Awesome service as our party kept expanding and people arrived at different times. They checked on us several times. Highly recommend the Chicken Wing Lollipops with harissa sweet and spicy sauce. This place used to be a favorite when coming to the beach. We went and noticed that they removed most food items that were German. (They still have the pretzels) As a German, I grew up on the staples. There is no bratwurst, sauerkraut, or frankfurters as they once had. The people were nice enough so thats not the issue. It is sad because this place was a standout among restaurants/bars, but now it's just like every other bar. When thinking of Biergarten, we think of many German dishes and beer like they once had. Perhaps the name should be changed from Biergarten to tavern. read more

Nice crowd. Music was playing so it wasn't quiet by any means. But it wasn't overpowering. Ordered the cheese curds and they were amazing. Ordered the mahi mahi tacos and they were very good. This beach side beer garden does NOT play around when it comes to yummy food, fantastic staff and a awesome vacation vibe. There's something for everyone: hot dogs, tacos, and burgers- even seafood. Can really only say it's "German" with the offerings of pretzels, bratwurst sandwhiches and a German beer on draft but it's still a great place! There are some local brews as well as a full bar. You can come in right from the beach and feel like you never left it. No play areas or colorful chairs here; just picnic tables, grub, and brews. One of the highlights of our stay- we will return. Came here for a special dinner - we were hoping for something cute and casual and it seemed this was the place to go! It wasn't. The service was very poor, our bartender seemed to forget to put our appetizers in until we ordered our entree. All the food showed up at once, with the burger already being cool. We had waited an hour already, so ate everything the way it came. The meat was extremely dry. Other employees prioritized conversation over the guests. The drinks were okay, but nothing memorable. Finally, the bathroom was completely disgusting. Overall, I would not return for mediocre food, poor service, and lacking standards at this establishment. Service... I came here with my sister and Brother in law for a boozey vacation lunch and had an awesome time! Our server Zack was the freaking man. We all loved him. Great and rare combination of being laid back and chill but also on the ball. A+ service. Drinks... We started with a round of green tea shots which were delicious and big, in a good way. We later got a round of pickle backs. They do not skimp you on the pours here and I love it. The Mayan Mule I got was on point too. Food... We shared the cheese curds which were bomb. Dipping sauce is great. Fried pickles could have been crispier but still tasty. I split the blackened Mahi Mahi tacos and blackened shrimp tacos. Both were tasty and really enjoyed the sauce. The Mahi Mahi was better in my opinion. This is the perfect spot for some food and drinks near the beach on vacation. I already want to go back. Went on a Saturday afternoon and sat outside as there is very limited inside seating. They have a cool outdoor sand covered seating area with shaded areas. Love this place. Went yesterday and as usual food and cold beer hit the spot. Short staffed for an unexpectedly busy weekend for the entire area. Only complaint was the patrons on the table next to us. They were rude to say the least. The waiter who just happened to swing by to help out the businesses did an amazing job to respond to each rude and cutting comment. Come on people! This was a neat place to watch the NCAA tournament! We love the small, but lively atmosphere of this bar. The drinks were good and refreshing. The sliders with fries are a perfect portion. The beer cheese is a must try! The staff was friendly and attentive! Will be back! read more

A wonderful place for a food, beer and friends. We recently visited Idle House Biergarten during a trip to Atlantic Beach and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. There is limited seating inside with a larger area outside perfect for a relaxing meal. Note: the ground in the outdoor seating area is sand. You're near the beach. What did you expect? I had blackened shrimp tacos. Good sized portion. Very tasty. Would order again. The drink menu was large and accommodating - beer, mixed drinks, wine and non-alcoholic drinks. My family and I stopped here for a quick lunch near the beach to end our vacation. We weren't expecting to fall in love with the whole vibe of this place! The outdoor seating area kept my 6 year old and 1 year old entertained which was awesome. Our margaritas were on point, the food was delicious and the service was TOP NOTCH. Idle Hour was our favorite find from our recent trip to Atlantic Beach! It had a cool vibe and a nice beer selection. When we went, there was live music outside. We came here for our anniversary dinner last night and it was perfect. The outdoor seating area has lots of tables, it's very comfortable, hanging lights and fun music add to a party atmosphere and sand on the ground is just plain fun. When we arrived we walked inside to the bar and were greeted like long lost cousins with big smiles, both the bartender and waiter said take any table you want and I'll be right out. We were served water and before you knew it our wonderful server Cody was bringing the almost burn your mouth appetizers and drinks that we ordered. For me the fried pickles were the star, although my daughter loved the jalapeño poppers. I also have to say we loved our drinks, my Bloody Mary was delicious, my daughter had the mango margarita and hubby had a spicy margarita. That he loved. The mains were also great. I loved my blackened shrimp tacos. They were probably the best I've had, and hubby loved his brat platter. Between the wonderful food, great service by Cody, fun atmosphere and great prices this place is sure to continue to be an Atlantic Beach standout dining destination. read more

So, my wife and I went to Atlantic Beach for an anniversary. It was funny, we found a really good price on a room, and then a problem came up: in doing research my wife found statistics saying that Atlantic Beach is like the most dangerous beach town in NC. I asked around at work on this, and was assured it's just drunk marines at the bars getting into fights with each other. Well, I'm too old and scared of getting sick to go to bars anymore. Never the less, when we dined outside at Idle Hour we were encountered with Drunken Marines. It was a couple seemingly on a first or second date, talking loud enough for everyone on the patio to hear them, singing along with the very corny music (think Sublime, 311, Smashmouth hits), and sometimes making comments about people's orders while they just downed drink after drink. I pointedly did not interact with them. So, I've got to point out that literally none of the staff wore masks. In fact when we arrived on the crowded porch we were literally the only people wearing masks, and it was like when the record scratches in an old movie. The service was very slow, but at least the server was polite. I got the bratwurst, which was decent. It didn't knock my socks off, but it was okay. Also my dinner came with a side of fries. They did them "McDonald's style" which is to say very thin and crispy, and they don't taste good about ten minutes after they come out of the fryer. My picky vegan wife got the Bavarian pretzel. The only thing on the menu she could eat. For a beach restaurant maybe this place is okay. But it would have been nice if they had slightly more varied offerings. I probably wouldn't choose to go back, but it wasn't awful. read more
