My husband, a University of Illinois alum, and I were in Champaign-Urbana for a wedding, and he wanted to show me around the University of Illinois campus. The first place that he insisted on stopping at was the Illini Union. When we visited, this was a hub of activity. Illini Fest was going on this weekend. We went to the basement, which was home to several restaurants, a recreation center featuring a bowling alley, and a live band playing music. I really enjoyed seeing his old stomping grounds. The Illini Union is really the center of the University of Illinois. There are tons of things to do here whether you're a visitor, alumnus, or student -- both during the school day and after classes. Some highlights of the union: - Awesome recreation room. Great quality of games, particularly in terms of rhythm games (DDR Illini) - Great place to hold club meetings (like the Illini Chess Club) or academic meetings - Relaxing place to spend time between classes - Awesome venue to supplement quad day activities - Convenient place to stay for campus activities (if you want something more historical feeling, as this doesn't have super new facilities) - Large space for conferences, lectures, and events - Convenient shop for tech, food, and bookstore items. - Great place to grab a bite to eat. Although there's lots of food options on Green Street, you can grab fast food or coffee here without ever having to go out in the rain or snow when the weather isn't as nice. This place is old and decrepit. Maybe half of the outlets work if you can even find one. Food Is very expensive so they can take advantage of students and guest's who have no other choice. Avoid here, go to the Champaign Library for your study/computer needs. What an old dump! read more

You simply cannot beat the Illini Union, the University of Illinois's official student union. It is, without a doubt, the heart of the university. As an undergraduate here, I would set up shop in the Vending Room (open til 3am nightly), procrastinate with concerts and improv comedy shows at the Courtyard Cafe, and go bhangra dance in the Ballroom when the Indian Student Association threw its parties. Landmark Review: Oh this place brings back so many memories, so many nooks and crannies. There is a lot of hidden stuff here that is great. I spent countless hours here studying away. Let me highlight some great finds 1. Bowling alley, arcade, billiards, xbox rental in the basement 2. Lots of restaurants downstairs to eat at and some snack/coffee shops on the first floor 3. There is the Illini Union ballroom which serves AYCE lunch 11.95. A lot of professors stop here for lunch 4. Art gallery on the first floor 5. McKinley health center (I wish I knew about this when I was a student here) Free supplies Twice Per Semester Cold pack Pregnancy test Yeast infection kit Wound pack Every Two Weeks Condom pack Lubricant or spermicidal gel Latex barriers 6. Tenant union- if you have issues with your land lord 7. Illini book store for all your Illini gear/book needs 8. Illini quad shop for all the random home needs/snacks when you don't want to leave campus 9. Tech zone- they can help repair your computer 10. Document services- if you need help printing brochures, flyers etc 11. Lots of areas to study including the lounges which are hidden off to the side. Thoroughly enjoyed the Illini Union. The Union fronts one end of the main quadrangle on the Illinois University campus grounds. This Union is built very much like the one found at Indiana University (Indiana Memorial Union). Both have hotels attached for parents and alumni who come back to campus for visits. The hotel at the Illini Union has 70 some rooms and is very nice, and has most of the accoutrements one would expect. The Illini Union also has a number of eating places on the first floor, a large bookstore, a main dining room (the Colonial Room), and a bowling alley among other things. This is a neat meeting place for students and alumni all during the school year. If you are on campus, make sure you stop by the Illini Union. read more

This place looks really classy inside. There are plenty of couches to sit (or sleep) on and lots of events take place here as well. The Illinois Student Senate office is located here as well as their meetings. read more

Being a student here for four years, the Illini Union has a special place in my heart. Not only is it the center of student body, but it also serve as a great and convenient study location. Need a quiet space? Come study in the president's lounge. Need to have a meeting set up with your other student organization members? Go up to the second floor in the RSO office. Don't have time to go back home and make lunch? The basement's got a variety of quick bites at your service. Need to checkout some tech goodies that are vital to your studies/work? Hit up the tech center and they sell a lot of gadgets ranging from laptops to iphones. A lot of student events are also hosted here in this building, in addition to some dance classes on the third floor. Oh, did I mention that this place is also a hotel? That's right! It is also a great hotel if you are from out of town and want to visit the campus, since it is literally the heart of campus, physically right next to Green Street, which is the lifeblood of the school in terms of restaurants. The days of U of I, are some of the best days of my life. The main spot on campus was the Union, plenty restaurants and entertainment inside. Also the hotel is there for visitors. I really miss Champaign-Urbana!! read more

Only been to the first floor and food court. Has a variety of businesses in it, banks, coffee shop, restaurant etc. Kinda everybody's memory. The entrance hall is very relaxing with ancient looking clock and couches. read more

Busy, busy, busy place. I was there for a college tour with my teenager and the tour started here at the. That place is buzzing with activity and young folks with laptops everywhere. Overall, U of I was a very nice campus . . did I mention it was busy? read more

Illinois' Union building is okay... It has some interesting performances and events every once in a while in the cafe, and the little store in the front is pretty handy when you need your magazines or some quick snack. That being said, the only original restaurant it had was shut down last year, and the downstairs section is icky. read more

I stand blissfully corrected - someone just messaged me to let me know that my beloved Union Art Gallery has moved to the NW corner of the Union, connected to the Pine Lounge. Shame on me for not doing more research, but I'm glad to hear that it still exists. Get your nap on, kids. read more
