Alaska Good Time Charters - Not a keeper but Capt David says this attracts the Lingcod!

Alaska Good Time Charters

We were a group of 8- husbands and wives- on this day trip. Captain David Carson put us right on…read morethe fish and worked tirelessly all day! Capt David knew where to go- was fun, courteous and very helpful to everyone- novices and experienced fishermen/women! Our First Mate was Ashlyn- who is from Hawaii! This girl ya'll... this girl worked extremely hard and smart all day. Ashlyn helped one of us (not me) pull in a HUGE Lingcod! He's pictured above! What a fun day we all had- all thanks to David and Ashlyn for such a successful day of fishing! Thanks to them we are taking lots of fish back to Georgia!

I live in Alaska and try to do yearly charters, but this was the worst fishing charter I have ever…read morebeen on! Captain Dave was not personable at all and the only time he talked to us he accused my boyfriend of marking his spots which he was only looking for the clam fishery place to show me as he went there as a kid. The only deck hand was a 16-year-old girl who was sweet but for the number of people that were fishing that day on such rough waters (it was awful weather), we really needed another person to help or a more experienced one. I had to do most of the rebating of my hooks, which again I can do but this scared me as I was not comfortable catching a swinging hook close to the size of my hand in the air as it bangs against the boat. Even the young girl kept commenting how on days like this they need more than one deckhand job as captain dave put her in charge of 5 people at the front of the boat and he took charge of a single-family in the back of the boat. We had stopped at 3 different locations with no one catching anything except the occasional flounder. As the trip was coming closer to the end (7th hour on the boat) Captain Dave approached me and my boyfriend and said, "you need to decide whether we move to another location or keep trying to fish here", he was clearly agitated and added in as I told him that I didn't know, "if I make the decision to move again (this would be move #4) and we don't catch anything people will be mad at him for always moving" I told him again that I didn't know again and he walked back inside and said that he will wait for a decision, the other family that was fishing helped me decide to move as that sounded like what captain dave wanted to do. As I went inside to get ready to move the other family that attended was a grandfather, father, and son trio who had hooked a fish as we were loading to go but they had to try and gavel it, he ended up losing the fish. Captain and deckhand were inside and I heard captain dave snicker and say "oh he should have waited for us" that family was left out there alone and had no way to call for help and later on the grandfather stated that he tried getting anyone's attention by waving his hands but no one noticed him. I am ok if I get a charter and don't catch anything but to have this kind of treatment and behavior was awful. the deckhand did state that fishing that day was bad but as we got off had to step over the large catch from another charter "crazy rays" which I do HIGHLY recommend. I also got more communication from that captain in just a few mins worth than I did from captain dave the whole trip and I got to see the HUGE amount of fish that he hauled in, it was impressive. I DO NOT recommend Alaska Good Time Charters but definitely book early to get into Crazy Rays charters, they cost a little more and fill up quickly but for a better experience and a higher chance of catching fish, I wouldn't do it any other way again. Don't waste your money with Alaska Good Time Charter!

Fisherman's Choice Charters - Guide playing on his phone, son bored out of his mind from not catching anything. Great times.

Fisherman's Choice Charters

Ray is a POS (period). Rude and unprofessional and his other charter guests were also embarrassed…read morewith his unprofessional demeanor. In fact the few chum we pulled out of the river had more personality than Ray. His website also claims numerous awards over the years - fact check it, as it just isn't true. Save yourself the embarrassment and go somewhere else!

Not trying to ruin this business, but I would be doing a disservice to other customers if I wasn't…read morehonest with my experience with Fisherman's choice. We got completely skunked (zero fish) during peak season; first warning sign should have been when they had availability (unbooked) for the entire week I inquired about, and they were also the cheapest. You get what you pay for, this is an inferior guide. Second red flag I should have noticed was when he took us fishing in a river that absolutely nobody else was fishing in; now keep in mind that this isn't some small secret hidden lake nobody else knows about, it's a huge river that nobody else chooses to fish in. And we learned that too late, for good reason. The lake is dead. Completely dead. Lake may have been good back in 1987 when he may have started fishing in Alaska, but now, the lake is completely dead. Guide probably keeps fishing this dead lake because he lives close by and is the only lake he can access, rather than more productive lakes like Kenai. Don't come fishing here with this charter. He blamed Chinese people for illegally fishing his waters, and said that we weren't catching anything because we were right in between the King and Silver runs. Bullshit, saw folks catching so many silvers yesterday at Ship's Creek. Just a bad guide taking none-the-wiser customers' money and fishing a dead lake. Their website goes on and on about how customers need to tip, even if the guide doesn't put you on any fish, that it's not the guides fault. Well, it sure as hell ain't the customer's fault, either. The customer is already paying upfront the fees, why should the customer pay for getting skunked too? Business owner chose to go in to business that has uncertainty, the business should eat the costs (tips) when the conditions aren't ideal, not expecting the customer to pay for that too. Yet his website goes on and on about tipping 20% to 50%, even if they don't get you any fish. What kind of participation trophy did these guys grow up depending on? Plus, they complain about their "good reviews" being intentionally hidden by Yelp. I find that hard to believe, the more likely explanation for their "good reviews" "hidden by Yelp" may be due to them writing fake good reviews about themselves, and Yelp recognizing the fake reviews and thus hiding them, appropriately. Plus, this guide hadn't caught a fish in over three weeks, just duping and collecting fees and tips from unsuspecting out of town visitors. Not like he made the trip enjoyable, he had the personality of a wet log, he ignores your questions, and plays with his phone while you try for fish. Absolutely do not recommend, this is a inferior, cheap, not booked up charter that fishes a dead lake that every other fisherman was smart enough to abandon.

Unexpectedly, we ended up being the only guests as others had backed out. We started out of Seward with a nice trip from Anchorage with Joan and Jeff as our shuttle team. They were both very personable and a pleasure to make the trip with to Seward. We were greeted with champagne and quickly got underway. Our accommodations were exactly as described in the Master suite. After two days of being wined and dined, we finally had to say, the "food is amazing, but we don't eat this much in a day. We need to slow down on the amount" LOL Certainly all you could possibly eat and nicely prepared. En En set beautiful tables for every meal and and our wine glasses were never dry. The weather was not the best for the first few days, so with everyone's agreement, we decided to roll the dice and cross the Gulf of Alaska to head towards Whittier. At that point, the weather became amazing, we did kayaking and had a 13,000 year old cocktail (Bourbon on Glacier ice). Who knew we would go to Alaska to get a tan? We spent the entire time cruising out on the deck getting sun. Captain Al and his team were wonderful hosts. I guess I could address every complaint that has been posted, but I'm not going to give it much credibility by spending any time on it. Yes, the boat is not brand new, but we had no issues on board (except the battery, but that's a little joke between Captain Al and us.). I can't speak to any of the other accommodations because we did not see or use them, but there were absolutely no complaints with ours. We are already considering the possibility of taking friends and going again some time. Thanks for everything Captain Al, En En and Christian! It was the trip of a lifetime! Thanks for being a part of it! Lori and Bob
