A "clean" booth supposedly ready for customers to be seated.
    Charles T.

I wanted more than fast food and a drive through around 7:30 tonight. One of the few sit down restaurants open for his was ihop. As I approached from Veterans Boulevard I wondered if they were actually open because the sign near the street was almost dark and the building sign was only half lit. Also, the lights in the roof eaves were all out. If it wasn't for the cars in the parking lot I would have suspected that it was closed. After a few minutes of waiting I was offered any of the front booth seating just before another customer rushed in through the front door, nearly running into me and bypassing the hostess/ server. She went to a far booth where the hostess/ server skipped past me and took her order. The hostess/ server then asked if I wanted a menu. Usually that is automatically a given. She then asked for my drink and went to the server line. She came back with everyone's drinks and a menu. I ordered the mega monster burger with no ihop sauce (which i suspect would be thousand island dressing like every other "special sauce" is) and well done French fries. While waiting and beginning this review I noticed that the faux wood floors had sticky food residue in many places along the main aisle for the booths and going to the server line. Also, many bits of paper from sweetener packs and straw wrappers under the tables. The meal was good. Presentation was as expected and the food was as ordered. I usually do not like pickles and onions on a burger, but those can be removed, sauces can't. The server asked if I would like any ketchup and I agreed. She brought a plastic cup of it instead of a bottle due to COVID-19 restrictions, but it was enough for the nicely well done, crispy fries and a little on the burger. The twin patties were well done and there was a generous amount of Romaine lettuce, a slice of tomato, only a few pieces of onion, and about six bread and butter pickle slices. The meat could have used some seasoning, but was palatable and enhanced by the two types of cheese. All of the vegetables were fresh and the patties still hot. In all it was good enough that I nearly cleaned my plate. My server was very nice and responsive and offered several refills of my drink. She also promptly removed my plate and glasses. She said they were open all night ( it was a Saturday) and to take my time since I had brought a book to read. She was chatty with her other customers and had a friendly attitude. Her name on the receipt was Ashley Q. If not for the initial impressions of the outside lighting and poor cleanliness I would have given this review four stars.

The second we parked, it felt like we'd driven straight into a time warp. The only things missing were a jukebox in the corner and a waitress on roller skates calling me "hon." Frostop is pure nostalgia -- no filters, no fluff, just good food and better vibes. It's the kind of place that makes you half-expect the Fonz to walk out and give you a thumbs-up. Now, the food. Let's just say if flavor could wear a leather jacket, this shrimp po' boy would be James Dean. The shrimp were fried to absolute perfection -- crisp, golden, and light enough that you don't need to call your cardiologist afterward. The batter had zero oil slick, which is rare enough to deserve its own holiday. The onion rings? Crisp enough to make that satisfying snap when you pull them apart -- not a greasy drip in sight. And those crinkle-cut fries? Cooked just right -- golden on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and salty enough to make you reach for another sip of that sweet tea (which, of course, was the real deal -- sweet, cold, and dangerously refillable). My colleague went for the burger po' boy and hasn't stopped talking about it since. The man looked genuinely emotional for a second -- like he'd just reunited with a long-lost friend. Oh, and the prices, ridiculously low! Maybe not from the sixties, but definitely not from this decade either! If you find yourself anywhere near Picayune, do yourself a favor and pull over. Frostop isn't just lunch -- it's a mini vacation back to a time when food was simple, service was friendly, and nobody cared about counting calories. If you follow me, you know I don't give five stars away easily, this place deserves each of those five stars!

It seems that their familiar logo beckons in all of its bright yellow neon glory road-weary travelers, partying college kids, parents with kids in tow, hungry workers seeking a casual and quick sit-down meal and just about everyone else from every walk of life. Since Waffle House opened its first location back on September 5, 1955 in Avondale Estates, Georgia, it quickly established itself by offering a consistent selection of food and by being open twenty-four hours a day. For me, the biggest appeal of Waffle House has always been their hash browns, which you can get basic or topped with a variety of toppings such as chili, white sausage gravy, cheese, ham, onions and so many more items and you can combine these toppings in a multitude of ways. For my main course, I have usually gone with their patty melts or one of their egg breakfast options. I myself can see the strangeness that I have never had a waffle in a business where waffle is in their very name, but I prefer a more savory breakfast than a sweet one. If you are in the southeast United States, odds are you have probably passed a Waffle House location. It seems that they are on almost every major highway exit ramp and strategically placed throughout most cities and towns in the southeast. If you see one, give them a try.

Although I ordered a regular waffle, I saw a waitress bring out a blueberry for someone else and commented to my husband how I should have ordered differently. Our waitress heard me and insisted on making me a blueberry waffle instead, assuring me the other would not go to waste. All the ladies working behind the counter were very friendly, engaging, and fun. It was clear they all loved working together, and it was nice to see them helping each other out with their customers. Sitting at the counter was a great way to watch them interact, and we appreciated how they all wished us safe travels back home. If I lived in the area, I'd be in here all the time. Good home cooked food with a great vibe!
