This review is for the Illinois Tollway employees stationed at the Lake Forest Plaza Oasis. I went there for assistance because I could not log into the Tollway website to update my debit card expiration date. There were three Tollway employee ladies sitting in desks next to the kiosk that offered to help me. Lisa B. assisted me in accessing my iPass account, updating the debit card info and changing my password. While this was going, I dropped some business cards that I bent over to pick up, but suddenly I lost my balance and fell flat on the floor. Due to neuropathy in my legs, I could not stand up on my own. These three wonderful ladies and two passersby helped me up off the floor and seated me in a chair in order to recover. Toll roads suck. Isn't this why we pay gasoline taxes and in Illinois, those are the highest east of the Rockies. Anyway, no choice but to take this stretch of I-90 that is known as the Illinois Tollway and is the only toll road on my entire drive from Washington to North Carolina. Good warning ahead of time and at least the gantries are clear. It was not necessary to slow down too much to go through the South Beloit toll plaza and the $1.90 toll will be billed since I do not have a transponder yet. As for the Illinois Tollway, it went fine. But there isn't an alternative. Open, wide, well-maintained and definitely high speed. But really, no different from the I-90 I drove in Washington, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. I'm not really sure what my $1.90 got me. I've called about six times and every single time you can't hear or understand what the person on the other end is saying, they're extremely rude and not understanding and want to force words into conversations when they don't need to be. The Illinois Toll Way department is a Robber. They charged me $600 for a max of $40. The lazy mf people do not want to work, never picked up the phone, and the website is a crap. I sent them letter that I am currently jobless and requested to reduce the bill to the original amount (@$192). In return, they sent me another bill of $592 with a threat that they will block my registration. Big F to them. Such a shame on Mayor of Illinois, who is letting this all happen. And beware, if you pay by plate with a rental car, you will pay tolls wherever that car goes, forever even if you told them the dates you rented the car and proved violations were out of your rental range. read more

Hello case number 5961259, I'm not from around Illinois at all and I'm now seeing why the Illinois Tollway gets so many negative reviews.  I went through Illinois on 7/32/2022 only for me to receive a letter almost 4 months later stating that my 12.20 in toll fees went up to 36.20, this is unbelievable, frustrating and fraudulent on the State of Illinois. It doesn't make any sense for me to get a letter in the mail 4 months later, most of the other cities I've traveled through will send you a letter in the mail like a week later for you to pay the tolls but your state makes you purposely pay late fees! I'm not sure why this is a practice for y'all. The guy I spoke with was a nice guy and he told me that he could remove the fees but my excuse wasn't good enough to get my late fees removed and I'm pretty sure he was told never to remove late fees. I will be sending this same complaint to the BBB eventhough this company isn't certified with the BBB.  For me to let this major problem go I want to be credited / check for 24 dallors in fees. I'm pretty sure the way that y'all handle business you won't care that I'm sharing this complaint with everyone website and person I know. Long ago we were told TOLLS were only temporary. BEWARE! This summer a $20 gift card applied to account disappeared. Was talking to a customer service rep asking why I was charged for violations (paper invoices with ridiculously high fees) when clearly I can see this payment on account. She was not able to see on her end......THE MOMENT I SAID I WILL TAKE A SCREEN SHOT GOT SIMULTANEOUSLY BACKED OUT OF MY I-PASS ACCT AAANNNDDD THE PHONE CALL DROPPED!!!! Immediately called back and logged in and guess what.........COULDN'T GET BACK SAME REP and the payment DISAPPEARED!!!!!! I can't make this stuff up!!! Wish I would have kept the card with the # to prove! Needless to say been monitoring account ever since. Recently received another "violation" invoice that was NOT on my account when I added $30 Nov 24th. Had a .15 balance and was left with $28.85 credit. Few days after on Nov 26th - - .75 was deducted and credit balance of $12.05!!! What happened to $17.80!!!?? There was NOTHING that showed deductions amounting to this! There were no outstanding balances or "violations" on Nov 24th when I checked and added $. Recently received another paper inv for $38.10 from 4 "unpaid" tolls from Oct 8th, 2023. Upon logging in today there's 3 invoices totaling $67.00 !! From Nov 24th 2023 - Jan 8, 2024 I used tollway and incurred 18 tolls in the amount of $13.30. NOTHING adds up! Called again and spoke to "SPARKLE", CSR. What she showed me (PDF download) and tried to explain ABSOLUTELY DID NOT MAKE SENSE or add up! She did, however, inform me that their system is "delayed" and I won't see any deductions on account if negative balance (what!?)and it was MY responsibility to keep track of all tolls and keep funds available. OK, yes, abosolutely ----- HOWEVER did not do so MANUALLY. I used account to monitor --- isn't that what the account is for ----to keep track?? Mistake! When $30 payment made on 11/24/23 -- kept VERY CLOSE track manually and didn't expect this BS again. To shorten this ------there's money missing and is NOT indicated where it went. I feel this is a deliberate and sneaky way to squeeze more $$$ out of people. Just read others reviews! Will avoid tolls whenever possible. So sad IL is soooo currupt!! Time to leave. read more

We were traveling through the state in a Motorhome towing a car. I immediately went on their website and set up an account. No where did it say you have to set up account for both vehicles. Received a violation notice for $112.85 for a $1.50 toll on the tow car. What a rip off. We will definitely avoid the state of Illinois in any future travels. read more

Are you kidding? My card on file expired and I didn't receive notification. Therefore, they sent me a statement for $36.80 for $4.80 in tolls across two days in October. I called today to get the unpaid tolls addressed and the agent told me that there was no way to waive the invoice fees of $32.00. This is supposed to be a government not-for-profit! I've had an I-Pass account for several years, and I always keep $10-30 on auto replenish. $20k annual property taxes, 10% sales taxes, and government licensing fees that are insane, and they want to gouge me for $32. The toll collection company looks fraudulent. I paid by credit card and the bar was lifted. I believed I paid correctly, Later, they billed the toll plus significant fees because I did not pay. I checked my credit card transactions and found the fee was not charged. I believe this company intentionally did not charge on the credit card at the gate to bill more than toll amount! later! This place SUCKS!!!! Not from the area and what they do here is ridiculous. After 14 days they take away your tools from pay-by-plate so you can't pay the tolls and then start to add fees to those tolls (that you have no idea about anymore) and I just got sent an invoice from 6 months ago finally showing tolls that I am supposed to pay. The customer service lady told me that no one would approve my request to deny the fees and that I have to just pay them. I have been an ipass user for years. I received an invoice and filed an affidavit of non-liability. I received no response except another invoice with a higher fee. I provided proof of my account. I provided proof that my ipass was charged at the prior and next toll gate showing that I had an active account at the time of the "violation". I tried calling the customer service and have been hung up on 4 times. The one time I did get through the customer service rep said to send in a dispute by mail and that there is nothing else they can do. Basically, ipass is the worst customer service I have ever had in my life. And, they are "stealing" from their customers. read more

The Illinois Tollway is to be commended for their use of new surveillance technology but they are not ambitious enough. Using Artificial Intelligence it is now possible to estimate when a driver's grandchild will miss paying a toll and the grandparents could be billed for this (plus penalties and interest) increasing Tollway revenues by 500%. I would give a zero if I could. I'd strongly suggest to everyone encountering problems including information not showing on their website for unpaid tolls, etc to start submitting claim complaints through BBB. Make sure to download and keep receipts of your attempt to pull up unpaid tolls, if you make an account on their website for trying to pay them when you enter what dates you're trying to pay if it generates "no results" you can click download of a document saying that. It will display your license plate number and dates. It will also show on the top right corner the date and time when you attempted to take care of it. read more

These people are all morons. I got an alert saying that my I-pass was empty, so I went on their website to refill. The site said "The I-PASS account information provided does not match our records" wich makes no sence conciddering all it asked was for my name, plate, and transponder all have not changed. While waiting for an emil back for help I called to pay by phone. They were friendly and took a payment the said I would get a conformation email. I never recived any email and when I call them they claim I never called them in the first place. I just recived a responce from filling out the help form on their site. It said I entered the wrong id number, but I didn't even fill that field out. They gave me a ID number but that gives me the exact same warning. The email they sent was from No-reply and my case was closed without any resolution. they said if I don't pay my tolls I will go to collections but they strait up REFUSE to accept any form of payment. This is just another way Illinois proves how much they hate their residents. Committing fraud against your residents is not right. read more

The rudest customer service ever! It billed me $18 in addition to the $11 unpaid tolls just for me to get an invoice. As I requested to challenge the invoice fees, I was told that " you could challenge however you want but you are not going to win". For a traveller to illinois, there was no toll booth available, there was no sign everywhere claimed by them that people only have 14 days to pay toll. As they get ride of the toll booth, they at least need to grant traveller first-time invoice fee exemption to be aware of the toll payment process. What a blood sucking policy or act!!! I have 3 transponders attached to automatic payment. after purchasing a new vehicle I forgot to add the plate and receive a bill for $22.00 for $5 in tolls, the representative stated that she could not provide me a courtesy to pay the $5. with all of the dishonest Politicians who has stolen the citizens money of illinois, and yet we are still paying and being robbed! I feel absolutely scammed. I take toll roads throughout other states all the time and because they now make you just drive through without paying as you are going through, my assumption was that I would receive an invoice to pay my tolls like I have in all the other states. What I received in the mail yesterday was a notice of violation for not paying my tolls and a $3.00 fee for every toll I went through. Absolutely mind blowing- my toll total was $24.50 which I would happily pay. My freaking fees were $39.00. As someone who doesn't travel through Illinois on the regular, she claims there are signs posted. I was not driving so therefore not paying attention to the signs she claims. You either need to change your rules and send invoices for payment or you need to hire someone to take them old school. Thanks for wasting my money. read more

Last year I was dealing with selling my car (I was out of state) the person picked my car up to take it to their mechanic (so he said) and never brought my car back! I wasn't able to report it stolen due to cities crazy laws! When I moved back to the Indiana I was hit with a bill over 1200 dollars! I called and explain and even sent all the proof that my car was stolen and still they are telling me o well! I scheduled an apt to go to their court but had to cancel due to not being able to get the day off work and guess what they charged me 850 for cancelling a freaking court appointment! YOU MISSED THE TOLL. So it's not likely you're gonna know how much to pay. I wasn't either so I called them. Guess what, your fine doesn't register for 2 weeks in the system so they can't even tell you how much to pay. The online system is also not helpful unless you know exactly which tolls you missed. Absolute TOTAL FAIL and waste of my time. Was told on the phone by one of incompetent people they hire that "you can pick up the Velcro pieces to attach the unit to your windshield at any Oasis".......what the incompetent Tollway person failed to mention was that the Tollway Offices at the Oasis' are CLOSED on weekends, therefore not convenient for me at all. So I went to the Lake Forest Oasis on Wed 9-25 before a 10:00 A.M. meeting I had in Vernon Hills thinking I would get in and out in seconds....how wrong I was - they only had 1 incompetent person working the counter that day, and she spent about 30 minutes on the 1st customer. There were 6 of us poor souls in line. It was just like the Post Office. I waited 32 minutes because incompetent person had no idea what she was doing. I had to leave. This is the Tollway, the incompetent people are not performing surgery, they are to collect money, and/or administer Tollway I pass Hardware - that is all. How can is it possible that they would take so much time for one person? And if this person was so far in arrears with his tolls, THEN TAKE CARE OF THE OTHERS WHO ARE NOT paying tolls in arrears to get out OUT! Since he was in arrears, LET HIM WAIT!
