My husband and I bought a new home in Cambridge in need of a kitchen renovation. We found IDR Construction via Google and Yelp reviews and we were very impressed with the reviews and pictures of IDR's work. Ian took the time to talk on the phone when I first reached out about the project and the scope of work. He even reviewed some drawings I had done of the space and pointed out some things to think about for the layout (such as if we moved the fridge, we'd have to make sure we could access a water line for the ice maker). Ian met with us at the house to talk about the project, and we engaged Ian and IDR shortly thereafter. All told, the renovation took about 4 weeks, which was a great timeline and we are very pleased with how it came out. Ian was responsive, polite, and overall a pleasure to work with, and his subcontractors were polite, unobtrusive and cleaned up each day. We were fortunate in that we had a clear vision of what we wanted (which made the design process easy), but Ian truly helped bring that vision to life and thought of ways to make it better that we hadn't thought of, all while never being pushy or disrespectful. It was great working with Ian on our kitchen renovation plus electrical work throughout our unit. We initially contacted IDR Construction because of the great reviews and we have to say that we're extremely happy with the outcome of the projects. It was our first time taking on a renovation project and Ian was very easy to work with and the whole process was smooth. He went the extra step and helped us pick out the exact countertop slabs we wanted. He was flexible with our additional requests and his price was very reasonable. The only negatives we can think of were that they were late on a few scheduled meetups, but overall the experience was great. And the Grammy for the Home Renovation Nightmare and poor quality goes to.. If you are bored, have nothing to do but constantly supervise the construction to make sure work is done correctly then IDR is the company to go with. Because the permit was obtained using an expired third-party license and the license holder never showed up at the construction site to supervise the work. And of-course you must want incorrect measurements, not-level windows and floors, and roof vent cemented on the shingles. Pressure treated 2x4's work best for window sills along with trim that is of different widths. The cigarette butts and other debris does wonders to keep the lawn free of any pests. Why park on the driveway when you can use the lawn because the tire tracks help aerate the lawn. Door openings on load bearing walls dont need headers supported by studs, the new doors have jambs stronger than steel and can take the weight of the whole floor above. When in doubt, cut the studs because joists havent had a chance to hang by themselves in decades. And you have to love the sound of creaking tiles when walking on a new kitchen floor. These are just a few of the things, the full list runs in multiple pages. Best is when you ask for it to be corrected, Ian will insist on getting paid first. If you care about what's behind the paint (inside the walls), know little bit about how construction is done and have reasonable expectations of quality then AVOID IDR construction at all costs. read more

We signed our contract with Ian on Dec 1. By Dec 16 IDR has completed 98% of the work on our kitchen including all new cabinets with additional counter, new laminate flooring, 2 backsplash tilings, 2 additional outlets, 6 flush mounted ceiling lights and quartzite countertops. I found IDR on a google search after my wife and I were in a desperate need for help. We had to fire our previous contractor due to his lack of knowledge and dependability. Ian was quick to respond, quoted us in a nicely detailed fashioned, followed by an invoice with letterhead and had someone start on Black Friday for us. We needed a new shower for our tenant's bathroom, and the work IDR put in made both ourselves and our tenant very happy. The tiling job was done within a few days, but you can tell that he took his time where he needed to. After each night of doing work, the man doing the job nicely cleaned up after himself, and kept everything nice in neat in one spot. My neighbor across the street is also about to do some work, and I've already recommended IDR for the job. The only thing I would have liked, is for them to take away all the garbage that was left over at the end of the completed job. But I don't want to take away a Star for that. read more

Heaven sent! A friend recommended the contractor. Courteous, professional, AFFORDABLE. Our basement needed plumbing work. No one we called would agree to do it the way the city demanded and the two who agreed to do it were charging four times as much! Our contractor came one day, we discussed the work and the price and in a week, the work was done and MOST IMPORTANTLY, we PASSED INSPECTION! His plumber was great! Afterwards, we needed some siding work. His was the cheapest price (he gave us the choice of partial or full replacement) and his employees were in and out in half a day - no muss, no fuss. He is very reasonable, agreeable and is happy to work with you. BEST OF ALL, he calls to see if you like the work or have any questions. OPEN & HONEST - I rang him up to refurbish my cast iron tub. He was very honest and pointed me in the right and least costly direction. I am never using anyone else's services unless he says he cannot help me. As tempted as I am to keep his services "my little secret," a good contractor is hard to find and he's not just good... he is HEAVEN SENT!!!!!!
