth. When a facility calls for an ambulance you expect a nurse to be ready to give you a verbal report and paperwork. A proper patient hand-off is essential to good care and the people working here don't understand that. I'd never in a million years put a loved one of mine in this place. Please do your research when looking for a nursing home for a loved one. And please do yourself a favor and avoid this place. If you're looking for a good skilled nursing facility, look for Kline Galland. That place is universally recognized by everyone in the EMT game as the best place in Seattle. read more

As a medical provider caring for patients this was a very understaffed home. Nurses were worked to the bone. Care was spotty. Food poor. I would not send anyone I cared for to this home. Managers care about money. Not about care read more

Nurses and care staff seem to be very good. However, middle level and upper level management staff seem to have difficulty with the English language. Repeated care instructions are required. Signed agreements do not seem to "stick." Effectively, they just do what they want and disregard the wishes of the prescribing doctor, patient, or supporting family. Communication with the family is limited and often incorrect. The management needs to be watched like a hawk to assure proper care and billing. Food is bland to the point of being in-editable. read more

We were so optimistic about bringing our Mom, a lifelong Lutheran and of 100% Danish heritage, to Columbia Lutheran Home. Unfortunately, it sadly missed the mark. The main criticism is the food. It is unbelievably horrific. Nothing is edible. So many other facilities offer up menus, with healthy options, that it is unfathomable how poor the food here is. It is sad that a time that should be pleasant-- meals with others-- is such a disaster. We had to bring in fresh food all the time to make it palatable for our Mother to stay there. In addition, the rooms are very small, and not much care is given about whom the resident is paired up with. One of my Mom's roommates had dementia and yelled out all sorts of horrific things at my sweet Mom. I wish this place could be set up with private rooms, healthy, fresh, inviting food and a fresher facility. read more

Stay away from this facility. The reason they advertise their 5 star rating is that they don't report to the state what is really going here. I visited a friend here recently who had a brief stay (thank goodness). They couldn't wait to leave. The food was horrible and she often went hungry. She overheard employees complaining about rats in the kitchen! I spoke with aids who complained about new management that is running the place into the ground. Bedside manner is nonexistent. The nurses and aides are often rude and non responsive. I saw many unhappy employees and residents. I would never choose to put a loved one here. read more
