Well I never have wanted to visit a police station, so that was a bummer. But the rental car I had…read morewas t-boned by a careless driver a block and a half from my house, and they wouldn't come out since no one was injured so myself and the driver went to the station to file a report. It was quiet on that Sunday morning, which at the very least I was thankful for. It took about 15 minutes to file the report but it took longer than that because it was a shift change and they don't pay attention to you then. At least they have some plants that could keep me calm, less annoyed.

When we arrived about 20 minutes early, we were greeted by a customs agent who pulled up our appointments. They took us right back to an agent who asked us about a dozen easy questions each, then said "as long as they don't find any arrests, we should be approved. We were out of the door ten minutes before our appointment time! About two hours after our interviews, the status changed on my application. Logging into the website, I saw we'd been approved already. The process was easy, and the people there couldn't be nicer.

Unbelievable...monsterous! Everyone near us in line who we talked to is missing their connecting…read moreflights!! We landed at 3:15 (40 minutes early)... We don't have global entry / I'm going to get it...so we were in a standard line. It took us from 3:15 to 5:45 to get through security! If we didn't land 40 minutes early, we would have missed our connection !!! The Customs agent we had paused to comment how we should have filled out our customs doc to save a minute - we replied the airline personnel distinctly told us NOT to fill it out. The TSA agent went on and on complaining. As if to say the long slow line is not his fault? I don't blame any of the agents. I'd say 1/3 or at least 1/4 of the TSA Customs booths were empty. I'd say the govt TSA management at O'Hare is inefficient. Their budgeting and manpower planning seems barely functional. We ended up running to our flight n barely made it by 2-3 minutes before they closed the door. One other couple made it on behind us and United left about 7 minutes late - fortunately waiting for us. Why 1 star? Because zero is not an option.

Dunkin (D) represents the 5th legislative district in the Illinois General Assembly, which is huge and straddles both sides of the Dan Ryan Expressway, reaching from "the Gold Coast to Soul Coast," as he put it. I had the privilege of hearing Rep. Dunkin speak last night at my daughter's high school graduation. He was excited for the graduates (his own daughter was among them), but more importantly, this man's humility and reverence for his own success was extraordinary and his background and life path, inspiring. In the context of reminding the graduates that they should be proud of themselves and not take graduating even from high school for granted, he openly shared some intimate family details, including that half his siblings are incarcerated or have recently been released from Illinois or federal prisons. Dunkin was born and raised in Cabrini Green, attended Lincoln Park High School, graduated with an AA degree from Harold Washington College, a BA in Political Science from Morehouse College, and an MA in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago. Dunkin began his career as a social worker, and then became the Director of the Robert Taylor Boys and Girls Club of Chicago, and ultimately a Consultant for the City of Chicago Department of Health and Department on Aging. The man was stunningly humble and not the least bit full of himself. If you are lucky enough to live in his district, check him out. He's a jewel.

This is the headquarters of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. We are so lucky to have…read morethis institution here as well as sister agencies in the suburbs and other areas of Illinois. I'm from Oregon which has lots hiking, state parks, and so on, but the forest preserves are special. They provide a lot of great programming and the agency maintains over 70,000 acres of woodlands, wetlands, trails, and other outdoor spaces in Cook County. My experience with the FPDCC has been to attend various programs they're hosting. Usually those are some sort of hike or trail walk with a naturalist providing context and education along the way. Whilst there's several nature centers (kind of akin to the field houses at parks in the Chicago Park District) in the FPDCC system with different amenities, there are picnic groves, walking/hiking trails, camp sites, aquatic centers, and places for folks to have events, etc. I've been to the more "typical" events you'd expect of a forestry agency, such as a night hike at Sand Ridge Nature Center; hike learning about and looking for beaver activity at Trailside; owl education at River Trail Nature Center; and so on. An event about nature journaling held by a FPDCC volunteer piqued my interest in learning more about and doing some nature journaling, and led me to join the Chicago Nature Journaling Club. But they also have tried to expand to include some cultural programming and that's totally my bag. One of the signature programs supported by the department of Conservation & Experiential Programming is the American Indian Center's annual pow wow at Schiller Woods. I haven't been to that yet but it's on my list! Today I went to one of the Black History Month programs they're hosting, which was a lecture-style program with an indoor poetry trail and a discussion and introduction to Black naturalists and environmentalists from the Chicago area and beyond. It was a really interesting presentation and I'm only sad that I was the only person besides the employees who showed up! But we did have some good conversation about trying to reconnect Black folks to nature, environmental racism, how the issues early Black activists were concerned about are still germane today, and what folks are doing in the present to ensure these concerns remain part of the conversation. I really appreciate the discussion I had with Art, Bill, and Will. I'll be attending the BHM program at Sand Ridge that is a self-guided tour through trails that connected to the Underground Railroad. The forest preserves are fascinating, y'all!
