Our kids have been at SPX for 4 years now and plan to continue a few more years through 8th grade. The school has been fantastic for the kids and the family. They have great educators and administrators and strong ties with the church and parish community. They have a new and growing early child development center daycare that looks great. I've heard nothing but good things though my kids did not participate in that. CYO (archdiocese sports league mainly for elementary age kids) is very popular and is very active with lots of great volunteer coaches. It's open to all the community. Our kids loved CYO when they were in elementary and it really helped build community with kids and parents. The gym is top notch as is the softball / soccer field. The school has a lot of electives and activities for the kids to get involved in including but not limited to: art projects, plays, mathletes, RISE, STEM, piano recitals, volunteer opportunities, market day projects, altar serving, stations of the cross, adoration, reconciliation, school Halloween carnival, parish festival, field trips, tours of high schools, athletics, school dances, etc. The PTC does a lot of great things for the teachers and kids through fundraisers (Gala, spirit night, shirt sales, dances, etc.) The Watch DOGS program is active where dads, grandpas, uncles, etc. come and help in classrooms, at lunch, and help make the school day fun and safe. The kids love their teachers and classmates and we couldn't be happier.

I withdrew my child from the school. I have no faith just because they have a cross sitting outside the building do not trust smiley faces. I am disappointed in these adults who are also a grandparents could not help a child of God because they want to keep their image I suppose when we're all supposed to be a community and that picking and choosing who to support and ignore. My child has been attending this school since before Democracy Prep has even taken over. After the…read moretakeover, we were unsure of how we would feel, and for several months, I was satisfied at their curriculum and how they motivated the kids. Here lately, the school is changing things up, and it has me questioning whether or not to even keep my kid here. For instance, since the beginning of the takeover (August 2018), the kids were allowed to wear their uniform (white, royal blue, and blue collared shirts, with black or khaki uniform bottoms, like shorts, skirts, pants, etc). But now (Feb 2019), they have done away with all white collared shirts, and all the black uniform bottoms. I literally spent alot of money on the clothes that my kid can no longer able to wear. What they can wear now, is only the uniform shirt with the school Emblem that you have to purchase at $15 each. Not only that, but the kids are not even able to wear their jackets during this cold weather. Instead, they must only wear a thin $15 sweater that has the schools logo on it or they cannot even enter the building. Yet, everyday during drop off and pickup, the teachers and staff are all bundled up in their nice warm jackets and scarves of their choosing while some of these kids have nothing to keep warm since they cannot wear their jackets from home. Mind you, this is a low-income side of town. I was only able to afford 2 logo uniform shirts, and the logo sweater so my kid can be somewhat warm for $45. This might not sound like much, but again, we are low-income. The next complaint I have is that the kids are being forced to go to Saturday school now, but I did not approve because I am busy on this day and cannot take or pick up, so one of the teachers has told my kid that they will have to go to after school detention to make up for the saturdays missed. I guess the schools strict learning criteria has now added on a 6-day school week for these children. My child, which is an honor student that usually likes school, has recently asked me if they can please go to a different school. I am not there during school,so who knows what other strict and petty demands are being dictated to these kids. I made a yelp account just so I can vent about this and hopefully shine some light onto what is going on at this school because it is getting way out of hand.

With all my timing there I was very impressed and more than anything thankful. If you have any kids that need to go to school make sure they come here. Northside is a very good district however it is a bit tough to get the best services with them but at least give them a chance to tell you what they can help you with and everything. With me being autistic I was given the advantage to do sports and try different things that most people aren't able to do or try. Whenever I graduated from here at this district I can't be more thankful and more proud of what I've accomplished since Day 1 from coming here. Now that I see my little brother graduating here in 2025, makes me more happy because I know he'll do great in life and everything. I'm just curious to see how it ends for him and all those that apart of Northside. Northside was definitely the best I've been apart of. I can't be more happier and thankful than I already am. Wendy and Jo do an amazing job behind the scenes. I love that I get weekly emails about everything that's going on at the school and her class. If you are looking for a great school to call home ACORN is the place! They do have a wait list and going on a tour is a must. I recommend going online and check dates for the open house or call.

Bottom line, this school is different, and you are impacted by that as soon as you pull into the driveway. From the playground to the entrance, children are encouraged to play with their hands and truly experience learning. I just had an opportunity to attend a day fully dedicated to father and child (this was one of the most special events)! Thanks to the school and it's leaders/teachers who are so passionate about our children.
