YOU HAVE TO GO ON THIS TOUR! oh my god, i teared up at one point because of how incredible this tour was. let me break it down for you. - the staff is insanely nice and knowledgeable (a huge plus)! - there's drinks and snacks on board - there's indoor portions to keep you warm but i would definitely bring layers just in case - plenty of space outside up front, on the sides, or on the upper deck. trust me when i say you can't be on a bad side - the captain and workers will absolutely make sure you see all the wild life and won't rush the tour at all! while on tour we saw otters , puffins, orcas, hump back whales , goats , and so much more! this tour is informational, fun, and beautiful! plenty of photo op moments and really chill. We cruised with Major Marine tours on a foggy day after driving up the Seward highway from Anchorage after it had been blown up unexpectedly to us by construction workers. We opted for the 8.5 hour cruise because we wanted as much of a chance as possible to see a humpback whale. I think the animals were loving the silver salmon that were very active jumping out of the water because we saw hundreds of Orcas and some of them even swam with our boat right alongside it at the end of the cruise. The ship captain communicated with other sister major marine boats and fishing boats while driving the boat in order to sail to the most wildlife. We saw sea lions, sea otters, and seals. The cutest ones were the white speckled ones by the glaciers. We also saw a lot of puffins and bald eagles . If you look down, you can even see various jellyfish at the surface of the water. Our cruise captain located a humpback whale at the end of our cruise and even told us when to watch for the tail and how long the humpback was reported to stay underwater before coming up for breath which was 10mins. Some changes that I noted were that they served sandwiches while some of the reviews mentioned prime rib, I think the sandwiches are a better choice for a boat considering they don't specialize in cooking ribs. They also offered complimentary coffee, and tea. The other big change that I noticed was sea sickness medicine at cost, so that those on the cruise can have an enjoyable experience. Our captain was very knowledgeable, he must've had a degree in biology, and he knew a lot about the glaciers and wildlife that we spotted. I don't know if the experience is captain dependent but I like to think it might be and I wish our captain had introduced himself more often for the purpose of honorable mentions in reviews. One other thing i noticed is that not many people remembered to bring cash yo tip the highly knowledgeable staff. I think that is a shame and maybe they can offer Venmo, Cashapp, or other methods for tipping in the future. Also, bring cash folks. Take care of your wait staff! read more

Also, the time at the glacier did not feel rushed at all. Sandwiches were simple but good. I waited to eat mine because I felt a little queasy. Wow. There are just no words to express what an amazing, breath taking experience this is. Apart from the awesome booking agent who answered my multiple phone calls and pesky questions, who also made sure i got my substantial discount even though it was expired; the very knowledgeable and interesting on-board park guide who sought me out to ensure my boyfriend's 50th birthday was recognized and all od the other great staff... We would have loved the cruise even if the staff had been awful because the scenery was just... I can't even describe it. You just have to see it for yourself. We took the glacier tour that leaves out of Whittier. We chose that particular tour because the waters are calmer and focuses on landscapes and glaciers rather than animals and its a shorter drive from Anchorage. ( The tour that leaves from Seward is on rougher seas but sees more animals and less glaciers). I absolutely recommend the cruise, skip the prime rib, it sucks and detracts from the overall enjoyment of sightseeing. read more

I have taken Major Marine Tours over the years and used to switch back and forth with "the other guys" depending on any specials that existed, availability, etc. However I switched over to Major Marine in earnest in 2017 after having several bad experiences with Kenai Fjords Tours after they were purchased by the Alaska Collection. I have been on Major Marine Tours both in Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay. Pricing between the two outfits is competitive but what I actually like about Major Marine is the assigned seating. With KFT it greatly reminds me of boarding at the airport when everyone rushes the plane. Since it is open seating, everyone tends to rush the boat. Several times I had been on KFTs boats and left my camera bag for a few moments to go outside to take a photo and came back to find my bag moved or pushed off to a corner and someone else sitting where I had been only moments before. With the assigned seating on Major Marine, I haven't yet had that problem. There have also been times during the reservation process I had explained that I was a photographer and tend to bring large super telephoto lens with me. Imagine my surprise (and happiness) to find I was assigned my own table by a thoughtful customer service rep. Obviously this doesn't happen as often during the summer months when the cruises are more full. But I do appreciate the consideration that went into that thoughtful move. All of the staff on board have been welcoming and helpful. With Major Marine's acquisition of the Harbor 360 Hotel in Seward their boarding takes place in two different places, depending on which cruise you are taking. Additionally they have a great vegetarian meal offered on board. They also offer a variety of mixed drinks for those that are wishing to imbibe a bit. Perhaps the only less than stellar experience I have had was last year during a cruise out of Whittier when I decided to stop and talk to the office about the weather and concerns about low to near zero visibility. I found the staff member I spoke to quite unfriendly and someone who was obviously from out of state attempting to talk down to me as if I had no experience with Alaska. Again that was the only bad experience I have had in many years of being on board a Major Marine cruise so I know it is not a normal customer experience. Highly recommend Major Marine. We did the gray whale cruise, but we didn't see a single whale. I know it's never guaranteed to see them but it seems like it's more unusual to see them than not, since the captain said that haven't seen any whales this season.. The name of the tour is "Gray Whale Watching Cruise" which is very misleading. We still enjoyed seeing the beautiful mountains, glaciers, some birds and the staff was really nice. read more

Took the Prince Williams sound tour from Major Marina Tours. Got to check out two glaciers. All while eating salmon and prime rib. Amazing for the 41/2 hours of cruising and getting up close to the most natural (what you would think) for Alaska. They gather fresh ice right from the water. Of which, is placed right in your drink. Very comfortable and definitely no motion sickness whatsoever, not that I get that but when I say Comfortable, it's just that. The sun was shining, the wild was thriving, and very peaceful sounding after the captain would give ample time to stop the engine close to the glaciers to experience the atmosphere. My new trip already includes this tour, so I asked for a refund and they told me since the reservation is three years old, they can't refund me and in fact, if I was going to use it, they would charge me more because the prices have increased. Myself and my two teens enjoyed 5 hours glacier and wildlife tour. We seen whales, sea otter, sea lions and magnificent Alaska glaciers. Captain and entire crew were vary polite and knowledgeable, the Forest Service guide Jim was super. This was the worst boating experience I've ever had and I'm from Maine. I'm used to boating and fishing. I'm also used to being on a boat in rough conditions. Everyone on the "cruise" was sick/puking. It was miserable. The crew didn't do enough to help. It was unsafe and unenjoyable. There were no safety precautions instructed. This was not a cruise, it was a speed boat going through the choppy Gulf. To come all the way to Seward to be let down is such a disappointment. There were several times I thought we'd need to make an emergency detour because of how sick people were. People could have became hypothermic based on the conditions. The food was barely edible. There wasn't enough heat inside. Overall a miserable experience! I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. read more

We went on the 6 hour glacier and wildlife tour with this company and it was amazing. The staff were friendly and very helpful. They provided motion sickness medication and other options for those who were sea sick, checked in on everyone when we would hit choppy areas, and were very accommodating to people's needs. The captain was very knowledgeable and stopped to show us killer whales, humpback whales, puffins, sea lions, otters, and glaciers, and was very helpful in pointing out where these were located. They provided lunch (sandwich, chips, and granola bar + a drink), and handed out brownies as a snack too, but also had a variety of drinks for purchase as well. They even made margaritas out of a block of glacier ice! I would definitely recommend and would definitely do this again! read more

WOW!!! We spent forever looking for ANY winter boat ride near Anchorage, and anyone that went out charged at least $200. We did the Winter Wildlife cruise for 4 hours, and got some early discount of 10% making it $80 a person. Amazing professional staff, captain narrarates the whole trip. We saw bald eagles, sea lions, many otters, and RIGHT near the end of the tour, the captain got some porpoises to play with the boat and we stayed out an extra 30 minutes. I dont have enough amazing words to say. If we didnt see one animal this still would have been 100000 times worth it for the glaciers and the ride. They have an indoor warm cabin for those who need it, and served cocktails and seasick remedies. Beware, there are some parts that get TERRIBLY rocky. I know i get motion sick and i prepared for days with dremamine around the clock, patches, and wrist bands. It still got me for a bit. If youre at ALL prone to motion sickness, TAKE EVERY PRECAUTION. Major Marine Tours office might be in Anchorage but their tours primarily operate out of Seward and Whittier. Both locations have very nice day tours of the Kenai Fjords and Prince William Sound (respectively). If you are primarily interested in viewing Glaciers I would recommend the tours out of Whittier. Prince William Sound has quite a few large Glaciers. If you are primarily interested in wildlife, I would recommend the tours out of Seward. The Kenai Fjords have a higher concentration and variety of birds. You also have a much better chance of seeing whales out of Seward. If you are hypersensitive to seasickness, I would recommend the tours out of Whittier. Prince William Sound is mostly protected waters and thus quite a bit calmer than Seward which is directly exposed to the Gulf of Alaska. Both locations have large well equipped ships and seasickness is usually not a problem. Do not put too much stock in the food service they advertize on the tours. The food is ok, but it is snack bar quality. I find the whole food service process distracting from the real reason you are on the tour, the scenery. I would be much happier with a cold sandwich served quickly. With the information above in mind, I would recommend browsing their website for the tour that best fits what you want to see. I am sure you will enjoy any tour you choose. All of the tour operators do a fine job of showing you one of the most beautiful places on earth. read more

We took the Prince William Sound glacier tour today and had a great time. I definitely preferred it to the Kenai Fjords wildlife cruise we took out of Seward. Anyways, the set-up inside the boat was really nice. We requested and were assigned to a window table. We enjoyed lunch there. It was a head and shoulders above the Kenai Fjords luncheon at Fox Island and generally quite good for a tourist buffet. They served a nasty iceburg lettuce salad (ok, it was just fine, I just balk at iceburg lettuce), sourdough bread (a bit dry from being heated up), salmon (my folks said it was good), prime rib (yum), and a decent rice pilaf. We saw lots of great wildlife (sea otters, eagles, and lots of other birds) and we got to see tons of glaciers. I'd say we got to see at least 10, if not more. They were gorgeous. We waited near two of the larger glaciers for a bit which was perfect for picture taking. And, low and behold, we got to see one of them "calve" (ice break off). The captain was a cool guy (although I wish we could have heard him more clearly), the crew was friendly, the barkeep rocked, and our park ranger wasn't bad either. She had lots of interesting commentary, although she certainly wasn't a public speaker/entertainer-type. On the way back they served a dessert bar. It was nothing to write home about but the brownies were pretty good and we were ready for a snack. We had a fabulous time and would certainly recommend this cruise to others. As a bonus, you get to drive (or take the Alaska Railroad) through the largest North American tunnel to get to Whittier -- the tiny town from which this cruise (and others) depart. I booked the half-day rail/cruise combo online. Very easy to book, and there's a small discount on the rail for booking it with the cruise. I added the all-you-can-eat Alaskan salmon and prime rib buffet lunch for $15pp. Food was tasty, though my expectations were low. The train was comfortable and the views were amazing, even on a rainy day. Easy to check in, and just a short wait to board the boat. The boat was nearly fully-booked, though we lucked out with a table by the window to ourselves. There was an observation deck where you could see 360 degrees around the Prince William Sound--just breathtaking. The glaciers are INCREDIBLE. Our guide (I think his name was Sam Oakland) did an awesome job of pointing out the wildlife along the ride and telling us about the glaciers. I liked this tour because they did not go too fast past a bunch of different glaciers, but took us to see two major ones and showed us wildlife around Blackstone Bay. It was easy to get out on the observation deck to see stuff, and since our table was reserved, we didn't feel like we would give up a place to sit. We have been on glacier cruises with Major Marine tours over the years approximately 10 times now and counting. Major Marine Tours has been our #1 choice. We have been on the half day and full day cruises out of Seward, as well as the day-trip from Whittier. Recently however, on our most recent trip, we noticed the seating has changed. The tables and chairs have been replaced by booths. Hence the loss of one star for this review. One of the reasons Major Marine Tours was our favorite was because of the reserved tables and chairs, which were so much better for mobility getting in and out than the new booths are. Getting stuck in a booth and having to ask others to move in order to get in and out is awful. We have enjoyed the option to have our picture taken upon boarding. Our collection of pictures are keepsakes for us. The food is phenomenal and the full bar is great as we have enjoyed the fantastic Bloody Mary which helps to settle the stomach. The views are spectacular, the park rangers on board are great for information. Whale sightings top out as the number one attraction. However the bird life, otters, dolphins and seals are a delight as well. I have added only a few photos here, as I have LOTS! So many wonderful photo ops especially if the weather is sunny. We have taken out of state visitors along on these cruises and have enjoyed every minute. The full day out of Seward is for the more hearty individual. I recommend the half day, better yet the one out of Whittier for a first timer. Of course, the lodging in Seward is ridiculously expensive and the tunnel schedule to Whittier requires research. Despite the effort, for a truly Alaskan experience, it is worth it to go with Major Marine Tours. read more

We had a good time on the tour. Kathleen our park ranger was super knowledgeable!! I asked her a million questions on different glaciers or earthquakes and such. The boat was kept clean, the staff was up kept well. Very personable. The all you can eat buffet was good not great. Prime rib was the hero of the meal. The salmon was just ok. My wife and I have been lucky enough to take tours and excursions all over the world in our travels and this one was easily a Top 5 experience for us. We sailed with Captain Laura and her crew this past Friday and they led us on a 5 hour tour of the Prince William Sound. Almot immediately after leaving the dock Captain Laura spotted a whale in the water and he put on quite a show for all of us. After playing to his "audience" for about 5 minutes we continued on our journey. What impressed me the most about the Captain and her crew was how knowledgable they all were and how they genuinely cared that we all had a great time. We saw Surprise Glacier up close and the glacier did not disappoint either with multiple large calvings. The lunch that was served was good but certainly not the highlight of the trip. We booked 2 cruises from this company, at Seward for Kenai Fjord and at Whittier for Prince William Sound. Honestly, the cruise at Whittier couldn't compare to the one at Seward. It's boring probably mostly because we have seen better in Seward. The only things that I like from this cruise were the calmer boat (you won't have sea sick from this cruise) and the Surprise Glacier. But should I say I was kind of disappointed because the crew wasn't really as great as the other one. The captain was not really communicative and informative, she never really warned us about how long she is gonna stay in 1 spot or informed us when it's time to leave a spot. We feel in rush to see the Surprise Glacier. I don't like the Ranger as well, she explained things like reading a book. Not interactive, not enthusiast, she even made the joke sounds like a speech. The 5 hours cruise felt like 8 hours. We spent 2 weeks in Alaska visiting Anchorage, Denali, and Seward and this ranks at the top for favorite memories of the trip. We took the Kenai Fjords National Park cruise with Major Marine tours and the trip was incredible! The tickets included reserved seats inside the cabin so we had a comfortable place to sit if we wanted to go in and warm up and had seats and a table that we could utilize for the light, but filling lunch that was included with the tour. The boarding process was easy and the whole boat, including the restrooms, was very clean. The boat captain narrated the tour, telling us about the history of the area and about the animals that we would see. She took great care to make sure that people on all sides of the boat had plenty of opportunity to see things and take photos. We saw SO much wildlife on this tour. Every tour is different, but on ours we saw orca, harbor seal, Steller's sea lion, Dall's porpoise, humpback whale, sea otters, swarms of jellyfish, tufted puffin, horned puffin and several other species of pelagic birds. The glaciers were incredible too. We stopped at the Aialik glacier, where the captain turned off the motor for about 20 minutes and asked us to stay quiet and listen. The sounds of the creaking and crackling ice were incredible and we got to see large chunks calving off and falling into the water as the ice shifted. The whole day was a magical one. We had a great time and we came away with plenty of good photos to commemorate our trip. read more

The trip out to the Glaciers were great but then again, any boating company would be alright too if that was the case. They loaned us binoculars which was very nice of them. But the all your can eat Salmon and Prime Rib Buffet WAS REALLY BAD! Salmon was over cooked. I am a foodie person and work at a culinary school so i know how my food should taste! Not like cardboard. And what topped it off for me was that when i told the person who worked there that my friend just dropped her wallet into the ocean, she just looked at me and said 'oh sorry. maybe your friend shouldn't have had her wallet with her'. read more

If you're trying to decide between this company and the Philips this review is for you. My wife booked this trip and at first I thought it was a mistake. The boat looks a little out dated compared to the other and the water was rougher than hell. Once we set sail the captain did everything he could to make sure we sailed smoothly. I usually get car sick but had no issues on the boat. We spent a longer amount of time at each stop compared to the other boat which we frequently saw but it only stuck around for a short time. We stopped at a waterfall and came within feet of the cliff which made for excellent photos. The food was excellent and all you can eat as well. Overall a great experience and will definitely be back. read more

We had a great time on our glacier cruise. Nice staff, and it didn't hurt that it was an 80 degree day in Whittier (WHEN DOES THIS EVER HAPPEN? NEVER!) From booking to disembarking, our whole experience was easy. Definitely get one of the Alaskan coupon books (northern light or one of the other ones) so you can get a discount. It's worth it even if that's the only thing you use out of there. We took the 4-1/2 hour Prince William Sound tour out of Whittier to two glaciers. This was one of the best parts of our first trip to Alaska. Captain Morgan (yes, that is his name), Ranger Julie and the entire crew were so incredibly nice. Captain Morgan did an amazing job of getting close to the glacier, a waterfall and rookery (saw an Eagle up close here hunting for birds). Nothing special about the buffet but still very good prime rib and salmon. I definitely recommend it, as it starts shortly after departure around lunch time and was good to hold us over until dinner. Plus they had Alaskan Summer Ale on tap! Ranger Julie was very knowledgeable and we loved all of her commentary. We saw Eagles, Otters and Harbor Seals. Dress in layers. It was a beautiful clear day, but with the breeze could be a little chilly without jeans and a jacket. We drove from Anchorage, and the single lane tunnel on the train tracks was freakin' cool. As an afterthought it might have been nice to stay the night at the Inn in Whittier and then return to Anchorage in the morning. read more

Weather was awful with less than 50% visibility, and I'm still giving 5 stars! Food was incredible. Crew was awesome. Ranger Jim was an unbelievable asset that helped to explain everything. There were many "If you could see to your left, you would notice the ......", yet he still kept everyone interested, including the kids who he "knighted" as Junior Rangers at the end of the trip. We got very close to a glacier and actually had 75,000 - 150,000 TONS of ice break to the ocean while we were watching. It was unbelievable. The atmosphere was amazing despite the extreme rain and fog. Although the weather was awful, the crew and Ranger were awesome and I definitely recommend them. FINALLY! They fished out some of the ice from the glacier that was clean while we were there, then had $4 mixed drinks made with the glacier ice. I had the glacier margarita and it was awesome. We did the 5 hour Prince William Sound cruise from Whittier out to Surprise Glacier. First let me say that the crew on our ship was the best! They were very patient fielding questions about every little thing from the passengers. I myself would've been annoyed before we left port! Even though it was only a 5 hour crew, talking with some of the staff made you feel a certain connection with them - me especially as most of the staff lived in SF and were up in Alaska during the summer. We were lucky in that we went on the cruise during one of the most beautiful days this summer without a cloud in the sky. On the way to the glacier we were able to see a couple of humpback whales, some bald eagles, and otters playing in the water. The glacier itself was magnificent and the ship got really close that we got some great pictures. We got the buffet add-on which consisted of all you could eat salmon, prime rib, rice pilaf, and garden salad. One of the staff was able to pull some ice from near the glacier which they put in our sodas which i thought was cool. never in my life did i ever think i'd be drinking coke on a cruise ship in alaska with glacier ice in my cup. They did sell snacks and drinks during the whole trip if you so wishes to buy them. I would definitely recommend taking a cruise with Major Marine Tours, especially for the high level of customer service they provide! read more

We took the train from Anchorage and also purchased the salmon and prime rib lunch. We went on the Blackstone Bay Glacier Tour in Prince William Sound. The train seats are assigned. We had a table, which seated 4. We had a party of 4 so we didn't have to share. It was rainy and very cold the third week in August. Guests who purchase the lunch option are seated on the main floor together. Guests who did not purchase the lunch option are seated on the second floor. But guests are free to go between the 2 floors. Seating is assigned. They are booths, which make it very hard to get in and out. We had 4 in our party and were seated with another party of two. They had a few booths in the middle that were empty. People later sat in the middle seats with no problem. The food is just okay. The salmon was dry and tasteless. The prime rib didn't seem like a prime rib cut of meat. But it was tender. Everything is self-served, except for prime rib. They slice you a ultra thin piece. But every thing is all you can eat. Soda and tea are free. You can buy liquor. Dessert was served later and was plentiful. They were okay. Guests who didn't buy the lunch option were able to buy a plate of dessert for $1. Some guests complained that we didn't see much wildlife. But this isn't advertised as a wildlife tour. It is a glacier tour. The two big glaciers, Beloit and Blackstone, were fabulous. We stayed about 30 minutes at each glacier. Guests crowd the front when we arrive. We found the best time to take family pictures was at the end. People had gone inside. The crew was happy to take our pictures. We loved the experience and the beauty. But the food leaves much to be desired for the price. If you can buy sandwiches in Anchorage that would be better. Restaurants are very limited in Whittier. If you drive to Whittier, you may have time to buy pizza, hamburgers, fish sandwiches, fish and chips, etc. if you take the train, you won't have time. read more

Had such an incredible experience. The staff is wonderful and so friendly. The food was excellent. We kept hyping about the salad dressing because it was BOMB. I highly recommend them, everything was amazing and we'll worth the money. Thank you for such a great experience. read more
